Casual neutrals + fox print scarf

A quick note that the poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit from February. Thanks in advance!

I mentioned this yesterday on my Facebook page, about how it’s nice to see spring clothing starting to pop up on some other style bloggers’ sites, as spring is becoming a reality for many people in many part of this country. But not this part of the country, and not this site. Yesterday, we experienced snow and wintry mix. Last week, we had hail. So y’all will continue to see several outfits featuring winter layers, tights, boots, and coats — including today’s outfit!

The germ of today’s outfit was inspired by this casual winter outfit I pinned years ago from Crazy Style Love. The starting point for me — what turned on the lightbulb, so to speak — was the idea of an attention-getting scarf on top of a classic tan overcoat. Simple as that. Jenny’s scarf is bright pink and attention-getting in terms of color, whereas my scarf is neutral-colored but attention-getting in terms of its novelty print of foxes. If it had not been raining, I would have also worn my animal-print flats (Jenny’s heels are animal print), but alas, I had to err on the side of practicality. 😉

I wore this outfit on a casual weekend morning, on our way to coffee and a late-morning movie. (We found a local movie house that plays new movies on weekends before noon for $7! Cheaper prices plus fewer people in the theater = mutual movie-going happiness.)

The dock was less crowded, as well, with more birds than people. I enjoyed that this bird decided to hang out with us during our quick photo-shoot. It was decidedly non-plussed.

We stopped off before our morning movie date to stroll one of the docks along the Ruston Way waterfront. This is also the same dock we took photos at this past summer! We often enjoy walking or going places in the rain — it always means less people! 😉 And I think the water, as well as the waterfront, are beautiful in different ways in the rain. There’s a unique kind of serenity to gazing out over a body of water when it’s overcast and a bit foggy.

But in addition to a multitude of birds taking advantage of a mostly deserted dock, there was a lone fisherman on one end — decked out (har har) in a bright yellow slicker. We couldn’t resist taking photos of the opportune moment. 🙂

One final look at my neutral winter layers and fox-print scarf. And another example of mixing black and brown neutrals together!

Brown with bright pops of blue

A quick note that the poll is open to vote for your favorite outfit from last month!

It seems I love pairing this brown print dress with bright, solid colors; the last time I wore this dress on the blog, I paired it with a bright green button-front. This time, I paired it with a bright blue cardigan. I had first thought of wearing my rust-colored tights, as seen here, but at the last minute, I went bold with my bright blue tights.

Sam jokingly called me “Smurfette,” which I didn’t mind. Smurfette was a sassy gal. 😉 I liked the bright blue — it really pops against the brown!

I had first thought of wearing my bronze Mary Jane pumps, but then I spied my bronze heels and my brown loafer heels. So I gathered all three pairs and asked Sam to make the final decision. He chose the brown loafer heels, a classic choice. 🙂

I also brought out my rope braid trick again for my bangs, to bring some texture and interest to my short hair. I got quite a few compliments on my hairstyle that day!

Grown-up school girl in knee socks + library card tote

As promised, here are more photos and details of what I wore on our anniversary outing this past weekend, when Sam and I both donned our JORD wood watches. Click here to view Sam’s outfit and closeups of his new JORD watch.

Plus, don’t forget to enter my giveaway for a $100 JORD e-gift code! Deadline to enter is Feb. 19th.

I like how the dark sandalwood of this wood watch warms up cooler colors, like the grey of this cardigan. I had originally picked out this watch back in 2015 because the dark brown of the band and the black of the watch face would go with lots of different outfits. And I have found that to be true! 🙂

You can also see more of my JORD watch faves here on this Pinterest board.

We took photos in a nearby park on our way to a “boozy brunch” anniversary outing at the Pacific Grill in downtown Tacoma. I donned my grey over-the-knee socks for the first time, and I am really liking the pointelle design on these socks! And yes, I was totally inspired by to pair my grey socks, burgundy brogues, and skirt together after seeing ModCloth’s lead outfit pic for this cat-and-books-print skirt.

Sam said he especially liked this “grown-up school girl” outfit, with my knee socks and book-print skirt and brogues and library card tote bag.

I liked this outfit so much, I wore it again to work this week!

Burgundy sweater remix with burgundy booties

Today’s casual work outfit started out much more complicated, with me mentally trying to layer about three different things and just not feeling it. So I simplified my outfit to a long sweater + skinny jeans + ankle booties. And once I stepped into these gorgeous burgundy booties, all seemed right with this outfit. 😉

After I wore this outfit, I realized it’s essentially the same outfit that I wore for Valentine’s Day in 2015 — with the same tote bag! — but with different shoes. (And I added a scarf to my tote bag this time around.) My style is consistent, y’all. But I like that it demonstrates, yet again, how much a difference accessories and shoes can make, and that remixing = real life!

At the last minute, I added my new-to-me vintage plaid scarf to my tote bag as a fun accent. There’s a burgundy stripe in the plaid, so I’m staying true to my color-coordinated instincts. 😉

We took these photos by the Sounder train station near the Tacoma Dome, where I spied this little enclave of foliage. I love these bits of nature tucked away in urban landscapes!

I often ask Sam to take some action shots of me walking. It doesn’t work every time, but I loved how Sam captured my gait in this shot. I do like to walk with purpose, which the pic below definitely highlights.

Remixing hearts + shades of red

Last week, I highlighted past fall favorite outfits I would wear again… which is basically what I did with this outfit. This is essentially the same outfit, only with the “completer piece” changed from a light blue cardigan, when I wore it last fall, to a denim jacket this fall. I also changed up the placement of the red fabric belt that came with this eShakti dress.

But those small differences make an impact. My 2015 outfit looks more 1950s retro, with the belted cardigan, while my denim jacket topper this fall helps make my outfit look more modern. Either way, I love this outfit and this heart-print dress!

And the house behind me in the photos? Yep, it’s our new home in Tacoma! ♥

Last time, I wore this belt with the cut-out to the side. This time, I placed the cut-out front and center. I liked that from afar, it looks like banding on the waist of the dress!

I really liked how all the colors came together in this outfit, even with all the different shades of red. I am mixing together bright red (belt), a bright burgundy (coat), a slightly warmer burgundy (tote bag), and a brownish burgundy (tights). Yet it all looks cohesive. Why? I think it comes down to the print of the dress, which has both bright red and burgundy shades in it. Plus, everything else is a neutral, including the white background of the dress, my bronze heels, and my denim jacket.
