Tobi review | One sweater cardigan, two outfits

Another day, another Tobi clothing item to style and enjoy! You can read my first Tobi review here in this post, where I go into more detail about Tobi and its site and styles, and how I paired two Tobi clothing items together, a navy “Schoolboy Ribbed Sweater” and a black “Mel Pinstriped Scarf.”

This time around, I styled this Carly Draped Cardigan, which is my favorite of the three items I selected from Tobi. (It was originally priced $82 but is currently on sale for $31.) Sam was again VERY doubtful of this cardigan since I usually wear more structured pieces — but once I put it on, we both loved it!

In fact, I loved this sweater cardigan so much that I wanted to feature TWO different ways I wore it. Y’all know how much I love remixing!

Look #1 (casual remix):

The first outfit with this Carly Draped Cardigan (this style of cardigan is also called a “waterfall cardigan” or an “open cardigan”) is a casual look — but honestly, I would also wear this to work because my work place is pretty casual. I paired this cardigan over olive ankle pants, grey leather-and-suede ankle boots, and a grey tank top. You could also make this look a lot more casual by wearing sneakers or flats.

This sweater is soooooo comfy and cozy, y’all. And the quality seems pretty high to me, as the material is soft (not scratchy!) and pretty substantial for knitwear. The ribbed detailing along the drape-y bits, cuffs, and hem speaks to the overall quality of this Carly Draped Cardigan.

I had a lot of fun playing with the front drape-y bits, as you can see in the photos below! I wanted to show y’all a few different ways you could style a draped cardigan like this.

First, I pinned one of the ends over to the other side, letting the ends cascade down.

Next, I draped one of the ends across and over my opposite shoulder, letting the other end hang down to create another cool, asymmetrical look. (This was actually my favorite way to wear this cardigan.)

Finally, I took the end hanging down from the previous method and pinned it on the other side, so that the cardigan hems lined up a bit more.

  • Carly Draped Cardigan:  c/o Tobi, new
  • Olive ankle pants: Tommy Hilfiger via Macy’s, old
  • Leather-and-suede ankle boots:  Naturalizer, old
  • Earrings:  Gift from my friend Stephanie, a few years old

Look #2 (work remix):

For this second look, I kept the grey cardigan and the ankle booties but switched out the ankle pants for tights and a black pencil skirt. I really liked the juxtaposition of the body-conscious foundation of the pencil skirt and tights with the unstructured and looser sweater cardigan on top.

I also think wearing black ankle boots would be a good choice with this outfit, as it would streamline the legs more. I will probably wear it that way next time!

  • Black pencil skirt:  ModCloth, old
  • Ribbed tights:  Walmart?, old
  • Tall high-heeled boots:  Rampage via Nordstrom, over a decade old

Which way did you like this cardigan best? Do you have a draped cardigan in your wardrobe? Which of my three Tobi items did you like best?

SIA interpretation: Synesthetic art

It’s time for my interpretation of this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, this round curated by SIA co-founder Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey.

SIA inspiration pick:

Salazar chose a beautiful painting by Kansas City artist Melissa McCracken as the inspiration. McCracken has synesthesia and can see colors in music, which she then translates into paintings. AMAZING! You can read about her process here in this interview. One of her paintings is for one of Salazar’s favorite songs — Iron and Wine’s “Boy with a Coin” — which explains why Salazar chose this particular piece.

In the collage below is a detail from the painting, which you can see in full here on her website.

What inspired me the most was the sense of movement in the painting, and I tried to capture that in what I wore as well as through the setting and style of the photos. All the various colors — shades of blue, white, pink, yellow, etc. — are in the floral print of my maxidress, and I brought out colors in the two scarves I wrapped around my sun hat, as well as in my bronze shawl and yellow colorblock tote bag.

I wore this casual outfit on my birthday this past weekend, and part of my day included going out to Browns Point in north Tacoma, to visit the lighthouse there, tour the old lighthouse keeper’s cottage, and walk along the beach. The weather was perfect — finally! We’ve been under a literal haze of smoke the past two weeks, due to forest fires in British Columbia and east side of Washington state.

Below are closeups of my olive sun hat (I’ve had this hat for a loooong time, although this might be the first time it’s made the blog?), and I was inspired to wrap a couple of thin scarves around it, to bring out more of the colors both in my maxidress and in the inspiration painting. I also wore my turquoise-and-bronze beaded earrings I got during our 2010 Thailand trip — and my teal toes also fit right into my inspiration outfit!

