Wine + flowers | Spring floral

Florals? For spring? In the immortal words of Miranda Priestley, AKA national treasure Meryl Streep: “Groundbreaking.” 😉

Florals for Spring Groundbreaking,” uploaded by humour101channel, Standard YouTube License.

And yet, it is irresistible not to feel the urge to float out your florals after a long, cold, rainy winter, when all the trees and flowers are suddenly bursting with color and life. Like the bright fuchsia azaleas and the Japanese red maple tree bringing color and life to our front yard.

I really didn’t intend to color-coordinate with our tree and flowers. (No, really, Erin, I didn’t! 😉 ) And I actually didn’t realize my wine-colored ankle pants EXACTLY matched our Japanese red maple tree until after I’d downloaded photos. I must just naturally gravitate toward color-coordinating, without even realizing it. I have a color-coordinated subconscious, y’all. (You taught me well, Mom. ♥ )

And I am wearing my new pewter flats! They’re super comfy right out of the box.

Honestly, this entire outfit was super comfy. And I had an earrrrrrrly start to this teaching day, so I needed all the help I could get. This popover style of shirt is always more professional-looking than a tee, but just as comfortable. And ankle pants look more professional than jeans, but again, just as comfortable.

And yes, I used my new Kenra Perfect Medium Spray 13 hairspray, reviewed here — and my hair does look shiny, even at the end of the day! 😀

SIA interpretation: Monmon Cats

Two quick reminders:

SIA inspiration:

Now it’s time for my interpretation for this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, and this round curated by SIA co-founder Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey.

Salazar picked the “weird and wonderful” Monmon Cats (Tattooed Cats) by California-based Japanese artist Kazuaki Horitomo. As a cat lady, she couldn’t pass this up! 😀 As a fellow cat lady, I approve. 😉

Below is a detail from the print. Click the image below to view the full print, or see this print and more from the artist on the Bored Panda site here or on the artist’s site here.

My interpretation:

I went for a combination of greys and blacks with pops of red and a bit of blue, to match the tones of the inspiration artwork. My grey dress and grey-and-black houndstooth tights came first. And then my new black gingham shirt came in the mail just in time, and the final piece clicked into place in my mind… 😀

The belt is actually a piece of embroidered ribbon my husband recently thrifted for me, thinking I could make something out of it. I haven’t had time to make it into a belt — and I think I have enough left over for a headband! — but I thought it was perfect for this week’s SIA challenge, because it brought in the bits of red flowers and blue colors from the inspiration artwork into my outfit. So I just wrapped the ribbon around me and pinned it on the side for a makeshift belt!
I revealed this wardrobe secret to a student worker at my library — the same student worker who was agog at my recent mint-and-navy cardigan and scarf outfit combo — and her reaction was so sweet. (She said she loved how creative I was with what I wore and that she always looked forward to what I would be wearing!) It’s so rare in real life that I have the chance to reveal just how detailed (and nerdy and thought-out) my style choices are. That’s what’s so great about having a style blogging outlet! 😀

I *did* manage to get a cat in my pics, just in a different way with the “Meow” tote bag my mom gifted me this past Christmas. 😀

SIA interpretation: Garden Center roses

SIA inspiration pick:

It’s time for my interpretation for this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, this time chosen by Erin @ Loop Looks. She has posted before on her blog about her friend Annabelle’s job at Garden Center Services, an organization that provides services and job training for adults with physical and intellectual disabilities. One of their programs is called GrowArts, and its goal is to have the adults they serve create art that they then sell. For SIA this week Erin chose one of the pieces they have for sale, a striking painting of roses.

My interpretation:

Librarian for Life + Style | Garden center SIA collage

My very first idea was to wear my green, rose-print scarf. I wanted the focus to be more on the rose print, so I went the green-and-tan color scheme route, rather than pulling focus with a bright red clothing item. (But I did add in a touch of red with the ladybug on my brooch.)

The SIA painting is part of the Garden Center Services project, so I wanted to stick with that theme by taking photos in a local community garden. We took photos in the Dometop Community Garden, which is right beside the Rogers children’s park and overlooks a restored 1907 school building.

