Eyelet + gingham summer casual

I’ve worn this eyelet + gingham combo more than one weekend this summer. It’s been a hot one, y’all! I can’t remember if we took pics the second or third time I wore this outfit, but never late than never… 😉

And below is a closeup of the mix of textures and prints, the eyelet and the gingham. And along with the checkered fedora, which I borrowed from Sam, this is yet another example of subtle pattern-mixing! 😀

And I’ve been wanting to take photos in front of this fountain in downtown Tacoma, on Broadway and 11th. On a weekend while doing multiple errands downtown, we took advantage of the opportunity. It’s often easier for me to pose for photos in front of a “tourist-y” location or backdrop, since I don’t stand out or attract any extra attention for taking photos. 🙂

And when I wear this eyelet top, I wear a red sports bra underneath — a variation of my sports-bra-as-tank-top trick — to cut down on sweat around the middle. Real life, right? 😉

As country as I get, y’all

A friend of mine — the same friend who invited me to the local fashion show! — recently gifted me a pair of like-new Lucchese cowboy boots she had been moving around with her for years after she stopped wearing cowboy boots. When we were realized we wore the same size shoe, she saw an opportunity to pass them on. Even though I grew up in Texas, and in the countryside to boot (hah! pun intended), I had NEVER WORN real cowboy boots before. (I KNOW.) So we made a deal:  I would try on the boots, and if they fit, then it was meant to be. If they didn’t, then no harm in trying.

Y’all, I tried on the first boot, and it went on with that little “pop” you get when a boot really fits. It was meant to be! These cowboy boots are beautifully simple and well-made.

Prepare yourself, you’re about to see me in cowboy boots. (Mom, this message is especially for you.) Y’all ready? 😉

And OF COURSE my first instinct was to do research. I immediately started searching on Pinterest for casual outfits with cowboy boots, and you can see my “Cowboy boots outfit inspiration” board here.

The day I went over to try on the boots, I wore my denim skirt and my “My y’all is authentic” tee. This simple outfit also felt right with the boots, so I just kept wearing them for pics!

Some extra fun details:  In addition to my “y’all” tee, I am also wearing a Stetson hat. It’s a fedora, not a cowboy hat — even I have my limits — but it is made by Stetson, a well-known maker of cowboy hats. And I am wearing yellow rose earrings, and “The Yellow Rose of Texas” is a well-known folk song (and movie starring Roy Rogers and his horse Trigger). The yellow rose signifies friendship, and the original Caddo Indian name for the state — “Tejas” — means “friendship.”

So, yes, this is as country (and as Texan) as I get, y’all. 😉

The backdrop for these photos is McKinley Park, on the east side of Tacoma, a park that overlooks the Tacoma Dome. So yes, that is the Tacoma Dome that is featured in the backdrop of some of the photos above! It’s actually one of the oldest parks in the city, and includes trails that go down and around the east side hills. However, due to the location of I-5 (a major freeway that connects Tacoma to Seattle), there are also parts of the park that get drowned amidst traffic noise, and some of the views include the highway and its constant construction, as you can see in one of my pics below.

I liked this location for photos of me finally (!) wearing cowboy boots as it’s a park that’s equal parts country and city. Like me wearing cowboy boots! 😀

Below is a close-up of the cowboy boots — I like that you can see the special details of the stitching when you look close. Thank you, Christina, for gifting me these boots — and, as you put it, “embracing my heritage.” LOL! 😀

I enjoyed that the first time out wearing these boots, I had to run an errand — and as I walking, I overheard a woman say to her significant other, “Oooh, I like those boots! I need a pair!” 😀

Do you have a pair of cowboy boots? If so, how do you enjoy wearing them? Please leave a comment and let me know!

Black + teal summer date outfit

Last Friday, I highlighted what Sam wore for a summer date night — it’s only fair that I share what I wore that night, right?! 🙂

I’ve worn these teal ankle pants with black accents before, as seen here. This time, I tried the trick I had done before with this V-necked tee — I turned the tee around to have the V-neck in the back!

