Dusty rose jeans + cowboy boots

When it’s fall, I always want to bring out my “Ferdy the Fox” sweater. And it paired very nicely with my dusty rose skinny jeans {still available online!} and cowboy boots.

You can take the girl out of Texas, but you just can’t take Texas out of the girl, eh?… 😉 Gotta admit, these cowboy boots are soooooo comfortable, and they fit LIKE A GLOVE. You can read all about how I came by these cowboy boots here in this post, thanks to my friend Christina.

And yes, this tote bag that I won last spring (at the local fashion show I walked in!) is my favorite bag this fall season.

SIA interpretation: A dark and stormy skirt

It’s time for my Style Imitating Art (SIA) interpretation! This latest challenge was curated by Erin @ Loop Looks.

SIA inspiration pick:

Erin chose this 1939 gouache painting titled “Angel Applicant” and created by artist Paul Klee. You can read more about the painting here on the Met’s site.

"Angel Applicant" by Paul Klee, 1939, is in the Public Domain

My interpretation:

The inspiration painting is mostly black and grey, but I also noted bits of pale pink in the creature’s nostrils and the cloudy bits in the background. I thought this outfit, with its “dark and stormy skirt” and berry cardigan fit in well with the inspiration painting. (Full disclosure — I wore this outfit before Erin chose the inspiration painting — but I do think it ties in well with the challenge.)

And this skirt is one that my friend and fellow librarian Stephanie actually picked for me to style! She also selected my grey-and-black snakeskin wedges to pair with the skirt — she knows how I love to pattern-mix. 😉

I got this skirt years ago when we lived in the UAE, and I was drawn to its stark and stormy floral print. It has double-box pleats on each side, in the front and in the back. This is one of the few items in my closet with box pleats, which can visually widen hips if the pleats spread out too far.

If you don’t remember this box-pleat skirt, don’t worry — it’s been awhile since I’ve worn it or featured it on the blog. You can see it in action here and here, both posts from 2012. Interesting to note that I keep wearing this skirt with shades of purple… 😀

SIA interpretation: Library mural

A quick note that the poll is open to vote for your favorite outfit last month — thanks in advance!

SIA inspiration pick:

And now it’s time for my interpretation of this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, which I curated for this round.

This week’s inspiration pick was suggested by longtime SIA participant, Mike, who also blogs at Post Card Purposes. He took photos of a mural that was recently painted in the library he works at, for a new “tween” area. The mural, “Galaxy,” is by artist Julie Hogarth, who gave her permission to use her work for our SIA inspiration. The mural is very large, encompassing at least three different walls, and includes a range of colors — and sparkle!

My interpretation:

And here’s my inspiration outfit! I had hoped perhaps to take photos in my own library, but alas, time was against me.

Librarian for Life + Style | SIA outfit collage

I wanted to capture the rainbow of colors aspect of the mural — but without looking too kitschy about it. The first item clothing I picked was my yellow cardigan, because it has a pattern of tiny stars — and the mural is called “Galaxy.” 😀 Then came my striped scarf with stripes in several different colors, a purple tank top, and my royal blue tote bag. I kept the rest of the outfit neutral, with dark jeans and brown boots.

Along with the tiny stars on my yellow cardigan, my eyes lit up when I realized I could continue the star theme with these dangly earrings, a birthday gift a few years ago from my friend Stephanie.

SIA interpretation: Whistler watercolor

A note about my posting schedule

I wanted to let my readers know that I will be going back to a posting schedule of 3 posts a week, on a Monday-Wednesday-Friday schedule. This fall quarter is shaping up to be very busy — I will be teaching a credit course, and Sam has a new teaching schedule — and we need time to adjust to our new real-life daily schedule (not least of which for finding time to take photos during the work week).

I plan on continuing on co-hosting Style Imitating Art challenges, as well as my monthly clothing budget post and my outfit round-up post and reader poll. I will be discontinuing my monthly “everyday faves” series.

SIA inspiration:

And now, it’s time for my interpretation of this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, this round curated by SIA co-founder Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey.

Salazar has been scouting out a watercolor painting for awhile, and finally came across a watercolor sketch by James McNeill Whistler via the open content on the Metropolitan Museum of Art website and digital collections. This will be the third time we’ve featured a Whistler painting for SIA, but the first time with a watercolor. And the crowded street scene, all in neutrals, feels like an unusual subject for a watercolor — and perfect for the autumn season!

It took me awhile to come up with my outfit, but finally, I remembered my tan cotton skirt with a soft, watercolor-esque print in shades of neutrals. That was the starting point. And because the watercolor has more of tan & blue tones to me — rather than the lavender & grey tones of the title — I went with navy blue accents with my  navy cardigan and navy tights. My burgundy brogues were a practical choice, as well as a color choice that still fit the inspiration piece.

My tote bag — doctor’s bag? — was the final piece I added to the outfit. It FINALLY feels like fall around here, in all its drizzly and cool PNW glory — so I can use this gorgeous bag with its wool fabric sides. It fit in with the color scheme of my outfit (and the inspiration watercolor) but added its own cool texture and shape to the overall look.

I felt my outfit looked a little retro-inspired, with the combination of the full skirt + tights + brogues. It was a professional development day on campus — also known as in-service — and I got lots of compliments on my outfit from colleagues. 😀

And because it was cold and rainy, I got to wear my navy trench coat again!

Red + chambray casual | Ruston Way waterfront

One last summer casual look before fall officially begins…

I did not plan on taking photos of this casual outfit, so you are getting a totally unvarnished look, one without any jewelry or makeup. We had time to catch up on a lot of house projects over my mini-break after summer term ended, so we decided to get out of the house and get some iced coffee one afternoon and then decided impromptu to enjoy the sunshine and cool breeze along the Ruston Way waterfront.

If you’re a longtime reader (as always, thank you!), then you will be familiar with Ruston Way, as we have taken numerous photographs along this long stretch of waterfront, starting here in this post. There are a series of parks all along Ruston Way and amazing, historical sights, including this stretch in which the city has preserved the remnants of an old dock. I thought it would be interesting to take photos along this striking backdrop.

For work on our house projects, I was already wearing these red cargo shorts, red sports bra, and grey lace-up sporty flats. To go out in public, I simply changed out the grubby tee I was wearing for a thin chambray button-front shirt. A really quick change! My red patterned tote bag was hanging on a hook near the door, so it was easy to grab that on the way out.

My main takeaway here is if you have classic, basic pieces, it doesn’t need to take much — or much time — to look “put together.”
