Remixing a striped dress with rain boots

A quick note that the poll is about to close for you to vote for your favorite outfit from last month — thanks in advance for voting!

Today’s outfit was inspired by two things: ¬†(a) the rainy weather, and (b) wanting to remix this striped dress, which you’ve seen before here and here.

Bonus pattern-mixing provided by my Pride & Prejudice-print scarf (a recent birthday gift from my friend Stephanie). The scarf was a last-minute addition — it was chilly in the morning! — but I thought it paired nicely with my navy-and-berry striped dress. My navy boot socks also provided a bit more texture to the overall outfit.

I also wore my new put-a-bird-on-it resin earrings, which you also saw earlier this week! And the pink stripe on the back of my rain boots tied in with the berry color of my dress… yes, the details in this outfit made me smile inside all day. ūüėÄ

Navy + pink stripes for springtime

Two quick reminders:

I have worn my new navy- and pink-striped tee a few times already, but it hasn’t yet made it to the blog… until now! The pink and navy color combo feels so fresh for spring, and we’re finally seeing some blooms around here. Of course, it’s still off-and-on rainy (more “on” than “off”), so the rain boots are still a necessity.

I wore this on the weekend running errands, and it’s a good casual example of my personal style:

  • Comfy = Yep! Skinny jeans and a tee are always comfortable in my book
  • Classic = You can’t get more classic than a striped tee and a trench coat!
  • Touch of whimsy = The bits of whimsy for me come down to the pops of pink, especially in the unexpected pink trim on the rain boots, and in the daisy floral trim in the trench coat.

We took a break while running errands around town to enjoy a stroll around Wright Park, which is one of the oldest, and loveliest, parks in the city. They have trees of all different kinds, and placards on each so I always learn something new each time we visit. And OF COURSE I got excited when we came across an old cherry blossom tree, this one blooming with buds of white.

And at the end of our quick photo shoot, Sam spied a brightly painted rock around one of the trees. It turns out there’s a community art project called “Tacoma Rocks,” in which locals paint rocks and place them all around the city. Why? In order to spread happiness. The founder of the Tacoma Rocks group stated in a local interview that, “We spread smiles one rock at a time.” How awesome is that?!

The rock that Sam found spreads a great message, that “Different is cool!”¬†‚ô•¬†‚ô•¬†‚ô• I had to share this sweet story and awesome message!

Remixing my pink sweater with cargo vests | Pink + burgundy

One last reminder that poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from November. Thanks in advance!

It might go without saying that I loooooooove my new burgundy cargo vest, but it doesn’t hurt to visually demonstrate that on the blog, right? ūüėČ

I was inspired to pair my burgundy cargo vest with my pink sweater after seeing again the post when I paired this pink sweater with my olive cargo vest, back in 2013. That remains one of my favorite outfits, so I reimagined it for this fall season. Remixing = real life.

And true to my color-coordinated spirit, I wore my rain boots because (a) the pink bits on the back of the boots matched my pink sweater, and (b) it was a rainy day. I am also very practical! ūüėČ

Navy stripes + green accents | What I wore to the zoo

A quick reminder that there is ONE DAY LEFT to enter the “Wear to Where?” blog tour GIVEAWAY! ūüėÄ

On a rare day off together, Sam and I decided to visit the zoo (we’re members of the Oregon Zoo here in Portland). For a casual day out, I put together a simple variation of an outfit I’ve worn before, as seen here. Before, I paired navy stripes with bright pink accents; today, it’s green accents.

Obviously, I like the look of a monochromatic base topped with colorful scarves.

The green accents started with a new scarf my husband got for me from a recent writing conference. It’s a soft green color, and the text on the scarf is from one of my favorite books,¬†Anne of Green Gables! ūüėÄ I then added my peridot-and-silver earrings, courtesy of Anjolee Jewelry (see review here), and the peridot set off my scarf perfectly!

And below you can see the colorful pink accents on the back of my navy Hunter rain boots! The rain boots were a good choice, as it was off-and-on rainy that day, along with puddles left over from the day before.

We took these photos at the zoo, by where the lions are (my favorites, ’cause I’m a Leo!). I’ve had multiple posts about what I wore to the zoo — it’s one of our favorite destinations for a casual day out together — which you can see here, here, and¬†here.

My go-to boots for winter

Boots are definitely winter shoe staples in my wardrobe. In recent years, I have added several pairs of boots to my wardrobe, including two pairs of flat-heeled boots as well as rain boots — must-haves for Portland weather! (Note: ¬†I realize that I have no need for really heavy-duty winter boots. This post is about my own personal go-to boots for winter, so you won’t see any heavy-duty winter boots, which may be must-haves for those of you who live in snowy temps. Hope y’all keep warm this winter!)

My go-to boots for winter include ankle booties, tall boots, flat-heeled riding boots, and rain boots. Here are some cute options I’ve come across recently. (Especially love the brown combo version of my Marc Fisher boots, as featured¬†below. If only they’d come out with a grey leather version…)

Below are collages showcasing winter outfits I’ve worn with each kind of boot in my wardrobe.

Rain boots

I no longer have my first pair of rain boots, a cool black-and-tweed pair seen below. (The soles cracked a little over a year of use.) My first pair of Hunter rain boots (almost exact version here) have been in steady use for two years now of winter and rainy spring weather.

Riding boots

I purchased two pairs of flat-heeled riding boots in fall 2013, one pair in black and the other in cognac (almost exact versions here online). A not-insignificant purchase, but one that has paid back several times over since. Their cost-per-wear ratio has to be one of the lowest in my current wardrobe!

Tall heeled boots

My first pair of tall heeled boots came when I lived in Wisconsin, where I purchased these black and brown pairs. The heeled boots are not as practical as my flat-heeled pairs, but I still like the look of them, especially when I feel I need extra height.

Ankle booties

I purchased my first pair of ankle booties, also called “shoeties,” two winters ago. Again, the Portland (and style blog?) influence. I tried out the trend with this Payless pair (similar pair here), and they’re still going strong!

Linking up with these lovely ladies!
