SIA interpretation: Pocket flasks

A quick reminder that the poll is open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from October — thanks in advance!

And now it’s time for my interpretation of the latest Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge. 🙂

Inspiration:

Last week, Daenel @ Living Outside the Stacks chose a photograph of blown glass Pocket Flasks, made sometime in the U.S. between 1800 and 1860.

In Daenel’s own words:

“I chose the Pocket Flask because I like the colors of the different flasks, but it was the patterns that really intrigued me.

Interpretation:

I also loved how the colors and patterns reflected our autumn season. So that’s where I began. My cable knit sweater — which I love so much, so comfy, and it’s still available! — echoed the patterns of the blown glass flasks, and my plaid infinity scarf and cognac boots brought in all the different fall colors.

I also wore my topaz drop earrings, which reminded me of the blown glass.

I also wanted to take pics against a backdrop of multi-colored fall leaves. The shape of the leaves also, for me, echoes the shapes and patterns in the glass, and showcases a variety of colors, as well.

There’s still time to participate in SIA, and here’s how:

Everyone is welcome to participate — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also welcome — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator, Daenel, at livingoutsidethestacks@gmail.com by this Tuesday, November 6th. Daenel will then post the SIA round-up on her blog, Living Outside the Stacks, this Wednesday, November 7th.

Also be sure to check out SIA co-founder Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey.

Can’t wait to see what we are all inspired to wear!

Remixing my floral shirtdress as a jacket

I love actress Ruth Negga’s style, especially this recent outfit of hers featuring a long, ornately embroidered jacket paired with black skinny pants. I loved the juxtaposition of the long, patterned jacket with the black outfit foundation. I thought, “Hmmmm… I could recreate a similar look.”

So I styled my short-sleeved floral shirtdress over a long-sleeved black turtleneck, and I zipped up the top part but left the bottom loose like Negga’s original inspiration look. I could have gone with my black pumps but instead switched them out for my black ankle boots that morning, just because. The heart wants what it wants, y’all. ♥

I have remixed this floral shirtdress as a long jacket before, seen here last summer. I really liked changing up the look this time by having the shirtdress partially zipped up. I also felt super long ‘n’ lean — my favorite aesthetic! — with the black skinny jeans + booties.

The backdrop for these photos is a brick school building in east Tacoma, a school that closed down years ago. And as you can see, it was VERY rainy that day we took photos. We actually took these photos on a Sunday afternoon out with my hubby, and I remixed this outfit the next day for work with my black long-sleeved tee and patent leather pumps.

Remixing teal + tweed

I have definitely been enjoying remixing my new teal overcoat. And although this outfit is a bit old, it’s still chilly up here in the PNW!

I haven’t worn this tweed, pleated pencil skirt in quite a while — the last time it was featured on the blog was in 2013 (whaaaaa?!). I actually wasn’t sure it would still fit me (I’ve gained a few pounds the past couple of years), but it does! I do have to admit, however, that the skirt does fit tighter and sits higher on my waist now, but I’m glad to still be able to get some use out of this classic design.

I also liked how you still got a peek at the skirt pleats underneath my teal overcoat.

And below is a look at my outfit underneath the overcoat.

A note about my accessories. Last year, when I shared my necklace extender trick (courtesy of my blogger pal Erin @ Loop Looks), a reader shared a comment about how to turn a charm bracelet into a necklace by attaching it to a plain chain. So I took my mom’s silver charm bracelet and turned it into a necklace!

Valentine’s Day casual in red + black + snakeskin

Happy Valentine’s Day!

This casual outfit, in black with pops of red and silver, feels appropriate for Valentine’s Day. It’s the accessories that jazz up what is otherwise a very simple combo.

This is a closeup of my new turtleneck cable sweater from Lands’ End — I love that the cable knit is a bit thinner than other styles.

These sets of photos also demonstrate how tricky the light can be during the winter. The pics above are a bit blown-out, which makes it easier to notice the details of my outfit, but it also makes my umbrella look like it’s floating in air because the white panels totally disappear into the background. The pics below are more saturated, and this is honestly how these photos came out — they appear darker just because of the angle in which my husband held my camera phone! Librarian for Life + Style | Black cable sweater + silver hoop earrings + red lipstick

And while I was putting this post together, I thought that it would be fun to try a couple of photos in black and white, which you can see below. This outfit, while simple, also feels pretty classic — appropriate when wearing these earrings, which are reproductions of the ones Audrey Hepburn wore in the film Sabrina. A classic love story — also appropriate for Valentine’s Day! ♥

SIA interpretation: Native American mural weaving

It’s time for my personal interpretation of the new Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge that I curated this go-round. Since this SIA go-round nearly coincides with the upcoming American holiday of Thanksgiving, I wanted to choose a work that honored Native American perspectives and artistry.

SIA inspiration pick:

I chose a breathtaking new mural in Tacoma entitled “Working Forward, Weaving Anew,” designed by lead artists Esteban Camacho Steffensen and Jessilyn Brinkerhoff. It was painted this past summer, and it’s part of a new dedication by Tacoma in supporting local Native American voices in public art. You can read more about the mural online here and here.

Here is one photo, and portion, of this large-scale mural:

My interpretation:

Living in Tacoma, of course I was lucky enough to pose for photos in front of the mural itself! I focused on the colors, combining different shades of blue and beige, as well as combining different textures. I layered a nubby-textured navy blue sleeveless dress over a beige turtleneck, navy tights, and bronze Mary Jane heels. I then layered my tattersall cape-like short coat over that, to add warmth and depth to the look.

My accessories rounded out the outfit and added extra textures:  a royal blue patent leather skinny belt; gold earrings in the shape of a ribbon tied with a knot; and a silk dupioni clutch that looks gold in one light with hints of light blue in different light.

Instead of spiking my short hair up or sweeping the bangs off my face, I instead blow-dried it into a sleeker look and smoothed down my bangs. It’s fun to play with my hair, even when it’s short!

I also put my gold ribbon knot earrings in the second, upper hole in my ears, so you could see them better. My paternal grandmother used to make lots of jewelry, including these simple yet striking earrings. I’ve also worn these earrings as a pair of brooches here.

Everyone — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! — is welcome to participate. Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also just fine — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator — that’s me! — at librarianforlifestyle@gmail.com by tomorrow, Tuesday, Nov. 21st, by 10 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST). I will then post the SIA round-up on my blog on Wednesday, Nov. 22nd — the day before Thanksgiving!
