Monthly budget adventures (May 2017)

It’s time to see what my monthly clothing budget adventures were for this month! I kept it pretty low-key this past month, with only one purchase.

Wallet replacement

I have been needing to replace my cat wallet, seen here, and I couldn’t find my old Nine West wallet that I used to use. So one day, we happened to be shopping near a Ross outlet store, so we went in just to see… and I came out with this black-and-white patterned wallet.

And getting this wallet at a discount was… wait for it… easy on the wallet! 😉

  • Wallet, Tommy Hilfiger via Ross:  paid $14.99 (originally $39)

And below are three Tommy Hilfiger wallets that are very similar in design to the one I picked up:

Total spent for this month: $14.99
Total savings for this month:  $24.01

Total spent for this year:  $544.47
Total savings for this year:  $425.74

Giveaways and gifts

Sam won a gorgeous handbag (!) at the MOE Gallery fashion show that I modeled for recently. Of course then it became MY gift! 😀 This is such a well-made bag, with the thicker fabric panels, sturdy handles, interior lining, and metal studs on the bottom. Since the sides are wool, I will probably wait until fall to really use it — sweet anticipation!

My friend and fellow librarian Stephanie recently stayed over for a girls’ weekend, and gifted me a pair of handcrafted vintage earrings. They are Native American, combining turquoise, wood, and silver. Beautiful! The square button shape makes me think of mid-century design. She thought I would like them because I have other turquoise and silver jewelry, as seen here, plus she knows that I often wear my wood JORD watch, as seen here. She knows me so well! 😀

Speaking of earrings and gifts… My mother-in-law recently went on a Caribbean cruise vacation and picked up this pair of beaded earrings for me. So sweet! I love the inky, speckled midnight color of the beads.

Never forget | Library tee remix

A quick note that the poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit of April — thanks in advance!

I wore this outfit twice, once for a book reading at a local library, and then a slight variation for the next work day. And I wore some of my library-themed gear, because OF COURSE. This card catalog tee is one that my husband picked up me for years ago at a writer’s conference, and it still elicits chuckles from people who see it — and not just from librarians! 🙂

Here are a few ways I’ve worn this tee over the years on the blog. Interesting to note that I obviously prefer pairing this tee with blazers + jeans! Uh, at least the blazers are of different colors? Yeah, let’s go with that. 😉

This go-round, I paired the tee with black skinny jeans and a taupe blazer and patent leather wedges. Everything neutral except for the pop of turquoise in the tee and the pop of yellow in the library card clutch.

NEVER FORGET. And many people like to share their personal (and usually fond) memories of using old library card catalogs. I join in those reminiscences, as I remember helping my mom convert from the old library card catalog to a computerized system!

The backdrop is the Charlotte Mottet branch of the Tacoma Public Library system, one of the smaller branches in the system. But it’s in a very sweet, renovated brick building that’s had two additions on each side of the original central section. The entrance is my favorite part, with the iron scroll work and the brick design around the round doorway.

It started raining when we were taking pics, so we took the opportunity to take some photos under some trees, beside a lamp post. So it’s raining, there’s a lamp post… can y’all guess what I started doing???

Sam guessed right away:  “Are you doing the scene from Singin’ in the Rain?!”

My response? “Yessssssssssss.” 😀 😀 😀

SIA interpretation: Sing Street

It’s time for my Style Imitating Art (SIA) interpretation! This week’s inspiration artwork was chosen by SIA co-founder Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey, and she chose the bright and colorful poster for Sing Street, which was one of her favorite movies this past year.

My interpretation

I think this is the first time to feature this infinity scarf I thrifted back in December — and what better way to feature this chevron-print scarf of multiple neon colors than with an ’80s-inspired challenge?! And the background color of this part of the fence matches up almost perfectly with the background color of the movie poster! 😀

Librarian for Life + Style | Collage for my Sing Street SIA interpretation

I wanted the scarf to be the focus of the look, so I paired it with an outfit of neutrals that also fit in with the movie poster.

Yep, I’m wearing denim on denim:  black skinny jeans and a dark-wash denim jacket. But it works because the colors and washes are different — but no ’80s acid wash! And no “Canadian tux” here! 😉

Multi-colored backdrop

The backdrop is a fence that’s been painted in multiple colors. (I believe it’s a fence that encircles a local child’s day care or playground.) I spied the fence a few weeks ago and thought at the time it might make a good backdrop for future photos. Multi-colored scarf, multi-colored fence — and just perfect for the movie poster inspiration! 🙂

Still time to participate in SIA!

Everyone — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! — is welcome to participate. Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also just fine — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator, Salazar, at 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by tonight Monday, Feb. 27th. Salazar will be traveling, so she will then post the SIA round-up on her blog, 14 Shades of Grey, on Wednesday, March 1st.

Can’t wait to see the round-up!

And I’ll be back next Monday to choose the next SIA challenge… stay tuned 🙂

Wearing my mom’s favorite colors

One quick note:  the poll is open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from November. Thanks in advance!

It’s my mother’s birthday today, so in her honor, I put together a collage of me wearing outfits featuring her favorite colors:  purple, royal blue, turquoise, and hot pink. We have similar coloring — pale skin and dark hair — so I often wear these colors, too. I also wear these colors often in combination with each other, particularly pink and purple, as well as pink and turquoise.

Here’s to you, Mom, and happy birthday!

SIA interpretation: Rescued art

My turn to interpret the latest Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge. It was Erin’s turn to curate, and she rescued this painting, The Door Within, from the dumpster in her building! The artist, Jean Fetman, from Highland Park, IL, and you can read Fetman’s obituary online here.

There is still time to participate in this week’s SIA challenge! Just sent a pick of an outfit inspired by this week’s artwork, and send a photo — selfies and flay lays also okay — to Erin at looplooks@gmail.com by tonight, Monday, August 22. Erin will then post the round-up on her blog, Loop Looks.

(Warning, this post is particularly photo-heavy — Sam captured a lot of good photos!)

Here is my interpretation of The Door Within:

Librarian for Life + Style | 'The Door Within' Style Imitating Art challenge

This painting is so vibrant, I knew I wanted to pull out at least a couple of the bright colors. So many to choose from! My pink scarf with the white geometric pattern was the starting point — the painting is composed of geometric shapes — and then my turquoise dress, and finally, my bright pink wedges.

Usually, I start with with the shoes when I think of outfits, but not this time! It actually took me longer than usual to decide on the shoes — and then when I saw the pink wedges, my brain went, “DUH!” I am fond of color-coordinating. 😉

When I came downstairs that day, Sam’s eyes went round. (Always a good sign.) Here’s how our conversation went:

Sam:  Wow.

Jen:  I am taking that as a compliment.

Sam: You should! What are those colors?

Jen:  Turquoise and pink.

Sam:  Wow, I never would have thought to pair those colors together.

Jen:  That’s why I love SIA challenges! I get inspired to try new things!

I also added a tiny bit more color through my earrings, which have turquoise and royal blue beads. And of course, bright pink lip stain, to carry out the pink from head to toe! 😀

The backdrop adds a lot to the overall look and photos, as well. First of all, there’s the symbolism with the title of the painting, The Door Within (and there is a door actually in the painting, see here for the full painting). But the main reason I chose this backdrop was the bright lilac colors of the walls and door. Style bloggers LOVE a brightly colored wall, and I am no exception! This purple building is just down our street, so I had seen it before and thought, “I need to remember that building for a future photo location.” I thought it would be great as a backdrop for this challenge, plus it adds an additional color to my interpretation of the artwork!

Be sure to check out all the SIA interpretations on Erin’s blog tomorrow!
