Simple + neutral with a red crossbody bag

I loved this outfit so much — and the photo location! — that this is a warning that this post is more photo-laden than usual.

The backdrop was a total accident, albeit a happy one. It’s a branch-covered wall by a public parking space in downtown Tacoma. While we were out and about a few weeks ago (yes, it took a while to get this outfit up on the blog), we parked in this parking lot for the first time. As we got out of the car, I saw the wall and went, “Huh. That might be a good place to take pictures.” And it was! I didn’t realize how good this backdrop would be until Sam kept saying, “Wow!” while he taking photos, about how dynamic the branches looked in photos.

But now about the outfit! It’s SO SIMPLE yet low-key dynamic on its own, I suppose. I paired a basic white cardigan with black skinny jeans and a tan coat. I then decided to make myself feel a bit more pepped-up with red lipstick… which led to the red crossbody bag. And the gold trim on the red crossbody bag led me to my classic gold hoop earrings (reproductions of Audrey Hepburn’s own earrings in Sabrina, a birthday gift last year).

Classic, simple pieces that just work. Every. Single. Time.

These textured espadrille slip-ons were the last things I grabbed. I could have easily gone for my classic black ballet flats, or my leopard print flats, or even my striped slip-on sneakers, which would all have looked just fine. But I chose these espadrille slip-ons because the colors, tan and black, just seemed to tie the color-blocked nature of my outfit together. And they felt a bit unexpected amidst all the classic pieces. It just worked for me! 🙂

I had to darken the photo above a bit to get a better look at these gold hoop earrings, which are actually clip-ons. Being such a classic design, these earrings are a fun and easy way to add some easy glamor to an everyday kind of outfit.

SIA interpretation: Cherry blossom dish

A quick note that the poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit last month!

It’s time for my interpretation of this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge! Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey chose the inspiration artwork, a Japanese “Nabeshima” dish from the Met’s public domain collection.

The inspiration artwork:

"Large Dish with Cherry Blossoms," The Met, is in the public domain

“Large Dish with Cherry Blossoms,” The Met, is in the public domain

My interpretation:

My starting point was my green floral scarf, one of the few floral-patterned items in my closet. It brought in the green tones from the leaves in the plate design, plus the floral theme, of course. Then I added a navy cardigan (which you can see better if you scroll down a bit), dark skinny jeans, and finally, my navy trench. I snuck in a bit more floral because my trench coat and belt are trimmed in a daisy print.

I really wanted to get in photos this past week with some cherry trees, and I was lucky to spy this copse of cherry trees blooming with some of the paler blooms I’ve seen around town.

Below is a closeup of the floral print on my scarf, as well as a closeup of my champagne-colored flats. I went with these flats because the folds of the silk pleats along the round toe reminded me of the cross-hatching of lines in the plate design. I also wore yellow rose stud earrings, to tie into my scarf and to add a final floral touch.

I wore this outfit to work, a decidedly casual outfit for a more casual day at work (no reference desk duty or teaching). I could easily wear this outfit for running errands, too, so it’s more of a “work to weekend” kind of look. I felt pretty and comfortable in this outfit, pretty true to my personal style outlook. The “bit of quirk” comes in with all the subtle floral-mixing of the daisies, roses — and cherry blossoms! 🙂

You could also easily dress this outfit up for your own workplace by switching out jeans for ankle pants or trousers or a pencil skirt.

There is still time to participate in SIA!

Everyone is welcome to participate — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also welcome — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator, Salazar, at 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by tomorrow, May 8th. Salazar will then post the SIA round-up on her blog, 14 Shades of Grey, this Wednesday, May 9th.

Can’t wait to see what y’all come up with! 😀

Navy + pink stripes for springtime

Two quick reminders:

I have worn my new navy- and pink-striped tee a few times already, but it hasn’t yet made it to the blog… until now! The pink and navy color combo feels so fresh for spring, and we’re finally seeing some blooms around here. Of course, it’s still off-and-on rainy (more “on” than “off”), so the rain boots are still a necessity.

