Simple + neutral with a red crossbody bag

I loved this outfit so much — and the photo location! — that this is a warning that this post is more photo-laden than usual.

The backdrop was a total accident, albeit a happy one. It’s a branch-covered wall by a public parking space in downtown Tacoma. While we were out and about a few weeks ago (yes, it took a while to get this outfit up on the blog), we parked in this parking lot for the first time. As we got out of the car, I saw the wall and went, “Huh. That might be a good place to take pictures.” And it was! I didn’t realize how good this backdrop would be until Sam kept saying, “Wow!” while he taking photos, about how dynamic the branches looked in photos.

But now about the outfit! It’s SO SIMPLE yet low-key dynamic on its own, I suppose. I paired a basic white cardigan with black skinny jeans and a tan coat. I then decided to make myself feel a bit more pepped-up with red lipstick… which led to the red crossbody bag. And the gold trim on the red crossbody bag led me to my classic gold hoop earrings (reproductions of Audrey Hepburn’s own earrings in Sabrina, a birthday gift last year).

Classic, simple pieces that just work. Every. Single. Time.

These textured espadrille slip-ons were the last things I grabbed. I could have easily gone for my classic black ballet flats, or my leopard print flats, or even my striped slip-on sneakers, which would all have looked just fine. But I chose these espadrille slip-ons because the colors, tan and black, just seemed to tie the color-blocked nature of my outfit together. And they felt a bit unexpected amidst all the classic pieces. It just worked for me! 🙂

I had to darken the photo above a bit to get a better look at these gold hoop earrings, which are actually clip-ons. Being such a classic design, these earrings are a fun and easy way to add some easy glamor to an everyday kind of outfit.

What we wore to the Oscars | Viewing party + style recap

My friend Christina has the best ideas! She’s the one who invited me to the “cars & couture” local fashion show last summer, and it was her idea to get tickets to the annual local Oscars viewing party, hosted by The Grand Cinema. I am a lifelong Oscars nerd fan, so she did not have to twist my arm to say yes — and then it turned out to be a really fun and unique “double date” when our significant others agreed to come along.

Festive attire dress code

The dress code, as explained on the event’s website, suggested “festive attire.” I had no idea what that meant, so y’all know I looked that up, right? Librarian skillz. 😉 Turns out, “festive attire” is basically like “cocktail attire” but with more sparkle and sequins.

This was a great opportunity for Sam to bust out his formal kilt attire, because YES. And he went full formal, with his tux shirt and buttons and bow tie and fancy, faux-fur sporran. I love love love when Sam gets to wear his formal kilt, because (a) he looks so handsome, (b) the Fraser red tartan is very striking, and (c) he looks so handsome.

And because Sam would be wearing the Fraser red tartan, I knew I would need to incorporate that into my own ensemble. I had two options in my closet that would coordinate with the red tartan:  my navy satin-and-chiffon halter dress, seen here, and my purple retro-style dress with the sweetheart neckline, first seen here. Either dress would have been fine, but I decided on my purple cocktail dress as it provided a bit more coverage, and it’s still winter. Practicality, y’all.

Here we are, in our festive finest:

The day before the Oscars viewing party, my friend Christina scored a black velvet wrap dress, seen below. A great find, so classic and flattering! I also loved that she added fun patterns with her clutch and heels. She also convinced her sweetie, Bismark, to incorporate patterns, through his checked button-front and socks. (Sadly, I forgot to get a picture of his socks!).

Don’t they look so dapper? ♥ And if Bismark’s name sounds familiar, it’s because he’s the tattoo artist who painted the inspiration artwork that I chose for the first Style Imitating Art challenge of the year!

For fun, as well as to honor Bismark, I added his pin to my clutch. (You can also see a closeup of this pin on my Instagram.) I also added a Jamie Fraser Outlander pin to my clutch, to honor my own Fraser. This pin — which some of you may also have seen earlier this year on my Instagram! — was a Christmas gift from friends in Portland. I also added a Wonder Woman pin, because the movie should have been nominated for multiple Academy Awards this year but was shut out. (Other than Wonder Woman not getting nominated, I was pretty happy with the rest of the nominations. And I was pretty pleased with the eventual winners, too.)

Below is a photo of my other accessories and jewelry. I first added the circular brooch that my husband’s Scottish great-aunt gifted me when we visited her and Sam’s cousins years ago during our trip to Scotland (see this post for more pics during that trip). To coordinate with the black pearls in that brooch, I added two bracelets with black pearls, as well as my headband that looks like it’s made of miniature black pearls. I added more sparkle with my crystal drop earrings, as well as the vintage, Art Deco-inspired brooch from my paternal grandmother.

