SIA interpretation: Courthouse ceiling

Time for my interpretation of the most recent Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge!

Inspiration:

Last week, Daenel @ Living Outside the Stacks chose one of her own photographs, one of the ceiling in the Old Courthouse in St. Louis, Missouri, a photograph she took in 2013 during a family trip. You can read more about the Old Courthouse — which is now located in the Gateway Arch National Park! — here and here.

Daenel chose this photograph of because of the soft muted colors and the architectural features.

Interpretation:

The starting points for my SIA-inspired outfit were two items:

  • my Wedgwood Jasperware pendant, which has the soft blue color as well as the architectural feel of the ceiling
  • my geometric-print slip-on sneakers, again due to the geometric feel of the design and the soft, muted color combo of grey, pink, blue, and white

At first, I was thinking of an outfit created around one or the other — and then I realized that I could combine the two! And I added additional patterns to the mix with my berry & navy gingham shirt and striped tote bag. This outfit was super comfy but still professional enough for in-service week before our fall quarter begins.

Above and below are closeups of this beautiful Wedgwood Jasperware pendant necklace, a piece of jewelry my mom got in England decades ago. You’ve seen me wear this necklace before here and here. The chain fell at an awkward length in regards to my dress, so I shortened the chain by tying a rubber elastic around the end. It worked! 🙂 I kept the rest of my jewelry very simple.

SIA interpretation 1: Monkey lithograph

It’s time for my FIRST interpretation for this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, the first inspiration artwork curated by newest SIA co-host Daenel @ Living Outside the Stacks. That’s right, I was so inspired that I wore TWO inspiration outfits; you will see the other one on Wednesday, the same day of the round-up on Daenel’s blog.

The inspiration artwork:

Daenel chose this lithograph, seen below, because she ♥ ♥ ♥ monkeys, and the colors are so springlike. As Daenel herself said, “Since this is my first time curating, I thought I’d go with something fun and colorful, with plenty of room for interpretation.” Click here for more information about the lithograph.

My first interpretation:

My immediate starting point was this dress, which has a double dot print of large and small circles. In my mind, the larger circles could represent the coconuts in the lithograph. Then came the idea of pairing this print dress with a patterned headband or scarf that had a mix of colors from the print. And this headband with its floral and paisley print has all the colors mixed in together! The rest of the outfit came together very easily.

I picked this straw bag because the reddish brown trim fit in with the lithograph colors. And the straw, or raffia, helped tie in my cognac wedges to the rest of the outfit.

For my jewelry, I had lots of options, including several wood pieces of jewelry. I originally thought of wearing my coconut shell earrings and/or necklace, seen here, but ultimately, they pulled too much focus for my liking. But I did in the end choose my petrified wood stud earrings and this reddish stone necklace that my husband bought me years ago in Turkey. The pendant matched the reddish bits in my headband, and OF COURSE y’all know that I then matched my lip color accordingly. 😉

Casual Friday formula | Purple + navy

Yep, another entry in my “Casual Friday” outfit formula of a blazer paired with skinny jeans! (I still have some past outfits from the spring quarter to show, and then I’ll continue with casual work outfits throughout the upcoming summer quarter.) When I saw this combo on Adina’s excellent Blue Collar Red Lipstick style blog (scroll down for the final pic), my eyes and brain lit up. Here’s how my thinking went when I pinned this look on my “Casual Friday ideas” board:

  • Structured blazer in a neutral color? Check.
  • Wine-colored top underneath? Check.
  • Skinny jeans? Check.
  • Animal print flats? Check.
  • Long pendant necklace? Check.

I wore this on a Friday — OF COURSE — a day which included a morning meet-and-greet coffee date with another local librarian, a meeting, another event on campus, and project work behind-the-scenes. Lots of variety on this Friday workday — and this comfy, classic outfit was good to go for all the myriad tasks on my to-do list. 😀

We took these photos after work, and I thought you’d enjoy seeing the outfit “on the move,” so to speak, hence the photos of me jumping, above, and walking, below. The backdrop is a nearby church.

