SIA interpretation: Courthouse ceiling

Time for my interpretation of the most recent Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge!

Inspiration:

Last week, Daenel @ Living Outside the Stacks chose one of her own photographs, one of the ceiling in the Old Courthouse in St. Louis, Missouri, a photograph she took in 2013 during a family trip. You can read more about the Old Courthouse — which is now located in the Gateway Arch National Park! — here and here.

Daenel chose this photograph of because of the soft muted colors and the architectural features.

Interpretation:

The starting points for my SIA-inspired outfit were two items:

  • my Wedgwood Jasperware pendant, which has the soft blue color as well as the architectural feel of the ceiling
  • my geometric-print slip-on sneakers, again due to the geometric feel of the design and the soft, muted color combo of grey, pink, blue, and white

At first, I was thinking of an outfit created around one or the other — and then I realized that I could combine the two! And I added additional patterns to the mix with my berry & navy gingham shirt and striped tote bag. This outfit was super comfy but still professional enough for in-service week before our fall quarter begins.

Above and below are closeups of this beautiful Wedgwood Jasperware pendant necklace, a piece of jewelry my mom got in England decades ago. You’ve seen me wear this necklace before here and here. The chain fell at an awkward length in regards to my dress, so I shortened the chain by tying a rubber elastic around the end. It worked! 🙂 I kept the rest of my jewelry very simple.

Everyone is welcome to participate — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also welcome — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator, Daenel, at livingoutsidethestacks@gmail.com by this Tuesday, September 25th. Daenel will then post the SIA round-up on her blog, Living Outside the Stacks, this Wednesday, September 26th.

Cat wings | Dressing up a cat tee for work with a midi skirt

This is my final summer work look (although I’ve been on summer break for a few weeks; my 3-day-a-week posting schedule can delay outfit postings), although it could TOTALLY work for a fall work outfit for those, like me, who are still experiencing hotter temps.

So it still feels like good timing for this outfit, which for me has ALL THE THINGS:  cats, more cats, a midi skirt, pattern-mixing, comfy tee, statement earrings, red lipstick, and a public art mural backdrop.

That’s right, I’m doubling down on the cats! #noregrets

And I had to choose WHICH cat tote to pair with my cat tee, because I have more than one cat-print tote bag. I am that kind of cat lady, yes I am. Again, #noregrets. I chose my multi-cat tote bag over my bolder “Meow!” cat tote, as seen here, because I wanted my Jason Wu for Target cat tee to take center stage.

Ahhhh, red lipstick and retro-style silver hoop earrings. Classic. And my silver metallic nail polish matching my earrings? Hello, my name is Jen, and I love to color-coordinate. 😉

The backdrop is one of wings in a Native American art style. It’s actually one pair of wings in a trio of wing murals, and I’ve been wanting to take photos here for awhile. I particularly like this pair of wings, because of the bold lines and color combo!

Late summer casual vibes | Paisley top + pink jeans

I was FEELIN’ this color combination the day I wore this outfit. It’s not a common color combo — dusty rose and light brown — but it feels like it just epitomizes late summer, doesn’t it?

I woke up this morning wanting to wear this thrifted top, with its unusual and distinctive u-shape neckline. And then I realized that it would pair well with my dusty rose jeans. The two items doesn’t exactly match, but my goodness, does they ever coordinate nicely together.

I pulled up the hems of the jeans for a more casual feel, for a decidedly behind-the-scenes kind of day at the library. So although I did wear this outfit for work, this could just as easily be a casual outfit. I grinned when a co-worker saw me and exclaimed, “You look like summer!” 😀

I have been digging bronze-y and metallic tones this summer, and they were the right call again for this outfit. The dusty rose jeans just call out for metallics, don’t they?

I am mixing together brass (bracelet), bronze (hoop earrings + tote bag), cognac (wedges), rose gold (stud earrings), and a bit of metallic silver (nail polish). It doesn’t sound like all those different tones should work together, and yet they do. I actually really love the dash of metallic silver — so unexpected!

SIA: Madame X | Mixing metallics with a black maxi

It’s time for my interpretation for this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge!

Inspiration:

Daenel @ Living Outside the Stacks chose John Singer Sargent’s stunning 1884 portrait of young socialite Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau. The painting is titled Portrait of Madame X, or more simply, Madame X. You can read more about the painting online here.

My interpretation:

My black v-neck maxidress is a total no-brainer for this inspiration painting. And while I wore the white cardigan to make this maxi more appropriate for work, it still captures that “bare white shoulder” look of Madame X.

I picked up this bronze bag at Tacoma’s Pride Festival last month, a bag made of recycled leather and made by a local artisan, Patrick Kdep of Patrick’s Creations. I didn’t think about it on the day, but after looking at the photos, I like how the white liner of the bag goes with my white cardigan.

And the bronze color of the tote bag echoes the bronze-y tones of the table and backdrop of the inspiration painting.

Below is a closeup of how I mixed metallics for the accessories:

  • rose gold (square stud earrings + bangles)
  • bronze (hoop earrings + recycled leather handbag)
  • pewter (the upper strap on my metallic sandals)

And finally, last but not least, are a couple of photos from other places in our front yard where we took photos. I included them because I liked how the different backdrops brought out different tones in the metallics: the cooler green leaves of the tree highlight the cooler tones of my outfit, while the sienna red of our fence brings out the warmer tones of the metallics and bag.

Summer work casual | Grey tunic with pops of red

A quick note that the poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from last month — thanks in advance!

I played with proportions and pops of color for today’s summer casual work outfit. I layered my grey tunic over red ankle pants, and I added more pops of red with the red floral ribbon belt I made this past year, a red patterned tote bag, and a red charm on my silver charm necklace.

Below is a closeup of the double-sided fabric belt I made this past year. One side is a red floral ribbon; the other side is a red and green plaid. For a more casual feel, I just looped the ends over to hang down.

Below is another closeup of the red ribbon side of the fabric belt, along with my silver charm necklace. I could have worn any number of earrings in my jewelry collection with this outfit, but in the end, I went with my silver + peridot small hoops, to bring out the green in the floral ribbon print.
