SIA interpretation 2: Monkey lithograph

Now for my SECOND interpretation for this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, the first inspiration artwork curated by newest SIA co-host Daenel @ Living Outside the Stacks. That’s right, I was so inspired that I wore TWO inspiration outfits; you can see the other one on Monday’s post. And you can see the entire round-up — including Sam’s SIA-inspired outfit! — today on Daenel’s blog!

The inspiration artwork:

Daenel chose this lithograph, seen below, because she ♥ ♥ ♥ monkeys, and the colors are so springlike. As Daenel herself said, “Since this is my first time curating, I thought I’d go with something fun and colorful, with plenty of room for interpretation.” Click here for more information about the lithograph.

My second interpretation:

My second outfit idea started with my vintage Hawaiian-print dress (which was actually made in Hawaii, as per the label), because of the tropical theme of the lithograph. There’s also a tiny bit of red in the postcard via a bird in the lower left corner. I then layered my yellow starburst cardigan over the dress, because there is a fair bit of yellow in the postcard.

It amused me that I used the same outfit formula for both interpretations — a print dress layered under a cardigan — but the colors and print make the two outfits look very different.

I added my cognac rope tassel belt to help give shape to the Hawaiian-print dress, and you can see more of the print in the pic below.

And a note about my accessories:  I chose my yellow and white colorblock tote for obvious color reasons; my bamboo earrings fit in with the tropical theme; and I added my turquoise stud earrings to bring in the bit of turquoise in the other bird in the lithograph postcard.

The backdrop is actually the same backdrop from the trench coat + red crossbody bag outfit post, but the vines have now exploded into leaves thanks to our recent, extended bout of warm spring weather. I thought they made for a nice backdrop that also echoed the backdrop from the postcard.

And last but not least, during our photo shoot, I borrowed my husband’s elephant cane — he was using it on the day — because the russet and gold tones of the cane fit in with the colors of the inspiration lithograph. Also, why not add one more animal to the mix?! 😉

There’s still time to participate in SIA!

Everyone is encouraged to participate — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also welcome — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator, Daenel, at livingoutsidethestacks@gmail.com by tomorrow, May 22nd. Daenel will then post the SIA round-up on her blog, Living Outside the Stacks, on Wednesday, May 23rd.

And also check back Wednesday on my blog for my second SIA-inspired outfit!

Simple + neutral with a red crossbody bag

I loved this outfit so much — and the photo location! — that this is a warning that this post is more photo-laden than usual.

The backdrop was a total accident, albeit a happy one. It’s a branch-covered wall by a public parking space in downtown Tacoma. While we were out and about a few weeks ago (yes, it took a while to get this outfit up on the blog), we parked in this parking lot for the first time. As we got out of the car, I saw the wall and went, “Huh. That might be a good place to take pictures.” And it was! I didn’t realize how good this backdrop would be until Sam kept saying, “Wow!” while he taking photos, about how dynamic the branches looked in photos.

But now about the outfit! It’s SO SIMPLE yet low-key dynamic on its own, I suppose. I paired a basic white cardigan with black skinny jeans and a tan coat. I then decided to make myself feel a bit more pepped-up with red lipstick… which led to the red crossbody bag. And the gold trim on the red crossbody bag led me to my classic gold hoop earrings (reproductions of Audrey Hepburn’s own earrings in Sabrina, a birthday gift last year).

Classic, simple pieces that just work. Every. Single. Time.

Librarian for Life + Style | Closeup of textured slip-on flats

These textured espadrille slip-ons were the last things I grabbed. I could have easily gone for my classic black ballet flats, or my leopard print flats, or even my striped slip-on sneakers, which would all have looked just fine. But I chose these espadrille slip-ons because the colors, tan and black, just seemed to tie the color-blocked nature of my outfit together. And they felt a bit unexpected amidst all the classic pieces. It just worked for me! 🙂

I had to darken the photo above a bit to get a better look at these gold hoop earrings, which are actually clip-ons. Being such a classic design, these earrings are a fun and easy way to add some easy glamor to an everyday kind of outfit.

Gingham + necktie style inspiration

A quick note that the monthly reader poll is open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine last month — thanks in advance!

