Monthly budget adventures (August 2017)

It’s time to see what my monthly clothing budget adventures were for this month!

Replacements

When we went on a recent shopping trip to Kohl’s to replace a few of his items, I also was able to replace a couple of items of my own this month, including a new tan-and-black purse to replace my old Christian Siriano for Payless tote bag, seen here. And it came with a fun ladybug tag — I have a thing for ladybugs! ūüėÄ I also was able to replace my older pair of navy opaque tights.

  • Navy tights, Simply Vera Very Wang for Kohl’s {exact}: ¬†paid $11 (original price $16, 30% off coupon)

Shopping local

We went shopping at local stores on my birthday, where I picked up a lovely pair of painted resin earrings. They reminded me of the “Put a bird on it!” saying from Portlandia. ūüôā

Also on my birthday, I picked up a black sun hat at a local resale boutique, Megs & Mo.

And on Sam’s birthday, we enjoyed a local street fair, where I spied this colorful cotton tunic. It will go very nice with leggings and skinny jeans, I think!

Chance find

While we were out and about a couple of weekends ago, Sam discovered this lilac beaded necklace in a tree. (Yes, in a tree.) So he took it down, and I added a new necklace to my collection by chance!

Donations

I also went through my closet recently, in order to identify some items to replace, as well as a few pieces that no longer fit. That included, as seen below:

As I highlighted earlier this week, a friend gifted me this gorgeous pair of cognac-colored Lucchese cowboy boots!

Early birthday present | Audrey Hepburn hoop earrings

The poll is open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from June — thanks in advance!

My birthday’s in August, but my mom recently gifted me an early birthday present: ¬†Smithsonian Museum Store’s reproductions of the classic ’50s hoop earrings in Audrey Hepburn’s personal collection. Audrey Hepburn wore these earrings in the classic 1954 film Sabrina¬†— and frequently in real life, too.

And if you follow me via Pinterest, then this will explain my new Pinterest board filled with style inspiration for this classic style of hoop earrings. This was a popular style in the 1950s, worn by not only Hepburn but also by Marilyn Monroe, Sophia Loren, and Brigitte Bardot, among others. The first Barbie dolls also had this same style of hoop earrings!

And how beautiful is this pink leatherette gift box?! It also comes with an additional card explaining the Smithsonian’s collection of reproducing classic pieces of Audrey Hepburn’s jewelry, as well as a little card, seen below, with an inspirational Audrey Hepburn quote. They made these earring replications with the help of Hepburn’s two sons. Amazing!

The pierced versions of these earrings were sold out, so my mom went ahead and got the clip-on versions. The gold pair is lighter than the silver pair, even though it’s slightly larger in size. I will most likely get the clip-on earrings converted to pierced versions, but for the meantime, I’m trying them out as is.

So beautiful! And I think you will be seeing more Audrey Hepburn-inspired outfits this summer… stay tuned! ūüėÄ

You can also revisit an Audrey Hepburn-inspired casual summer outfit here¬†and also here. Her style — both clothes AND jewelry — is so timeless and classic!

Silk tunic + vintage earrings

I mentioned in last week’s¬†budget post that my good friend and fellow librarian Stephanie had gifted me these vintage Native American earrings… I did not hesitate to wear them immediately! As in, the day after she gave them to me, and to a brunch outing during our recent girls’ weekend.

I also wore this outfit to work the next week, for a more casual “behind the scenes” day (i.e. no teaching). So instead of a “work to weekend” outfit, this is a “weekend to work” outfit. ūüôā

I started with the earrings, and then pulled out this printed silk Anthropologie tunic that I fashion-swapped a few years ago, because I thought the turquoise of the earrings paired well with the teal color in the tunic. I also paired my brown cardigan and brown leggings with the tunic to echo the wood bits in the earrings.

This was a perfect outfit for a brunch, as the looser tunic style and leggings, which have a wide stretchy waistband, meant comfort for eating. I do not sacrifice practicality and comfort for the sake of style!

The backdrop is of a water collection tank outside the Tacoma Dome station, which includes¬†free parking as well as access to¬†the free light rail system that goes into downtown Tacoma. I thought it would make for a fun backdrop, and another way to highlight our city. Y’all know I really like¬†to get outfit photos while we’re out and about, if at all possible, to show how I wear my outfits in real life.

Statement scarf + Fabulous Friday co-host link-up

Today, I’m so excited to be co-hosting the Fabulous Friday link-up with Jennie from A Pocketful of Polka Dots, one of my favorite style bloggers! (I’ve been a reader of her blog for a long time — check my Blog Love roll.) Scroll down to the end of this outfit post for all the link-up details!

But first, a bit about my outfit, which is all about the accessories. I layered my black knit sleeveless dress over a black knit tee and black opaque tights in order to have a blank, er, black canvas for my geometric-print scarf and burgundy booties. I felt great in this outfit!

This gorgeous scarf, with its black, burgundy, and bits of gold threading, was a gift from my husband, Sam, when he took a college trip to Turkey. My wine-colored lipstick played off both my scarf and my ankle booties.

And since the print on the scarf is geometric, I also went with my geometric bronze earrings, a gift from my good friend and fellow librarian Stephanie.

What goes into choosing photos for an outfit post? It’s mostly about choosing photos that highlight the outfit or details of the outfit¬†(that’s the point of a style blog, right?!). But sometimes, I choose a photo for a purely arbitrary reason, like¬†because I like the way my hair looks in that particular photo. See examples below. ūüėČ

Meet your host for Fabulous Friday, Jennie of A Pocketful of Polka Dots.

‚ąľ Hey y’all, I’m Jennie and I am a 47-year-old frugal fashionista! I am mom to two wonderful (and handsome!) sons and one very spoiled Pomeranian. After spending most of my life in black and boring clothes, I now enjoy trying new trends, am a confessed shoeaholic, believe life is too short for boring hair, and never met a polka dot I didn’t like. I am also an avid photographer, reader of Jane Austen, Paleo/Primal enthusiast, and lover of DIY. You can follow me here ‚ąľ

Each week, both Jennie and that week’s co-host choose a personal favorite outfit from last week’s link-up. My favorite this past week was¬†from Cindy, aka PRIIINCESSS from the I Am Priiincesss blog, who looks so fabulous and fresh in her “little white dress.”

Remixing my novelty print skirt

Another week, another opportunity to remix this novelty print skirt featuring cats and books! The first time I wore this skirt, I wore it with a black cardigan and my Fluevog heels, and the second time, I wore it with a grey cardigan, over-the-knee socks, and patent leather brogues.

This time, no cardigans! Instead, I layered my chambray shirt over a black turtleneck, and then tucked both into my skirt. Since the waist on this skirt is a bit big (the skirt is cotton, so a smaller size would have been too small), I cinched in my waist with a black skinny belt to keep everything secure. I also paired the skirt with my black flat-heeled boots for a more casual look overall.

On the day I wore this outfit, a co-worker remarked that she was enjoying seeing how I kept remixing this skirt. ūüôā

And yes, these are the black version of the grey over-the-knee socks I previously wore with this cat-and-books skirt. They look totally different scrunched down and just peeking over my tall black boots. Cute and comfy!

I also remixed my new black pearl earrings, c/o Pearl & Clasp. (Read my review of these earrings here.)
