Pride tee + cherry blossom trees

Today, I wanted to be both colorful and comfortable, for a day of meetings with faculty and administrators. And I’ve joined a “Safe Zone II” training program this spring — additional training for how to be an LGBTQ ally — so I wanted to wear my heart on my tee, so to speak. ♥

And springtime here in the PNW means off-and-on rain, as well as off-and-on sunshine. Because OF COURSE the sun came out *just* as we were about to take photos, after it had been overcast ALL DAY.

It’s still chilly up here in the PNW, so leggings and tall boots do not look out of place (yet). And cherry blossom season is my favoritest part of springtime, so we took these photos out by a blossoming clump of trees after work. ♥♥♥

Y’all have seen this clutch before — it’s a little bag I carry with me throughout the day, as I’m always on the go in and around the library, as seen in my most recent “day in the life” post — and I brought it out for these pics because I thought it added an extra pop of fun and pattern into the outfit. And it’s what people see when I’m walking across campus, so it’s true to life. Students and colleagues alike frequently comment on this clutch and ask me where I got it! 😀 (It’s from Out of Print, one of my favorite clothing sites!)

SIA interpretation: Dogs playing poker

A quick note to please vote for your favorite coat — err, outfit — last month in the monthly reader poll post. Thanks in advance!

It’s time for my interpretation for this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge. This past week, Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey chose our inspiration artwork.

Still time to participate in SIA!

Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also just fine — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator, Salazar, at 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by the end of Tuesday, Feb. 6th. Salazar will then post the SIA round-up on her blog, 14 Shades of Grey, this Wednesday.

The inspiration artwork:

Because the Lunar New Year festival is coming up, and it’s the Year of the Dog, Salazar wanted artwork featuring dogs. She finally settled on “A Bold Bluff,” one of the paintings in C. M. Coolidge’s “Dogs Playing Poker” series. (Did you know that it was a series?! Read all about its fascinating history here.)

'A Bold Bluff' by C. M. Coolidge, circa 1909

Interpretation:

I noticed the bookcase in the background of the painting… which gave me the cheeky idea of wearing my bookcase-print skirt… which features cats! I am a total Leo, so incorporating cats into an outfit inspired by a painting of dogs made me laugh. Novelty animal prints for the win! 😀

After work, we took these photos in our dining room, so the lighting is definitely adding a yellow tinge. But I think this also echoes the inspiration painting! We also already happened to have a deck of cards on our green tin tray on our dining room table — no lie, we had been playing cards over the MLK Jr. holiday weekend and just never put up the deck of cards (Stephanie, I know you are not shocked by this!). So I pulled the cards into our SIA photoshoot, because I am never one to miss a chance to be cheesy! 😀

I also enjoy the fact that our dining room table and the green, brown, and russet tones in the room and curtains also tie into the colors of the inspiration painting.

I wore this outfit on a work day that included library introductions and tours for first-year students, so the book-print skirt also served as a conversation starter for students. And so many of the female students remarked on the fact that this skirt has POCKETS. Women know what’s up, y’all. ♥

Royal blue + kitty cats, too

Can you guess the starting point for today’s outfit?

Librarian for Life + Style | Royal blue + kitty cats, too

It wasn’t the skirt — rather, it was the blue leggings that I wore as tights! This is one of my favorite clothing tricks during fall and winter, to wear leggings as tights. They’re warmer than tights and provide more coverage and hold, plus they’re easier to pull on.

Here’s how the rest of the outfit came together in my head:

  • Next came the blue cardigan, as it coordinated with the tights.
  • Then came the cognac boots, as I thought my black riding boots would look too harsh.
  • Then I thought of my cat-print skirt, as it incorporates cognac and orange-y tones that would go well with the boots.
  • Then came the cognac belt — I thought my blue patent leather belt would look odd right next to the blue cardigan. I could have also untucked my cardigan, but I decided I wanted a tucked-in look that day. It just depends on the day, as y’all know I’m a fan of untucking my tops.
  • Then I decided on my topaz drop earrings, to bring out more earth tones.
  • I went with my new cognac, black, and white tote bag because it tied together the black and cognac tones in the skirt.
  • At the last minute, I added my blue beanie, which I thought would be a fun finishing touch — and an unexpected one!

It was super windy this day, so thank goodness I was wearing tights! Sam was able to catch a few fun pics that show how the wind affected my skirt. 😀Librarian for Life + Style | Royal blue + kitty cats, too

Both the beanie and bow belt are accessories I got while living overseas in the UAE. It’s been awhile since you’ve seen this beanie, which surfaced in an early post here, and here in my travel post to Amsterdam. The bow belt you have seen lots of times, like here and here, and it actually came with my cat-print dress, most recently seen here (although I NEVER wear this bow belt with my cat-print dress!).

Pairing orange floral with black

My outfit today was inspired by two outfits I saw via Instagram, this one from @iamterrib and this one from @suzannecarillo. Both outfits paired an orange floral dress or skirt with black… and thus, a style idea was born! 😀

It also was a practical choice to pair a heavier jacket and tall boots with this dress, as our transition to spring up here in Tacoma has been a decidedly cold (and rainy) one.

I last paired this orange floral dress with a white cardigan; this time, it was fun to play off the vibrant floral print with all-black pieces and accessories, including a moto-style jacket, tall black heeled boots, and black metal hoop earrings.

I also thought it made for a nice contrast to pair the heavy canvas of this jacket with the floaty fabric of the dress.

Although I think the look would be sharper with a slightly shorter jacket, I really liked wearing this outfit. It felt fun and fresh and unexpected, just right as we are still transitioning into spring up here in the PNW. So many colleagues and students commented on the orange floral print, that it cheered them up! Me, too. 🙂

Equestrian-style remix

To celebrate my 5th blog anniversary, I’m personally hosting a giveaway for 5 lucky winners. There are two days left to enter the giveaway, so visit this post for all the details on how to enter.

Remixing the details

This outfit came about because I happened upon one of my earrrrrrrrrly outfits from the blog — as in third outfit EVER (!!!) on the blog — and thought about how I would rewear the equestrian vibe behind this 2012 outfit.

What stayed the same? The scarf, the cognac bow belt, and a grey cardigan (although I replaced my older grey cardigan a couple of years ago with the same cardigan in the same color from the same brand).

What changed? I switched out the boot-cut jeans for a dress (worn as a skirt) and leggings. And I switched out my brown loafer heels for cognac flat-heeled boots. Finally, the equestrian vibe makes more sense with riding boots!

2012 outfit:  Equestrian vibe

Also different? My haircut and glasses. My photos are also better now — and the camera angles more flattering! 😉

I tied this equestrian-print scarf a different way this time. I modified my “scarf necklace” trick, seen here and here, as a way to tuck in the ends of the scarf, but I left the scarf loose in the front so you could see more of the print. A couple of colleagues did notice the scarf trick and asked how I did it! 🙂

I felt the current remix worked better than the older combo because I now have cognac boots, which make more sense with the cognac belt and better overall with the equestrian theme. It also helped to bring in a bright color, like this blue dress, to liven things up a bit. It was a super comfortable outfit to wear to work, and I liked the challenge of remixing an outfit I wore early on at the start of this style blog.