I used the circular brooch to secure one end of the sash, as you can see above, and I used the Art Deco brooch to secure the top part of the sash on my shoulder, as you can see below.

When I was double-checking to see which shoulder to drape the sash over — wearing it over the right shoulder signifies you are married to a clansman, whereas wearing it over the left shoulder signifies you are married to the clan chieftain — I saw a tutorial for an easy way to do a rosette at the end of the sash. I ended up doing a half-rosette, and I really loved how it finished off one end of the sash. The other end I left hanging down the back.

The viewing party was really well-organized! Everyone got awards booklets, as well as a special, complimentary cookie. There was a private viewing room for VIPs, but we opted for the general admission seats — and I am glad to report that the theatre seats were very cushy and comfortable! When you know the telecast will last 4+ hours, that’s a very important detail! 😉

During the commercial breaks, the emcees held raffle drawings and even a costume contest! I forgot to get photos of the costume contest, but you can see more photos from the event here and here on the Grand Cinema’s Facebook site.

They also had a fun photo booth downstairs, which was open during the entire telecast. They had all sorts of props to play with, including a miniature Oscar statuette, feather boas, masks, and more. Sam and I opted for black-and-white photos for our turn — we had fun with the Oscars statuette, because OF COURSE — and we went for full color for a group photo booth souvenir. I loved how these turned out!

Finally, some selfies to wrap up the night!

White Christmas style inspiration, take 1

It’s long past Christmas, I know, but the classic 1954 musical White Christmas can be enjoyed all year long… especially the fashion! And I’m not the only one who loves the costumes in this classic. Here’s a video that shines a spotlight on the fabulous style of White Christmas:

As I recently rewatched the musical (and sang along with every song, of course), I realized that I could recreate several of the outfits I loved seeing onscreen. So I thought it would be fun to do a mini-series of White Christmas style inspiration this week.

First up, Rosemary Clooney’s fabulous — and totally work-appropriate! — combo of a yellow tailored blouse and black pencil skirt. Simple, chic, classic.

Here’s my take:

My recreation of the this outfit was super easy. Instead of a button-front shirt in yellow, I substituted my yellow starburst-print cardigan. I layered the yellow cardigan over a long-sleeved black tee and pushed the sleeves up a bit. I tucked the shirts into my black pencil skirt, and there you have it!

I kept the rest of the outfit very simple, too, just black hose, black patent leather pumps, and a black tote bag. And of course, red lipstick felt like the perfect finishing touch.

Of course, I also managed to inject my own bit of quirk into my inspired ensemble, through my dark purple nail polish (which reads as black from afar). Just a touch of modern individualism amidst the 1950s-inspired style. 😉

Valentine’s Day casual in red + black + snakeskin

Happy Valentine’s Day!

This casual outfit, in black with pops of red and silver, feels appropriate for Valentine’s Day. It’s the accessories that jazz up what is otherwise a very simple combo.

This is a closeup of my new turtleneck cable sweater from Lands’ End — I love that the cable knit is a bit thinner than other styles.

These sets of photos also demonstrate how tricky the light can be during the winter. The pics above are a bit blown-out, which makes it easier to notice the details of my outfit, but it also makes my umbrella look like it’s floating in air because the white panels totally disappear into the background. The pics below are more saturated, and this is honestly how these photos came out — they appear darker just because of the angle in which my husband held my camera phone! Librarian for Life + Style | Black cable sweater + silver hoop earrings + red lipstick

And while I was putting this post together, I thought that it would be fun to try a couple of photos in black and white, which you can see below. This outfit, while simple, also feels pretty classic — appropriate when wearing these earrings, which are reproductions of the ones Audrey Hepburn wore in the film Sabrina. A classic love story — also appropriate for Valentine’s Day! ♥

Burgundy + grey + animal print, winter style inspiration

Today’s outfit was inspired by this outfit that I pinned from Lands’ End. The moment I saw the outfit online, I was reminded of similar items already in my closet, including a burgundy coat, grey dress, cognac tall boots, and leopard accessories.

If you’re a longtime reader (thank you!), then you know that I never worry about exact interpretations, so it didn’t bother me in the least that my burgundy coat is longer or that I substituted the leopard tote bag in the inspiration photo for a leopard print scarf instead.

I added extra tweaks of my own, of course, including adding grey patterned boot socks and my new tote bag in multiple neutral shades.

The background in these photos is the side of a local public library branch, and I thought the light orange color would set off my winter layers. And of course, a dark burgundy lip color coordinated well with my overcoat! I do love me some color-coordination! 😀
