Library-themed outfit for a library-themed presentation

Another day, another opportunity to wear library-themed clothing! I wore this outfit on a day that I gave a library-themed presentation, so I had to represent. 😉

Also, a quick note that today is the last day of spring quarter and academic year for my college. But I will be working during summer quarter, so you will be seeing more casual work outfits throughout the summer.

I am wearing FOUR different library-themed items, but the outfit as a while doesn’t come off as gimmicky — at least not to me. And it gave me so much joy to know about all the library-themed details I added to this outfit (even if no one else noticed), including:

  • library due date stamp tee
  • book-print skirt
  • library card tote bag
  • “Library Lovers” pin

My denim jacket served as my outerwear, but I also wanted to show how the outfit looked without the jacket. You can see better how I incorporated grey tones throughout the outfit, with the softer grey in the tee, a darker grey in the patent leather skinny belt, and pewter in the flats.

Work casual | Orange scarf + denim peep-toes

I was able to get in one last photo op with cherry blossoms! And I do believe this is the first time this year that y’all get a peek at my toes via my peep-toe wedges. 😉

I broke up all the colorblocking in this outfit with this orange print scarf. And yes, my toenail polish matches my cardigan. Hi, I’m Jen, and I love to color-coordinate. 😉

My library card tote bag was a last-minute addition as I was gathering up my stuff in the morning. I like that it adds a pop of (unexpected) color… but is it too much? A different purse or tote would definitely change the vibe of this outfit. Your thoughts?

Silk tunic + vintage earrings

I mentioned in last week’s budget post that my good friend and fellow librarian Stephanie had gifted me these vintage Native American earrings… I did not hesitate to wear them immediately! As in, the day after she gave them to me, and to a brunch outing during our recent girls’ weekend.

I also wore this outfit to work the next week, for a more casual “behind the scenes” day (i.e. no teaching). So instead of a “work to weekend” outfit, this is a “weekend to work” outfit. 🙂

I started with the earrings, and then pulled out this printed silk Anthropologie tunic that I fashion-swapped a few years ago, because I thought the turquoise of the earrings paired well with the teal color in the tunic. I also paired my brown cardigan and brown leggings with the tunic to echo the wood bits in the earrings.

This was a perfect outfit for a brunch, as the looser tunic style and leggings, which have a wide stretchy waistband, meant comfort for eating. I do not sacrifice practicality and comfort for the sake of style!

The backdrop is of a water collection tank outside the Tacoma Dome station, which includes free parking as well as access to the free light rail system that goes into downtown Tacoma. I thought it would make for a fun backdrop, and another way to highlight our city. Y’all know I really like to get outfit photos while we’re out and about, if at all possible, to show how I wear my outfits in real life.

Never forget | Library tee remix

A quick note that the poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit of April — thanks in advance!

I wore this outfit twice, once for a book reading at a local library, and then a slight variation for the next work day. And I wore some of my library-themed gear, because OF COURSE. This card catalog tee is one that my husband picked up me for years ago at a writer’s conference, and it still elicits chuckles from people who see it — and not just from librarians! 🙂

Here are a few ways I’ve worn this tee over the years on the blog. Interesting to note that I obviously prefer pairing this tee with blazers + jeans! Uh, at least the blazers are of different colors? Yeah, let’s go with that. 😉

This go-round, I paired the tee with black skinny jeans and a taupe blazer and patent leather wedges. Everything neutral except for the pop of turquoise in the tee and the pop of yellow in the library card clutch.

NEVER FORGET. And many people like to share their personal (and usually fond) memories of using old library card catalogs. I join in those reminiscences, as I remember helping my mom convert from the old library card catalog to a computerized system!

The backdrop is the Charlotte Mottet branch of the Tacoma Public Library system, one of the smaller branches in the system. But it’s in a very sweet, renovated brick building that’s had two additions on each side of the original central section. The entrance is my favorite part, with the iron scroll work and the brick design around the round doorway.

It started raining when we were taking pics, so we took the opportunity to take some photos under some trees, beside a lamp post. So it’s raining, there’s a lamp post… can y’all guess what I started doing???