Style pinspiration

When I am feeling uninspired when it comes to dressing for work, I turn to my “Easy work outfits” Pinterest board. And when I came across this look I pinned from Jules in Flats, with her burgundy ankle pants, white top, and grey cardigan, the lightbulb went off in my head. Once again, I thought:  “I can do that!

And so I did. I didn’t worry about being too literal in my outfit. It’s about inspiration, not exact replication. For example, instead of wearing my burgundy ankle pants, I opted instead for my red jeans (which have a bit more coverage around the ankles).

Jewelry details

I tend to prefer silver or white gold jewelry, as I feel it’s more complimentary to my pale skin tone. After dressing, I also realized that every single piece of jewelry I was wearing came from my husband! Sam was only too pleased to take close-ups. 🙂

My wedding ring is white gold, and we designed it in collaboration with a local jewelry designer back in West Texas; it also includes the same diamond from my mom’s original wedding ring. Awwwwww…. ♥ My engagement ring is silver with a white pearl. My husband adapted a ring design from James Avery Jewelry in order to echo a ring of my grandmother’s, and he had it made at the flagship James Avery store and studios in central Texas. My necklace chain and two of the pendants — a silver ring with a scroll design and a heart pendant (which is still available!) — are also from James Avery. The red rose ring pendant is a ring Sam bought me at a farmer’s market in Portland, first seen here, and I added it to the necklace to bring it a pop of color. Finally, the silver circle hoops are a recent Christmas present from Sam.

It’s such a simple outfit — I’ve been saying that a lot lately, haven’t I? — but the bits of red throughout really stand out. The final finishing touch, of course, was red lipstick! 🙂

And finally, here’s a pic of me with the outerwear I wore going to and from work. I wore my black coat, plus a buffalo plaid scarf with colors that played off the rest of the outfit.

SIA interpretation: The Chocolate Girl

It’s time for my SIA interpretation! It was Salazar‘s turn to curate, and she chose a classic:  The Chocolate Girl, ca. 1743-44, by Swiss artist Jean-Étienne Liotard. The muted colors and mix of textures in the painting are lovely.

My starting point was my pleated cotton skirt in shades of bronze, white, and light blue. This skirt hasn’t been on the blog that often, seen here, here, and here, but I’ve had it for years. I added a light denim jacket, plain white tee, and my porcelain Wedgwood pendant necklace.

We’ve taken photos at various places outside our new home, but it felt like good timing to take some photos inside. Plus, my blogger pal Erin at Loop Looks — and SIA co-host! — has asked for some pics inside the house, so we took these photos in our living room. (Our couch is usually in front of this picture window, but we moved it forward for a few pics.)

Above is a closeup of my skirt with its bronze ribbon detailing, plus a closeup of the Wedgwood porcelain pendant that my mom got in England decades ago — it’s so delicate and pretty!

Last week, I mentioned recognizing The Chocolate Girl painting from the cover of Longbourn. So OF COURSE I had to incorporate my copy of the book into the photos, along with a yellow tea cup (a birthday gift from Portland friends) and a porcelain dish for chocolate sweets (from Scotland, a gift from Sam’s great-aunt). The green metal tray is one we picked up years ago in Texas, and it’s usually in the center of our dining table. I thought it was a nice touch to bring it into the photo shoot in order to echo the tray the maid is carrying in the inspiration painting.

Lastly, below are some photos of me on our tufted couch, which is the newest addition to our living room. (It’s hard to find a smaller-scale sofa!) Our cat Ibsen was determined to join in on the photo shoot. (I think he was a little jealous of all the attention Brontë got last month in this SIA interpretation post.)

So there is still time to participate in SIA challenges! It’s easy, and bloggers and non-bloggers are encouraged to join in. All you need to do is take a picture of an outfit inspired by this week’s art piece — flat lays and selfies are just fine, as well — and send to this week’s curator, Salazar @ 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com, by tonight. Salazar will post the round-up tomorrow on her blog, 14 Shades of Grey.
