Feeling like fall | Argyle sweater + suede heels

I totally feel like I am channeling the fall season in today’s outfit. It’s full of texture and fall colors — and of course, layers! Fall, or autumn, is my favorite season, so I felt GREAT in this outfit! And I wore it during a long day, as I wore it to work and then out to dinner and a literary event afterward.

With the scarf layer:

First, a look at my outfit with all the layers, including a dark denim jacket and cozy rust-colored scarf that I fashion-swapped years ago. You can’t see all the patterns yet, but just wait!

With the denim jacket layer:

Removing the scarf reveals the argyle pattern on the front of my sweater. (And you can tell that I color-coordinated my scarf with the rust color in the argyle pattern! Hi, my name is Jen, and I love color-coordinating 😉 )

Accessories:

Directly below is a look at the “Librarian” pin a former student gifted me, which I revealed first on Instagram here.

And of course, a closer look at brown suede and navy tweed kitten heels! These were my first “grown-up” pair of heels I ever bought myself for work, right after I got my library science master’s degree. They’re Franco Sarto, and they are GLORIOUS — and comfortable! I first bought them in Texas, and I have kept them all these years, although I only get to wear them a few times a year up here in rainy PNW.

With just one sweater layer:

And finally, my outfit without the extra layers. I love how this sweater pattern-mixes all on its own, with argyle in the front and stripes in the back. So fun!

SIA interpretation: Pocket flasks

A quick reminder that the poll is open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from October — thanks in advance!

And now it’s time for my interpretation of the latest Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge. 🙂

Inspiration:

Last week, Daenel @ Living Outside the Stacks chose a photograph of blown glass Pocket Flasks, made sometime in the U.S. between 1800 and 1860.

In Daenel’s own words:

“I chose the Pocket Flask because I like the colors of the different flasks, but it was the patterns that really intrigued me.

Interpretation:

I also loved how the colors and patterns reflected our autumn season. So that’s where I began. My cable knit sweater — which I love so much, so comfy, and it’s still available! — echoed the patterns of the blown glass flasks, and my plaid infinity scarf and cognac boots brought in all the different fall colors.

I also wore my topaz drop earrings, which reminded me of the blown glass.

I also wanted to take pics against a backdrop of multi-colored fall leaves. The shape of the leaves also, for me, echoes the shapes and patterns in the glass, and showcases a variety of colors, as well.

SIA interpretation: Cleopatra

A quick note that the monthly outfit reader poll is still open — thanks in advance!

Inspiration:

And now for my interpretation for the most recent Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge. After these past hella-emotional weeks for women, Theda Bara’s steady, strong, take-no-prisoners stare in the poster for the silent film Cleopatra (1917) continues to give me life. You can also read more about the background of the film, and Theda Bara’s star-defining turn as Cleopatra, online here and here.

I also love the colors in the poster, as they feel very seasonal. There is also a more brightly colored (restored?) version here, but I prefer the version seen in the collage below.

I’m usually a smiley blogger, but not today. I am channeling Bara’s steady, challenging gaze — and stance!

Interpretation:

I knew that I had to wear one of my Egyptian scarab pendant necklaces with whatever I wore, but it actually took me awhile to figure out my outfit for this SIA challenge. Nothing was really gelling in my mind (see here where I explain my mental process for putting outfits together), until I spied my embroidered navy and tomato red tank top, and the lightbulb in my brain went off.

In the inspiration movie poster, you can spy a couple of obelisks framing the sides. I did a Google search for obelisks in Tacoma, and the results came up with a few tombstones in the Old Tacoma Cemetery (plus it’s October and Halloween season, so again, it felt appropriate to take photos in a cemetery). The stone for these obelisks also gave off a sheen that fit the colors of the inspiration poster.

I stepped it up with the makeup that day, lining my eyes with eye liner and bronze-y eye shadow, as well as a coral lip stain to coordinate with my tank top and ring. I wore one of my Egyptian scarab pendants — you can see a better closeup of it in the collage below — plus two gold statement rings, one coral and one smoky quartz.

It’s hard to see, but my brown wide-leg trousers have metallic burgundy threads running through the fabric, so they give off a bit of a shimmer. (I also managed to let out an additional inch from the hem of these trousers over the summer, so I feel more comfortable wearing them with heels.)

We visited the Old Tacoma Cemetery one day last week after work, and the late afternoon light was quite lovely. No one else was there at the cemetery, which seems to be very well-kept. We will definitely be back! (It might seem strange to some, but both Sam and I have always found cemeteries to be quite peaceful and pleasant places to be in. We have visited several cemeteries over the years, even on vacations; whenever we visit one, we take time to straighten up flowers or offerings that have fallen over. And RIP to the Durr family, whose family markers are featured in this post.)

Black jacket + red gingham

This is an outfit I wore during an in-service day, a day that the weather finally started to break toward fall. Which meant LAYERS! 😀

I layered my black canvas moto-style jacket over a buttoned-up gingham shirt and trouser jeans. This combo felt professional yet also a bit casual, which feels like my sweet spot for work wear.

I thought it would be fun to mix feminine and masculine details. The moto-style jacket is all hard angles, which feels a bit masculine, as does the shirt that I buttoned all the way up (I didn’t want the shirt collar to fight with the jacket collar). The feminine details boils down to my retro-style silver hoop earrings, classic red lipstick, and the fun striped dress charm on my structured tote bag.

And I thought it would be a bit cheeky to wear trousers to contrast with the dress charm! 😉

I was originally planning on wearing my classic black ballet flats, but at the last minute, I thought wearing my snakeskin flats with the red patent leather cap toe would be fun. It added one more pattern to my outfit — pattern-mixing, yessssss!!!! — plus it carried the color of red all throughout my outfit. And I got compliments from colleagues on these shoes all day long! Plus, it was fun to see my colleagues’ reactions when I told them I had scored these at the first estate sale I went to, which I detailed last year in this post. 😀

SIA interpretation: Courthouse ceiling

Time for my interpretation of the most recent Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge!

Inspiration:

Last week, Daenel @ Living Outside the Stacks chose one of her own photographs, one of the ceiling in the Old Courthouse in St. Louis, Missouri, a photograph she took in 2013 during a family trip. You can read more about the Old Courthouse — which is now located in the Gateway Arch National Park! — here and here.

Daenel chose this photograph of because of the soft muted colors and the architectural features.

Interpretation:

The starting points for my SIA-inspired outfit were two items:

  • my Wedgwood Jasperware pendant, which has the soft blue color as well as the architectural feel of the ceiling
  • my geometric-print slip-on sneakers, again due to the geometric feel of the design and the soft, muted color combo of grey, pink, blue, and white

At first, I was thinking of an outfit created around one or the other — and then I realized that I could combine the two! And I added additional patterns to the mix with my berry & navy gingham shirt and striped tote bag. This outfit was super comfy but still professional enough for in-service week before our fall quarter begins.

Above and below are closeups of this beautiful Wedgwood Jasperware pendant necklace, a piece of jewelry my mom got in England decades ago. You’ve seen me wear this necklace before here and here. The chain fell at an awkward length in regards to my dress, so I shortened the chain by tying a rubber elastic around the end. It worked! 🙂 I kept the rest of my jewelry very simple.
