Mint + navy | Color-coordinating a scarf + cardigan

🍀 🍀 🍀 I’m wearing green on my blog for St. Patrick’s Day! 🍀 🍀 🍀

I knew I wanted to pair this colorblock-trim cardigan with my navy dress, a riff off when I wore this cardigan over my navy dotted skirt. That morning as I was getting dressed, I happened to look over at my scarf bins in our closet… and realized that one of the vintage scarves I thrifted in the fall had the EXACT colors of this cardigan. EXACT. (I can neither confirm nor deny a happy dance commencing after that revelation.)

The front of my cardigan is distinctive with a row of navy trim down the front with brass buttons as well as navy-trimmed pockets, so I didn’t want to detract from those details with my scarf. I could have doubled up the scarf to wear it more like a neckerchief, but then another light bulb… I could wear my scarf with the ends hanging down the back!

I am a fashion rebel, y’all. 😉

The mint-and-navy scarf I thrifted last fall is a Vera Neumann scarf, and it is so pretttttttty. I was looking at posts, like here and here, about how you could date the scarf, and most of the clues go back to the signature. The signature on my scarf with its taller and more curved “V” looks like the signature that began in the late 60s and in the 80s. Based on the more streamlined, preppy-type pattern, I’m going to guess the early ’80s, rather than the ’60s, when her scarves had more graphic and geometric prints.

Below is a closeup of my scarf’s signature, plus how well it matches the trim of my cardigan. Y’all know how I love color-coordinating, so this discovery had me over the moon!

Looking over these pics, I really should have used either my steamer or my wrinkle releaser spray on my outfit… on the plus side, these wrinkles serve to highlight everyday use. Just another example of how I really do wear these outfits in real life! 😉

Also, it was super fun and sweet when a student worker in our library that day stopped short, all wide-eyed, and asked, “Did that scarf come with that cardigan? How does it attach?” And then she was amazed that I had bought each piece separately, even years apart! 😀

Animal pattern-mixing | Leopard + snakeskin

The poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from November. Thanks in advance!

Today’s outfit was inspired by Jennie @ A Pocketful of Dots, who recently paired a leopard-print cardigan with a wine-colored top and suede heels. I instantly thought, “Hey, I can do something similar!” Thanks, Jennie, for the inspiration. 🙂

There was a very low percentage for rain that work day, and that’s usually when I take the opportunity to wear some of my more adventurous shoes. So I went in for a bit of animal print pattern-mixing by pairing my snakeskin wedges with my leopard cardigan. Two species mixing! No worries, they got along fine. 😉 Even though they were two different patterns and textures, they go together — at least in my mind — because they are in complementary grey tones.

I kept adjusting my cardigan throughout our quickie photo shoot on our front steps. The pics in the collage below are two separate — but almost mirror-identical! — shots. I didn’t just flip one photo and put them together (you can tell by the part in my hair) — it’s just funny to me to see them side-by-side.

Sam joked that in the pics below, I was making myself “look small” (like our calico cat Brontë does sometimes), but I quite liked how the pics came out. It’s fun to mix up the poses sometimes. Plus, this way, you get to see the two animal prints closer together. 🙂

Sweater + pleated skirt outfit formula | Black + coral + snakeskin

As I flipping through the November 2016 issue of People StyleWatch, I saw a feature on fall outfit formulas, and one of them was about pairing a pleated midi skirt with a crewneck sweater and ankle strap shoes. ON IT.

I paired coral pleated skirt with my black crewneck sweater for a super simple outfit formula. I added a little something extra with my snakeskin, ankle-strap wedges, for that touch of whimsy I like to mix in with my comfy + classic style.

I often tuck in my shirts when I wear this skirt, because I like to emphasize the wide waistband, as seen here and here, but today, it felt more natural to keep the sweater untucked. I think the pleats stood out even more this way!

School spirit | More shades of blue with a yellow statement necklace

Blue + yellow redux! Yep, I wore a different outfit with this same necklace for my first day at my new job, as seen here. And for the first day of the term, I paired more shades of blue, royal blue and navy, with this same yellow statement necklace. School spirit for the win!

Closeup below of these awesome striped wedges and my yellow statement necklace. I got lots of compliments on my necklace — and it was funny that most of my colleagues were surprised that I dressed purposely in the school colors.

A new workplace = new colleagues to indoctrinate with my pattern-mixing and bright color combinations! 😉

I utilized one of my favorite ways to wear a cardigan, all buttoned up so that it looks like a skinny sweater. It helps when the cardigan has dyed-to-match buttons, like this one, which comes from my favorite line of August Silk cardigans.

And quick note, the backdrop is part of our backyard fence — and this is the last time you’ll see this fence in its natural wood color. We (and by “we,” I mean mostly Sam) have since stained our fences “sequoia red,” which looks awesome! My own colored wall backdrop! 😉 )

Going navy | Navy trousers + dark denim jacket

I love navy, y’all. And I’ve been wearing a lot of it lately. Navy is such a great neutral! I also just bought a new pair of wide-legged trousers in navy (along with the same style in black — there was a buy 1, get 1 half-off sale at The Limited!), and I like to wear new things right away.

I wanted to wear my navy trousers in a more work casual way, so that’s why I paired them with my dark denim jacket. It was also a teaching day for me (my first class of spring term!), so I wanted to look professional but also approachable. That also explains the navy wedges, for comfort on a teaching day. My navy-and-rust-colored embroidered tank provided the bit of color this outfit needed.

And closeups of my new short hairstyle! One thing I love about having hair this short again is that any pair of earrings I wear are now automatically noticeable. I love wearing earrings anyway, and my ears are one of my personal favorite features (yes, fun fact, I really do like the shape and size of my ears).

These navy Arabesque dangle earrings are lovely, but they usually get lost in my dark hair when my hair is longer. So it was nice for these statement earrings to really get to make a statement this time! 🙂

The last time I wore this navy-and-rust-colored tank on the blog, I wore it for a casual outfit in late summer. It was fun to remix it for a work-appropriate outfit, and I left it untucked to highlight the subtle hi-lo, curved hem of the tank. Leaving it untucked also helped emphasize the “casual” part of this work outfit. Untucked also equals comfortable. Real life, y’all. 😉
