Teal coat + all black outfit + new earrings

I have been LOVING my new teal overcoat, especially when paired with black. Today’s outfit is pretty basic and simple, punched up with the bright color of the coat and the chevron pattern on the scarf.

Below, the full outfit with the coat on.

And now a look at the outfit underneath. Black flats, leggings, a-line skirt, and cardigan — super basic and super comfortable.

The accessories, the chevron scarf and the rosette earrings, are both gifts from my friend and fellow librarian Stephanie — you most recently saw Stephanie here in this SIA round-up post! The earrings are from Rose Pedals Jewelry, made from recycled rubber and inner tubes — how cool is that?!

The backdrop is one seen on the top level of the Tacoma Dome parking garage. I’m glad we got another batch of photos here, as the parking structure is about to undergo a year (at least) of construction.

And below, a special series of outtakes from our quick photoshoot. It was a (rare!) sunny winter day, so Sam had fun playing with shadows, including his own! The photos below were taken in sequence, starting with my wave at Sam, his wave back, and then my blowing him kisses. After 21+ years together, we still crack each other up! ♥

SIA interpretation: Roots

It’s time for my interpretation of the final Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge for 2017! For this style challenge, SIA co-founder Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey chose the inspiration artwork.

The inspiration:

Salazar picked an amazing photo from a series called “Roots” by Spanish photographer Miguel Vallinas, a series which depicts people in outfits with flowers for their heads. Salazar was drawn to the series for its striking — and stylish! — effect, and you can learn more about the meaning of the series here in this article.

There are a lot of photos in the series, which you can see more of here, but Salazar chose the “Number 24” photo, a combo that includes a blue gingham shirt, a long cardigan, and a head of purple-colored flowers, all against a black backdrop. In the collage below is a detail from the inspiration photo, but you can see the full photo here.

Interpretation:

I recreated the outfit pretty closely but added a twist when it came to the flowers in the inspiration photo. I also wore a denim skirt instead of jeans, and an overcoat instead of a long cardigan. All the major colors are there: beige, blue, purple, green, and denim.

I brought in the floral in a subtle way through my cloisonné earrings, which also brought in the black and green tones. (The purple tones of the flowers are represented in my purple sweater vest.) You can’t see the earrings too well in the full outfit photos, so I included some closeups below. (You’ve also seen these earrings before on the blog here, here, and here.)

The black painted wall as the backdrop came out looking more grey, due to the foggy weather. But that’s what I was going for, a black background. The blue of my gingham button-front shirt and my tights really pops, right?

And even though it was foggy, I wore my sunglasses for our quick photo shoot in order to sort of “hide” my face — a little nod to the flowers that substitute for the head in the inspiration photo!

By the way, if you’re wondering if this outfit looks familiar, it’s because it’s basically a mash-up of two previous outfits, as you can see below:

Monthly budget adventures (August 2017)

It’s time to see what my monthly clothing budget adventures were for this month!

Replacements

When we went on a recent shopping trip to Kohl’s to replace a few of his items, I also was able to replace a couple of items of my own this month, including a new tan-and-black purse to replace my old Christian Siriano for Payless tote bag, seen here. And it came with a fun ladybug tag — I have a thing for ladybugs! 😀 I also was able to replace my older pair of navy opaque tights.

  • Navy tights, Simply Vera Very Wang for Kohl’s {exact}:  paid $11 (original price $16, 30% off coupon)

Shopping local

We went shopping at local stores on my birthday, where I picked up a lovely pair of painted resin earrings. They reminded me of the “Put a bird on it!” saying from Portlandia. 🙂

Also on my birthday, I picked up a black sun hat at a local resale boutique, Megs & Mo.

And on Sam’s birthday, we enjoyed a local street fair, where I spied this colorful cotton tunic. It will go very nice with leggings and skinny jeans, I think!

Chance find

While we were out and about a couple of weekends ago, Sam discovered this lilac beaded necklace in a tree. (Yes, in a tree.) So he took it down, and I added a new necklace to my collection by chance!

Donations

I also went through my closet recently, in order to identify some items to replace, as well as a few pieces that no longer fit. That included, as seen below:

Gifts

As I highlighted earlier this week, a friend gifted me this gorgeous pair of cognac-colored Lucchese cowboy boots!

Early birthday present | Audrey Hepburn hoop earrings

The poll is open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from June — thanks in advance!

My birthday’s in August, but my mom recently gifted me an early birthday present:  Smithsonian Museum Store’s reproductions of the classic ’50s hoop earrings in Audrey Hepburn’s personal collection. Audrey Hepburn wore these earrings in the classic 1954 film Sabrina — and frequently in real life, too.

And if you follow me via Pinterest, then this will explain my new Pinterest board filled with style inspiration for this classic style of hoop earrings. This was a popular style in the 1950s, worn by not only Hepburn but also by Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, and Brigitte Bardot, among others. The first Barbie dolls also had this same style of hoop earrings!

And how beautiful is this pink leatherette gift box?! It also comes with an additional card explaining the Smithsonian’s collection of reproducing classic pieces of Audrey Hepburn’s jewelry, as well as a little card, seen below, with an inspirational Audrey Hepburn quote. They made these earring replications with the help of Hepburn’s two sons. Amazing!

The pierced versions of these earrings were sold out, so my mom went ahead and got the clip-on versions. The gold pair is lighter than the silver pair, even though it’s slightly larger in size. I will most likely get the clip-on earrings converted to pierced versions, but for the meantime, I’m trying them out as is.

So beautiful! And I think you will be seeing more Audrey Hepburn-inspired outfits this summer… stay tuned! 😀

You can also revisit an Audrey Hepburn-inspired casual summer outfit here and also here. Her style — both clothes AND jewelry — is so timeless and classic!

Silk tunic + vintage earrings

I mentioned in last week’s budget post that my good friend and fellow librarian Stephanie had gifted me these vintage Native American earrings… I did not hesitate to wear them immediately! As in, the day after she gave them to me, and to a brunch outing during our recent girls’ weekend.

I also wore this outfit to work the next week, for a more casual “behind the scenes” day (i.e. no teaching). So instead of a “work to weekend” outfit, this is a “weekend to work” outfit. 🙂

I started with the earrings, and then pulled out this printed silk Anthropologie tunic that I fashion-swapped a few years ago, because I thought the turquoise of the earrings paired well with the teal color in the tunic. I also paired my brown cardigan and brown leggings with the tunic to echo the wood bits in the earrings.

This was a perfect outfit for a brunch, as the looser tunic style and leggings, which have a wide stretchy waistband, meant comfort for eating. I do not sacrifice practicality and comfort for the sake of style!

The backdrop is of a water collection tank outside the Tacoma Dome station, which includes free parking as well as access to the free light rail system that goes into downtown Tacoma. I thought it would make for a fun backdrop, and another way to highlight our city. Y’all know I really like to get outfit photos while we’re out and about, if at all possible, to show how I wear my outfits in real life.
