Work to weekend | Jane Austen tee

I’ve worn my Jane Austen feminism tee a few times already since buying it in February, but I hadn’t featured it on the blog — until now!

And you get a two-fer, with a “work to weekend” post. If I have a Friday work day that doesn’t involve teaching, I often wear a more casual outfit, when I then remix for the weekend.

For work:

The tee features a quote from Pride and Prejudice, in which Lizzy Bennet is admonished as being an “obstinate, headstrong girl!” — which Lizzy turns around to be a compliment, of course. As I would, too. 😀

For the weekend:

And above are the common elements I kept for the weekend look. I remixed the tee, the dark denim jacket, the geometric-print canvas flats, and my colorful earrings. The only piece I changed was the trousers I wore for work, which I switched out for light grey jeans on the weekend. I also changed out my bag.

Note:  I forgot to put in my earrings until after we took photos. But I did wear them with this outfit! 🙂

And I cheered out loud when I realized that the perfect finishing touch for my weekend variation of this outfit would be my new Pride and Prejudice tote bag. Perfect!

SIA interpretation: Garden Center roses

SIA inspiration pick:

It’s time for my interpretation for this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, this time chosen by Erin @ Loop Looks. She has posted before on her blog about her friend Annabelle’s job at Garden Center Services, an organization that provides services and job training for adults with physical and intellectual disabilities. One of their programs is called GrowArts, and its goal is to have the adults they serve create art that they then sell. For SIA this week Erin chose one of the pieces they have for sale, a striking painting of roses.

My interpretation:

Librarian for Life + Style | Garden center SIA collage

My very first idea was to wear my green, rose-print scarf. I wanted the focus to be more on the rose print, so I went the green-and-tan color scheme route, rather than pulling focus with a bright red clothing item. (But I did add in a touch of red with the ladybug on my brooch.)

The SIA painting is part of the Garden Center Services project, so I wanted to stick with that theme by taking photos in a local community garden. We took photos in the Dometop Community Garden, which is right beside the Rogers children’s park and overlooks a restored 1907 school building.

Can you tell I was ready for spring?! You might say I was so ready, I was jumping for joy… 😉

I mixed in more florals with my rose earring studs and my floral clutch. More pattern-mixing with multiple kinds of roses! 😀

By the way, this clutch is pretty roomy! I can fit in my wallet, sunglasses case, tissues, chapstick, and my cell phone, with room to spare. PLUS this clutch is pattern-mixing all on its own, with an interior of striped fabric! I also love that the external fabric is a scuba-like material.

SIA interpretation: Sing Street

It’s time for my Style Imitating Art (SIA) interpretation! This week’s inspiration artwork was chosen by SIA co-founder Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey, and she chose the bright and colorful poster for Sing Street, which was one of her favorite movies this past year.

My interpretation

I think this is the first time to feature this infinity scarf I thrifted back in December — and what better way to feature this chevron-print scarf of multiple neon colors than with an ’80s-inspired challenge?! And the background color of this part of the fence matches up almost perfectly with the background color of the movie poster! 😀

Librarian for Life + Style | Collage for my Sing Street SIA interpretation

I wanted the scarf to be the focus of the look, so I paired it with an outfit of neutrals that also fit in with the movie poster.

Yep, I’m wearing denim on denim:  black skinny jeans and a dark-wash denim jacket. But it works because the colors and washes are different — but no ’80s acid wash! And no “Canadian tux” here! 😉

Multi-colored backdrop

The backdrop is a fence that’s been painted in multiple colors. (I believe it’s a fence that encircles a local child’s day care or playground.) I spied the fence a few weeks ago and thought at the time it might make a good backdrop for future photos. Multi-colored scarf, multi-colored fence — and just perfect for the movie poster inspiration! 🙂

Remixing hearts + shades of red

Last week, I highlighted past fall favorite outfits I would wear again… which is basically what I did with this outfit. This is essentially the same outfit, only with the “completer piece” changed from a light blue cardigan, when I wore it last fall, to a denim jacket this fall. I also changed up the placement of the red fabric belt that came with this eShakti dress.

But those small differences make an impact. My 2015 outfit looks more 1950s retro, with the belted cardigan, while my denim jacket topper this fall helps make my outfit look more modern. Either way, I love this outfit and this heart-print dress!

And the house behind me in the photos? Yep, it’s our new home in Tacoma! ♥

Last time, I wore this belt with the cut-out to the side. This time, I placed the cut-out front and center. I liked that from afar, it looks like banding on the waist of the dress!

I really liked how all the colors came together in this outfit, even with all the different shades of red. I am mixing together bright red (belt), a bright burgundy (coat), a slightly warmer burgundy (tote bag), and a brownish burgundy (tights). Yet it all looks cohesive. Why? I think it comes down to the print of the dress, which has both bright red and burgundy shades in it. Plus, everything else is a neutral, including the white background of the dress, my bronze heels, and my denim jacket.

SIA interpretation: The Chocolate Girl

It’s time for my SIA interpretation! It was Salazar‘s turn to curate, and she chose a classic:  The Chocolate Girl, ca. 1743-44, by Swiss artist Jean-Étienne Liotard. The muted colors and mix of textures in the painting are lovely.

My starting point was my pleated cotton skirt in shades of bronze, white, and light blue. This skirt hasn’t been on the blog that often, seen here, here, and here, but I’ve had it for years. I added a light denim jacket, plain white tee, and my porcelain Wedgwood pendant necklace.

We’ve taken photos at various places outside our new home, but it felt like good timing to take some photos inside. Plus, my blogger pal Erin at Loop Looks — and SIA co-host! — has asked for some pics inside the house, so we took these photos in our living room. (Our couch is usually in front of this picture window, but we moved it forward for a few pics.)

Above is a closeup of my skirt with its bronze ribbon detailing, plus a closeup of the Wedgwood porcelain pendant that my mom got in England decades ago — it’s so delicate and pretty!

Last week, I mentioned recognizing The Chocolate Girl painting from the cover of Longbourn. So OF COURSE I had to incorporate my copy of the book into the photos, along with a yellow tea cup (a birthday gift from Portland friends) and a porcelain dish for chocolate sweets (from Scotland, a gift from Sam’s great-aunt). The green metal tray is one we picked up years ago in Texas, and it’s usually in the center of our dining table. I thought it was a nice touch to bring it into the photo shoot in order to echo the tray the maid is carrying in the inspiration painting.

Lastly, below are some photos of me on our tufted couch, which is the newest addition to our living room. (It’s hard to find a smaller-scale sofa!) Our cat Ibsen was determined to join in on the photo shoot. (I think he was a little jealous of all the attention Brontë got last month in this SIA interpretation post.)

So there is still time to participate in SIA challenges! It’s easy, and bloggers and non-bloggers are encouraged to join in. All you need to do is take a picture of an outfit inspired by this week’s art piece — flat lays and selfies are just fine, as well — and send to this week’s curator, Salazar @ 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com, by tonight. Salazar will post the round-up tomorrow on her blog, 14 Shades of Grey.