For these pics, I just walked along the beach, enjoying the breeze off the Puget Sound and the sunshine, while Sam walked alongside me, taking photos. I like the more natural feel of the photos, and you just can’t beat a gorgeous, wraparound water view for a backdrop!

Still time to participate in SIA!

Everyone — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! — is welcome to participate. Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also just fine — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator, Salazar, at 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by tonight, August 14. Salazar will then post the SIA round-up on her blog, 14 Shades of Grey.

Can’t wait for this week’s round-up!

White lace dress + cargo vest combo

If you look through my Pinterest boards — especially my “White Lace Dress Ideas” board — then you’ll know I’ve pinned several versions of a white lace dress/skirt + olive cargo vest combo, like here, here, and here.

So I have been waiting to wear this particular combo for awhile now… and that time is NOW:

If you follow my Instagram, then you know I had henna done at the Tacoma pride festival a couple of weeks ago. I love how the henna design on my hand looked like a variation of lace itself right next to the lace design on my dress. And the reddish brown hue of the henna ties in with my cognac wedges — and my coconut shell necklace. I also wore stud earrings my paternal grandmother made decades ago out of petrified wood.

I wore my bangs back on my new pixie cut this day — it’s super easy to style right after a shower! I still use my dry shampoo paste on this shorter cut, a process I outlined in this post here.

The mural on the stairs, seen above, and the retaining wall, seen below, is known as the “Dometop Mural” and is part of the Tacoma Mural Arts Project. I’ve been wanting to take photos here for awhile now, and it seemed like a perfect opportunity to do so.

Remixing my floral shirtdress as a long cardigan

Earlier this year, I loooooooooved remixing my wrap dress as a long cardigan. Kezzie, a longtime reader of this style blog (thank you!) mentioned in a comment on that post about how she also has remixed shirtdresses as long cardigans or jackets. I cataloged that brilliant idea in my head — yes, I mentally picture my brain as a kind of library card catalog, complete with drawers and categories — and brought it back out again when I purchased my new-to-me floral shirtdress.

Here’s a quick side-by-side comparison of remixing this shirtdress, first as a tunic over leggings, seen at left, and this time as a long cardigan or jacket over ankle pants, seen at right below. And the shorter length of this shirtdress works particularly well for wearing it as a long cardigan!

Librarian for Life + Style | Remixing my floral shirtdress

I loved wearing this outfit, y’all. So much I wore it twice! Once to work, and then again on the weekend to a reading discussion group. And since I layered the shirtdress-turned-long-cardigan over a sleeveless shell, it was totally wearable for a summer work outfit. I could have worn any number of shoes with this outfit, so if your work dress code doesn’t allow for open-toed shoes or sandals, you could easily pair this kind of look with pumps or flats.

I pinned my bangs back on my new pixie cut and added a thin black headband to play a bit with it, and I fluffed up the back. And instead of big earrings or black metal hoops, I went with little turquoise drop earrings to pick up on the bits of turquoise in the floral print.

And last but not least, this is the third in our series of taking pics along East 34th Street Bridge, a fun way to capture the seasons here in Tacoma. So here you go, summertime and full-blooming, leafy trees along East 34th Street Bridge in east Tacoma! See here for winter pics, and here for spring pics along this same bridge.

Sam’s style | Preppy kilt

It was sunshine-y but cool in that special PNW way, and Sam was FEELING the kilt this day. I did not mind at all.

I like that the top half of his outfit is a bit preppy, with the plaid button-front and sweater vest. And the bottom half is casual kilt style, with his utility kilt (or “utilikilt” — but I also sometimes use the terms “cargo kilt” and “hiking kilt”) and hiking socks.

And hello to Sam’s flowing locks! He usually wears his longer hair pulled back in a low ponytail, but today, he set the curls free. I am not AT ALL jealous of his curly hair (says the straight-haired lady… with a not-so-straight face). 😉

Details of Sam’s outfit:

  • Plaid button-front:  Hugo Boss, thrifted at local Tacoma shop, new
  • Sweater vest:  Kohl’s?, had for years
  • Utility kilt:  Highland Kilt Company, old
  • Hiking socks:  Fred Meyer, old
  • Brogues:  Payless, old

Happy Friday, y’all! If you’re in the mood for more kilt outfits — and who isn’t?! — be sure to check out Sam’s utilikilt here in this post, and the full Fraser tartan dress kilt here in this post.
