What I wore to a local street fair | Dashiki bright + colorful

I got this bright and colorful dashiki a year ago at a local street fair, so it felt like the perfect item to wear to this year’s street fair! Also, a cotton dashiki or tunic is a VERY good idea to wear to any summer festival, as it is loose-fitting and in a breathable fabric.

Also, I have learned that a crossbody bag is the perfect bag for these kinds of festivals, as I don’t have to worry about it as we walk around. Plus, it keeps both my hands free for all the stuff you accumulate at a street fair (flyers, bags, sno cones, etc.). 😉

Because it was hot that day, I wore my wide-brimmed black sunhat, which I thrifted at a local resale shop last summer. Sam said the hat gave me “flair.” 😀

You’ve seen this sun hat before, in an SIA post a few weeks ago, but it looks totally different today paired with this more casual outfit. I love the hat’s bendable rim — and this EXACT sun hat is still available!

I started out the day wearing my black metal hoop earrings, which you’ve seen several times before, like here and here. But during the street fair, I picked up these fabulous circle earrings made out of wood. In fact, I bought these earrings from the same African businesswoman, who is sales director for Kijiji Village Craft, that I bought the dashiki from last year! I loved them so much that I decided to wear them then and there. This summer, I have been all about the lightweight statement earrings!

The vibrant backdrop is a local grocer and convenience store that is painted turquoise with bright pink window trim. I’ve been wanting to take photos against this backdrop for awhile now, so it all turned out perfectly to pair a brightly colored backdrop with a brightly colored tunic! 😀

Simple + neutral with a red crossbody bag

I loved this outfit so much — and the photo location! — that this is a warning that this post is more photo-laden than usual.

The backdrop was a total accident, albeit a happy one. It’s a branch-covered wall by a public parking space in downtown Tacoma. While we were out and about a few weeks ago (yes, it took a while to get this outfit up on the blog), we parked in this parking lot for the first time. As we got out of the car, I saw the wall and went, “Huh. That might be a good place to take pictures.” And it was! I didn’t realize how good this backdrop would be until Sam kept saying, “Wow!” while he taking photos, about how dynamic the branches looked in photos.

But now about the outfit! It’s SO SIMPLE yet low-key dynamic on its own, I suppose. I paired a basic white cardigan with black skinny jeans and a tan coat. I then decided to make myself feel a bit more pepped-up with red lipstick… which led to the red crossbody bag. And the gold trim on the red crossbody bag led me to my classic gold hoop earrings (reproductions of Audrey Hepburn’s own earrings in Sabrina, a birthday gift last year).

Classic, simple pieces that just work. Every. Single. Time.

These textured espadrille slip-ons were the last things I grabbed. I could have easily gone for my classic black ballet flats, or my leopard print flats, or even my striped slip-on sneakers, which would all have looked just fine. But I chose these espadrille slip-ons because the colors, tan and black, just seemed to tie the color-blocked nature of my outfit together. And they felt a bit unexpected amidst all the classic pieces. It just worked for me! 🙂

I had to darken the photo above a bit to get a better look at these gold hoop earrings, which are actually clip-ons. Being such a classic design, these earrings are a fun and easy way to add some easy glamor to an everyday kind of outfit.

Pattern-mixing neutrals | Gingham + animal print

What, me, pattern-mix? SHOCKING. 😉

I wore this outfit for a casual coffee meet-up with a fellow librarian in the region, but I still wanted to look professional. Can’t go wrong with a classic black and red and leopard print combo!

Since I didn’t have to go to work this day, I could get away with this smaller crossbody bag. And it’s amazing how much this crossbody bag and my coordinating red lipstick helped elevate this simple look!

Stripes and nautical with pops of red

Today’s outfit is one I wore out on the weekend (coffee date with the hubby!), and it was inspired by multiple similar combos pinned on my “Casual inspiration” Pinterest board, including this pin, this pin, and this pin. Pattern-mixing along with a red, white + blue color scheme? Right up my alley!

We enjoyed one of those chilly but bright winter days — a rarity to enjoy actual sunshine during February up here in the Pacific Northwest! We made the most of it. 🙂

Also, the picture below with my scarf enjoying the breeze just cracked me up!

There are subtle bits of a nautical theme in my outfit, including my rope knot earrings, the chain on the crossbody purse, as well as my vintage scarf featuring Dutch tiles (some of the tiles include ships).

I chose my grey overcoat to tie in with my grey-striped tee and grey ankle booties, but after-the-fact, I also thought it fun that the coat has military touches with the button details. Also ties in with the nautical elements!

If you’re a longtime reader (thank you), then you’ll now I love these leather-and-suede grey booties. But I think this is the first time I’ve featured them with wider-leg bottoms. I’ve always worn them with skinny jeans or pants before, to show off more of the boots themselves. But they’re comfortable to wear — and super practical with their rubber soles — so it’s good to use more opportunities to wear them.

The backdrop, by the way, is the imaginatively named “East 34th Street Bridge,” located — you guessed it! — along East 34th Street in Tacoma. There are two halves to the bridge, one newer half and one older half. This is the older half, from when the bridge was originally built in 1937, and it has those special kinds of details like the picturesque ledges and carved-out arches. Because the bridge overlooks a lot of trees in a gulch, I want to take outfit photos on this bridge in every season, to showcase how the seasons change here in Tacoma. What do y’all think?

Then and now: Teal tee and vintage skirt remixed

Almost exactly three years ago, I paired together a basic teal tee and my mom’s vintage skirt from Thailand, along with a vintage statement necklace. This summer, I again reached for the teal tee and vintage skirt, this time remixing the outfit with statement earrings.

I love the teal and brown together and the more casual vibe this go-round. Perhaps that also comes from untucking the tee?

It’s also appropriate — and unplanned, I promise! — that I wore this vintage skirt of my mom’s from Thailand along with dangly earrings I got from a more recent trip to Thailand ON MY WAY to eat lunch at a Thai restaurant. Style synergy, y’all. 😉

The backdrop is a transit stop in the Goose Hollow neighborhood of Portland, where all the benches are in the shapes of punctuation marks. So fun!
