SIA interpretation: Sing Street

It’s time for my Style Imitating Art (SIA) interpretation! This week’s inspiration artwork was chosen by SIA co-founder Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey, and she chose the bright and colorful poster for Sing Street, which was one of her favorite movies this past year.

My interpretation

I think this is the first time to feature this infinity scarf I thrifted back in December — and what better way to feature this chevron-print scarf of multiple neon colors than with an ’80s-inspired challenge?! And the background color of this part of the fence matches up almost perfectly with the background color of the movie poster! 😀

I wanted the scarf to be the focus of the look, so I paired it with an outfit of neutrals that also fit in with the movie poster.

Yep, I’m wearing denim on denim:  black skinny jeans and a dark-wash denim jacket. But it works because the colors and washes are different — but no ’80s acid wash! And no “Canadian tux” here! 😉

Multi-colored backdrop

The backdrop is a fence that’s been painted in multiple colors. (I believe it’s a fence that encircles a local child’s day care or playground.) I spied the fence a few weeks ago and thought at the time it might make a good backdrop for future photos. Multi-colored scarf, multi-colored fence — and just perfect for the movie poster inspiration! 🙂

Still time to participate in SIA!

Everyone — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! — is welcome to participate. Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also just fine — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator, Salazar, at 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by tonight Monday, Feb. 27th. Salazar will be traveling, so she will then post the SIA round-up on her blog, 14 Shades of Grey, on Wednesday, March 1st.

Can’t wait to see the round-up!

And I’ll be back next Monday to choose the next SIA challenge… stay tuned 🙂

Remixing hearts + shades of red

Last week, I highlighted past fall favorite outfits I would wear again… which is basically what I did with this outfit. This is essentially the same outfit, only with the “completer piece” changed from a light blue cardigan, when I wore it last fall, to a denim jacket this fall. I also changed up the placement of the red fabric belt that came with this eShakti dress.

But those small differences make an impact. My 2015 outfit looks more 1950s retro, with the belted cardigan, while my denim jacket topper this fall helps make my outfit look more modern. Either way, I love this outfit and this heart-print dress!

And the house behind me in the photos? Yep, it’s our new home in Tacoma! ♥

Last time, I wore this belt with the cut-out to the side. This time, I placed the cut-out front and center. I liked that from afar, it looks like banding on the waist of the dress!

I really liked how all the colors came together in this outfit, even with all the different shades of red. I am mixing together bright red (belt), a bright burgundy (coat), a slightly warmer burgundy (tote bag), and a brownish burgundy (tights). Yet it all looks cohesive. Why? I think it comes down to the print of the dress, which has both bright red and burgundy shades in it. Plus, everything else is a neutral, including the white background of the dress, my bronze heels, and my denim jacket.

SIA interpretation: The Chocolate Girl

It’s time for my SIA interpretation! It was Salazar‘s turn to curate, and she chose a classic:  The Chocolate Girl, ca. 1743-44, by Swiss artist Jean-Étienne Liotard. The muted colors and mix of textures in the painting are lovely.

My starting point was my pleated cotton skirt in shades of bronze, white, and light blue. This skirt hasn’t been on the blog that often, seen here, here, and here, but I’ve had it for years. I added a light denim jacket, plain white tee, and my porcelain Wedgwood pendant necklace.

We’ve taken photos at various places outside our new home, but it felt like good timing to take some photos inside. Plus, my blogger pal Erin at Loop Looks — and SIA co-host! — has asked for some pics inside the house, so we took these photos in our living room. (Our couch is usually in front of this picture window, but we moved it forward for a few pics.)

Above is a closeup of my skirt with its bronze ribbon detailing, plus a closeup of the Wedgwood porcelain pendant that my mom got in England decades ago — it’s so delicate and pretty!

