SIA interpretation: Gerda Wegener

It’s time for my interpretation of this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, which I curated for this round.

SIA inspiration pick:

I recently watched The Danish Girl on DVD, and it’s based on the 2000 book of the same name and the real-life relationship between Danish artists Gerda Wegener and Einar Wegener, who became Lili Elbe, one of the first-ever documented recipients of sex reassignment surgery. I was really struck by the artwork of Gerda (1886-1940), who was played by Alicia Vikander in the film, who also won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for the role.

Therefore, for this next SIA challenge, I selected a self-portrait of Gerda Wegener, a self-portrait in the Art Deco style. You can also read more about Wegener here and see more of her artwork here.

Most of Gerda Wegener’s artwork seems pretty colorful, but I was drawn to the more muted tones of this self-portrait. Perhaps because the more muted tones seem to suit this transitional period between summer and fall? Perhaps because I was also drawn to the complicated expression on the artist’s face?

I had a few different ideas for outfits inspired by this self-portrait. In the end, I went with a floral pleated skirt in muted tones of bronze and light blue, as the colors were in the inspiration painting, and the pattern played off the couch print she’s sitting on. I layered a light blue cardigan over a teal tank top to add some depth, and my champagne-colored satin flats looked more bronze-y when paired with the skirt.

For accessories, I have multiple pieces of pearl jewelry, so I had some options there (pearls are my favorite gemstone). In the end, I went with my multi-colored pearl necklace as it has the largest-sized pearls (I call it my “gumball pearl necklace”), which paired nicely with my black pearl stud earrings. Finally, I chose my vintage wicker bag because it has a bakelite handle, which is a little nod to the Art Deco period of the painting.

We had planned to take photos at Wright Park, which was near where we had brunch that morning. But as we were walking toward Wright Park, I spied this “Love” cornerstone of a church opposite the park, and I thought that would be a perfect alternative. The Danish Girl is a love story at its core, and the neutral colors of the wall and stone also tied in with the inspiration painting. It just felt right!

Below, a closeup of my multi-colored pearl jewelry — and my sassy pixie haircut! 😉

Pleated skirt? Commence twirling! This skirt is a bit shorter than I remember it being. (I’ve also gained weight around my middle in the last ten years since I bought this skirt, so that’s another reason why this skirt seems to be getting shorter, hah!) I bought this skirt and cardigan together at the same time, but I think this cardigan may have seen its last day… its cost-per-wear is in fractions of pennies by now, so it’s had a good run!

Casual Friday Pride

I showcased this new tee in last month’s monthly budget post, and I wore it on a day in which I knew I would be attending an art gallery reception immediately after work. So this is another example of a “day-to-night” outfit for me.

I seriously got SO MANY compliments on this outfit from work colleagues, which I wasn’t expecting. Tacoma Pride!

We took these photos at a little Japanese friendship garden. I’ve been wanting to take photos here for awhile — I’m so glad it worked out this day!

I was also really pleased that I was finally able to get a good photo of these tuxedo-stripe jeans, so you could get a sense of how the black stripe looks against the dark denim, without me having to lighten the photo.

It was a happy accident that I happened to be wearing my “Rockstar” nail polish while wearing my Tacoma Pride tee. This nail polish is bright pink but includes all colors of the rainbow if you look close! 😀

Books, books, books | Little free library + book-print skirt

I haven’t worn my books-and-cats-print skirt in awhile, and since it’s cotton, it’s a decent choice in summer. I went a bit retro pairing the circle skirt with a buttoned-up cardigan and a patent leather skinny belt with a fun heart buckle.

We have quite a few “Little Free Libraries” around town, so I went online to the map of officially registered little free libraries and found a very sweet-looking one in east Tacoma for a fun photo backdrop. (I also wore a variation of this outfit the next day to work at the library. Waste not, want not. 😉 )

Below is a closeup of my turquoise skinny belt with the heart buckle detail. And OF COURSE I had to wear my turquoise stud earrings to tie in with everything. That’s what I do y’all. Color-coordinate.

It’s summer, so that means wearing one of my favorite types of sandals, the flat t-strap sandal. These are my second pair of tan-and-gold t-strap sandals, as I detailed in this prior post.

And if you’re wondering how I managed to wear a three-quarter sleeve cardigan in the summer sunshine and not burn up, it’s because I layered it over a sports bra. No extra tank top layer around the middle, which really cuts down on the sweat factor. One of my favorite clothing tricks!

Style inspiration | Blue stripes + black belt

I recently came across this article featuring Michelle Obama’s stylish combo of a high-lo striped button-front tunic, black skinny trousers, and wide black corset belt. I have long been a fan of Michelle Obama’s personal style, which has always felt so accessible even when she chooses edgy, fashion-forward pieces.

When I saw Obama’s outfit, I immediately thought, “Oh, I have an idea of what to wear!” So I immediately pinned her outfit for inspiration. I paired my thin-striped blue button-front shirt with black ankle pants and black patent leather heels. My wide black stretchy belt mimicked the corset belt of Obama’s inspiration outfit.

It’s so hard to photograph the thin stripes of this button-front shirt! The stripes are more obvious in person.

I felt a little mod in this outfit, with the ankle pants and wide belt. It was a very comfortable outfit to wear for work!

SIA interpretation: Score card

It’s time for my interpretation for this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge!

It was Erin’s turn to curate, and she found an original score card/program from the 1908 World Series, to honor the Chicago Cubs winning the World Series for the first time since 1908! Plus, the vintage card highlights men’s clothing on the score card. 🙂

And there’s still time to participate in this week’s SIA challenge. Both bloggers and non-bloggers are invited to participate. Just send a photo — selfies or flat lays also just fine — of an outfit inspired by this week’s inspiration artwork. Send a photo to Erin at looplooks@gmail.com by tonight, and Erin will post the round-up on her blog, Loop Looks, tomorrow morning.

Librarian for Life + Style | Baseball score card SIA challenge

My interpretation’s starting point was my librarian baseball tee, which also happened to have most of the colors in the score card. Win-win! I thought about wearing my red ankle pants, but I decided to go with these darker tan trousers because they had more of a menswear feel to them. I also wore pearl earring studs, to subtly call out the shape of baseballs. (Yes, I really do think of those kinds of details.)

At the last minute, I finished off the outfit with my striped canvas flats, to echo the red-striped socks the dapper man is wearing on the score card.

I wore this casual outfit this past weekend, to go out for breakfast and do some errands and to just get out of the house.

On our way to coffee and breakfast, we stopped at a local park which has a baseball diamond. I thought it would make an appropriate backdrop for photos. I definitely was feeling the more dramatic and moody pictures, and the backdrop lent itself to that.

We didn’t bring any baseball equipment with us, but Sam challenged me to throw a pitch, anyway. I obliged, and he captured a couple of fun pics. 🙂
