Black jacket + red gingham

This is an outfit I wore during an in-service day, a day that the weather finally started to break toward fall. Which meant LAYERS! 😀

I layered my black canvas moto-style jacket over a buttoned-up gingham shirt and trouser jeans. This combo felt professional yet also a bit casual, which feels like my sweet spot for work wear.

I thought it would be fun to mix feminine and masculine details. The moto-style jacket is all hard angles, which feels a bit masculine, as does the shirt that I buttoned all the way up (I didn’t want the shirt collar to fight with the jacket collar). The feminine details boils down to my retro-style silver hoop earrings, classic red lipstick, and the fun striped dress charm on my structured tote bag.

And I thought it would be a bit cheeky to wear trousers to contrast with the dress charm! 😉

I was originally planning on wearing my classic black ballet flats, but at the last minute, I thought wearing my snakeskin flats with the red patent leather cap toe would be fun. It added one more pattern to my outfit — pattern-mixing, yessssss!!!! — plus it carried the color of red all throughout my outfit. And I got compliments from colleagues on these shoes all day long! Plus, it was fun to see my colleagues’ reactions when I told them I had scored these at the first estate sale I went to, which I detailed last year in this post. 😀

Red + grey + black casual fall outfit

I did not originally plan to take photos of today’s outfit, an outfit I wore on the weekend out to an afternoon movie date with my husband. I wore leggings and the tunic for comfort, and I threw on this belt to help shape the waist as this tunic is quite voluminous. I then added this lightweight red cotton jacket as it was chilly and drizzly — and because I always get cold in movie theaters!

We ended up taking photos because as we were walking out of the movie, Sam said he thought I looked cute, and then I spied this interesting bit of red canopy railing outside the movie theater. And that was that. 😉

I don’t know if this belt has ever made it to the blog before, but I’ve had it for years. It originally came with a pair of capri shorts, which you have seen before here; I donated the shorts a few years ago, but I kept the belt. I quite like how the chunkiness of the belt and the studded details combine to give a little ’80s flair to this casual outfit.

I bought this red cotton jacket years ago, and it’s turned out to be quite a versatile VIP item in my wardrobe. It’s heavy enough to be a jacket in-between seasonal transitions, and light enough to layer. And I love the special details that elevate this basic piece, details like the curved yoke across the back, the elastic seam in the middle to provide more shape, the ruching in the collar, and the sleeves that can be pinned up.

Cat wings | Dressing up a cat tee for work with a midi skirt

This is my final summer work look (although I’ve been on summer break for a few weeks; my 3-day-a-week posting schedule can delay outfit postings), although it could TOTALLY work for a fall work outfit for those, like me, who are still experiencing hotter temps.

So it still feels like good timing for this outfit, which for me has ALL THE THINGS:  cats, more cats, a midi skirt, pattern-mixing, comfy tee, statement earrings, red lipstick, and a public art mural backdrop.

That’s right, I’m doubling down on the cats! #noregrets

And I had to choose WHICH cat tote to pair with my cat tee, because I have more than one cat-print tote bag. I am that kind of cat lady, yes I am. Again, #noregrets. I chose my multi-cat tote bag over my bolder “Meow!” cat tote, as seen here, because I wanted my Jason Wu for Target cat tee to take center stage.

Ahhhh, red lipstick and retro-style silver hoop earrings. Classic. And my silver metallic nail polish matching my earrings? Hello, my name is Jen, and I love to color-coordinate. 😉

The backdrop is one of wings in a Native American art style. It’s actually one pair of wings in a trio of wing murals, and I’ve been wanting to take photos here for awhile. I particularly like this pair of wings, because of the bold lines and color combo!

Making a floral maxidress more casual with a chambray shirt

It’s been awhile since I’ve worn this floaty floral maxi (which you can see on its own here in this post). I have worn this floral maxi a couple of times for fancier occasions, but this time, I decided to make it more casual with a chambray button-front shirt. (And yes, it’s still summer up here in the PNW, and I wore this on a sunny and warm day.)

By the way, we took these photos on our back steps, which had definitely seen better days! Basically right after we took these photos, we worked on replacing those steps — yep, with me and my husband doing all the work — so these photos are the last remnants of what our back steps used to look like! (The new steps are now stained red, like the posts in the railing and our fence.)

This dress is so fun! I love how the overlay with all the flowers is sheer, so it creates interesting depth and shapes when I move. And the v-neck on this dress is deep, so I wore the maxi over a black sports bra, as per my usual clothing layering trick.

What I wore to a local street fair | Dashiki bright + colorful

I got this bright and colorful dashiki a year ago at a local street fair, so it felt like the perfect item to wear to this year’s street fair! Also, a cotton dashiki or tunic is a VERY good idea to wear to any summer festival, as it is loose-fitting and in a breathable fabric.

Also, I have learned that a crossbody bag is the perfect bag for these kinds of festivals, as I don’t have to worry about it as we walk around. Plus, it keeps both my hands free for all the stuff you accumulate at a street fair (flyers, bags, sno cones, etc.). 😉

Because it was hot that day, I wore my wide-brimmed black sunhat, which I thrifted at a local resale shop last summer. Sam said the hat gave me “flair.” 😀

You’ve seen this sun hat before, in an SIA post a few weeks ago, but it looks totally different today paired with this more casual outfit. I love the hat’s bendable rim — and this EXACT sun hat is still available!

I started out the day wearing my black metal hoop earrings, which you’ve seen several times before, like here and here. But during the street fair, I picked up these fabulous circle earrings made out of wood. In fact, I bought these earrings from the same African businesswoman, who is sales director for Kijiji Village Craft, that I bought the dashiki from last year! I loved them so much that I decided to wear them then and there. This summer, I have been all about the lightweight statement earrings!

The vibrant backdrop is a local grocer and convenience store that is painted turquoise with bright pink window trim. I’ve been wanting to take photos against this backdrop for awhile now, so it all turned out perfectly to pair a brightly colored backdrop with a brightly colored tunic! 😀
