Teal green + black + animal print

It’s still cold enough some days for tights, and I do realize this outfit feels more tonally appropriate for fall more so than spring. But there must have been something in the air that day telling me to wear this color combo, because when I got to work, three of my fellow librarians were wearing green + black together. No lie. Style synergy, y’all.

This cardigan looks more forest green in real life, but it came out looking more teal in the morning light. Either way, the color works with the earthy tones of this animal print scarf.

I turned this square scarf into a scarf necklace again, which I find a fun way to wear square scarves. It also keeps the scarf ends out of the way of whatever I’m doing! Here’s another way I’ve done a scarf necklace, which I learned from this scarf-tying video, 57 seconds into the video.

Last but not least, I also wore this outfit with my library-themed tote bag. Why  not add another pattern to the mix? 😉

As the Fug Girls say, “Everyone looks hotter in sunglasses.” 😎

Weather:  Still cold enough for tights

Equestrian-style remix

To celebrate my 5th blog anniversary, I’m personally hosting a giveaway for 5 lucky winners. There are two days left to enter the giveaway, so visit this post for all the details on how to enter.

Remixing the details

This outfit came about because I happened upon one of my earrrrrrrrrly outfits from the blog — as in third outfit EVER (!!!) on the blog — and thought about how I would rewear the equestrian vibe behind this 2012 outfit.

What stayed the same? The scarf, the cognac bow belt, and a grey cardigan (although I replaced my older grey cardigan a couple of years ago with the same cardigan in the same color from the same brand).

What changed? I switched out the boot-cut jeans for a dress (worn as a skirt) and leggings. And I switched out my brown loafer heels for cognac flat-heeled boots. Finally, the equestrian vibe makes more sense with riding boots!

2012 outfit:  Equestrian vibe

Also different? My haircut and glasses. My photos are also better now — and the camera angles more flattering! 😉

I tied this equestrian-print scarf a different way this time. I modified my “scarf necklace” trick, seen here and here, as a way to tuck in the ends of the scarf, but I left the scarf loose in the front so you could see more of the print. A couple of colleagues did notice the scarf trick and asked how I did it! 🙂

I felt the current remix worked better than the older combo because I now have cognac boots, which make more sense with the cognac belt and better overall with the equestrian theme. It also helped to bring in a bright color, like this blue dress, to liven things up a bit. It was a super comfortable outfit to wear to work, and I liked the challenge of remixing an outfit I wore early on at the start of this style blog.

V-Day giveaway winner + anniversary outfit

Have y’all heard of “Galentine’s Day“? I’ve read a few recent blog posts about it, and it comes from an episode of Parks and Recreation. Basically, it’s the day before Valentine’s Day, Feb. 13, when gal pals get together and celebrate. I love that idea! And I love that I get to announce the winner of my jewelry giveaway with Greg Michaels on Galentine’s Day! 🙂 (The winner is announced below, if you’d like to scroll down.)

But first, here’s an outfit that I wore on my recent anniversary with my sweetie. We celebrate both our wedding anniversary (which is in August) as well as the anniversary of how long we’ve been together (which is in February). We enjoyed a lovely weekend afternoon together, indulging in steamed buns at An Xuyen Bakery in SE Portland, chocolates at Missionary Chocolates, and then watching an afternoon movie together (The Imitation Game – highly recommended!). We found an interesting side street location near the bakery to take photos, and the overcast weather provided perfect lighting!

I started off with red because I was wearing red when Sam and I first met ( awwwwwwwwww ). I also wanted to try out my new grey jeans! My red cashmere sweater, which I’ve had a very long time, is getting a bit short, so I layered it over a grey tank top that blended well with the lighter grey tone of the jeans. I added animal print accessories as finishing touches, with my leopard print flats and animal print scarf.

I once again did a “twisted necklace” technique with this scarf (also see here), and I liked that I could wear the same scarf trick two different ways! For the tutorial, watch this “4 Scarves, 16 Ways” video, and the “twisted necklace” scarf trick is at 1:17.

V-Day jewelry giveaway winner

And now for the winner of my Valentine’s Day jewelry giveaway with Greg Michaels. I used the random number generator on the Random.org website to select the winning entry.

The winning entry was #19, which turned out to be Kristin, whose heart-shaped favorite was the Zorya sapphire earrings. Congratulations, Kristin!

Linking up with these lovely ladies!

If you haven’t already, the poll for your favorite outfit of mine in October is open — as well as a bonus extra poll to vote for your favorite short hairstyle. 🙂 Thanks in advance!

It’s that busy teaching time of the term — I teach library and research skills at the college level, embedded in other classes, so my teaching schedule varies in intensity throughout each term — so flats were the order of the day, as well as comfortable layers. The color scheme was all neutrals, and very fall-appropriate.

I paired my new leopard print flats with my black-and-white striped top and olive vest. I added in even more pattern-mixing by tying my animal-print scarf into a kind of necklace. (I also tied a longer scarf into this necklace pattern here in this post.) The scarf really pops against the black and white stripes!

And yet again, I am technically mixing THREE patterns together, as I did in this post and in this post. It’s a rare day now that I don’t pattern-mix, isn’t it? This outfit would have been perfectly fine without the scarf, with just the black-and-white striped top and animal print top (similar to what I wore here when I got my hair cut). But the scarf really does add something extra, doesn’t it? And in my mind, the scarf links back to the color scheme of the flats, and ties everything together. Like the shoes feel purposeful because of the scarf, and not just a random choice. Anyway, that’s how my mind works now when pattern-mixing — I’ve come a long way, y’all! 😉

Scarf necklace

This outfit feels like a mash-up of two past outfits of mine, here and here. I have also been rewatching this “4 Scarves, 16 Ways” video, and was inspired to try out the “twisted necklace” scarf trick (seen at 1:17).

Later that day after work, after shopping at local resale boutique Here We Go Again (you can see what I got in this post), I tried out another of the scarf tricks from the video. This one is called “Infinity,” and you can see it at 0:57 in the scarf-tying video.