Can you tell I was ready for spring?! You might say I was so ready, I was jumping for joy… 😉

I mixed in more florals with my rose earring studs and my floral clutch. More pattern-mixing with multiple kinds of roses! 😀

By the way, this clutch is pretty roomy! I can fit in my wallet, sunglasses case, tissues, chapstick, and my cell phone, with room to spare. PLUS this clutch is pattern-mixing all on its own, with an interior of striped fabric! I also love that the external fabric is a scuba-like material.

Statement scarf + Fabulous Friday co-host link-up

Today, I’m so excited to be co-hosting the Fabulous Friday link-up with Jennie from A Pocketful of Polka Dots, one of my favorite style bloggers! (I’ve been a reader of her blog for a long time — check my Blog Love roll.) Scroll down to the end of this outfit post for all the link-up details!

But first, a bit about my outfit, which is all about the accessories. I layered my black knit sleeveless dress over a black knit tee and black opaque tights in order to have a blank, er, black canvas for my geometric-print scarf and burgundy booties. I felt great in this outfit!

This gorgeous scarf, with its black, burgundy, and bits of gold threading, was a gift from my husband, Sam, when he took a college trip to Turkey. My wine-colored lipstick played off both my scarf and my ankle booties.

And since the print on the scarf is geometric, I also went with my geometric bronze earrings, a gift from my good friend and fellow librarian Stephanie.

What goes into choosing photos for an outfit post? It’s mostly about choosing photos that highlight the outfit or details of the outfit (that’s the point of a style blog, right?!). But sometimes, I choose a photo for a purely arbitrary reason, like because I like the way my hair looks in that particular photo. See examples below. 😉

Weather:  Drizzly and cold

Where:  Work day with meetings and Reference Desk duty

What:

  • Scarf:  From Turkey, decades old
  • Dress:  eShakti, old
  • Turtleneck:  Walmart, super old
  • Booties:  Naturalizer, this past fall
  • Earrings:  Gift from my friend Stephanie
  • Lipstick:  Milani, this winter

Fabulous Friday link-up

And now, time for the Fabulous Friday link-up, hosted by the always fabulous Jennie from A Pocketful of Polka Dots. That’s right — two Jens unite for an ultra-Fabulous Friday! 😀

Fabulous Friday1

A Pocketful of Polka Dots, Fabulous Friday Linky Party

Meet your host for Fabulous Friday, Jennie of A Pocketful of Polka Dots.

∼ Hey y’all, I’m Jennie and I am a 47-year-old frugal fashionista! I am mom to two wonderful (and handsome!) sons and one very spoiled Pomeranian. After spending most of my life in black and boring clothes, I now enjoy trying new trends, am a confessed shoeaholic, believe life is too short for boring hair, and never met a polka dot I didn’t like. I am also an avid photographer, reader of Jane Austen, Paleo/Primal enthusiast, and lover of DIY. You can follow me here ∼

Each week, both Jennie and that week’s co-host choose a personal favorite outfit from last week’s link-up. My favorite this past week was from Cindy, aka PRIIINCESSS from the I Am Priiincesss blog, who looks so fabulous and fresh in her “little white dress.”

SIA interpretation: Sing Street

It’s time for my Style Imitating Art (SIA) interpretation! This week’s inspiration artwork was chosen by SIA co-founder Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey, and she chose the bright and colorful poster for Sing Street, which was one of her favorite movies this past year.

My interpretation

I think this is the first time to feature this infinity scarf I thrifted back in December — and what better way to feature this chevron-print scarf of multiple neon colors than with an ’80s-inspired challenge?! And the background color of this part of the fence matches up almost perfectly with the background color of the movie poster! 😀

Librarian for Life + Style | Collage for my Sing Street SIA interpretation

I wanted the scarf to be the focus of the look, so I paired it with an outfit of neutrals that also fit in with the movie poster.

Yep, I’m wearing denim on denim:  black skinny jeans and a dark-wash denim jacket. But it works because the colors and washes are different — but no ’80s acid wash! And no “Canadian tux” here! 😉

Multi-colored backdrop

The backdrop is a fence that’s been painted in multiple colors. (I believe it’s a fence that encircles a local child’s day care or playground.) I spied the fence a few weeks ago and thought at the time it might make a good backdrop for future photos. Multi-colored scarf, multi-colored fence — and just perfect for the movie poster inspiration! 🙂
