Fall casual with a light sweater + slip-on sneakers

Transition from summer to fall can be a tricky transition up here in the Pacific Northwest. We go with the actual seasons up here, so it now officially fall. We’ve had a hot summer with very little rain (and lots of wildfires!), so I am SO READY for the cooler temps that have come our way this past week or two. Right before the college fall quarter began, we had a cooler day, with breezes to blow out the residual wildfire smoke, so Sam and I took the opportunity to go up to Seattle for a day trip.

So in that summer-to-fall transition period, I paired a light, three-quarter-sleeved sweater with skinny jeans and slip-on sneakers. I pulled up the pant legs to give my legs and feet a little air, as it was a day we were planning on doing a lot of walking (we took the train up to Seattle and then went around town on the light rail, so we knew we would be on out feet!). This combo felt just right for this in-between seasonal time and weather.

We were headed for the Henry Art Gallery — we signed up for free tickets through the museum pass program through the Seattle Public Library system! — which is on the University of Washington main campus. So we took the train up to Seattle and then took the light rail subway system up to the UW campus and then had fun walking through campus and seeing all the new students on orientation tours.

We took photos along the way across campus. There’s a large fountain on campus, surrounded on four sides of roses, which felt like a picturesque spot for pics.

And OF COURSE there is always time for an outtake… or two… or three. ūüėČ We took jumping photos in front of the fountain on the UW campus, and then I felt inspired to do a little twist on the top level of the Henry Art Gallery.

Winterizing a bandage dress

Last week, I posted about winterizing a cotton summer dress. This week, I winterized the bandage dress I received late last fall from The Kewl Shop by layering a cozy sweater over the dress.

I really liked the mix of textures and the mix of proportions with this outfit. I also liked the effect of the flared dress hem peeking out of the sweater. I felt like this would be a great modern version of a Judy Jetson outfit!

By the way, if you’re wondering why you’ve never seen this cozy black sweater on the blog before, that’s because it’s new. Or,¬†it’s new to me. My friend and colleague Stephanie was about to donate some of her clothes, so I went over to her house for some friendly fashion-swapping. It was one-sided, though, so maybe I should call it “fashion-getting.” ūüėČ I’ll have more details in my monthly closet adventures post.

Definitely a work outfit on the more casual side for me, but I wasn’t teaching that day or going to any meetings, so I felt comfortable wearing this outfit. The blue leggings were warmer than tights,¬†and the bandage dress (which is more of a tunic on me) still provided enough coverage. The blue color of the leggings also brought out the blue tones in the print of the dress.

Here are different ways I’ve worn this bandage dress so far:

Stripes + florals + bicycles

Mixing stripes + florals + bicycles… as you do. Or rather, I do.¬†ūüėČ

As you can see, I had a bit of fun mixing patterns today! The patterns work together, I think, because of the common color combination of red and blue. (I love me some red, white, and blue!) Plus, the bicycle print is smaller in scale, bridging the bolder patterns of the striped flats and the oversized floral pattern of the belt and headband.

The most common questions I had today were:

  • Are those… bicycles? [Yep. So very Portland.]
  • Does your headband match… your belt? [Yep. I made both from leftover fabric from when I hemmed this this¬†dress.]

And the short hair experimentation continues! You can also see how this self-made headband looked when I had longer hair here and here.

Malt shop cutie

My husband, Sam, inspired this post’s title. When I got home from work on this day, he exclaimed, “You look so cute, I want to take you to a malt shop!” ūüėÄ

Details: ¬†Grey striped t-shirt: ¬†J.Crew, this summer {similar} {similar} ¬†/ ¬†Red ankle pants: ¬†Macy’s, gift-carded two winters ago {very similar} ¬†/ ¬†Leopard flats: ¬†Karen Scott via Macy’s, newly gift-carded {exact} ¬†/ ¬†Black & white headband: ¬†c/o Jill’s Frills, last summer {similar} / ¬†Silver circle earrings: ¬†Lia Sophia, gift from my husband, old {very similar}

I am technically pattern-mixing with 3 patterns total: ¬†the scallops on the headband, the stripes on the t-shirt, and the leopard print on the flats. But it’s not overwhelming, because two of the prints are quite small, and the prints are visually spaced out. I could have worn this with my black flats, but my new leopard flats are so fun and give this outfit just a bit more punch.

Yes, the short hair experimenting continues… I’m thinking my mom will LOVE this hairdo. The ‘do is reminiscent of the early ’60s — as is the entire outfit, come to think of it.

SIA: Sunsets and bike racks

For this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge,¬†Jess from¬†Animated Cardigan¬†chose¬†a modern sunset from Canadian artist¬†Douglas Coupland, whose works are on exhibit right now at the Vancouver Art Gallery. You can¬†read all about it and the artist here.

Also, there’s still time to participate in SIA! ¬†Just take a picture of you wearing something inspired by this week’s SIA choice — you don’t have to have a blog to participate — and send that picture to Jess at animatedcardigan@gmail.com by¬†tonight, June 30. Jess will then post a round-up shortly thereafter on her¬†Animated Cardigan blog.¬†ūüôā

Like I said last week, I love the colors and pattern-mixing of dots + stripes in this modern painting. It really is perfect for this time of year, especially with the July 4th holiday coming up.

It makes me happy when I see a painting or other work of art and immediately think of several pieces or outfits. To me, that means that I have a lot of variety in my closet, and that I’m getting better at remixing pieces and seeing possibilities. I thought through several possibilities, and this¬†is what I ultimately chose to interpret this sunset painting:

And it cracks me up that YET AGAIN I have chosen this clothing-swapped cardigan for an SIA challenge (also see here and here). It’s just so versatile! I paired it this time with my royal blue dress, red striped slip-on flats, and my yellow colorblocked tote bag. I also snuck in the black color in the painting with my black sports bra (which is a great alternative to a tank top in the summer, btw).

  • Pattern-mixing: ¬†Check! (those starbursts in the cardigan + stripes in the flats)
  • Yellow + blue + red + black + white: ¬†Check! (I worried at first that all these colors would look too busy or random, but I really like how they all came together in this outfit)

A note about the backdrop: This orangey yellow building is near where we live, and we walked around to the back for a quiet space to take photos. Lo and behold, there was an empty bike rack, which seemed a perfect backdrop for the inspiration painting!

And now it’s time for cheesy outtakes! You’re welcome. ūüėČ

Oh, and you might notice, I’ve gotten a hair trim — loving the ’70s-style layers!
