Red + chambray casual | Ruston Way waterfront

One last summer casual look before fall officially begins…

I did not plan on taking photos of this casual outfit, so you are getting a totally unvarnished look, one without any jewelry or makeup. We had time to catch up on a lot of house projects over my mini-break after summer term ended, so we decided to get out of the house and get some iced coffee one afternoon and then decided impromptu to enjoy the sunshine and cool breeze along the Ruston Way waterfront.

If you’re a longtime reader (as always, thank you!), then you will be familiar with Ruston Way, as we have taken numerous photographs along this long stretch of waterfront, starting here in this post. There are a series of parks all along Ruston Way and amazing, historical sights, including this stretch in which the city has preserved the remnants of an old dock. I thought it would be interesting to take photos along this striking backdrop.

For work on our house projects, I was already wearing these red cargo shorts, red sports bra, and grey lace-up sporty flats. To go out in public, I simply changed out the grubby tee I was wearing for a thin chambray button-front shirt. A really quick change! My red patterned tote bag was hanging on a hook near the door, so it was easy to grab that on the way out.

My main takeaway here is if you have classic, basic pieces, it doesn’t need to take much — or much time — to look “put together.”

Adding interest with accessories | Maxidress + cardigan combo

Today’s outfit is not edgy or exciting, and I didn’t originally plan on taking photos of this casual work outfit when I got dressed that morning. Pairing a maxidress and a cardigan is almost like a work version of pajamas for me — sooooooo comfy and easy.

So why take photos at all? I realized at the end of the day it might be a useful example of demonstrating how much accessories can add interest to an outfit. If you look at the photos above and below, the accessories that add interest are:

  1. at the top, a silk headband in a colorful fern pattern and light pink bead earrings;
  2. in the middle, a striped tote bag; and
  3. at the bottom, strappy metallic sandals in a criss-cross pattern.

The different patterns of my headband and tote bag don’t match, of course, but they do “go” together color-wise, as they tie into the berry-colored cardigan.

The backdrop is a mural at a local community park. The animal heads atop the human-shaped bodies are a little freaky, but I thought the purple tones played nicely with the colors of my outfit.

Summer work casual | Grey library tee + tan trousers + pewter wedges

On a summer work day that included multiple meetings, I wore a basic go-to outfit formula that I utilize time and again when I happen to be working in summer quarter:  a nicer tee with wide-legged trousers and strappy sandals. The trousers give it the necessary work-appropriate edge, while the tee is casual and comfy, and the sandals allow for air flow in the heat.

Above and below are closeups of my accessories, including my pewter wedge sandals (which have a rubber sole, so they’re particularly useful while walking across campus) and my earrings below. I debated amongst several earring choices, but I went with these “tiki-style” bead earrings that my paternal grandmother made decades ago, to add a bit of fun and whimsy to my ensemble. (Note:  We took photos of this outfit before I got my new purse that replaced this tote bag.)

And of course, my “NEVER FORGET” library card catalog tee adds its own whimsy! It also reinforces my role as librarian in whatever campus meeting I’m involved in, and helps get across my sense of humor to anyone who might not know me yet. 😉 (Yes, I really do think all about all these details when I get dressed for the day.)

Monthly budget adventures (August 2017)

It’s time to see what my monthly clothing budget adventures were for this month!

Replacements

When we went on a recent shopping trip to Kohl’s to replace a few of his items, I also was able to replace a couple of items of my own this month, including a new tan-and-black purse to replace my old Christian Siriano for Payless tote bag, seen here. And it came with a fun ladybug tag — I have a thing for ladybugs! 😀 I also was able to replace my older pair of navy opaque tights.

  • Navy tights, Simply Vera Very Wang for Kohl’s {exact}:  paid $11 (original price $16, 30% off coupon)

Shopping local

We went shopping at local stores on my birthday, where I picked up a lovely pair of painted resin earrings. They reminded me of the “Put a bird on it!” saying from Portlandia. 🙂

Also on my birthday, I picked up a black sun hat at a local resale boutique, Megs & Mo.

And on Sam’s birthday, we enjoyed a local street fair, where I spied this colorful cotton tunic. It will go very nice with leggings and skinny jeans, I think!

Chance find

While we were out and about a couple of weekends ago, Sam discovered this lilac beaded necklace in a tree. (Yes, in a tree.) So he took it down, and I added a new necklace to my collection by chance!

Donations

I also went through my closet recently, in order to identify some items to replace, as well as a few pieces that no longer fit. That included, as seen below:

Gifts

As I highlighted earlier this week, a friend gifted me this gorgeous pair of cognac-colored Lucchese cowboy boots!

Eyelet + gingham summer casual

I’ve worn this eyelet + gingham combo more than one weekend this summer. It’s been a hot one, y’all! I can’t remember if we took pics the second or third time I wore this outfit, but never late than never… 😉

And below is a closeup of the mix of textures and prints, the eyelet and the gingham. And along with the checkered fedora, which I borrowed from Sam, this is yet another example of subtle pattern-mixing! 😀

And I’ve been wanting to take photos in front of this fountain in downtown Tacoma, on Broadway and 11th. On a weekend while doing multiple errands downtown, we took advantage of the opportunity. It’s often easier for me to pose for photos in front of a “tourist-y” location or backdrop, since I don’t stand out or attract any extra attention for taking photos. 🙂

And when I wear this eyelet top, I wear a red sports bra underneath — a variation of my sports-bra-as-tank-top trick — to cut down on sweat around the middle. Real life, right? 😉
