Casual Friday Pride

I showcased this new tee in last month’s monthly budget post, and I wore it on a day in which I knew I would be attending an art gallery reception immediately after work. So this is another example of a “day-to-night” outfit for me.

I seriously got SO MANY compliments on this outfit from work colleagues, which I wasn’t expecting. Tacoma Pride!

We took these photos at a little Japanese friendship garden. I’ve been wanting to take photos here for awhile — I’m so glad it worked out this day!

I was also really pleased that I was finally able to get a good photo of these tuxedo-stripe jeans, so you could get a sense of how the black stripe looks against the dark denim, without me having to lighten the photo.

It was a happy accident that I happened to be wearing my “Rockstar” nail polish while wearing my Tacoma Pride tee. This nail polish is bright pink but includes all colors of the rainbow if you look close! 😀

Pencil skirt work casual

If you haven’t already voted, a quick reminder that the poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from last month! 😀

This outfit is quite similar to this outfit that I wore last month:  same color palette of red + grey + black; a grey library-themed tee; the same red cotton jacket + black striped canvas flats. But there’s one major difference — this time, instead of black ankle pants, I wore my stretchy black pencil skirt. This simple swap really changes the whole look for me!

Also, as I frequently like to say, remixing = real life!

Pairing a pencil skirt with sneakers feels so cool and sporty! I loved wearing this combo! And OF COURSE, I felt compelled to wear red lipstick with my red cotton jacket!

It was a bit cooler this summer work day, so the cotton jacket worked as a light layer, for outside breezes and for inside air-conditioning. But the outfit worked without the jacket, too, for a casual work combo.

Also, there’s a bonus outtake below, enjoy!

What I wore to a local fashion show

A friend of mine had two VIP tickets to the 2017 Tacoma Cars & Couture Fashion Show, and I was able to tag along as her “plus one.” 😀 The show took place at LeMay – America’s Car Museum and showcased five couture designers from around the Pacific Northwest:

It was a fantastic show, and last week on my Facebook page, I put together a “Cars and Couture Fashion Show 2017” album of photos from the event, including my favorite designs from the show. So definitely browse that album, screenshot below, if you’d like to see some really cool looks from local designers — whose styles were all so different!

Below is a peek at the program from the show — plus my awesome yellow-and-black heels (4 inches!) and my peekaboo vintage book cover purse. My friend and I decided to put in an effort and bust out the heels for the show. We fit right in! 😉

Below is a look at the whole outfit that I wore to the fashion show. I’ve worn my yellow-and-black heels with a cocktail dress, as seen here; with ankle pants, as seen here; and with black jeans, as seen here. This time, I decided to be a little bit different and pair them with my wide-leg black trousers. I knew we had front-row seats, so that when I sat down, my whole shoe would be visible. 😉

And if that top looks vaguely familiar, but also a little different, that’s because I decided to take the attached front ties on the blouse, as you can see here, and wrap them around my neck to let the ends hang down the back.

But of course, when I took a photo on the balcony off the museum’s main level — a view overlooking downtown Tacoma and the harbor — the scarf ends decided to photo-bomb me! 😀

We took these pics during the intermission — thanks, Christina, for taking photos! — when most of the crowd had retreated to either end, the lobby or the balcony, of the museum’s main level. But there were quite a few style bloggers and Instagrammers there, taking photos of their outfits in front of the cars. I was no exception! So instead of cropping this photo below, I decided to keep it wide so you could see some more of the photo-taking action. (I also looooooved the green-and-black hi-lo top the lady to my left is wearing. I would pair that top with skinny pants or jeans and use every excuse to walk around so the back hem would flare out.) The people-watching at the fashion show was almost as good as the couture itself!

Also, a funny story to share with y’all:  I had a nice chat with one of the show’s sponsors, who happened to be seated next to us. He was very nice (and very stylish), and remarked at one time that it was obvious that I was interested in fashion. He gestured toward my heels as proof, and I grinned in agreement. Toward the end of our chat, he asked what I did for a living. His face fell into TOTAL SHOCK when I revealed to him that I was a librarian. After he picked his jaw up off the floor, he was then delighted to learn that I had a style blog. I definitely felt like I was helping represent my profession in a positive way in that moment — and perhaps expand expectations of a librarian’s sense of style and love of fashion? 😀

Red + grey + black work casual | Never Forget tee in grey

I mentioned in my most recent monthly budget post that I had snagged another tee with the “Never Forget” card catalog design. Y’all know that I wore it immediately to work, right? 😉 I wore it for a summer work casual look on a day with cooler temps. (Hence my light cotton jacket, which I actually work all day, because the A/C in the library was on high.)

If you’re wondering, “Uhhhh, what makes this outfit work-appropriate?,” it comes down to the black ankle pants for me. And a library card catalog tee will ALWAYS be work-appropriate if you work in a library. 😉

Admittedly, I work in a VERY casual work environment, so this level of casual might not fly at your workplace. But to me, the ankle pants — which could very easily be black jeans for a regular casual outfit — tip it into the business side of things, while the tee and canvas flats (and the earrings, honestly) make it more casual. I could have also gone with black flats, which would have made it dressier, but I saw an opportunity to add a pattern, and I took it. #NoRegrets

I have been feelin’ the red lately, haven’t I? Red is also on trend this summer, so perhaps I’ve also been subconsciously soaking up the trend. Whatever the case, red is always classic.

And last but not least, a fun outtake! This one came about because I asked Sam if you could see my silver earrings, and he said that he couldn’t. So here y’all go, readers. Enjoy the earrings — and the red pout! 😉

Silk tunic + vintage earrings

I mentioned in last week’s budget post that my good friend and fellow librarian Stephanie had gifted me these vintage Native American earrings… I did not hesitate to wear them immediately! As in, the day after she gave them to me, and to a brunch outing during our recent girls’ weekend.

I also wore this outfit to work the next week, for a more casual “behind the scenes” day (i.e. no teaching). So instead of a “work to weekend” outfit, this is a “weekend to work” outfit. 🙂

I started with the earrings, and then pulled out this printed silk Anthropologie tunic that I fashion-swapped a few years ago, because I thought the turquoise of the earrings paired well with the teal color in the tunic. I also paired my brown cardigan and brown leggings with the tunic to echo the wood bits in the earrings.

This was a perfect outfit for a brunch, as the looser tunic style and leggings, which have a wide stretchy waistband, meant comfort for eating. I do not sacrifice practicality and comfort for the sake of style!

The backdrop is of a water collection tank outside the Tacoma Dome station, which includes free parking as well as access to the free light rail system that goes into downtown Tacoma. I thought it would make for a fun backdrop, and another way to highlight our city. Y’all know I really like to get outfit photos while we’re out and about, if at all possible, to show how I wear my outfits in real life.
