Remixing my Wonder Woman tee at a local comicon

Thanks in advance for voting for your favorite outfit of mine from last month! ūüôā

I am combining two new items in this month, showcasing my equal love for Audrey Hepburn (my hoop earrings, an early birthday present from my mom) AND Wonder Woman (my new tee). Just put your hands together…

The first time you saw me wearing my new Wonder Woman tee, I wore it with red ankle pants. I kept to the red theme, but this time, I remixed the tee by layering it over my red-and-gold cotton dress. (You can see the dress in its entirety here.)

Librarian for Life + Style | Two Wonder Women! At the Tacoma Public Library Atomic Comicon

I wore this Wonder Woman-inspired outfit to Tacoma Public Library’s annual Atomic Comicon. OF COURSE I had to pose with the new Wonder Woman herself! I also enjoyed the Lego display, with Wonder Woman leading the Justice League, as seen below. ūüėÄ

And at the button-making table, I was inspired to make my own Wonder Woman button, which I added to my tote bag.

And how perfect are my new hoop earrings with this outfit? They perfectly echo the circular Wonder Woman logo on my tee. And I’m just loving the metallics in general with this outfit, from my earrings to the tee to the gold lotus blossom print on my dress to my criss-cross sandals.

SIA interpretation: On the road

Time for my interpretation of this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, this round¬†curated by SIA co-founder Salazar¬†@ 14 Shades of Grey.

Inspiration to interpretation:

Salazar chose¬†an animated GIF inspired by a flower seller in Vietnam from a series of illustrated, animated GIFs called “On the Road” by Chinese artist and illustrator Oamul.

Librarian for Life + Style | SIA 'On the Road' inspiration collage

I thought my new-to-me floral shirtdress from the 2013 Phillip Lim for Target collection, as detailed in my monthly budget adventures post from last week, totally fit the inspiration bill! And there are lots of flowers, both in the print of my shirtdress, plus in the bright red rhododendron flower bush behind me. (There’s a clump of orangey-red flowers in the illustration.) And there are bits of black in the flower seller’s outfit, who is also wearing strappy flat sandals. ūüėÄ

It also felt fitting that the inspiration artist, Oamul, is Chinese, and my shirtdress was designed by Phillip Lim, an Asian-American artist of Chinese and Cambodian descent born in Thailand. Cheers to awesome Asian designers and artists!

It’s called a “shirtdress” but it is WAY too short for me to wear it as a dress. It also has an interesting and different cut on the back, which you can glimpse in the pics just above and below. So I just treated the dress as a tunic, layering it over black leggings. And HELLO perfect match with my tan-and-black colorblock tote!

This pattern is SO interesting, as is the cut of this dress/tunic, that I kept getting compliments on this outfit, both when I first wore it on the weekend and when I rewore it the next day to work. I felt cool and comfortable in this combo.

The backdrop for all the photos is the Fireman’s Park, located in downtown Tacoma across the old City Hall building. It’s this very sweet little park tucked away on the side; its location on the Metro Parks website is described as “carved into a hillside.” Downtown Tacoma is full of interesting public art and buildings and tiny little niches.

Retro inspiration | Sailor-style trousers

A few¬†years ago, I did a collage of me and my maternal grandmother, the side of my family that I most resemble, and that post remains one of my very favorite posts. (And y’all recently enjoyed a collage of me and my mom for Mother’s Day!).

Back when I did the post of my grandmother, I mentioned that I had a few different candid photos of her with the idea that I would do more posts of me wearing outfits inspired by her. I didn’t immediately follow up on that idea (sorry!), but I’ve never forgotten that idea. So when I was recently going back over those old photos of my grandmother, I realized that I now had another piece in my wardrobe, a pair of sailor-style pants I picked up this past fall, that I could wear for another retro- and family-inspired look.