Today’s outfit was inspired by this outfit from Suzanne Carillo’s style blog, an outfit I pinned immediately. She remixed a gingham midi dress + a red tie/scarf under a black sweater vest, which I turned into a gingham button-front shirt + burgundy tie layered under a black scoop-neck dress. Suzanne paired her outfit with shiny red heels, and I went with my shiny red buckled flats.

It’s interesting to me that Sam remarked in the morning that this outfit was “intentionally attention-seeking,” and it did turn out to be a head-turner. I got lots of comments and compliments all day, from both colleagues and students. I have to wonder why, because it’s definitely not attention-seeking due to any skin showing; literally only my face, neck, and hands are on display. One could even describe this outfit as prim. Is it my obvious joy wearing this outfit that others can feel? Is it because I, a woman, am playing off both masculine and feminine style tropes with this outfit? Is it simply how the black scoop-neck neckline of the dress stands out visually against the gingham and pop of burgundy at the top? A combination of all the above? What do y’all think?

Y’all, I think it’s pretty obvious that I loved loved loved wearing this outfit! It’s not very spring-like, but WHATEVER. The heart wants what it wants. ♥♥♥ (And actually, black is totally on trend for spring this year. My beloved Tom & Lorenzo have commented about it.)

I wore this outfit on a heavy teaching day, and it pleased me so much that when I walked into one class, one student exclaimed, “You look like Hermione from Harry Potter!” I clapped my hands in glee at this realization, oh yes I did. #hermionemyhero #harrypotterforever #teamgryffindor 😀 😀 😀

I’ve mentioned before that I get a lot of personal joy out of slipping in subtle, subversive details when I get a chance. It’s often the “quirky” part of my personal style. And today, I borrowed one of my husband’s ties, one that he thrifted years ago, which has a design of thumbs up underneath “Women’s Lib” statements. Yaaaaaaaas. 👍 👍 👍

And y’all KNOW I matched my lipstick to my tie. Because that’s how I roll through life, color-coordinated whenever possible. (Love you, Mom, you taught me well!)

Pink jeans + black stripes with a pop of floral

This outfit was inspired by another librarian’s combo of pink jeans + black stripes, which you can see here on What the Librarian Wore’s Instagram feed.

I wore this outfit a couple of times recently, first for errand running on a day off. I grabbed my floral clutch at the last minute as way to add in some more color and pattern-mixing. (I then rewore this exact outfit to a conference later that same week — just picture this exact outfit with my black tote bag instead of the floral clutch.) And because some of our errands included being downtown, we were able to take photos by a group of blooming cherry blossom trees. I loooooove cherry blossoms, and it was a lovely way to add another shade of pink to these photos! ♥

Is it strange that I love that one of the bow ends on my flats is sticking up, as you can see in the photos above and below — and that it reminds me of cat ears every time I see these photos?! If that’s wrong, then I don’t wanna be right! 😉

And HELLO to (accidentally) color-coordinating my nail polish with my rose-colored jeans! This polish is technically copper-colored — it’s “Penny Talk” by Essie, part of the “Mirror Metallics” line of polishes, and you’ve seen me wear this polish on the blog before — but it looks more a rose gold on me. It’s a super flattering neutral tone, and I love the polish’s metallic shine.

Valentine’s Day casual in red + black + snakeskin

Happy Valentine’s Day!

This casual outfit, in black with pops of red and silver, feels appropriate for Valentine’s Day. It’s the accessories that jazz up what is otherwise a very simple combo.

This is a closeup of my new turtleneck cable sweater from Lands’ End — I love that the cable knit is a bit thinner than other styles.

These sets of photos also demonstrate how tricky the light can be during the winter. The pics above are a bit blown-out, which makes it easier to notice the details of my outfit, but it also makes my umbrella look like it’s floating in air because the white panels totally disappear into the background. The pics below are more saturated, and this is honestly how these photos came out — they appear darker just because of the angle in which my husband held my camera phone! Librarian for Life + Style | Black cable sweater + silver hoop earrings + red lipstick

And while I was putting this post together, I thought that it would be fun to try a couple of photos in black and white, which you can see below. This outfit, while simple, also feels pretty classic — appropriate when wearing these earrings, which are reproductions of the ones Audrey Hepburn wore in the film Sabrina. A classic love story — also appropriate for Valentine’s Day! ♥
