SIA interpretation: Black Cat

A quick note that the poll is open for you to vote for your favorite outfit from last month — thanks in advance!

And now it’s time for my interpretation for the most recent Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, this round curated by SIA co-founder Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey.

The inspiration:

Salazar chose “Kuroki Neko” — aka “Black Cat” — a painting by Japanese artist Hishida Shunso (1874-1911).

Collage of "The Black Cat" and my inspiration outfit. "Kuroki Neko" ("Black Cat") by Hishida Shunsō, 1910, is in the Public Domain.

My interpretation:

I have several cat-print items in my wardrobe, including this adorable cat-print tee, so my main task was to narrow down which cat-print item in my wardrobe to choose from… and that’s when I realized that I hadn’t featured my cat-print dress on the blog for a few years. I have consistently worn this dress — it’s a staple during the fall season, and those on Instagram have seen me wear this dress already this fall (along with this same blanket scarf, although worn in a slightly different way) — but I just hadn’t bothered photographing it recently.

The colors in this dress are just so perfect for the inspiration artwork, as well as the kitty cats in the pattern!

And just how perfect is this background?! I knew this little Japanese garden would be a good starting point, as the artist for this week’s SIA inspiration artwork, Hishida Shunso, is Japanese. In the garden, I then spied this Japanese maple tree in this gorgeous shade of yellow, which matched the inspiration painting so well! It was meant to be. (Happy sigh.)

I forgot to get detail shots of my pumpkin earrings, but you can sorta see them in the pic above. I wore this outfit last Monday, the day before Halloween, so they still fit thematically. And in real life, the orange of those earrings popped against the black blanket scarf. One could argue that the pinstripes in this scarf also echoed the veins in the leaves in the inspiration painting? Right? That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it. 😉

My tights also have a ribbed texture, so I’m mixing three different patterns together! Hello, my name is Jen, and I like to find new ways to pattern-mix.

Remixing this dress:

I mentioned at the beginning of this post that I hadn’t featured this cat-print dress on the blog for awhile, so I thought I’d make a collage of the previous ways that I have worn this cat-print dress. You’ll notice in the middle pic below that the back of this dress is actually a V-neck — but this time around, I switched the dress around to wear the rounder neckline in the back!

There is still time to participate in SIA:

Everyone — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! — is welcome to participate. Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also just fine — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator, Salazar, at 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by tomorrow, Tuesday, November 7th. Salazar will then post the SIA round-up on her blog, 14 Shades of Grey, this Wednesday.

Can’t wait to see the SIA round-up!

Fall casual with a light sweater + slip-on sneakers

Transition from summer to fall can be a tricky transition up here in the Pacific Northwest. We go with the actual seasons up here, so it now officially fall. We’ve had a hot summer with very little rain (and lots of wildfires!), so I am SO READY for the cooler temps that have come our way this past week or two. Right before the college fall quarter began, we had a cooler day, with breezes to blow out the residual wildfire smoke, so Sam and I took the opportunity to go up to Seattle for a day trip.

So in that summer-to-fall transition period, I paired a light, three-quarter-sleeved sweater with skinny jeans and slip-on sneakers. I pulled up the pant legs to give my legs and feet a little air, as it was a day we were planning on doing a lot of walking (we took the train up to Seattle and then went around town on the light rail, so we knew we would be on out feet!). This combo felt just right for this in-between seasonal time and weather.

We were headed for the Henry Art Gallery — we signed up for free tickets through the museum pass program through the Seattle Public Library system! — which is on the University of Washington main campus. So we took the train up to Seattle and then took the light rail subway system up to the UW campus and then had fun walking through campus and seeing all the new students on orientation tours.

We took photos along the way across campus. There’s a large fountain on campus, surrounded on four sides of roses, which felt like a picturesque spot for pics.

And OF COURSE there is always time for an outtake… or two… or three. 😉 We took jumping photos in front of the fountain on the UW campus, and then I felt inspired to do a little twist on the top level of the Henry Art Gallery.

Red + chambray casual | Ruston Way waterfront

One last summer casual look before fall officially begins…

I did not plan on taking photos of this casual outfit, so you are getting a totally unvarnished look, one without any jewelry or makeup. We had time to catch up on a lot of house projects over my mini-break after summer term ended, so we decided to get out of the house and get some iced coffee one afternoon and then decided impromptu to enjoy the sunshine and cool breeze along the Ruston Way waterfront.

If you’re a longtime reader (as always, thank you!), then you will be familiar with Ruston Way, as we have taken numerous photographs along this long stretch of waterfront, starting here in this post. There are a series of parks all along Ruston Way and amazing, historical sights, including this stretch in which the city has preserved the remnants of an old dock. I thought it would be interesting to take photos along this striking backdrop.

For work on our house projects, I was already wearing these red cargo shorts, red sports bra, and grey lace-up sporty flats. To go out in public, I simply changed out the grubby tee I was wearing for a thin chambray button-front shirt. A really quick change! My red patterned tote bag was hanging on a hook near the door, so it was easy to grab that on the way out.

My main takeaway here is if you have classic, basic pieces, it doesn’t need to take much — or much time — to look “put together.”

Casual Friday Pride

I showcased this new tee in last month’s monthly budget post, and I wore it on a day in which I knew I would be attending an art gallery reception immediately after work. So this is another example of a “day-to-night” outfit for me.

I seriously got SO MANY compliments on this outfit from work colleagues, which I wasn’t expecting. Tacoma Pride!

We took these photos at a little Japanese friendship garden. I’ve been wanting to take photos here for awhile — I’m so glad it worked out this day!

I was also really pleased that I was finally able to get a good photo of these tuxedo-stripe jeans, so you could get a sense of how the black stripe looks against the dark denim, without me having to lighten the photo.

It was a happy accident that I happened to be wearing my “Rockstar” nail polish while wearing my Tacoma Pride tee. This nail polish is bright pink but includes all colors of the rainbow if you look close! 😀

Pencil skirt work casual

If you haven’t already voted, a quick reminder that the poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from last month! 😀

This outfit is quite similar to this outfit that I wore last month:  same color palette of red + grey + black; a grey library-themed tee; the same red cotton jacket + black striped canvas flats. But there’s one major difference — this time, instead of black ankle pants, I wore my stretchy black pencil skirt. This simple swap really changes the whole look for me!

Also, as I frequently like to say, remixing = real life!

Pairing a pencil skirt with sneakers feels so cool and sporty! I loved wearing this combo! And OF COURSE, I felt compelled to wear red lipstick with my red cotton jacket!

It was a bit cooler this summer work day, so the cotton jacket worked as a light layer, for outside breezes and for inside air-conditioning. But the outfit worked without the jacket, too, for a casual work combo.

Also, there’s a bonus outtake below, enjoy!