I also borrowed my husband’s black fedora, as the teal stripe in its ribbon totally coordinated with my ankle pants. 🙂

The backdrop is the Puget Sound, along Ruston Way. We discovered a floor mural of the geographic region along the Point Ruston shopping and recreation area. I had to get a photo of the Tacoma part of the mural — and of course, I had to scale Mt. Rainier! 😀

Wonder Woman casual outfit for the Tacoma Festival of Sail

A couple of weeks ago, my husband and I enjoyed an outing to the Festival of Sail which blew into Tacoma for a weekend. Tacoma is one of only a handful of Pacific ports that hosts the historic ships, and the weekend festivities included ship tours, day sails, entertainment, free admission to the Working Waterfront Maritime Museum, and “The World’s Largest Rubber duck.” (Warning: This is another photo-heavy post!)

First up, having fun on the boats:

As I knew we would be walking a lot up and down the waterfront in Tacoma and getting into and out of boats all day, I dressed comfy. (But then, when do I not?) These metallic sandals are the most comfortable sandals I own, with rubber soles that would be ready for any slippery surfaces. My new Wonder Woman tee came next, and then the rest of the outfit was based on incorporating shades of red, navy, and black to go with the Wonder Woman theme. #WonderWomanAlways

The last bit of my outfit was this checkered fedora that I borrowed from Sam, because (a) it went so well with the rest of my outfit, and (b) it kept both the early morning drizzle and the later afternoon sunshine off my face. 😀

And if you’re wondering, “Is that a huge yellow rubber ducky out there in the harbor?” the answer is YES. You’re not hallucinating! As part of the Festival of Sail, we enjoyed the company of a huge yellow rubber ducky. It was awesome! The ducky is one of several designed by Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman and stands roughly five stories tall.

So OF COURSE Sam and I had to have some fun with such a wonderful photo opportunity! 😀

And the closer we got to the rubber ducky by walking down the waterfront, the better the photo opportunities! 😀

SIA interpretation: Greetings from Sonoma

Woot, time for my interpretation for this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge! SIA co-host Erin @ Loop Looks chose an awesome street mural for SIA, a “Greetings from Sonoma” mural, that is a combination of bright colors and patterns and vistas. It’s so appropriate as we transition to the summer season — and it’s appropriate, travel-wise, as Erin is on a trip to Sonoma herself! 😀

The mural is at the Fremont Diner, and you can see more pics of the diner and the full mural here and here.

Inspiration to interpretation, Sonoma to Tacoma:

Hey, that rhymes! 😉 I’ve been wanting to take pics against this mural for awhile, so this SIA challenge was the perfect opportunity.

Librarian for Life + Style | Sonoma to Tacoma SIA collage

The starting point for me for the challenge — besides the mural backdrop — was the red-and-blue colors in the “Greetings” part of the inspiration mural. That led me straight to my red-white-and-blue striped canvas flats. The corrugated backdrop of the mural reminded me of stripes, which led me to my striped shirtdress, plus the light blue color of the dress matched up with the light blue in the Sonoma letters. My vintage wicker bag just seemed to fit the breezy, summer-y vibe of the mural, plus it allowed me to get a bit of orange in the outfit. (There are orange flowers all along the bottom of the Sonoma mural.) I added in bits of additional red, through my lipstick and sports bra (yep, trotting out the layering-with-sports-bras trick again).

Below are some larger pics of the “East Tacoma” mural, which is on the side of the Earth Wise Architectural Salvage building. Earth Wise is an AWESOME place to browse through — we will definitely have to get more pics there this summer!

Gotta admit, I loved how this look came together. I felt casual and cool and ready for summer! 😀

Below is a closeup of the vintage wicker bag I thrifted years ago in Chicago. It’s definitely one of my favorite go-to bags for summer.
