Pattern-mixing grey leopard + houndstooth with blue + black

I recently wore this outfit to work, a day that included hosting a regional librarians’ meeting. I wanted to make sure I looked professional, but to also stay true to my own style. And y’all know I love to pattern-mix! I loved how the grey tones in the houndstooth tights and leopard infinity scarf linked the two patterns together.

The backdrop is the Metro Parks Tacoma Headquarters building, which has beautiful architecture and greenery and little nooks. We will definitely be back here to take more photos!

And while we were taking photos, I spied a beautiful painted Tacoma rock admist the leaves and branches! It really blends in, doesn’t it?! #TacomaRocks

The pattern on these houndstooth tights is quite subtle, as it reads like a light grey from afar. It’s only when you get close up do you realize it’s houndstooth! I am enjoying my black ankle boots again, as I had the heel tips replaced by a local shoe cobbler. 😀

SIA interpretation: Melody (Musica)

It’s time for my interpretation of the most recent Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge.

Inspiration:

For the challenge, Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey chose the 1895/1897 painting “Melody (Musica)” by English painter Kate Bunce (1856–1927). Bunce was associated with the Arts and Crafts movement, but she was also influenced by the pre-Raphaelites, and you can see both styles in the painting.

Interpretation:

I knew I had to incorporate a floral pattern into my SIA outfit, since the floral pattern is so central to the inspiration painting. But I first thought of a different floral dress, the cotton floral dress seen here, and I was considering layering it under a red cardigan. But that combo felt a little uninspiring to me. And on the morning I planned to wear that original outfit, I spied my floral shirtdress, and the lightbulb in my brain went off. I’ve worn this shirtdress as a tunic over leggings before, as a zipped-up jacket over jeans , as well as a long cardigan over ankle pants. Remixing this shirtdress over another dress this time felt fresh and fun to me.

The woman in the painting is wearing ornate gold jewelry, so all of my jewelry is also gold, including a gold-and-crystal necklace, a gold circle ring, a gold-and-onyx sculptural ring, and a gold floral bracelet. The gold circle ring also ties into the circular mirror on the wall behind the woman in the painting. And finally, I doubled up on the floral with my cloisonné earrings. I quite liked the combination of a dark floral pattern paired with a light floral pattern. (You can click on each photo below to enlarge them.)

Although the floral pattern of this shirtdress feels quite springlike to me — and you may recall that I have this SAME floral pattern in a peplum vest! — I felt like it transitioned nicely into autumn when paired with the red dress and black tights.

And a note about my flats — they’re new! My old black ballet flats had finally given up the ghost (they started cracking on the sides), so it was time to replace them. These new round-toe flats are equally as comfy as my old flats, and the quilted sides and patent leather cap toes add some unexpected texture-mixing to the classic shape. You’ll be seeing more of them, I promise!

There’s still time to participate in SIA, and here’s how:

Everyone is welcome to participate — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also welcome — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator, Salazar, at 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by this Tuesday, October 23rd. Salazar will then post the SIA round-up on her blog, 14 Shades of Grey, this Wednesday, October 24th.

Can’t wait to see what we all are inspired to come up with in the round-up on Wednesday!

Black jacket + red gingham

This is an outfit I wore during an in-service day, a day that the weather finally started to break toward fall. Which meant LAYERS! 😀

I layered my black canvas moto-style jacket over a buttoned-up gingham shirt and trouser jeans. This combo felt professional yet also a bit casual, which feels like my sweet spot for work wear.

I thought it would be fun to mix feminine and masculine details. The moto-style jacket is all hard angles, which feels a bit masculine, as does the shirt that I buttoned all the way up (I didn’t want the shirt collar to fight with the jacket collar). The feminine details boils down to my retro-style silver hoop earrings, classic red lipstick, and the fun striped dress charm on my structured tote bag.

And I thought it would be a bit cheeky to wear trousers to contrast with the dress charm! 😉

I was originally planning on wearing my classic black ballet flats, but at the last minute, I thought wearing my snakeskin flats with the red patent leather cap toe would be fun. It added one more pattern to my outfit — pattern-mixing, yessssss!!!! — plus it carried the color of red all throughout my outfit. And I got compliments from colleagues on these shoes all day long! Plus, it was fun to see my colleagues’ reactions when I told them I had scored these at the first estate sale I went to, which I detailed last year in this post. 😀

Cat wings | Dressing up a cat tee for work with a midi skirt

This is my final summer work look (although I’ve been on summer break for a few weeks; my 3-day-a-week posting schedule can delay outfit postings), although it could TOTALLY work for a fall work outfit for those, like me, who are still experiencing hotter temps.

So it still feels like good timing for this outfit, which for me has ALL THE THINGS:  cats, more cats, a midi skirt, pattern-mixing, comfy tee, statement earrings, red lipstick, and a public art mural backdrop.

That’s right, I’m doubling down on the cats! #noregrets

And I had to choose WHICH cat tote to pair with my cat tee, because I have more than one cat-print tote bag. I am that kind of cat lady, yes I am. Again, #noregrets. I chose my multi-cat tote bag over my bolder “Meow!” cat tote, as seen here, because I wanted my Jason Wu for Target cat tee to take center stage.

Ahhhh, red lipstick and retro-style silver hoop earrings. Classic. And my silver metallic nail polish matching my earrings? Hello, my name is Jen, and I love to color-coordinate. 😉

The backdrop is one of wings in a Native American art style. It’s actually one pair of wings in a trio of wing murals, and I’ve been wanting to take photos here for awhile. I particularly like this pair of wings, because of the bold lines and color combo!

Summer work casual | Grey tunic with pops of red

A quick note that the poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from last month — thanks in advance!

I played with proportions and pops of color for today’s summer casual work outfit. I layered my grey tunic over red ankle pants, and I added more pops of red with the red floral ribbon belt I made this past year, a red patterned tote bag, and a red charm on my silver charm necklace.

Below is a closeup of the double-sided fabric belt I made this past year. One side is a red floral ribbon; the other side is a red and green plaid. For a more casual feel, I just looped the ends over to hang down.

Below is another closeup of the red ribbon side of the fabric belt, along with my silver charm necklace. I could have worn any number of earrings in my jewelry collection with this outfit, but in the end, I went with my silver + peridot small hoops, to bring out the green in the floral ribbon print.