Last week, I mentioned recognizing The Chocolate Girl painting from the cover of Longbourn. So OF COURSE I had to incorporate my copy of the book into the photos, along with a yellow tea cup (a birthday gift from Portland friends) and a porcelain dish for chocolate sweets (from Scotland, a gift from Sam’s great-aunt). The green metal tray is one we picked up years ago in Texas, and it’s usually in the center of our dining table. I thought it was a nice touch to bring it into the photo shoot in order to echo the tray the maid is carrying in the inspiration painting.

Lastly, below are some photos of me on our tufted couch, which is the newest addition to our living room. (It’s hard to find a smaller-scale sofa!) Our cat Ibsen was determined to join in on the photo shoot. (I think he was a little jealous of all the attention Brontë got last month in this SIA interpretation post.)

So there is still time to participate in SIA challenges! It’s easy, and bloggers and non-bloggers are encouraged to join in. All you need to do is take a picture of an outfit inspired by this week’s art piece — flat lays and selfies are just fine, as well — and send to this week’s curator, Salazar @ 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com, by tonight. Salazar will post the round-up tomorrow on her blog, 14 Shades of Grey.

Mixing red + orange together for fall

I wore this outfit during new faculty orientation week at my new college. I wanted to look pulled-together but also a bit casual. And obviously, I wanted to represent my area, the library, in a positive way!

I started with my red knit dress — a comfortable and more casual choice — and layered my dark denim jacket — also casual — over it. To look more pulled-together and finish off the outfit, I then chose my dark denim peep-toe wedges and my orange patterned scarf.

The red and orange together is also a great combination as we transition to autumn!

The final finishing touch? My reddish orange lip stain, Revlon Colorburst Balm Stain in “Adore.”

It’s been awhile since I’ve worn these peep-toe wedges, and I had forgotten how comfortable they are! So cushy, particularly around the peep-toe detail. The Dexter line from Payless never fails to be comfortable.

I wore this outfit the second day of new faculty orientation (here’s what I wore the first day), and I smiled when a new colleague commented, “Oh! I didn’t realize yesterday that you were so tall!” 😀

The Umbrellas of Tacoma

I’ve been scouting out interesting sights and public art around town for possible photo ops (and future SIA challenges?), and when I discovered the “Umbrella Wall” mural in the Dome District here in Tacoma (near the “Tacoma Dome” stadium), my eyes lit up. Yessssss!

This simple mural of dozens of colorful umbrellas is so cheery and whimsical — and oh-so-perfect for the rainy Pacific Northwest! Of course, we happened to take photos there on a perfectly sunny summer day. I dressed in all solid colors — a rarity these days — no prints or patterns! Unless you count my purse. 😉

The “Umbrella Wall” mural is part of the Tacoma Mural Project, which began in 2010; this mural was painted in 2012. (The mural was also vandalized last year — such a shame! — but they’ve since cleaned it up, although you can still see bits of the defacing up close.) There is a LOT of public art here in Tacoma, as well as local government support for public art initiatives, which is awesome. Individually and collectively, the art really highlights the character and diversity of the city and each neighborhood.

You can tell I had a LOT of fun posing for pictures against this cheerful backdrop! 😀

In keeping with the whimsical nature of the mural backdrop, I also went for whimsy with my accessories, choosing dangly earrings handmade by my paternal grandmother and a handbag made from a vintage book cover. My bright pink cork wedges coordinate with my bright pink blouse (and with my lip stain!).

I don’t think I’ve showcased this vintage book cover purse before on the blog. At a librarian conference years ago in Wisconsin, I won both this “Beach Club” book cover purse and this “Candid Confessions” book cover purse, last seen here, in a prize raffle.

I also brought along my dark denim jacket, for colder indoor air conditioning. I like how the dark denim also adds to the colorblocking theme. And even though it’s all colorblocking — which tends to visually “chop up” the body — I did actually feel “long ‘n’ lean” in this outfit. This was helped, of course, by the height of these platform wedges. 😉

Gotta say, I am LOVING Tacoma and our first summer here. The different places we’ve been to and taken photos thus far have also made for really dynamic photos and posts. Hope y’all are enjoying Tacoma, as well!
