SIA interpretation: Light in the dark

It’s time for another Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, this round coming back to me to curate.

SIA inspiration pick:

I chose a striking photographic artwork that I’ve had pinned on my private “SIA Ideas” Pinterest board for awhile. I found this public domain image on Pixabay, and it’s by a 16-year old Italian photographer, Joachim Mayr, who posts images on Pixabay under the username of “By_Jo.” You can see more of his photographs, mostly of closeups of nature and animals, online here.

Still time to participate! Here’s how:

Even though the photo art is pretty simple, there are a few different ways you could go with the inspiration. Color-wise, there’s black and gold, or extend that to yellow or orange or other metallics like rose gold. You could go with a graphic print, or even polka dots. (That would be fun!) You could also go with metallic jewelry or hoops or necklaces or bangles. Lots of options!

Everyone — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! — is welcome to participate. Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also just fine — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator — that’s me! — at librarianforlifestyle@gmail.com by tonight by 10 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST). I will then post the SIA round-up on my blog tomorrow.

My interpretation:

My all-black outfit is right on target with the inspiration photograph, as is the circular Wonder Woman logo in gold on the front. And Wonder Woman herself echoes the feelings I found in this photo, of being brave and hopeful and strong.

Of course, I had to amp up this super casual tee-and-shorts combo with metallic accessories, which also all relate to Wonder Woman, as well as to the inspiration photo:

  • black and gold flip flops (it was not lost on me that when I put my feet together, the straps looked like “W”… and with the double straps, it was CLEARLY “Wonder Woman”…)
  • braided headband with gold bits (the Amazonian women all have braids)
  • gold knot earrings (to echo Wonder Woman’s lasso of truth…)
  • rose gold bangles (yes, I wore an equal number of bangles on each wrist to echo Wonder Woman’s metallic cuffs)

I’m sure all these details were lost on everyone else, but they all made me smile. And of course, I have a style blog outlet to delve into all those details! 😀

And yes, I was mixing metallics with my gold and rose gold tones, but I didn’t let that stop me. This was a good outfit to scoot around town running errands. And I got lots of smiles (and thumbs up) from mothers and daughters wherever we went.

Mixing 3 patterns | Gingham + stripes + geometric print

We had recently planned a picnic lunch out in Wapato Park, in SE Tacoma, and on that day, I woke up energized. I declared, “I want to mix 3 patterns today!” and Sam responded, “Yes, go bold!” 😀

So I mixed bright pink stripes with black/navy gingham shorts and my new geometric-print canvas sneakers from Target. A perfect way to welcome summer, which officially begins tomorrow, June 21st (although technically in the wee hours tonight on the Pacific Coast, due to the time zones).

And by the way, I will be working during summer quarter, starting next week, which I haven’t been able to do for a few years. So you’ll be seeing a mix of casual and work casual outfits this summer, yay!

The backdrop for this first set of photos is the center pagoda pavilion at the main entrance to Wapato Park. It’s pretty breathtaking, particularly with the trees and lake glittering behind it. And I love the curve to the pagoda, which made all kinds of interesting shapes and shadows in the noon-day sun.

And with the angles and all the beams, it was fun to play around during our photo shoot. In the first photo below, I’m stretching out my arm, which makes it look like I’m helping to hold up the ceiling. And in the second photo below, I joked that I was like Samson and pushing aside the columns.

And lastly, (yet) another closeup of my geometric-print canvas sneakers. I LOVE THEM. And paired with this outfit, I love that the shoe’s pattern is kinda what it would look like if you melted together the pink stripes of my top together with the gingham pattern of my shorts. In my mind, this totally pulls together the two contrasting elements of my top and bottom together. Color-coordinating even while mixing prints! All part of the service, y’all. 😉

What I wore for a casual dinner at home with friends

Although I just posted about starting my new job, I’ve still got some casual summer outfits scheduled on the blog! And a quick note that the poll is open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from August — thanks in advance!

This outfit I wore on a late summer evening, while hosting a casual dinner at home with friends. I definitely wanted comfort first — but that’s a given with me! — but, as always, to put a little effort in. (For me, putting a little effort into how I look shows that I care about the people, the event, or the occasion. I wrote more about that here.)

My new paisley tunic top, which I featured in my most recent budget adventures post, fit that sartorial need perfectly for me. And, in general, a print tends to elevate a look.

The horseshoe neckline of this top stands out, so I didn’t want to detract from that. So rather than wearing a necklace, I went for statement earrings instead. My coral bubble earrings tied into both the colors and circular shapes in the fun paisley floral print of the tunic.

By the way, Sam noticed that you can see the back of our new home reflected in my sunglasses! 😎

And, of course, it was perfect that we posed in our new backyard for these photos, since I wore this outfit for a casual evening at home with friends!

The Umbrellas of Tacoma

I’ve been scouting out interesting sights and public art around town for possible photo ops (and future SIA challenges?), and when I discovered the “Umbrella Wall” mural in the Dome District here in Tacoma (near the “Tacoma Dome” stadium), my eyes lit up. Yessssss!

This simple mural of dozens of colorful umbrellas is so cheery and whimsical — and oh-so-perfect for the rainy Pacific Northwest! Of course, we happened to take photos there on a perfectly sunny summer day. I dressed in all solid colors — a rarity these days — no prints or patterns! Unless you count my purse. 😉

The “Umbrella Wall” mural is part of the Tacoma Mural Project, which began in 2010; this mural was painted in 2012. (The mural was also vandalized last year — such a shame! — but they’ve since cleaned it up, although you can still see bits of the defacing up close.) There is a LOT of public art here in Tacoma, as well as local government support for public art initiatives, which is awesome. Individually and collectively, the art really highlights the character and diversity of the city and each neighborhood.

You can tell I had a LOT of fun posing for pictures against this cheerful backdrop! 😀

In keeping with the whimsical nature of the mural backdrop, I also went for whimsy with my accessories, choosing dangly earrings handmade by my paternal grandmother and a handbag made from a vintage book cover. My bright pink cork wedges coordinate with my bright pink blouse (and with my lip stain!).

I don’t think I’ve showcased this vintage book cover purse before on the blog. At a librarian conference years ago in Wisconsin, I won both this “Beach Club” book cover purse and this “Candid Confessions” book cover purse, last seen here, in a prize raffle.

I also brought along my dark denim jacket, for colder indoor air conditioning. I like how the dark denim also adds to the colorblocking theme. And even though it’s all colorblocking — which tends to visually “chop up” the body — I did actually feel “long ‘n’ lean” in this outfit. This was helped, of course, by the height of these platform wedges. 😉

Gotta say, I am LOVING Tacoma and our first summer here. The different places we’ve been to and taken photos thus far have also made for really dynamic photos and posts. Hope y’all are enjoying Tacoma, as well!

Mixing gingham shorts + a cat print tee

Last month, I purchased a pair of gingham shorts, and I’ve worn them AT LEAST six times since. They are sooooooo comfortable. I’ve been wearing them around the house and while errand-running, so I figured I should get busy actually showing them for the blog, right? 😉

When I first bought these shorts, the gingham print looked to me like black-and-white. Online, the color is listed as “midnight,” so now I’ve been wondering if they’re actually a dark navy. Up close, they still look black to me, but in pics, I can see how they look navy. So… I’m deciding they’re BOTH navy and black, and I will wear them with either color. Versatility for the win! 🙂

I also wore a very similar outfit a couple of summers ago, pairing my kitty cat t-shirt with this same checkered fedora. I’m glad I got in some more pattern-mixing this time around. 😉
