Books, books, books | Little free library + book-print skirt

I haven’t worn my books-and-cats-print skirt in awhile, and since it’s cotton, it’s a decent choice in summer. I went a bit retro pairing the circle skirt with a buttoned-up cardigan and a patent leather skinny belt with a fun heart buckle.

We have quite a few “Little Free Libraries” around town, so I went online to the map of officially registered little free libraries and found a very sweet-looking one in east Tacoma for a fun photo backdrop. (I also wore a variation of this outfit the next day to work at the library. Waste not, want not. 😉 )

Below is a closeup of my turquoise skinny belt with the heart buckle detail. And OF COURSE I had to wear my turquoise stud earrings to tie in with everything. That’s what I do y’all. Color-coordinate.

It’s summer, so that means wearing one of my favorite types of sandals, the flat t-strap sandal. These are my second pair of tan-and-gold t-strap sandals, as I detailed in this prior post.

And if you’re wondering how I managed to wear a three-quarter sleeve cardigan in the summer sunshine and not burn up, it’s because I layered it over a sports bra. No extra tank top layer around the middle, which really cuts down on the sweat factor. One of my favorite clothing tricks!

New eShakti skirt | Teal + brown + white

A couple of months ago, I was contacted by eShakti to select a new clothing item from their site. I have worked with eShakti quite a few times over the years, as seen here and here, for starters. I ultimately selected a floaty midi skirt with a palm leaf-print design.

For the sake of full disclosure, I must point out that that this was my second selection for an eShakti item this spring; I will detail my failed first attempt in my monthly budget adventures post later this month. This post is also not sponsored by eShakti; although I was contacted by them to select a complimentary clothing item of my own choosing, there was no obligation to provide a review. I am doing so because I want to share my experience and photos with my readers.

I went the custom sizing route for the skirt, as you can see by the label and pics below. I’m very glad to report the skirt does fit. (Whew.)

Fair warning, this is a photo-heavy post!

I like the wide and high-waist design of the skirt, and this design looks a bit retro to me. It is floaty and flippy, and I lost no time in twirling in my new skirt! 😀

The skirt is also lined, thank goodness, as the fabric is quite thin and lightweight. The fabric for both the skirt and lining is polyester crepe, which means I did have to use my static guard spray on the skirt, to make sure it didn’t cling throughout the day. (You can also read about my love of the static spray here in this “Everyday faves” post.)

As the skirt design feels both fresh and retro to me, I stuck with simple pieces to pair with it. I wanted the vibe to be soft and simple. Brown and turquoise remain one of my favorite color combinations, so I layered my brown cardigan over a simple white tank top. My tortoiseshell peep-toe wedges tied into the brown color tones, as did my vintage sunglasses.

My white tank top provided a nice backdrop for my gold bar pendant necklace. And my finishing accessories were my thin gold-and-pearl hoop earrings and my turquoise stud earrings. Ultimately, I felt pretty and feminine and comfortable in my new skirt and outfit today!

Silk tunic + vintage earrings

I mentioned in last week’s budget post that my good friend and fellow librarian Stephanie had gifted me these vintage Native American earrings… I did not hesitate to wear them immediately! As in, the day after she gave them to me, and to a brunch outing during our recent girls’ weekend.

I also wore this outfit to work the next week, for a more casual “behind the scenes” day (i.e. no teaching). So instead of a “work to weekend” outfit, this is a “weekend to work” outfit. 🙂

I started with the earrings, and then pulled out this printed silk Anthropologie tunic that I fashion-swapped a few years ago, because I thought the turquoise of the earrings paired well with the teal color in the tunic. I also paired my brown cardigan and brown leggings with the tunic to echo the wood bits in the earrings.

This was a perfect outfit for a brunch, as the looser tunic style and leggings, which have a wide stretchy waistband, meant comfort for eating. I do not sacrifice practicality and comfort for the sake of style!

The backdrop is of a water collection tank outside the Tacoma Dome station, which includes free parking as well as access to the free light rail system that goes into downtown Tacoma. I thought it would make for a fun backdrop, and another way to highlight our city. Y’all know I really like to get outfit photos while we’re out and about, if at all possible, to show how I wear my outfits in real life.

Monthly budget adventures (May 2017)

It’s time to see what my monthly clothing budget adventures were for this month! I kept it pretty low-key this past month, with only one purchase.

Wallet replacement

I have been needing to replace my cat wallet, seen here, and I couldn’t find my old Nine West wallet that I used to use. So one day, we happened to be shopping near a Ross outlet store, so we went in just to see… and I came out with this black-and-white patterned wallet.

And getting this wallet at a discount was… wait for it… easy on the wallet! 😉

  • Wallet, Tommy Hilfiger via Ross:  paid $14.99 (originally $39)

And below are three Tommy Hilfiger wallets that are very similar in design to the one I picked up:

Budget recap

Total spent for this month: $14.99
Total savings for this month:  $24.01

Total spent for this year:  $544.47
Total savings for this year:  $425.74

Giveaways and gifts

Sam won a gorgeous handbag (!) at the MOE Gallery fashion show that I modeled for recently. Of course then it became MY gift! 😀 This is such a well-made bag, with the thicker fabric panels, sturdy handles, interior lining, and metal studs on the bottom. Since the sides are wool, I will probably wait until fall to really use it — sweet anticipation!

My friend and fellow librarian Stephanie recently stayed over for a girls’ weekend, and gifted me a pair of handcrafted vintage earrings. They are Native American, combining turquoise, wood, and silver. Beautiful! The square button shape makes me think of mid-century design. She thought I would like them because I have other turquoise and silver jewelry, as seen here, plus she knows that I often wear my wood JORD watch, as seen here. She knows me so well! 😀

Speaking of earrings and gifts… My mother-in-law recently went on a Caribbean cruise vacation and picked up this pair of beaded earrings for me. So sweet! I love the inky, speckled midnight color of the beads.

Never forget | Library tee remix

A quick note that the poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit of April — thanks in advance!

I wore this outfit twice, once for a book reading at a local library, and then a slight variation for the next work day. And I wore some of my library-themed gear, because OF COURSE. This card catalog tee is one that my husband picked up me for years ago at a writer’s conference, and it still elicits chuckles from people who see it — and not just from librarians! 🙂

Here are a few ways I’ve worn this tee over the years on the blog. Interesting to note that I obviously prefer pairing this tee with blazers + jeans! Uh, at least the blazers are of different colors? Yeah, let’s go with that. 😉

This go-round, I paired the tee with black skinny jeans and a taupe blazer and patent leather wedges. Everything neutral except for the pop of turquoise in the tee and the pop of yellow in the library card clutch.

NEVER FORGET. And many people like to share their personal (and usually fond) memories of using old library card catalogs. I join in those reminiscences, as I remember helping my mom convert from the old library card catalog to a computerized system!

The backdrop is the Charlotte Mottet branch of the Tacoma Public Library system, one of the smaller branches in the system. But it’s in a very sweet, renovated brick building that’s had two additions on each side of the original central section. The entrance is my favorite part, with the iron scroll work and the brick design around the round doorway.

It started raining when we were taking pics, so we took the opportunity to take some photos under some trees, beside a lamp post. So it’s raining, there’s a lamp post… can y’all guess what I started doing???

Sam guessed right away:  “Are you doing the scene from Singin’ in the Rain?!”

My response? “Yessssssssssss.” 😀 😀 😀
