SIA interpretation: Arrow Collar advertisement

It’s time for my interpretation for this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge!

Inspiration artwork:

It was Salazar‘s turn to curate, and she chose an ad for Arrow shirt collar by J. C. Leyendecker. The male model in the ad is based on his long-time partner, Charles Beach. You can read more about Leyendecker and see more of his artwork here.

Since we’re in the middle of summer, Salazar “wanted to pick a summery piece, and this one — with its white-and-beige color scheme and touches of green, black, and pink — just fits the bill.”

I also appreciated that the ad includes both a man and a woman, so here’s a peek at what my sweetie Sam and I wore for the challenge (psst… you can see Sam’s entire outfit on Wednesday’s round-up on Salazar’s blog):

My interpretation:

And now more details about what I wore… I thought first about wearing my bow blouse tee, seen here, but I wanted to wear a shirt with a collar, since the ad is for the Arrow Collar. So I wore my diamond-print button-front shirt instead, and tied a thin salmon pink scarf into a bow for a “lady tie,” which echoed the pink scarf in the woman’s hair. Neutral khakis and a structured tote finished off the look and tied into the inspiration artwork.

My peep-toe wedges with the black piping were a last-minute addition to the outfit, and I think they ended up making the look! They tie into the color scheme, link all the black accents in my outfit together, and the style could be considered a feminine take on spats. ♥

And finally, a closeup of the diamond-print and shirt collar, as well as the bronze-and-bead earrings. I chose these earrings because they reminded me of little arrows, which tied into the Arrow Collar company! 😀

There’s still time to participate in SIA, and here’s how:

Everyone is welcome to participate — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also welcome — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator, Salazar, at 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by this Tuesday, July 31st. Salazar will then post the SIA round-up on her blog, 14 Shades of Grey, this Wednesday, August 1st.

Can’t wait to see what y’all come up with, and be sure to check out fellow SIA co-host Daenel @ Living Outside the Stacks.

Work casual | Orange scarf + denim peep-toes

I was able to get in one last photo op with cherry blossoms! And I do believe this is the first time this year that y’all get a peek at my toes via my peep-toe wedges. 😉

I broke up all the colorblocking in this outfit with this orange print scarf. And yes, my toenail polish matches my cardigan. Hi, I’m Jen, and I love to color-coordinate. 😉

My library card tote bag was a last-minute addition as I was gathering up my stuff in the morning. I like that it adds a pop of (unexpected) color… but is it too much? A different purse or tote would definitely change the vibe of this outfit. Your thoughts?

Audrey Hepburn style inspiration: Plaid shirt + shorts + silver hoop earrings

This week, I’m posting a series of posts celebrating and appreciating Audrey Hepburn’s enduring style inspiration. This series was inspired by a combination of factors:

Inspiration photo (linked in paragraph below)

Next in this mini-series of inspiration is an outfit inspired by a costume that Audrey Hepburn wore in the film Sabrina, a casual button-front plaid shirt, shorts, and slides combo. There are lots of photos, film stills as well as behind-the-scenes publicity shots, of Audrey in this casual outfit, but I was particularly drawn to this little-seen photo of her in this outfit beside a leafy lattice work, shot in and around her apartment in 1954.

Interpretation

How did I make this outfit my own?

It’s clear that Audrey — and/or Edith Head, the lead designer on the Sabrina set — has wrapped a button-front plaid shirt around her waist, to showcase how tiny her waist was. I simply knotted one of my plaid button-front shirts in front, but I did pop the collar. I also am wearing longer shorts than she wore, as well as slingback wedges, rather than the wedge mules she sported.

And, of course, one last shot in full color! 😀

Hope y’all enjoyed this second of three Audrey Hepburn inspiration posts this week! Stay tuned for one more…

New eShakti skirt | Teal + brown + white

A couple of months ago, I was contacted by eShakti to select a new clothing item from their site. I have worked with eShakti quite a few times over the years, as seen here and here, for starters. I ultimately selected a floaty midi skirt with a palm leaf-print design.

For the sake of full disclosure, I must point out that that this was my second selection for an eShakti item this spring; I will detail my failed first attempt in my monthly budget adventures post later this month. This post is also not sponsored by eShakti; although I was contacted by them to select a complimentary clothing item of my own choosing, there was no obligation to provide a review. I am doing so because I want to share my experience and photos with my readers.

I went the custom sizing route for the skirt, as you can see by the label and pics below. I’m very glad to report the skirt does fit. (Whew.)

Fair warning, this is a photo-heavy post!

I like the wide and high-waist design of the skirt, and this design looks a bit retro to me. It is floaty and flippy, and I lost no time in twirling in my new skirt! 😀

The skirt is also lined, thank goodness, as the fabric is quite thin and lightweight. The fabric for both the skirt and lining is polyester crepe, which means I did have to use my static guard spray on the skirt, to make sure it didn’t cling throughout the day. (You can also read about my love of the static spray here in this “Everyday faves” post.)

As the skirt design feels both fresh and retro to me, I stuck with simple pieces to pair with it. I wanted the vibe to be soft and simple. Brown and turquoise remain one of my favorite color combinations, so I layered my brown cardigan over a simple white tank top. My tortoiseshell peep-toe wedges tied into the brown color tones, as did my vintage sunglasses.

My white tank top provided a nice backdrop for my gold bar pendant necklace. And my finishing accessories were my thin gold-and-pearl hoop earrings and my turquoise stud earrings. Ultimately, I felt pretty and feminine and comfortable in my new skirt and outfit today!

Mixing red + orange together for fall

I wore this outfit during new faculty orientation week at my new college. I wanted to look pulled-together but also a bit casual. And obviously, I wanted to represent my area, the library, in a positive way!

I started with my red knit dress — a comfortable and more casual choice — and layered my dark denim jacket — also casual — over it. To look more pulled-together and finish off the outfit, I then chose my dark denim peep-toe wedges and my orange patterned scarf.

The red and orange together is also a great combination as we transition to autumn!

The final finishing touch? My reddish orange lip stain, Revlon Colorburst Balm Stain in “Adore.”

It’s been awhile since I’ve worn these peep-toe wedges, and I had forgotten how comfortable they are! So cushy, particularly around the peep-toe detail. The Dexter line from Payless never fails to be comfortable.

I wore this outfit the second day of new faculty orientation (here’s what I wore the first day), and I smiled when a new colleague commented, “Oh! I didn’t realize yesterday that you were so tall!” 😀