Sam guessed right away:  “Are you doing the scene from Singin’ in the Rain?!”

My response? “Yessssssssssss.” 😀 😀 😀

Getting fancy in a floral maxidress

Librarian for Life + Style | Pinterest snapshot of Kewl Shop floral maxidressI was excited when The Kewl Shop contacted me recently about working together again — I’ve mentioned our past collaborations here, here, and here, including a style interview with them last month. When I reviewed “My Kewl Shop Faves” Pinterest board I had created last fall, I fell in love all over again with their floral printed maxidress.

My comments when I initially pinned this dress read:

V-Neck Floral Printed Long Dress — LOVE. So so so so pretty, with the print and flowy skirt.

So just a few days after placing the request — their shipping is seriously fast, and always free — this floral printed long dress was hanging (or rather, swaying) in my closet. And it is every bit as gorgeous up close as it in the pictures. The design of the dress, with its v-neck, pleated waist, and flowy skirt, has that easy glam factor of ’70s style. The outer layer is chiffon (the under layer is a cheaper-but-serviceable polyester), and the empire waist and skirt design are super flattering for my pear-shaped figure. The length is also properly long, hitting just below the ankle. Y’all know I feel my best when I’m looking “long and lean,” and this maxidress totally fulfills that ideal.

Although best known — and rightly so — for their quality bandage dresses, this lovely dress also goes to show the variety of items available on The Kewl Shop site!

Sam and I took advantage of a sunny day last weekend to take photos of this dress. I chose the backdrop of Peninsula Park, one of the oldest parks in Portland — and the oldest public rose garden in the city! The roses are not out yet, but instead we found a lovely copse of flowering trees to use as our backdrop. I loved so many of the photos we took that fair warning, this is a photo-heavy post!

My very own Cinderella moment! Love how you can see the chiffon overlay in the shots above and below.

I styled this pretty simply, as the print of the dress commands so much attention. I love the easy glamour of wearing flat strappy sandals with maxidresses — a comfortable evening option I’ve personally employed many times, as seen here, here, and here. I added dangly gold earrings, a new dangly gold bar necklace, and a stack of rose gold bangles. The jewelry was quite delicate, so I went a bit bolder with a yellow-and-tan clutch, to echo the bright colors in the floral print.

In the pic below, you can also see the nice detailing on this dress, with the pleated waist, the softly shirred skirt, and the extra bit of fabric loops at the top of the shoulder straps. The cost is a bit steeper than I usually pay ($119), but it seems a fair price when considering the extra, special details. Prom dresses and other fancy dresses also run about that price. (And pssst…. the cost would be even cheaper with the 15% reader discount code, LIBRARIAN15.)

Let’s talk practicalities now. This dress has a deep v-neck, both front and back — a neckline as low as you will ever see me in. I have a smaller chest, granted, but I never felt like I was in danger of accidentally popping out of this dress. It felt quite secure while wearing it. The info online does state that this dress does NOT have a built-in bra, so you would need to consider what kind of bra to wear with this dress. (It is a given for me that bras are ALWAYS a consideration when it comes to wearing clothes. Bras = real life for women.)

I wore a strapless bra under this, and I added a bra extender/converter like this one to lower the back bra-line, so as not to disrupt the line of the dress. However, I can easily see a strappy black camisole working with this dress as well, to help provide a modesty panel. Or you could add a shawl or cardigan/shrug for more coverage.

And last, but not least, one final “fairytale” shot in Peninsula Park. Sam joked that it looked like the petals on the trees had dropped onto my dress! ♥

I love this dress — thanks to The Kewl Shop! — and I can see myself wearing it all the way through the summer season.

And I have another treat in store for you tomorrow:  a casual version with this same floral maxidress! So be sure to stop by tomorrow for more ideas on how to remix a maxidress.

Full disclosure:  I received a dress of my choice from The Kewl Shop in exchange for a review. All opinions are 100% mine and 100% honest.

Linking up with these lovely ladies!
