Experimenting with lip liner and lip stains

I’ve been experimenting lately with layering lip stains over lip liner, so I thought I’d document it (finally) for the blog. If you’re a longtime reader (thank you!), then you know that I’ve long loved lip stains, and I’ve written before about layering lip stains over other lip stains, like here in this post.

Recently, I’ve liked the look of layering neutral-colored lip stains over my red lip liner. Here are the steps I do to achieve this subtler take on the classic red lip:

Step 1. Choose liner and lip stain

Details:

Step 2:  Outline lips with the lip liner

Funny story:  After I’d lined my lips but before I’d filled in the liner, as seen above, Sam stopped outside the bathroom to ask me something. While I answered him, he had a funny look on his face — he said it was mesmerizing to watch the lip liner “move” while I was talking. Hah!

P.S. It feels so weird to take selfies in the bathroom for makeup posts.

Step 3:  Fill in the rest of lips with the lip liner

I generally prefer to fill in my entire lips with lip liner, just to have a more natural look for when the lipstick or lip stain on top fades or comes off. The trick is to choose a non-drying lip liner. I really love this L’Oreal Colour Riche line of lip liners because it doesn’t dry out my lips.

Step 4:  Blot, and then layer the neutral lip stain over the lip liner

The neutral lip stain not only adds shine to the lip liner, but it softens the color a bit. I’ve really enjoyed how it’s not a bright red but also not a coral. It’s this nice in-between color, one with depth to it, thanks to the combination of the liner and lip stain. And because it’s lip stain, it doesn’t feel as “high stakes” as red lipstick, if that makes any sense.

Step 5:  Enjoy!

Here’s how this exact lip liner + lip stain combo looks in natural light:

I also did the same lip liner + lip stain trick for our Audrey Hepburn style inspiration mini-series, as you can see in the color version of the closeup below:

Pencil skirt work casual

If you haven’t already voted, a quick reminder that the poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from last month! 😀

This outfit is quite similar to this outfit that I wore last month:  same color palette of red + grey + black; a grey library-themed tee; the same red cotton jacket + black striped canvas flats. But there’s one major difference — this time, instead of black ankle pants, I wore my stretchy black pencil skirt. This simple swap really changes the whole look for me!

Also, as I frequently like to say, remixing = real life!

Pairing a pencil skirt with sneakers feels so cool and sporty! I loved wearing this combo! And OF COURSE, I felt compelled to wear red lipstick with my red cotton jacket!

It was a bit cooler this summer work day, so the cotton jacket worked as a light layer, for outside breezes and for inside air-conditioning. But the outfit worked without the jacket, too, for a casual work combo.

Also, there’s a bonus outtake below, enjoy!

Red + grey + black work casual | Never Forget tee in grey

I mentioned in my most recent monthly budget post that I had snagged another tee with the “Never Forget” card catalog design. Y’all know that I wore it immediately to work, right? 😉 I wore it for a summer work casual look on a day with cooler temps. (Hence my light cotton jacket, which I actually work all day, because the A/C in the library was on high.)

If you’re wondering, “Uhhhh, what makes this outfit work-appropriate?,” it comes down to the black ankle pants for me. And a library card catalog tee will ALWAYS be work-appropriate if you work in a library. 😉

Admittedly, I work in a VERY casual work environment, so this level of casual might not fly at your workplace. But to me, the ankle pants — which could very easily be black jeans for a regular casual outfit — tip it into the business side of things, while the tee and canvas flats (and the earrings, honestly) make it more casual. I could have also gone with black flats, which would have made it dressier, but I saw an opportunity to add a pattern, and I took it. #NoRegrets

I have been feelin’ the red lately, haven’t I? Red is also on trend this summer, so perhaps I’ve also been subconsciously soaking up the trend. Whatever the case, red is always classic.

And last but not least, a fun outtake! This one came about because I asked Sam if you could see my silver earrings, and he said that he couldn’t. So here y’all go, readers. Enjoy the earrings — and the red pout! 😉

Remixing my Wonder Woman tee at a local comicon

Thanks in advance for voting for your favorite outfit of mine from last month! 🙂

I am combining two new items in this month, showcasing my equal love for Audrey Hepburn (my hoop earrings, an early birthday present from my mom) AND Wonder Woman (my new tee). Just put your hands together…

The first time you saw me wearing my new Wonder Woman tee, I wore it with red ankle pants. I kept to the red theme, but this time, I remixed the tee by layering it over my red-and-gold cotton dress. (You can see the dress in its entirety here.)

I wore this Wonder Woman-inspired outfit to Tacoma Public Library’s annual Atomic Comicon. OF COURSE I had to pose with the new Wonder Woman herself! I also enjoyed the Lego display, with Wonder Woman leading the Justice League, as seen below. 😀

And at the button-making table, I was inspired to make my own Wonder Woman button, which I added to my tote bag.

And how perfect are my new hoop earrings with this outfit? They perfectly echo the circular Wonder Woman logo on my tee. And I’m just loving the metallics in general with this outfit, from my earrings to the tee to the gold lotus blossom print on my dress to my criss-cross sandals.

Day-to-night holiday casual | Wearing scarves for 4th of July

Happy 4th of July to my American readers!

When my new red and navy blanket scarf c/o JustFashionNow arrived last week — in time for our Independence Day celebrations and detailed in last week’s monthly budget adventures post — I had the idea of doing a scarf inspiration post for the holiday.

Up here in the PNW, the temps tend to drop overnight, so it can get quite cool in the evenings. So I’m doing a day-to-night type of post with two different kinds of scarves, a square scarf and a blanket scarf.

For day:

First up, wearing a smaller, lighter scarf for the daytime.

I decided to wear my vintage, polka-dotted red-white-and-blue square scarf around my neck, but there are lots of other ways to wear a square scarf if it’s just too hot where you live to put anything around your neck.

You could also tie a scarf:

  • around a hat
  • around your hair
  • looped around a purse or bag handles
  • around your wrist for a funky take on a bracelet
  • around your waist as a belt, if the scarf is long enough
  • looped around a belt loop on jeans or shorts, if your scarf is shorter

You can also visit a prior post I did illustrating different ways to wear square scarves.

And if it’s hotter where you live, you could totally go with a plain white tank or tee and/or denim shorts. The foundation of my outfit is just a simple pair of jeans and a white top, with the accessories bringing a patriotic flavor to the look.

Details:

For night:

As I said before, it can get quite chilly on summer evenings up here — which I love about the PNW! — so taking a blanket scarf with you if you plan staying out at night to watch fireworks or hang out with loved ones — is a practical thing. And why not infuse your practicality with a fun pattern? Particularly with a double-sided blanket scarf! 😀

Here’s the darker blue side of my new blanket scarf:

And the lighter blue side of the scarf:

Now for a closeup of the graphic pattern on the blanket scarf:

And Sam managed to catch a couple of awesome action shots while I was flipping the ends of the scarf around my shoulders. It’s like twirling for scarves! 😀

For all my readers, hope your Tuesday in general is going great! ♥