I basically recreated my grandma’s look with modern versions, starting with my wide-legged, sailor-style trousers. I then thought of my black wedge sandals, which looked a little similar to the bit of her black shoes visible in her photograph. I echoed her¬†polka-dotted button-front blouse with my own diamond-print button-front blouse (the print looks like tiny polka dots from afar). And my new black tote bag is structured enough to play off the hard case she’s carrying in the photo.

I then carried my black rain coat when we took photos, to more closely mimic the inspiration photograph.

And y’all know me and details! I filled in my eyebrows a little more heavily and went red on the lips for a more ’40s makeup look. (The matte finish on my laps is due to just using red lip liner on my lips, instead of red lipstick.)

I think one of the main reasons I didn’t immediately do more of these retro inspiration looks of my grandma’s is because I cut my hair all off later that year into a ’20s-inspired bob. Since my grandmother’s look in these photographs is so clearly from the ’40s, I didn’t feel I could really channel her in the same way that I had in that first post.

I still have short hair, so what made this time different? First, I no longer have the blunt, ’20s-style bangs I used to have, and my bangs are long enough now to play with. My recent hair experiments with the Kenra hairsprays have also given me more confidence in¬†playing with my short hair! Therefore, I decided that I could do a slight nod to the ’40s hairstyles with a little pin curl of my bangs. So I rolled my bangs over and into a slight curl at the end, and then pinned and sprayed the bangs. It’s subtle, but it was enough for me. ūüôā

Monthly budget adventures (May 2017)

It’s time to see what my monthly clothing budget adventures were for this month! I kept it pretty low-key this past month, with only one purchase.

Wallet replacement

I have been needing¬†to replace my cat wallet, seen here, and I couldn’t¬†find my old Nine West wallet that I used to use. So one day, we happened to be shopping near a Ross outlet store, so we went in just to see… and I came out with this black-and-white patterned wallet.

And getting this wallet at a discount was… wait for it… easy on the wallet! ūüėČ

  • Wallet, Tommy Hilfiger via Ross: ¬†paid $14.99 (originally $39)

And below are three Tommy Hilfiger wallets that are very similar in design to the one I picked up:

Total spent for this month: $14.99
Total savings for this month:  $24.01

Total spent for this year:  $544.47
Total savings for this year:  $425.74

Giveaways and gifts

Sam won a gorgeous handbag (!) at the MOE Gallery fashion show that I modeled for recently.¬†Of course then it became MY¬†gift! ūüėÄ This is such a well-made bag, with the thicker fabric panels, sturdy handles, interior lining, and metal studs on the bottom. Since the sides are wool, I will probably wait until fall to really use it — sweet anticipation!

My friend and fellow librarian Stephanie recently stayed over for a girls’ weekend, and gifted me a pair of handcrafted vintage earrings. They are Native American, combining turquoise, wood, and silver.¬†Beautiful! The square button shape makes me think of mid-century design. She thought I would like them because I have other turquoise and silver jewelry, as seen here, plus she knows that I often wear my wood JORD watch, as seen here. She knows me so well! ūüėÄ

Speaking of earrings and gifts… My mother-in-law recently went on a Caribbean cruise vacation¬†and picked up this pair of beaded earrings for me. So sweet! I love the inky, speckled midnight color of the beads.

Black floral tunic remix

Another day, another remix… this time, I am remixing my black floral tunic that I thrifted years ago.¬†Here are different ways I’ve worn this tunic:

This tunic is one I keep out year-round, as it works for every season. Its fabric is light enough to wear in spring and summer, along with its floral motif. And its darker colors make it appropriate for fall and winter seasons. I thrifted this tunic years ago at my favorite local resale boutique in Portland, Here We Go Again.

Comfort is the first rule of my personal style, and this outfit is super comfortable. After all, it’s a tunic, leggings, and flat boots! It’s like a work version of pyjamas, as far as I’m concerned. Yet it still looks appropriate enough for work — at least, appropriate for where I work.

And of course I enjoyed color-coordinating my accessories by going for burgundy statement earrings and my darker red leather tote bag.
