Coral pleats + button-front outfit inspiration

A quick note that the poll is open for you to vote for your favorite outfit from last month — thanks in advance!

The inspiration for my outfit today comes from Sarah Jessica Parker — or rather, a character’s costume she wore on set for “Best Day of My Life.” I pinned her outfit here on my Pinterest account. My version is not a faithful reproduction, but the basics of a blue button-front shirt and a pleated skirt are the same.

I love me some patent leather, which is reflected in my tortoiseshell-print wedges and my animal print belt. I also went for a different kind of animal print with my “put a bird on it” resin earrings! ūüėÄ

The day I wore this, several colleagues — and students! — complimented me about both the pleated skirt and wearing bright colors together. Y’all know that I’m not afraid of wearing bright colors! ūüôā

SIA interpretation: Gerda Wegener

It‚Äôs time for my interpretation of this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, which I curated for this round.

SIA inspiration pick:

I recently watched The Danish Girl on DVD, and it’s based on the 2000 book of the same name and the real-life relationship between Danish artists Gerda Wegener and Einar Wegener, who became Lili Elbe, one of the first-ever documented recipients of sex reassignment surgery. I was really struck by the artwork of Gerda (1886-1940), who was played by Alicia Vikander in the film, who also won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for the role.

Therefore, for this next SIA challenge, I selected a self-portrait of Gerda Wegener, a self-portrait in the Art Deco style. You can also read more about Wegener here and see more of her artwork here.

Most of Gerda Wegener’s artwork seems pretty colorful, but I was drawn to the more muted tones of this self-portrait. Perhaps because the more muted tones seem to suit this transitional period between summer and fall? Perhaps because I was also drawn to the complicated expression on the artist’s face?

I had a few different ideas for outfits inspired by this self-portrait. In the end, I went with a floral pleated skirt in muted tones of bronze and light blue, as the colors were in the inspiration painting, and the pattern played off the couch print she’s sitting on. I layered a light blue cardigan over a teal tank top to add some depth, and my champagne-colored satin flats looked more bronze-y when paired with the skirt.

For accessories, I have multiple pieces of pearl jewelry, so I had some options there (pearls are my favorite gemstone). In the end, I went with my multi-colored pearl necklace as it has the largest-sized pearls (I call it my “gumball pearl necklace”), which paired nicely with my black pearl stud earrings. Finally, I chose my vintage wicker bag because it has a bakelite handle, which is a little nod to the Art Deco period of the painting.

We had planned to take photos at Wright Park, which was near where we had brunch that morning. But as we were walking toward Wright Park, I spied this “Love” cornerstone of a church opposite the park, and I thought that would be a perfect alternative.¬†The Danish Girl is a love story at its core, and the neutral colors of the wall and stone also tied in with the inspiration painting. It just felt right!

Below, a closeup of my multi-colored pearl jewelry — and my sassy pixie haircut! ūüėČ

Pleated skirt? Commence twirling! This skirt is a bit shorter than I remember it being. (I’ve also gained weight around my middle in the last ten years since I bought this skirt, so that’s another reason why this skirt seems to be getting shorter, hah!) I bought this skirt and cardigan together at the same time, but I think this cardigan may have seen its last day… its cost-per-wear is in fractions of pennies by now, so it’s had a good run!

Stripes + pleats + cherry blossoms

In a recent People Style Watch issue, I noted these two outfits featuring pleated skirts, as you can see in the pic below. I thought about how to combine what I liked about the two different looks. So I took the idea of the black striped top from the first outfit and the idea of the coral pleated skirt and animal print flats from the second outfit from GirlWithCurves.com — and created a similarly inspired outfit from pieces I already had in my own closet! ūüôā

I had not originally wanted¬†to wear tights, but it’s still quite chilly here, especially in the mornings. I wore this outfit to present at a state conference hosted right here in Tacoma, and I knew I would be presenting in a large room. Therefore, I wanted to wear something that was eye-catching enough so you could see me even from the back of the room, but still professional looking enough for a conference.

