Monthly budget adventures (April 2017)

It’s time to see what my monthly clothing budget adventures were for this month! This month was a mix, and here’s a sneak peek at a few of my purchases:

Local deals

Sam and I recently enjoyed a local “Wine Walk” around the Hilltop neighborhood in Tacoma, where we sampled different wines at different local businesses. It was a great way to get to know the neighborhood!

I picked up two items from two different shops, including this pair of earrings from a local artist line, “Ajmer by Jodi.” These earrings are made from a natural shell called shiva shell, or “Pacific Cat’s Eye.”

I also couldn’t resist this velvet (or velveteen?) fedora at a local men’s store known as “Mr. Mac’s” (I’ve also heard it referred to as “Mac Daddy’s”), which has hats, socks, suits, and shoes in every color of the rainbow. This store is old-school and AMAZING.

You’ll be seeing me wear this snazzy fedora soon!

Poshmark shopping experience

I have discovered Poshmark. Or how I stated it on my Facebook page in early April:  “OMG, I have discovered and fallen into Poshmark, and I may never come back up.”

I have been looking for ages for a white lace or eyelet dress — I’ve even created a “White Lace Dress Ideas” board on my Pinterest — but I was finding it hard to find one that was (a) long enough, (b) had sleeves, but (c) didn’t have bell sleeves. (Too trendy for me.) Then I saw this one on Poshmark. Check, check, check. 🙂 This dress — one of last year’s styles from Joe Fresh — was also featured on two of my favorite bloggers, Corilynn and Merrick’s Art, so that helped to see the dress in action.

I added the leopard print infinity scarf to save money on bundling, plus to add more animal print accessories to my wardrobe. Animal print accessories are really versatile!

I will definitely keep browsing Poshmark — particularly for brands that are sold out online — and the search filters are great, as are the professional communications from Poshmark. It did take longer than I expected for this particular seller to actually send the items, but they arrived in good condition and as advertised.

Canvas flats at Target

I wasn’t planning on buying more canvas flats and sneakers… but dang that Target for having really cute options! This shoe style has become one of my favorites to wear throughout spring, summer, and early fall — they’re so comfortable, and a really easy and casual way to add pattern and texture to an outfit.

I have already worn the canvas sneakers with the geometric design, so you’ll be seeing those soon. And those DV espadrille flats? Amazingly cushy! (I’m saving those for actual summer, when it finally stops raining for a bit.)

Sizing notes:  I had to size down a half-size on the canvas sneakers, but I had to size up a half-size on the espadrille flats.

What I didn’t buy:  Victoria Beckham collection at Target

I also tried on what few pieces of the Victoria Beckham boutique collection were left at our local Target. There wasn’t much left, and what I did try on… I can’t say I was that impressed. I think Victoria Beckham is legit talented as a designer and has earned her high fashion design cred. But her collection at Target was disappointing to me, especially with its odd sizing (the tops ran big while the bottoms ran small, and all the dresses were TOO short!). Just not for me.

Giveaways and gifts

I was the lucky winner of a recent giveaway on the Doused in Pink blog! The prize was my choice of a pair of foldable flats by Fit in Clouds. Their flats fold up in a little bag, which you can put in a purse and take with you, switching out from heels to flats.

I chose the bronze pair, because they were so different and fun. I’m inbetween shoe sizes, and these flats only come in whole sizes. I sized up, just in case, but I could have sized down and been just fine. I think these will also be a super cute option to wear when you’re hosting a party or dinner at home with friends — something sparkly but also comfy.

My husband picked up this embroidered ribbon this past month in Portland — and I’ve already worn it as a belt, as seen in this post. I plan to use the ribbon to make a regular belt plus a headband… projects for the summer!

Last but not least, my mom surprised me this past month by sending me a care package — which included a Pride & Prejudice-themed tote bag and clutch from the Out of Print Clothing site! So sweet! I have the P&P-themed tee, which is more of a true purple color. The color of the two bags is more of a midnight blue.

You can browse all of the Out of Print P&P collection here.

I’ve admittedly been spending more than I’m comfortable with these last few months, so I definitely need to slow it down. I don’t feel as bad about this past month because most of it went to either local businesses or toward local sellers via Poshmark.

(And I still have my eye on one particular item on Poshmark… so you’ll probably see that next month!)

