Burgundy brogues + plaid shirtdress

I felt really great in today’s outfit, my white-and-grey plaid shirtdress, which I’ve worn before here with my grey ankle boots. This time, I wore the shirtdress with grey heather tights, a textured silver metallic belt, and burgundy patent leather brogues. It’s such a classic silhouette, this fit-and-flare shirtdress, but the details of the brogues and the metallic belt provide some unexpected details up close.

A fit-and-flare dress practically begs to be twirled in, right?! Right.

I wore my burgundy overcoat on this chilly fall day, which provided a fantastic pop of color to my outfit — and it also really does pop against the backdrop of orange-y fall foliage!

And last but not least, this is the fourth and final post in my (informal) series of taking pics along East 34th Street Bridge, a fun way to capture the seasons here in Tacoma. So here you go, fall foliage along East 34th Street Bridge in east Tacoma! See here for winter picshere for spring pics, and here for summer pics along this same bridge.

SIA interpretation: Vogue peacock

It’s time for my Style Imitating Art (SIA) interpretation! It was my turn to curate the SIA challenge, and I chose a vintage Vogue cover, from November 1909, featuring a peacock scene in shades of grey, black, white, and orange.

There’s still time to participate in this week’s SIA challenge! Both bloggers and non-bloggers are invited to participate. Just send a photo — selfies or flat lays also just fine — of an outfit inspired by this week’s inspiration artwork. Send a photo to me at librarianforlifestyle@gmail.com by tonight, Monday, Oct. 31, 10 p.m. PST. I will post the round-up on my blog tomorrow morning,  All Hallow’s Day.

It did not take me long to figure out what I wanted to wear for this week’s challenge. I started out in monochromatic grey, from my grey cotton knit dress (which has black seaming) to my tights to my ballet flats, with a pop of orange at the waist. I pulled in a bit of extra black with a grey-and-black ombre scarf, and I chose pearl jewelry:  white pearl drop earrings + a black pearl necklace.

I knew I wanted a pop of orange, and I had first thought of tying my orange sash, seen here, around the waist. And then I remembered my orange polka-dot ribbon belt, which meant I could get in the orange color PLUS the dotted pattern of the peacock’s feather. Score!

A closeup below of the belt plus the black seaming of the dress:

Floral + geometric pattern-mixing redux

A couple of weeks ago, I featured the pattern-mixing combo of my floral popover blouse + geometric scarf — only I had to resort to a “flat lay” due to all the rain lately. I asked the question at the end of that post if y’all wanted to see the combo again in real life when I had the chance.

Here it is!

I paired this floral + geometric combo with a burgundy pencil skirt this time around, as well as grey tights and Mary Jane heels.

Sam and I managed to get pics inbetween rainy spells — and just as the cherry trees have started blooming! We took pics beside a tree with bright pink blossoms, as well as a tree across the road with white blossoms. Sam even thought to take a pic whose perspective merged the two trees and shades of cherry blossoms together, as seen below.

I’m glad we were able to get ‘real life’ pics of this combo. These turned out to be quite cheery photos, especially to document the transitioning seasons.

Mixing classic + modern | Shirtdress + ankle boots

Last week, I mentioned that I had received my plaid shirtdress from eShakti (remade after the first one was two sizes too big), and I lost no time wearing my new dress for work. The shirtdress is a classic design, with a shawl collar, banded waist, and flared skirt. I wanted to add a modern edge to this classic dress, which led to my pairing this dress with my grey suede-and-leather booties.

Details, like the fabric-covered buttons and angled placement of the plaid pattern, make this dress feel special. Details like the pockets make this dress feel practical. The best of both worlds! 😉

The day I wore this dress to work included teaching and a full faculty meeting, and I was quite pleased to receive a few compliments on my first day wearing my new dress! Whenever I wear a full-skirted dress with pockets, I always get delighted exclamations from women:  “POCKETS?! That’s awesome!” Women just GET IT. Bless.

Sam suggested this background, a shady sidewalk with moss-covered walls and steps. I really loved how the silver-and-white dress pops against the green backdrop. What’s funny is that this angle of the sidewalk makes it look like a peaceful, serene scene — but on the other side of that sidewalk is a major, constantly busy road in Portland. Those shots of me laughing, like the pic above, are because I am reacting to the drivers going by and Sam saying, “Aaaaaaaand they’re gone! You’ll never see them again! Snap, snap!” 😉

And finally, I just loved this picture above, with the afternoon setting sun in the background.

Grey + green + dark denim

Another day, another grey + green outfit! 😉 I wore this outfit last week, but I couldn’t get pics because of the determinedly rainy weather (and long days at work). So I rewore the outfit last weekend to get my hair trimmed and do some errands — and take pics on a rare sunny winter day!

I’m still loving the “stacked bob with bangs” haircut, and this go-round, I got a purply-red demi-permanent rinse. A demi-rinse is still subtle, so you can really only tell when the light hits my hair. But I like knowing it’s there. 😉

We took pics on an branch-covered wall on the side of I-5, near the artsy Mississippi St. neighborhood. What you DON’T see in these pics, just to the right out of frame, is a broken-down van, a la shades of Walter White in Breaking Bad. I thought it was empty, and Sam didn’t tell me until afterwards that there were at least two people inside who were watching our quickie photo shoot. Thank goodness he didn’t tell me! But oh well, I hope they enjoyed the show! 😉