I wore this on the weekend running errands, and it’s a good casual example of my personal style:

  • Comfy = Yep! Skinny jeans and a tee are always comfortable in my book
  • Classic = You can’t get more classic than a striped tee and a trench coat!
  • Touch of whimsy = The bits of whimsy for me come down to the pops of pink, especially in the unexpected pink trim on the rain boots, and in the daisy floral trim in the trench coat.

We took a break while running errands around town to enjoy a stroll around Wright Park, which is one of the oldest, and loveliest, parks in the city. They have trees of all different kinds, and placards on each so I always learn something new each time we visit. And OF COURSE I got excited when we came across an old cherry blossom tree, this one blooming with buds of white.

And at the end of our quick photo shoot, Sam spied a brightly painted rock around one of the trees. It turns out there’s a community art project called “Tacoma Rocks,” in which locals paint rocks and place them all around the city. Why? In order to spread happiness. The founder of the Tacoma Rocks group stated in a local interview that, “We spread smiles one rock at a time.” How awesome is that?!

The rock that Sam found spreads a great message, that “Different is cool!” ♥ ♥ ♥ I had to share this sweet story and awesome message!

Agatha Raisin style inspiration

For the last year, I have been enjoying a subscription to the Acorn streaming media service, as it has all my favorite British period and mystery series, like Midsomer MurdersFoyle’s War, Vera, and Poirot. This past August, it started streaming Agatha Raisin, a TV series based on the book series written by M. C. Beaton. It’s a humorous mystery series, spinning off the “cozy mystery” formula in surprising ways, and it stars the dynamic Scottish actress Ashley Jensen as the title character, a PR agent-turned-amateur sleuth.

What I love most about Jensen’s portrayal of Agatha Raisin is how she stays true to her flashy, color-coordinated style, even while feeling (and simultaneously fighting) the urge to “fit in” with her neighbors in the Costwolds. She is realistically flawed while always looking FABULOUS. ♥

My favorite episode thus far is the “Witch of Wyckhadden” episode, which features a castle library, as well as a hidden passageway (which I have been a sucker for ever since reading about Nancy Drew’s adventures in The Hidden Staircase). I took notice when Agatha wore this classic + sassy black-and-brown-tweed combo. I literally shouted at the screen, “I can recreate that outfit!”

And here is my recreation:  wide-legged, brown tweed trousers, a thin black sweater, a tan trench coat, a black beret, and a statement necklace. Gotta admit, I felt pretty snazzy in this outfit!

Below is a closeup of the different textures in this outfit, including the tweed of my trousers, the ribbed cuffs of my lightweight sweater, and the dark wood tones of my JORD watch.

Sam and I had fun recreating some of the poses from the screenshots I took of the Agatha Raisin episode. We browsed various antiques and salvage shops downtown in the theater district of Tacoma, and along the walk, we spotted a picturesque stone wall as well as a beautiful set of stone steps and greenery tucked into a hillside.

Sam had also gone to a literary reading the week before at a local antique shop, Sanford & Son Antiques and Auctions, which has three levels of amazing finds. On the bottom floor is a stage lined in bookcases, complete with library ladder. A perfect place to hold a reading — and a perfect place to take photos for this inspiration post! 😀

Smiley faces in the rain | Pink + navy work casual

It’s been raining a lot here in Portland in the transition to spring (shocker, I know) — I heard on the radio we had 20 straight days of rain! I love the rain, but the downside is that it does make it hard to take pics outside. But with the recent time change due to daylight saving time, we were able to take pics after I got home from work.

Below is a look at my outerwear, my navy trench coat last seen here, and then my pink + navy work casual outfit underneath. I paired dark skinny jeans (the ones with the black tuxedo stripe running down the sides, closeup here) with my navy blazer for a more casual version of a suit look. To break up all the navy, I added my bright pink sleeveless blouse and then finished off the look with fun accessories, a clock-print scarf and striped wedges. I could also flip this look by pairing navy ankle pants with a dark denim jacket.

And yes, I wore my clock-print scarf in honor of the recent daylight saving time. Because I am THAT dedicated. 😉

And if you’re wondering if you’ve seen that umbrella on the blog before, the answer is YES, as seen here. Obviously, I like to make goofy poses with this smiley face umbrella! 😀