I could have tucked in my shirt, but I kinda liked the more easygoing feel it gave to the outfit when I left it untucked. This striped tee looks more professional than regular tees, due its square-neck detailing and elbow-length sleeves. Plus, it’s more comfortable leaving the top untucked, and it’s important to feel comfortable when you’re presenting! ūüôā

And this new tote bag I got from Target is great! It’s just the right size, and it feels sturdy and looks professional and chic at the same time. LOVE!

We took these photos a couple of weeks ago when the cherry blossoms around town were just starting to come alive. And there are so many different varieties of colors! The pics above were taken in the morning, before my presentation. I found a pink tree with a white variety blooming at its base. I thought the effect was cool.

Below are pics we took in the afternoon after the conference, along “Museum Row” in downtown Tacoma. These beautiful light pink cherry tree blossoms look like nature’s cotton candy, and the pic below is a gorgeous representation of Tacoma in the springtime. You’ve got a view of downtown, the Tacoma Dome, and a bit of Mount Rainier peeking up, and all framed with cherry blossoms. Simply stunning!

Sweater + pleated skirt outfit formula | Black + coral + snakeskin

As I flipping through the November 2016 issue of People StyleWatch, I saw a feature on fall outfit formulas, and one of them was about pairing a pleated midi skirt with a crewneck sweater and ankle strap shoes. ON IT.

Librarian for Life + Style | People StyleWatch pleated midi skirt feature

I paired coral pleated skirt with my black crewneck sweater for a super simple outfit formula. I added a little something extra with my snakeskin, ankle-strap wedges, for that touch of whimsy I like to mix in with my comfy + classic style.

I often tuck in my shirts when I wear this skirt, because I like to emphasize the wide waistband, as seen here and here, but today, it felt more natural to keep the sweater untucked. I think the pleats stood out even more this way!

SIA interpretation: The Chocolate Girl

It’s time for my SIA interpretation!¬†It was¬†Salazar‚Äės turn to curate, and she chose a classic: ¬†The Chocolate Girl, ca. 1743-44, by¬†Swiss artist Jean-√Čtienne Liotard.¬†The muted colors and mix of textures in the painting are lovely.

My starting point was my pleated cotton skirt in shades of bronze, white, and light blue. This skirt hasn’t been on the blog that often, seen here, here, and here, but I’ve had it for years. I added a light denim jacket, plain white tee, and my porcelain Wedgwood pendant necklace.

We’ve taken photos at various places outside our new home, but it felt like good timing to take some photos inside. Plus, my blogger pal Erin at Loop Looks¬†— and SIA co-host! — has asked for some pics inside the house, so we took these photos in our living room. (Our couch is usually in front of this picture window, but we moved it forward for a few¬†pics.)

Above is¬†a closeup of my skirt with its bronze ribbon detailing, plus a closeup of the Wedgwood porcelain pendant that my mom got in England decades ago — it’s so delicate and pretty!

Last week, I mentioned recognizing¬†The Chocolate Girl painting from¬†the cover of¬†Longbourn. So OF COURSE¬†I had to incorporate my copy of the book¬†into the photos, along with a yellow¬†tea cup (a birthday gift from Portland friends) and a porcelain dish for chocolate sweets (from Scotland, a gift from Sam’s great-aunt). The green metal tray is one we picked up years ago in Texas, and¬†it’s usually¬†in the center of our dining table. I thought it was a nice touch to bring it into the photo shoot in order to echo the tray the maid is carrying in the inspiration painting.

Lastly, below are some photos of me on our tufted couch, which is the newest addition to our living room. (It’s hard to find a smaller-scale sofa!) Our cat Ibsen was determined to join in on the photo shoot. (I think he was a little jealous of all the attention Bront√ę got last month in this SIA interpretation post.)

So there is still time to¬†participate in SIA challenges! It‚Äôs easy, and bloggers and non-bloggers are encouraged to join in. All you need to do is take a picture of an outfit inspired by this week‚Äôs art piece ‚ÄĒ flat lays and selfies are just fine, as well ‚ÄĒ and send to this week‚Äôs curator, Salazar @ 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com, by tonight. Salazar will post the round-up tomorrow on her blog, 14 Shades of Grey.
