Mixing shades of purple with tan + leopard

Today’s outfit was inspired, in part, by a recent outfit worn by Queen Letizia of Spain, an outfit I pinned here. The inspiration outfit pairs a grey leopard coat with black trousers — which I could have easily worn — but I decided to be a bit more adventurous by pairing my grey leopard cardigan with my tan trousers instead. Switching up the neutrals… it’s a wild ride here @ Librarian for Life + Style! 😉

And once I added my purple tank top, I got inspired to add more shades of purple with my dark purple overcoat + purple lip stain. And then I had the idea of taking photos after work by these light purple walls, in order to sneak in one extra shade of purple.

I do love me some wide-leg trousers, which always look their best while one is walking. I thought y’all would appreciate seeing how the trousers paired with and without the coat. (I think my husband especially appreciated the “all about that bass” shot below. 😉 )

I love these wedges so much. (They’re Clarks, so you know they’re comfortable.) They’re just so unexpected, with the mixture of snakeskin along the front and cork for the wedge part. And you know you have a good pair of shoes on when you are complimented on them at a bus stop! 😉

SIA interpretation: A dark and stormy skirt

It’s time for my Style Imitating Art (SIA) interpretation! This latest challenge was curated by Erin @ Loop Looks.

SIA inspiration pick:

Erin chose this 1939 gouache painting titled “Angel Applicant” and created by artist Paul Klee. You can read more about the painting here on the Met’s site.

"Angel Applicant" by Paul Klee, 1939, is in the Public Domain

“Angel Applicant” by Paul Klee, 1939, is in the Public Domain

My interpretation:

The inspiration painting is mostly black and grey, but I also noted bits of pale pink in the creature’s nostrils and the cloudy bits in the background. I thought this outfit, with its “dark and stormy skirt” and berry cardigan fit in well with the inspiration painting. (Full disclosure — I wore this outfit before Erin chose the inspiration painting — but I do think it ties in well with the challenge.)

And this skirt is one that my friend and fellow librarian Stephanie actually picked for me to style! She also selected my grey-and-black snakeskin wedges to pair with the skirt — she knows how I love to pattern-mix. 😉

I got this skirt years ago when we lived in the UAE, and I was drawn to its stark and stormy floral print. It has double-box pleats on each side, in the front and in the back. This is one of the few items in my closet with box pleats, which can visually widen hips if the pleats spread out too far.

If you don’t remember this box-pleat skirt, don’t worry — it’s been awhile since I’ve worn it or featured it on the blog. You can see it in action here and here, both posts from 2012. Interesting to note that I keep wearing this skirt with shades of purple… 😀

Summer work casual | Mixing patterns + color

I’ve mentioned that I’ll be working in the library during the summer, which I’m very excited about, as I haven’t been able to do that in years. (My faculty contract is a standard 9-month one, so summer work is separate.) And… that means more work outfits for the blog over the summer!

This outfit is a good example of a “summer work casual” kind of look for me. It’s professional because of the ankle pants and wedges and cardigan, but it’s fun and colorful with the mix of prints and bright colors. A win-win in my book! 🙂

Below is a closeup of mixing geometric prints. I felt a little wary at first about mixing these prints, as I tend to combine a larger-scale print with a smaller-scale print to balance things out visually — but these are two smaller-scale prints mixed together. But I think it works because navy is a unifying color between the two prints — and the navy cardigan helps “rest” the eye between the two prints. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it!

Plus, I got quite a few compliments on this outfit the first time I wore it, from students calling it “fun” and “cheerful.” I guess I’ve already worn down my colleagues with my pattern-mixing — they’re used to it by now! 😉

And this kind of comfy work outfit lends itself perfectly to being comfy while chilling out after work. (Yes, we took these photos after work. And yes, that’s me, Jen, with a gin. Or to be more specific, a gin-and-soda infused with cucumber elixir. Perfect for a light summer drink!)

Cheers, y’all!

Never forget | Library tee remix

A quick note that the poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit of April — thanks in advance!

I wore this outfit twice, once for a book reading at a local library, and then a slight variation for the next work day. And I wore some of my library-themed gear, because OF COURSE. This card catalog tee is one that my husband picked up me for years ago at a writer’s conference, and it still elicits chuckles from people who see it — and not just from librarians! 🙂

Here are a few ways I’ve worn this tee over the years on the blog. Interesting to note that I obviously prefer pairing this tee with blazers + jeans! Uh, at least the blazers are of different colors? Yeah, let’s go with that. 😉

This go-round, I paired the tee with black skinny jeans and a taupe blazer and patent leather wedges. Everything neutral except for the pop of turquoise in the tee and the pop of yellow in the library card clutch.

NEVER FORGET. And many people like to share their personal (and usually fond) memories of using old library card catalogs. I join in those reminiscences, as I remember helping my mom convert from the old library card catalog to a computerized system!

The backdrop is the Charlotte Mottet branch of the Tacoma Public Library system, one of the smaller branches in the system. But it’s in a very sweet, renovated brick building that’s had two additions on each side of the original central section. The entrance is my favorite part, with the iron scroll work and the brick design around the round doorway.

It started raining when we were taking pics, so we took the opportunity to take some photos under some trees, beside a lamp post. So it’s raining, there’s a lamp post… can y’all guess what I started doing???

Sam guessed right away:  “Are you doing the scene from Singin’ in the Rain?!”

My response? “Yessssssssssss.” 😀 😀 😀

Mint + navy | Color-coordinating a scarf + cardigan

🍀 🍀 🍀 I’m wearing green on my blog for St. Patrick’s Day! 🍀 🍀 🍀

I knew I wanted to pair this colorblock-trim cardigan with my navy dress, a riff off when I wore this cardigan over my navy dotted skirt. That morning as I was getting dressed, I happened to look over at my scarf bins in our closet… and realized that one of the vintage scarves I thrifted in the fall had the EXACT colors of this cardigan. EXACT. (I can neither confirm nor deny a happy dance commencing after that revelation.)

The front of my cardigan is distinctive with a row of navy trim down the front with brass buttons as well as navy-trimmed pockets, so I didn’t want to detract from those details with my scarf. I could have doubled up the scarf to wear it more like a neckerchief, but then another light bulb… I could wear my scarf with the ends hanging down the back!

I am a fashion rebel, y’all. 😉

The mint-and-navy scarf I thrifted last fall is a Vera Neumann scarf, and it is so pretttttttty. I was looking at posts, like here and here, about how you could date the scarf, and most of the clues go back to the signature. The signature on my scarf with its taller and more curved “V” looks like the signature that began in the late 60s and in the 80s. Based on the more streamlined, preppy-type pattern, I’m going to guess the early ’80s, rather than the ’60s, when her scarves had more graphic and geometric prints.

Below is a closeup of my scarf’s signature, plus how well it matches the trim of my cardigan. Y’all know how I love color-coordinating, so this discovery had me over the moon!

Looking over these pics, I really should have used either my steamer or my wrinkle releaser spray on my outfit… on the plus side, these wrinkles serve to highlight everyday use. Just another example of how I really do wear these outfits in real life! 😉

Also, it was super fun and sweet when a student worker in our library that day stopped short, all wide-eyed, and asked, “Did that scarf come with that cardigan? How does it attach?” And then she was amazed that I had bought each piece separately, even years apart! 😀
