Easy pattern-mixing | Pink stripes + denim trousers + geometric-print flats

I felt so good in this outfit, as it just felt so easy and light and simple — yet I’m still sneaking in some pattern-mixing. Because WHY NOT.

We took photos after work at these interesting stained-glass windows at a local church (which wasn’t holding services when we took pics, just FYI).

Sam cracked me up when I came downstairs for coffee that morning, and he saw the top half with my pink-striped tee and denim trousers. He went, “Oh, you look cute!” — and THEN he looked down and spied my pink geometric-print canvas flats. He then exclaimed, “Oh, and that was BEFORE I saw your shoes! Look at you pattern-mixing!” ūüėÄ ūüėÄ ūüėÄ

I did another rope-braid for my pixie bangs, as an easy way to get my hair off my face — and a little rope braid is more interesting than just a bobby pin. And if you’re not sure what a “rope braid” is or how to do one, here’s a “rope braid for pixie cut” hair video tutorial.

I wanted to get in a selfie after I realized that we (accidentally) were color-coordinating. Sam’s grey chambray shirt coordinates with my denim trousers, and I love how the pink sides of his sunglasses echo my pink-striped shirt.

The couple that color-coordinates together… ūüėČ

Wide silk headband with short hair | Pink + black + denim trousers

If you’re a longtime reader (thank you!), you know I love to experiment with my hair, no matter the length. So OF COURSE I changed it up with my new shorter ‘do, by wearing a wide silk headband¬†I picked up ages ago during a Chicago trip. I really like wearing headbands and head scarves when I have shorter hair — maybe because they have more visual impact? I think wearing headbands, etc. when you have shorter hair also projects confidence in your hairstyle.

The rest of the outfit, which I wore on a behind-the-scenes kind of day — never-ending library instruction prep! — is a typical example of a work casual look for me. The combination is very basic: ¬†top + cardigan + trousers + flats. Denim trousers, aka trouser jeans, are a great way to make an outfit more professional while still feeling as comfortable as jeans, and canvas flats are more professional while still feeling as comfortable as sneakers. I felt super comfy wearing this outfit, and work-appropriate enough for a “casual Friday.”

Professional + comfortable in pink + grey

I wasn’t sure if I was going to take pictures of this outfit — it just seemed so basic to me — until both my friend and colleague Stephanie and my husband Sam commented that¬†they really liked this outfit. And¬†I am partial to a pink + grey color combination.

I had an important meeting this day, so I wanted to look a little professional — hence, the grey blazer — but I didn’t want to look like I was trying too hard. A¬†blazer is the easiest shortcut to making anything look instantly more professional! And this blazer — still available online! — has such nice seaming details. Also, I added a grey pearl-and-silver brooch at the last minute — another shortcut to making any outfit a little dressier and more professional.

But y’all know me and how¬†highly I value comfort, so that explains the untucked blouse and trouser jeans.

Stephanie also commented on how she liked that¬†my pewter wedges tied into my grey blazer. (Not an accident. I am my mother’s daughter.) Even when I am at my most tired — and this term, especially, has been draining me — my mind still automatically looks for ways to color-coordinate. Color-coordination = LOVE.

Mixing stripes + floral for spring

This is a work outfit I wore the last week of winter term, but it includes one of my “Top 10” remix pieces — the grey striped top — so I figured it was still okay¬†to post it. And oops, I didn’t realize until too late that I’m wearing the same grey striped top and trouser jeans that I wore in yesterday’s post¬†(although I wore the two outfits a couple of weeks apart). Ah, well, remixing = real life! ūüėČ ¬†And oh my goodness, I just realized that I’ve got my other Greg Michaels bag in today’s post — the blue tote today vs. the new red handbag yesterday. Style synergy!

On the day I wore this outfit, I had a series of¬†important meetings with different people (students, administrators, fellow faculty),¬†but I didn’t want to be too formal. So I went to my “Easy Work Outfits” Pinterest board for inspiration, and today’s outfit was inspired by this pin from Audrey @ Putting Me Together and this pin from Jennie @ a Pocketful of Polka Dots.

Gotta admit, I really loved this outfit. I still felt relatable and down-to-earth in my trouser jeans and t-shirt, but I also felt casually professional in my cardigan and blue tote bag. And best of all, I felt comfortable!

It seems I really like to mix this floral scarf with stripes! Here are different ways I’ve remixed this same floral scarf with stripes the past three springs:

Blog anniversary + red handbag review

Happy blogiversary! Three years ago, I started this style blog, and thank you to everyone who has been around for this journey! ūüôā (And if you’d like to see straightaway if you’re the giveaway winner, scroll down to the bottom.)

Today’s outfit feels very me, with a mix of classic (blazer + red lipstick), comfy (trouser jeans + tee), and a bit of quirk (pattern-mixing with stripes +¬†leopard print flats). My Top 10 remix item is my grey striped tee, which you can see better in pics below.

And yes, this is a photo-heavy post. But it’s my blog anniversary, and I’ll pose if I want to! ūüėÄ

Librarian for Life + Style | Blazer + trouser jeans + red handbag

And for today’s post, I wanted to feel classy and pretty. And how better to do that than with my new handbag from Greg Michaels? They recently offered me a choice of a new bag — you can read my review of my blue Greg Michaels tote here — and this time, I chose their Greg Michaels Rebecca in Red Envelope Style Handbag. I have nothing else like it in my closet, and I wanted to try something new.

The bag is a classic color and shape, and I like the simplicity of the design. The leather shoulder strap is also a smart¬†touch, as it makes the chain strap more comfortable to wear. The red color is a classic true red, and the quality of the Nappa leather — and quality overall — is very high. Also classy is the drawstring bag the handbag comes in! I also appreciate how the bags are packaged for shipping, with the metal bits protected by plastic to prevent¬†scratches, as seen below.

I also love the design detail of how the chain wraps in and around the top flap of the bag.

The interior is not very large, so this is most definitely not an everyday kind of purse for me. But I managed to pare down the essentials, and my phone fits in it. I like how the front envelope detail, as seen above, is also a pocket, and there are two additional interior pockets.

The drawback to this handbag is that although it’s categorized as a crossbody, it feels a bit short on my body. I’d personally prefer it to hit just a bit lower on me. BUT that gave me an idea for how to mix up the look of this bag. Thinking about¬†the leather shoulder strap detail, I thought it would be fun to turn this crossbody bag into a clutch. How? I pulled the chain down into the bag — the excess chain slid neatly into the back pocket — and then secured it with a twist tie. (Tip: ¬†I threaded the twist tie through the links on both sides of the chain to make sure it held.)

And by doing that, I now have two more options for how to wear this gorgeous handbag, by either (1) carrying it as a small handbag, or (2) by slipping my hand through the leather strap to carry as a clutch. Both ways are shown below.

And you might also have noticed new earrings I’m sporting in these pics — also from Greg Michaels! I chose the Serenity earrings¬†— again, I went for a¬†classic shape. I like that the size is not too big on my ears. Big enough for sparkle, but small enough to still be a bit subtle. The earrings are also quite lightweight, another plus.
