SIA interpretation: Native American Powder Horn with Wampum Shoulder Belt

A quick note that the poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit from last month — thanks in advance!

It’s time for my interpretation for this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, and I chose this Penobscot Indian powder horn, ca. 1779–80, with wampum shoulder belt, ca. early 19th century. This horn is part of The Met’s public domain art collection.

Inspiration:

You can see more images of another similar Penobscot Indian horn here on The Met’s site, and you can read more about the Penobscot Tribal Nation here.

Interpretation:

The color scheme of the inspiration piece is quite muted, with brown, black, tan, and tiny bits of red in some of the carvings, but lots of texture with the beading and carvings. I started with accessories, including my textured espadrille flats, which fit the color scheme and the feel of the carvings. I then thought of my red-and-white shell earrings, to pull in the bits of red in the carvings, plus add more texture. Next came my black sun hat — which has a bendable rim — because of the leather-and-wood detail around the crown and the ribbing that reminded me of the Wampum shoulder belt. (You will see details of all these accessories in photos below as you scroll through the post.)

How to pull all these different pieces together? A classic black dress, of course!

We took photos in our backyard, against the back side of our sienna red fence. I thought the red tied in with the red bits in the carvings (and my earrings and lipstick), and the black iron bits on the back of the fence added yet more texture to the photos.

The last thing I added to my outfit was my cognac tie belt. But instead of leaving it hanging down, I tied it into a bow and moved the bow to the back.

Everyone is encouraged to participate — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also welcome — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator, me, at librarianforlifestyle@gmail.com by this Tuesday, July 17th. I will then post the SIA round-up on my blog this Wednesday, July 18th.

Work day to date night | Sequin tank + colored jeans

I have worn two slight variations of this outfit lately, so I figured it’s time to feature it on the blog! I figure, why NOT do sequins to brighten up one’s work day — and it’s a great way to go from work day to date night! 😀

After I took pics, I realized this outfit is quite similar to a casual holiday party outfit I wore years ago. Both outfits are a combo of a grey cardigan + silver sequin tank top + red pants + pewter flats + silver jewelry. It’s the same grey cardigan in both outfits, but there ARE differences:

  • different sequin tank tops (this grey-and-silver tank top feels more casual with its monochromatic stripes)
  • different red bottoms (this time red jeans instead of red ankle pants)
  • different pewter flats
  • different short hairdo (I had the “wet look” in the earlier post)
  • different jewelry (silver bar earrings instead of sparkly hoops in the earlier post)

But even with all those (admittedly subtle) differences, it’s obvious that I like what I like, and I stick with what I like and what works for me. I’m ok with that. 😉

And a note about my favorite red lipstick, the L’Oreal Infallible Le Rouge 10-hour lipstick in “Refined Ruby” — they’ve apparently discontinued that specific shade of red! They’re still selling the Infallible Le Rouge 10-hour lipstick line — I also have the same lipstick in “Everlasting Plum,” last seen here, and it really does last, y’all! — so I hustled down to my local Walgreens and stocked up on my very favorite red lipstick.

After I stocked up, I felt like this:

Red, white, and blue | Casual work outfit inspiration

Happy Independence Day to my fellow Americans, here and abroad, and to all immigrants throughout our country’s past, present, and future. Together, we make this country better. ♥

I am no stranger to wearing red, white, and blue all year long, not just for Fourth of July. You can see that here different ways I have remixed red + white + blue for every season. It definitely does not take a national holiday to get me to wear this classic color combination!

I was recently inspired by this recent cover and photo shoot Zoe Saldana did for the May issue of Cosmopolitan UK magazine. I was particularly inspired by Zoe’s striped obi-style belt. If you’re a longtime reader (thank you!), then you’ll know that I have a few striped obi-style belts I’ve made out of ties, and the one I selected is the one I made a how-to DIY post for.

You can’t see it very well in these photos (it was more obvious in real life, I assure you), but I wore a red sports bra underneath my light blue striped button-front shirt, which you can see a peek of in the close-up illustration below. I had red running through the entire outfit, from my lipstick to the red under-layer and down to the red ankle pants.

You can see the mini-stripes of my button-front shirt better in the photo below. So I was technically pattern-mixing in this outfit, as well, although it’s super subtle. But I’ll take pattern-mixing whenever I can! 😉

Stripes + polka dots in red, white, and blue

It feels like perfect timing to showcase a red, white + blue outfit as we head into Memorial Day weekend.

I have pinned several outfits similar to this red, white + blue stripes + polka dots combo, like this recent outfit of Victoria Beckham’s, or this casual outfit worn by Duchess Kate last year, or this stripes + scarf outfit from Sarah’s Real Life. Classic is as classic does, y’all.

And y’all know I had no problem color-coordinating my (red) lipstick and (blue) earrings to my outfit, right? 😉

Also, this square scarf just keeps on truckin’ — it’s a scarf that I’ve literally had my entire life. I used to dress my dolls up in this scarf. Love comes in all forms, including scarves. ♥

Simple + neutral with a red crossbody bag

I loved this outfit so much — and the photo location! — that this is a warning that this post is more photo-laden than usual.

The backdrop was a total accident, albeit a happy one. It’s a branch-covered wall by a public parking space in downtown Tacoma. While we were out and about a few weeks ago (yes, it took a while to get this outfit up on the blog), we parked in this parking lot for the first time. As we got out of the car, I saw the wall and went, “Huh. That might be a good place to take pictures.” And it was! I didn’t realize how good this backdrop would be until Sam kept saying, “Wow!” while he taking photos, about how dynamic the branches looked in photos.

But now about the outfit! It’s SO SIMPLE yet low-key dynamic on its own, I suppose. I paired a basic white cardigan with black skinny jeans and a tan coat. I then decided to make myself feel a bit more pepped-up with red lipstick… which led to the red crossbody bag. And the gold trim on the red crossbody bag led me to my classic gold hoop earrings (reproductions of Audrey Hepburn’s own earrings in Sabrina, a birthday gift last year).

Classic, simple pieces that just work. Every. Single. Time.

Librarian for Life + Style | Closeup of textured slip-on flats

These textured espadrille slip-ons were the last things I grabbed. I could have easily gone for my classic black ballet flats, or my leopard print flats, or even my striped slip-on sneakers, which would all have looked just fine. But I chose these espadrille slip-ons because the colors, tan and black, just seemed to tie the color-blocked nature of my outfit together. And they felt a bit unexpected amidst all the classic pieces. It just worked for me! 🙂

I had to darken the photo above a bit to get a better look at these gold hoop earrings, which are actually clip-ons. Being such a classic design, these earrings are a fun and easy way to add some easy glamor to an everyday kind of outfit.