Sam’s style | Olive + black + grey

I didn’t realize until last week’s giveaway winners post that I had totally forgotten to post pics I took of another one of Sam’s outfits this past spring. I didn’t meant to deprive y’all, dear readers! This outfit’s a couple of months old — an oldie but goodie! 😉

So last week you got to enjoy the outtake, this week you get to enjoy the entire outfit of olive + black + grey + tweed.

Another of Sam’s trademark hats! This one is in a black and white tweed that he picked up during our 2009 trip to Vienna. I love how the hat connects to his tweed canvas shoes. PLUS more pattern-mixing with his olive button-front shirt, which has a subtle diamond print when you look up close. (The cat hairs on his black waistcoat are NOT an intentional pattern. 😉 )

Sam’s style | Argyle + layers

As promised in yesterday’s post, here’s another opportunity to highlight my husband Sam’s cool style. Yesterday, a shoes selfie; today, a regular selfie!

Sam is such a pro at layering. And layering with interesting pieces. I’d also like to think my love of color-coordination has rubbed off on him. I mean, a brown argyle sweater cardigan over a a grey button-front, paired with a grey fedora with a brown ribbon, PLUS cognac-tipped shoes that tie in with the cognac diamonds in the argyle print. That is master-level color-coordination that also doesn’t come off as gimmicky. PRO.

Sam and I both love these shoes, which have a kind of old-school but classic look. I think they’re his current favorite right now. They’re from Payless! My husband’s a vegetarian, so we have to get shoes made out of man-made materials, rather than leather — which is harder than you’d think! But Payless always has at least some options with faux leather.

Details of Sam’s outfit:

  • Overcoat:  Zara, bought years ago in Abu Dhabi
  • Sweater cardigan:  Zara? Also bought in Abu Dhabi
  • Button-front:  ???, old
  • Jeans:  Gap, new
  • Shoes:  Payless, new
  • Fedora:  Goorin Bros., bought in Portland a few years ago

I go back-and-forth on whether or not I should provide outfit details when I highlight my husband’s outfits. Would y’all prefer me to include outfit details or not for Sam’s outfits? Please leave a comment and let me know!

Sam’s style | Grey fedora + cords

Bonus Sam style! You’re welcome.

Seriously, isn’t my husband just the cutest — and so stylish! — in his grey cords and grey felt fedora?! And I think he (secretly) enjoys it when I think he looks so good that I have to take pics. All for you, dear readers. I am selfless that way. 😉

Sam recently took stock of his wardrobe and realized he needed some new jeans. I happened to have a couple of Gap gift cards, so it was perfect timing. Plus, we happened to hit the Gap when they were having a “buy 1, get 1 free” sale!!! Serendipity, y’all.

And Sam has NEVER bought cords before, because he’s always felt they were unflattering. But these cords must be magical. I think it’s because they’re a lighter weight of corduroy — they’re so soft! — and we both love the soft grey color. It’s fun shopping for Sam, as we don’t get to do it as often!

Another shoe portrait of us as a couple! I love these tweed herringbone slip-ons of Sam’s, plus you’re getting a sneak peek at my shoes and my outfit. I’ll post those outfit photos tomorrow, so stay tuned!

Sam so often cracks me up when we’re taking photos, so it’s exciting for me when I get to crack him up and capture photos of it!

Fedoras are definitely Sam’s signature hat! This is a fedora we bought at a wonderful little haberdashery shop in Charlottetown, during our first trip to Prince Edward Island (you can see pics from our second trip to PEI here in this post).

Classic style is timeless! I hope you enjoyed another look at my husband’s cool, classic style.

His and hers | Celebrating our anniversary with JORD wood watches + GIVEAWAY

Today is a special day, as it officially marks the 20th anniversary for me and the love of my life. My husband, Sam, and I actually celebrate two anniversaries:  February 1, how long we’ve been together, as well as August 1, our wedding anniversary.

We celebrated our anniversary this past weekend and toasted to when we first met:  Sam was in his third year at college, and I was a high school senior interviewing for an academic scholarship on his college campus. Our paths crossed because he was the editor of the college newspaper, which was hosting a party for the scholarship interviewees. Long story short, we’ve been together ever since. As I like to joke, I got both the scholarship AND the guy. 😉

Our anniversary brunch outing this past weekend also turned out to be a perfect occasion to wear our respective his and hers JORD wood watches. After all, love is timeless, yes? ♥ ♥ ♥

Librarian for Life + Style | His and hers, JORD wood watch review

Full disclosure: This is a post in collaboration with JORD Wood Watches, and my husband received a wood watch of his choice in exchange for a review post on my style blog. As always, we are 100% honest about sharing our personal thoughts and experiences with you.

