Pairing orange floral with black

My outfit today was inspired by two outfits I saw via Instagram, this one from @iamterrib and this one from @suzannecarillo. Both outfits paired an orange floral dress or skirt with black… and thus, a style idea was born! 😀

It also was a practical choice to pair a heavier jacket and tall boots with this dress, as our transition to spring up here in Tacoma has been a decidedly cold (and rainy) one.

I last paired this orange floral dress with a white cardigan; this time, it was fun to play off the vibrant floral print with all-black pieces and accessories, including a moto-style jacket, tall black heeled boots, and black metal hoop earrings.

I also thought it made for a nice contrast to pair the heavy canvas of this jacket with the floaty fabric of the dress.

Although I think the look would be sharper with a slightly shorter jacket, I really liked wearing this outfit. It felt fun and fresh and unexpected, just right as we are still transitioning into spring up here in the PNW. So many colleagues and students commented on the orange floral print, that it cheered them up! Me, too. 🙂

Equestrian-style remix

To celebrate my 5th blog anniversary, I’m personally hosting a giveaway for 5 lucky winners. There are two days left to enter the giveaway, so visit this post for all the details on how to enter.

Remixing the details

This outfit came about because I happened upon one of my earrrrrrrrrly outfits from the blog — as in third outfit EVER (!!!) on the blog — and thought about how I would rewear the equestrian vibe behind this 2012 outfit.

What stayed the same? The scarf, the cognac bow belt, and a grey cardigan (although I replaced my older grey cardigan a couple of years ago with the same cardigan in the same color from the same brand).

What changed? I switched out the boot-cut jeans for a dress (worn as a skirt) and leggings. And I switched out my brown loafer heels for cognac flat-heeled boots. Finally, the equestrian vibe makes more sense with riding boots!

2012 outfit:  Equestrian vibe

Also different? My haircut and glasses. My photos are also better now — and the camera angles more flattering! 😉

I tied this equestrian-print scarf a different way this time. I modified my “scarf necklace” trick, seen here and here, as a way to tuck in the ends of the scarf, but I left the scarf loose in the front so you could see more of the print. A couple of colleagues did notice the scarf trick and asked how I did it! 🙂

I felt the current remix worked better than the older combo because I now have cognac boots, which make more sense with the cognac belt and better overall with the equestrian theme. It also helped to bring in a bright color, like this blue dress, to liven things up a bit. It was a super comfortable outfit to wear to work, and I liked the challenge of remixing an outfit I wore early on at the start of this style blog.

Remixing my bandage dress

I’ve worn this bandage dress c/o The Kewl Shop a few times before, but I had always worn it layered under something else, like a cardigan or sweater. This time, I layered it over other items of clothing, a black turtleneck and black leggings. I love thinking about finding new ways to wear clothing in my closet!

2014 outfit (with a cardigan)  //  2015 outfit (with a sweater)

I felt very secure in this outfit; this stretchy bandage dress was doing all the work of holding me in and supporting me. I am very much covered in this outfit — the top of my neck, face, and hands are the only bits of skin showing — yet the overall impression feels strong and sexy. I think it comes down to the silhouette the dress helps create, and the confidence I had in wearing it.

I thought about going with my black metal hoop earrings, to keep everything black except the dress, but then I spied these lavender metal earrings. I thought the color and shape of the earrings would be a nice play off the pattern and colors of the dress.

And as you can tell in these photos, it was raining really hard. Thank goodness I now have a phone that is water resistant! It makes it possible to take photos in the rain, which is very much the normal weather this time of year in the Pacific Northwest. Also, it tends to be overcast when it rains (but not always!), which makes the lighting particularly good for photos.

This outfit was definitely a hit at work! I had several meetings that day, and almost everyone who complimented me on the dress — all ladies, btw — wanted to touch the stretchy fabric. Against all that black, the blue, purple, and white feathery pattern of the dress really stood out, and I joked that the pattern was like a Rorschach test up close. Colleagues also got a kick out of when I stretched the dress so that the pattern and colors got distorted, like you can see in the photo below. And a couple of people commented that they liked the exposed zipper down the back. It’s a fun dress to wear!

Rainy day layers | Wool + denim + leggings

Another day of rainy day layers? You’d think I lived in the Pacific Northwest or something… 😉 Seriously, y’all. So. Much. Rain. And it’s funny to me how it really is hard to capture rain in a photograph. It was legit raining while we took these photos — none of the drizzly rain we’re (in)famous for in the PNW, but honest-to-goodness rain — and you really can’t tell.

On to today’s outfit! I don’t wear my burgundy zip-up sweater cardigan all that often, because it is 100% wool and really warm. It’s also wool, and therefore itchy, which means I have to wear a long-sleeved tee or turtleneck underneath it. So now y’all know that it was both rainy AND very cold when I wore this sweater cardigan.

And I’ve worn this sweater cardigan with these boots before, as seen in the collage below. But this time around, I wore it with a denim skirt and leggings (and a different-colored turtleneck). Remixing = real life.

2013 outfit — which I really want to rewear soon! Also, it’s fun to pair up photos like these, like I’m looking at myself across time and space.

Sam joked that it the gentleman in the mural who’s facing outward, as seen above, looked like he was enjoying my posing in front of his mural. That made me laugh! Sam always does manage to make me laugh, especially when we’re taking photos! 😀

And more info about this backdrop! I’ve been wanting to take photos at this location for awhile now. It’s a series of murals made out of ceramic tiles, and they look so different depending on whether you’re viewing them up close, like in the pic above, or from further away, like in the pic below.

The murals depict historical views and buildings from the Stadium District neighborhood in Tacoma around the turn of the century. There’s so much public art here in Tacoma, and this is a great example of public art integrated into a private building. You can read more about the murals here and here.

And of course, as we walked across the street after taking photos (where there is an iron fence), Sam suggested I mimic the gentleman in the central mural who is gazing out over the city. No city view for me — the view past the trees is industrial, hence the trees — but we like to be thorough, y’all. 😉

Red + black + smiley faces

When I’m tired, I tend to go for easy color combinations that I know flatter me. I’m quite pale, and a true red brightens up my skin tone. That was the basic motivation behind this outfit, when I winterized my sleeveless red dress by layering it over a black turtleneck.

Sam also really liked this outfit because it’s very similar to the outfit I was wearing when we first met, a little over 20 years ago. Back then, I wore a red button-front shift dress over a black turtleneck, along with black tights and black suede flats. Very simple, very mod. There are differences with this outfit, of course — a fit-and-flare red dress and tall black boots — but the color combination and overall visual effect are essentially the same. Like I said, I like tried-and-true combos. 🙂

And of course, wearing red lipstick when I’m wearing red is a no-brainer. So easy! We also took pics after I got home from work, so you’re seeing an accurate depiction of what my L’Oreal Infallible Le Rouge 10-Hour Lipstick in “Refined Ruby” looks like… after almost 10 hours!

I also rewore my “Hammer Time” necklace made out of microfiche, which I picked up at a librarian conference a couple of years ago. It’s the first time I’ve worn this necklace at my new workplace, so all my librarian co-workers got a kick out of it! 😀

It was a rainy day, hence the umbrella. And WOW, is this smiley face umbrella photo-bombing my outfit photos or what?!

Sam also captured a couple of fun shots of me twirling our smiley face umbrella!
