Sam’s style | Neutral layers with a pop of red

If you saw the Style Imitating Art round-up for Erin’s final curated challenge for SIA, then this outfit of Sam’s will be familiar to you. He put this look together himself for the challenge — with no help from me! — and I think it’s a good example of how to layer casual pieces together for a stylish yet still casual men’s look.

Sam layered a red argyle sweater over a basic dark grey tee, then layered a light grey zip-up sweater over that. The two shades of grey create visual depth, and the pop of red peeking through is just so dynamic, isn’t it? The black jeans ground the entire look, and the textured slip-on sneakers are fun and casual, and add a bit more pattern to the entire look. As I’ve said before on this blog, Sam has master-level pattern-mixing skillz.

I just love the photo above of Sam cracking up while I take photos for once. One reason is because he is ALWAYS trying to crack me up when he’s taking photos of me. Another reason is because it’s very true to Sam’s personality. And finally, it shows a peek of his “man bun,” which Sam did specially for me, as I really like it when he puts his hair up into a man bun. (He has curly hair, so that hair style just works on him!) I also like that you can see the streaks of grey on the sides of his hair — the grey streaks go with his grey clothing, hah! 😉

6th blog anniversary | Outtakes

Quick reminder that the favorite outfit poll is up for March — thanks in advance!

Happy 6th blog anniversary to me! Hard to believe it’s been six years since I started this style blog. And it’s become tradition for me to highlight outtakes + bloopers on my blog anniversary (I also do special outtakes posts for my birthday in August and for New Year’s), so here are 6 special sets of outtakes. ‘Cause it’s good not to take yourself too seriously. 😀 Enjoy my awkwardness and goofy side shining through!

This is what happens when the elements (gusts of wind, flowers, branches, etc.) work against me! 😉

This is what happens when I do a little awkward dance in the middle of taking photos. (And one major reason why Sam just keeps taking photos, no matter what.) Seriously, it’s a minor miracle that we get any photos that I can actually use for outfit posts.

This is what happens when I stretch one leg out. Twice. (Why?!?) I am just naturally awkward, y’all.

And last, but not least, this is what happens when I take photos of Sam. What’s good for the goose… 😉

Can’t get enough outtakes and bloopers? No worries, there are many more outtakes posts to enjoy!

Sam’s style, new cardigan + thrifted button-front

I’ve written a lot about cardigans before, like in this “Cardigan collective” post, as cardigans are wardrobe staples for librarians (it’s often very cold in libraries to help preserve the collection, so we librarians gotta layer!). My husband, being an educator himself, also loves cardigans — but it’s harder to find in men’s stores nice cardigans that aren’t really thick or bulky. Has anyone else encountered this?

So it was my mission to find a reliable line of cardigans for Sam, which have turned out to be the thinner merino wool cardigans at J.Crew Factory. Over the last couple of years, he has accumulated J.Crew Factory cardigans in basic neutrals of black, light grey (seen here) and dark grey (seen here). And now there’s a new addition to his J.Crew Factory cardigan collection — a “heather garnet” (and still available online!). It looks like a darker burgundy online, but it’s brighter in real life.

I really love that you can see the heather pattern in this cardigan when you look up close. And it pairs really well with a plaid button-front shirt he thrifted in town last year. The plaid is a dark grey and white with bits of this exact garnet color running through it.

Sam’s SIA interpretation: Dogs playing poker

Surprise, an Style Imitating Art two-fer this week! Stop by Salazar’s blog for the full round-up, and below is my husband Sam’s interpretation of Salazar’s art choice.

The inspiration artwork:

Because the Lunar New Year festival is coming up, and it’s the Year of the Dog, Salazar wanted artwork featuring dogs. She finally settled on “A Bold Bluff,” one of the paintings in C. M. Coolidge’s “Dogs Playing Poker” series. (Did you know that it was a series?! Read all about its fascinating history here.)

Sam’s interpretation:

Sam incorporates all the colors of the inspiration artwork in this “professor casual” outfit he wore on a teaching day. How awesome is this vintage blazer in olive corduroy? He dressed the blazer down in dark jeans and sneakers, but added his own fun touches with the Fraser tartan scarf and a new knit hat! Our friend Stephanie knitted this hat for him as a Christmas gift this past winter, and he’s been wearing it a lot.

Here’s a better look at the colors in this knit hat. And it’s perfect for this SIA challenge, as it incorporates all the colors in the inspiration artwork!

Want to join in the SIA fun next time? Every Monday, I feature an SIA post, and the inspiration challenges are chosen by one of the SIA co-hosts: me, Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey, and Erin @ Loop Looks. Next week, Erin will choose the SIA inspiration artwork!

Sam’s style | Burberry tie + overcoat

One last reminder to please vote for your favorite outfit of mine from last month — thanks in advance!

Sam’s classes that he’s been teaching this fall quarter are early-morning classes, so I often don’t get to see him until after I get off work, except on days that I work the night shift at the library. This day (which fortunately was a night shift day for me), I had to take photos of him after work because, HELLO. My man looks GOOOOOOOD, y’all. Professional, sharp, stylish. (Swoon.)

And the cognac shoes and belt? Brilliant! The lighter color of these faux-leather accessories really sets off the cooler colors of the lavender button-front and berry colors of this Burberry tie we thrifted this past summer. (Does that tie look familiar? I’ve also worn it already — as a belt!)

Sam also likes to have fun with the details. One of his (male) students cracked up when he spied Sam’s cuff links — which are in the shape of the Transformers. Such a cheeky detail! (And so very Sam! 😉 )