And BONUS! As a special Valentine’s Day GIVEAWAY for my readers, you can enter to win a $100 e-gift code that you can put toward a JORD watch of your own. Plus, all all those who enter will receive $25 e-gift code. Win-win! Click here to skip to the giveaway info at the bottom of this post.

You might remember when I first received my JORD wood watch, back in June 2015. I’ve worn my dark sandalwood watch several times since, most recently seen on the blog in this post from November. When JORD recently released their new Conway line of men’s watches, I was excited for Sam to try one out. He had been wanting a JORD wood watch of his own! So yes, I got to spoil my sweetie for our anniversary. ♥ And a wood watch would definitely make for a unique and memorable Valentine’s Day gift.

Sam chose the Conway watch in sandalwood and burgundy, a very cool watch and color combination.

Sam is usually the one behind the scenes taking photos of me and my outfits, so it was fun for me to play the photographer for a day. You can check out more of Sam’s style here.

And I think y’all will agree with me when I say it’s a handsome watch for a handsome man!

Q&A

I also thought it would be fun to do a Q&A with Sam, to record his own perspective and thoughts about his new watch.

Jen:  You’ve seen me wear my JORD watch almost two years now. How do you feel about JORD watches in general?

Sam:  I really like that they are distinctive because they’re made of wood, and I like that the wood is sustainably and ethically sourced. They are unique watches for sure.

Jen:  Why did you choose this style of watch? What about this watch appealed to you?

Sam:  I liked everything in this particular line, the Conway line. It’s clean, classic, and versatile, and this particular color combination [sandalwood and burgundy] will go with just about everything I have. The cross-hatching detail down the band is nice, and it matches the cross-hatching on the watch’s face. I also like that they’re easily adjustable with the extra links. [All JORD watches come with a couple of extra links, just in case.]

Jen:  This Conway men’s watch is JORD’s first chronograph watch for men. How do you like the chronograph stopwatch feature?

Sam:  It’s a nice bonus. I also realized that it will help me as a writer. When I read work my work in public, I need to be aware of how long the piece reads. The chronograph is a convenient way to time myself when I’m reading.

Jen:  Can you describe your reaction when you first opened the box and saw the watch?

Sam:  The packaging is classy. I like the wood box it comes in, and that it has this little pillow that the watch wraps around. It feels like I finally have a grown-up watch!

Librarian for Life + Style | Sam with his new JORD wood watch

Jen:  You’ve been wearing the watch a few days now. How does it feel?

Sam:  I do feel it’s important to note that this is the first time I’ve regularly worn a watch in 22 years, so it took a bit of time for me to get used to wearing one again. There’s something kind of traditional about coming in the door, hanging up your keys, and taking off your watch. These are the rituals of unwinding for the day, and I like tapping into that.

Jen:  Would you recommend this watch?

Sam:  Absolutely. For anyone who likes watches, yes. It is a bit spendy [$229 for this particular style of watch], but the quality is worth it. You are getting what you pay for.

Jen:  Any last thoughts or anything you’d like to share?

Sam:  Two things. One, I’ve always been a little jealous of your watch, so it’s nice that we both have one now. [Hah!] Two, I’d like to suggest the idea of JORD venturing out and creating pocket watches. If they ever started making wood pocket watches, I’d be first in line to buy one!

His and hers

We also took some photos together, to showcase our his-and-hers JORD wood watches. There’s a common saying that the longer couples are together, the more they start to look like each other. As we both independently chose JORD watches in sandalwood, I think that saying is coming true for us! 😉

And can I also get a “Hello!” for how stylish Sam is?! (And yes, he totally put together this outfit on his own.) I mean:  hello layers, hello overcoat, hello fedora, hello awesome new sneakers, and hello cool watch. 😀 😀 😀

Let’s have one last shot of Sam, shall we? You’re welcome.

And no worries, I’ll be back tomorrow with more details of the outfit that I wore on our anniversary outing.
