Mint + navy | Color-coordinating a scarf + cardigan

🍀 🍀 🍀 I’m wearing green on my blog for St. Patrick’s Day! 🍀 🍀 🍀

I knew I wanted to pair this colorblock-trim cardigan with my navy dress, a riff off when I wore this cardigan over my navy dotted skirt. That morning as I was getting dressed, I happened to look over at my scarf bins in our closet… and realized that one of the vintage scarves I thrifted in the fall had the EXACT colors of this cardigan. EXACT. (I can neither confirm nor deny a happy dance commencing after that revelation.)

The front of my cardigan is distinctive with a row of navy trim down the front with brass buttons as well as navy-trimmed pockets, so I didn’t want to detract from those details with my scarf. I could have doubled up the scarf to wear it more like a neckerchief, but then another light bulb… I could wear my scarf with the ends hanging down the back!

I am a fashion rebel, y’all. 😉

The mint-and-navy scarf I thrifted last fall is a Vera Neumann scarf, and it is so pretttttttty. I was looking at posts, like here and here, about how you could date the scarf, and most of the clues go back to the signature. The signature on my scarf with its taller and more curved “V” looks like the signature that began in the late 60s and in the 80s. Based on the more streamlined, preppy-type pattern, I’m going to guess the early ’80s, rather than the ’60s, when her scarves had more graphic and geometric prints.

Below is a closeup of my scarf’s signature, plus how well it matches the trim of my cardigan. Y’all know how I love color-coordinating, so this discovery had me over the moon!

Looking over these pics, I really should have used either my steamer or my wrinkle releaser spray on my outfit… on the plus side, these wrinkles serve to highlight everyday use. Just another example of how I really do wear these outfits in real life! 😉

Also, it was super fun and sweet when a student worker in our library that day stopped short, all wide-eyed, and asked, “Did that scarf come with that cardigan? How does it attach?” And then she was amazed that I had bought each piece separately, even years apart! 😀

Zoo casual | Light layers on a chilly summer day

Just a quick reminder that the poll is open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine last month — thanks in advance!

As Sam and I wrapped up our final weeks in Portland — in amongst all the packing and buying stuff for the new home — we took the time to visit the Oregon Zoo again, to round out our membership. It happened to be a chilly summer day with off-and-on rain, a not-uncommon occurrence here in the Pacific Northwest. It’s also always colder in the mornings here, and we had an early start to the day, so I dressed in light layers.

My outfit on the blog today is definitely one of my more casual outfits, and it’s not really about style — it’s more about comfort and practicality. Some days are like that. And I wore it, so here it is.Librarian for Life + Style | Casual layers, outside the zoo at the Washington Park transit stopThe layers included a teal long-sleeved tee, my olive cargo vest, my green “Anne of Green Gables” infinity scarf, and my light grey hooded jacket. The hooded jacket was perfect for the off-and-on rain showers we had during the day. I also combined old and new by wearing my newly gifted library card socks with Skechers sneakers I’ve had for over a decade.

And even though I’m super-casual here, I’m still color-coordinating. (I am my mother’s daughter!) My teal socks tie in with my teal tee, and my light green scarf plays off my olive green cargo vest.

Sam also caught a shot of me gazing at the lions, below. As a Leo, I obviously have a special affinity for lions! 🙂

Do you like going to the zoo? I’ve showcased several zoo outfits here on the blog throughout the years, including here, here, and here.

Olive + black remix | Weekend casual

Once again, I’ve remixed olive + black! Both are great neutrals on their own, and together, they are magic — at least for me, obviously! I wore this casual outfit on the weekend, when it was super sunny and gorgeous. We walked down to one of our favorite local pubs for a dinner in the sunshine.

This is also not the first time I’ve worn this mint-and-black-polka-dotted crossbody bag with black stripes, as evidenced here and here.

With dinner — we got to eat outside and enjoy the great weather! — I enjoyed a really fresh cocktail called “Garden Party,” mixed with gin and mint. The green also coordinated with my outfit! 😀

SIA interpretation: René Lalique brooch

For this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey chose a gorgeous art nouveau brooch by French artist René Lalique. This “Dragonfly Lady” brooch, ca. 1897-98, was presented at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition in 1900, as part of Lalique’s art nouveau jewelry collection.

And there’s still time to participate in the SIA challenge! You don’t have to be a blogger, and you can also take flay lays of outfits or selfies. Just send a photo of your inspired outfit to Salazar at 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by tonight. Salazar will have the inspiration round-up on her blog, 14 Shades of Grey, tomorrow.

Here’s my SIA interpretation:

I wanted to mix gold, mint, and black and an interesting piece of jewelry. My first thought was my mint statement earrings, so checkmark for the jewelry and mint. Then came my graphic print blouse, which has a pattern that echoed the color scheme and art nouveau feel. I finished the outfit off with my teal green cardigan — and yes, I did wear this outfit on St. Patrick’s Day!

We were planning on taking photos in a different location in the neighborhood, and then I spied this tree. And then I realized that the shape of the tree echoed the shape of the dragonfly brooch — happy accident!

Plaid casual + pattern-mixing

I actually wore this outfit back around Christmas (which also explains why my hair is slightly longer and lighter than seen on Monday’s outfit post), but I thought y’all would still like another look at a casual look of layering and pattern-mixing. Winter term at my college has begun, so there will be fewer casual outfits in the coming months.

I wore this outfit to go errand-running during break time, and it’s my favorite kind of casual winter outfit:  comfortable and cozy yet still “put together.”

For a chilly winter day, I layered a plaid button-down shirt over a longer tank top. I thought my “Anne of Green Gables” scarf was a nice play off the green tones in the plaid, and added another (subtle) pattern to the mix. Y’all know I love to pattern-mix! 🙂

I also like how there’s a slight ombre look to the outfit, with the lighter green of the scarf going into the brighter green in the plaid and then leading into the teal green of the tank top.
