Feeling very PNW in navy stripes + olive vest + scarf

I am in the habit of repeating an outfit on the weekend that I happened to wear for a casual Friday work day. And that happened with this outfit! I wore it to work for a professional development day for all faculty and staff, and then I wore it again on Saturday when Sam and I went to another $7 mid-morning movie. (We saw Logan, and it is goooooooood.)

I felt like I was definitely in the Pacific Northwestern style groove in my new navy-striped tee from J.Crew Factory that I paired with my trusty olive cargo vest and cognac riding boots. It’s a combination that’s casual, comfy, practical, and not at all fussy or trying too hard. That’s PNW style in a nutshell.

We took photos out by Ruston Way waterfront, up on the north end where there’s a new cinema. There’s a path that leads along the waterfront, but we decided to take photos up on the upper steps that then lead down to the path. I liked that it looked like the edge of the steps went right into the water. This was a beautifully sunny morning, a brief respite before more rain.

I don’t think I’ve highlighted this scarf on the blog before. It’s a scarf that my mom gifted me years ago, and it’s made out of knits repurposed from old sweaters. It has a heart on one end, and a stack of books on the other end, with literary genres listed inbetween. The genres included are:  adventure, poetry, fantasy, fiction, history, biography, thriller, religion, travel, military, science fiction, western, romance, mystery, classics, and nonfiction. A perfect scarf for a librarian!

It was a last-minute decision to throw on this scarf, as I thought it might be chilly where we were all meeting for the keynote address that was kicking off the professional development day. (I was right. I wore the scarf all day.) But what I didn’t realize is that the scarf, with its green and blue tones, has the colors of regional sports teams, specifically the Seattle Sounders (Major League Soccer) and the Seattle Seahawks (National Football League). So all day long, colleagues came up to me and asked if I was either a Sounders or a Seahawks fan! 😀

To help illustrate this, here are the logos for the Sounders and the Seahawks, which both incorporate similar shades of green and blue:

It was like I was getting bonus credit for being a PNW sports fan! I will take it. 😀

Print-mixing gingham with a novelty print sweater

A quick note to please enter my holiday GIVEAWAY for a chance to win your own teeth whitening kit! You can read more details and my own review of the teeth whitening kit here in this post.

I have worn the navy + pink gingham button-front top I bought earlier this fall, but I realized it hadn’t made it to the blog yet. Time to correct that! I have worn it a couple of times underneath my “Follow Your Heart” novelty print sweater, as a way to subtly mix prints.

I wore the button-front and sweater combo with my olive cargo ankle pants, for another subtly holiday-appropriate color combination. My burgundy patent leather brogues finished off this masculine-inspired, casual work look.

The backdrop is a nearby park and playfield, which we stopped at on our way to mail off Christmas cards and presents, before I had to go to work. I thought it would be fun backdrop — and I have always loved the swings!

King’s Books + fall layers for work day

One last call to vote for your favorite outfit of October — thanks in advance! 🙂

I didn’t initially plan on documenting this outfit for the blog, but after we found ourselves enjoying a light dinner after work in the Stadium District, Sam was open to taking pics. What I’m wearing today is like a combination of this casual outfit (navy striped tee + green infinity scarf) with this casual work outfit (navy striped tee + cargo vest + brown boots). The fall layers served me well on this drizzly fall day.

A few notes about today’s work outfit:

  • I didn’t wear the scarf or the cloche during the work day (both were just for outerwear purposes)
  • I didn’t get a closeup of my flesh-colored tights, which are ribbed and thicker than regular hose. The pattern and texture of these tights are more noticeable in real life.
  • Those creases in my pencil skirt? A result of working all day — and extra proof that I do actually wear the outfits I show on the blog. I usually take pics at the beginning of the day, so as to avoid showing these kinds of creases, but it’s kind of nice to see them here — and a reminder of why I document my personal style journey!

After dinner and a drink (I had a Maker’s Mark old-fashioned) at Doyle’s Pub after a particularly good work day, we walked across the parking lot to browse through one of Tacoma’s best local bookshops, King’s Books. As the mural states, it’s “almost a city block of books,” a cheeky reference to Powell’s Books in Portland (which actually is a city block of books). King’s Books also has two resident cats! 😀

What I wore on voting day

Today is Election Day in the U.S.! In Washington state, along with Oregon and Colorado, we have mail-in voting — that means we can vote at home instead of having to stand and wait in long lines to vote on Election Day! — so this is technically what I wore a couple of weeks ago when I dropped off my mail-in ballot on my way to work. But that didn’t translate well to a blog post title. 😉

I’m NOT going to get into politics or specifics about any politician or candidate as that’s not the point or focus of this style blog. But I will say that for my American readers, I hope you are/were able to vote and do vote, via whatever voting methods are available to you in your state.

I love this photo above! Not just because of my delighted “I did it!” facial expression, but also because Sam managed to capture the EXACT moment the envelope was sliding down the chute. Awesome!

The first time I wore this dress, as seen here, I didn’t like the extra line of white stitching on the bust, so I mentioned the possibility of blacking out that bit of stitching. And I did! (I just used a black Sharpie.) I felt MUCH more comfortable wearing the dress this time, and I don’t think it detracts from the rest of the interesting seaming and details on this dress.

Librarian for Life + Style | Trial fit dress, before and after

It was a windy day, so I’m glad I wore a sheath dress. This was the dress that eShakti made for me for a “trial fit” exercise this past summer. I wanted to transition the dress for fall, as the colors of the waistband and stitching (olive with orange, yellow, and white stitching) are perfect for the fall season. Transitioning the dress for fall basically boiled down to me adding tights and closed-toe shoes! I also took a bronze shawl with me to work, in case I got chilly. (I did.)

I think this is the first time I’ve paired black tights with my beloved bronze Franco Sarto pumps (which I thrifted a few falls ago!). I really liked the mix of neutrals and how the black tights made the bronze heels look a bit darker.

Dark floral + sunshine

I snagged this dress last fall at a friend’s fashion swap, and I wore this dark floral print this past winter, as seen here. I figured it was time to finally wear this cotton dress in summertime! The weather was in the 80s and sunny — perfect for light layers and sandals!

By the way, I tried on a couple of “completer pieces” with this dress, including my light denim jacket and my dark denim jacket. I didn’t want to go with a black cardigan, as that’s what I wore the dress with before, but then I spied my short-sleeved white cardigan, which felt just right. My strappy black sandals helped ground the look, and my white shell earrings and bracelet (handmade by my paternal grandmother when I was little) tied in with the cardigan.

I felt super pretty in this comfortable, late-summer outfit, and my husband especially liked it.

My tote bag — my summer bag of choice — has a little darker edge, with its typewriter skull design. (My husband picked this tote bag up at a writer’s conference this past year.) I wanted to add a little edge to my outfit, to keep it from being too girly or sweet.

The backdrop? My new campus! There’s a pretty bridge connecting the two parts of campus, so we chose that as the main setting.

And lastly, below is me having some fun recreating this statue of a woman and a book, an art piece located right across from the library on my new campus.

I start my new job next month, so it was a good time to visit the campus again and get excited about “starting school” soon. Working in academia, I still always get butterflies in my tummy when fall term rolls around! 🙂
