Inspired by Ocean’s Eight | Tweed vest + necktie

A quick reminder that the poll is open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from October — thanks in advance!

Today’s outfit is one I’ve actually worn twice, and it was inspired by Cate Blanchett’s wardrobe in the fiercely female film, Ocean’s 8, and you can read more about the hallmarks of her costumes here. I am no stranger to remixing menswear and menswear-inspired pieces, so I was immediately drawn to how Cate Blanchett’s character, Lou, effortlessly wears vests, suits, and skinny ties like necklaces.

So to capture that fierce AF spirit, I layered my racerback vest over a purple button-front and wide-leg trousers. I also added my patent leather burgundy brogues, for an extra menswear-inspired touch.

My favorite part about this look was the skinny tie that I borrowed from my husband. I loved how it peeked out of my shirt! I didn’t bother getting the tie “perfect,” as the unfussy and tousled look is part of Lou’s essence as a character.

I also layered on chunky wooden jewelry, as Lou also wears a lot of jewelry in Ocean’s 8. I love the play off gender roles by mixing chunky jewelry with a skinny tie! 😀

SIA interpretation: Hindu painting

It’s time for my interpretation for this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge!

Inspiration artwork:

I chose this beautiful Hindu (Rajput) painting of a “Melancholy Courtesan,” circa 1750s. This painting is part of the Met’s public domain digital art collection, and you can read more here about  the history of this style of painting.

Interpretation:

I was drawn to the painting mainly because of the mix of colors and subtle patterns together. I also did NOT want to go down the cultural appropriation route, so I liked the idea of a modern look.

My pink + burgundy + navy patterned ankle pants felt like the perfect starting point. I added more texture with the navy cable-knit sweater, and the burgundy cargo vest also added more burgundy to the mix while also feeling more modern. I wore my lapis lazuli earring studs, and the bronze-y zipper and buttons on the vest also made a (slight) nod to the jewelry in the inspiration painting (minus any possible cultural appropriation).

Why the burgundy brogues? I could have gone with my champagne-colored flats, as seen here, which would have been right at home with this inspiration painting. But I went with the patent leather burgundy brogues because (a) the weather was off-and-on rainy, and I am nothing if not practical, and (b) it’s a painting of a courtesan, and I liked the idea of wearing a masculine-inspired piece of clothing to contrast with this painting of a very feminine subject and object.

I wore this outfit to get my hair trimmed even shorter, again not conforming to historically traditional ideals of feminine beauty. Gotta admit, I get a lot of personal joy out of being subtly and sartorially subversive. 😉

There is still time to participate in SIA!

Everyone is welcome to participate — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also welcome — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator (me!) at librarianforlifestyle@gmail.com, by tomorrow, Tuesday, April 24th, 10 p.m. U.S. Pacific Standard Time, to be included in the round-up on my blog

See y’all on Wednesday for the round-up!

First SIA interpretation of 2018

It’s time for my interpretation for a new Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, the first of 2018! I’m super excited for this first challenge, as I chose an inspiration painting by a local tattoo artist, Bismark Pinera. You can also see more of his tattoo artwork here on his Instagram profile.

This painting also graced the cover of a newly published regional literary compilation, Creative Colloquy Volume 4, available online here.

My starting points were the grey and teal/turquoise colors in the inspiration painting. I knew immediately that I wanted to wear my new teal overcoat (still available online in regular, petite, tall, and plus sizes — and on sale!), which I layered over light grey jeans and a darker grey tee. I pulled in the bits of red in the inspiration painting through my burgundy tote bag, lipstick, and dark burgundy patent leather brogues.

I also knew that I wanted to take pics that highlighted the natural beauty of the region, just like in the inspiration painting. So once again the vistas along the Ruston Way Waterfront proved fruitful, with its combination of sea, mountains, and trees.

And of course, for me, it’s all about the details! I wore my Washington state “Home” tee — a gift from my mom when we moved from Oregon to Washington state — as the inspiration painting has so many PNW details in it. My cloth belt has a diamond pattern on it that reminded me of the central diamond shape in the painting — that’s also the same reason I wore my copper drop earrings (you saw these before here in this post, albeit in a slightly different way!). I also wore a long brown pashmina scarf because I thought it would kind of mimic the long hair of the woman in the center of the painting. (Yes, I really do think of all these details.)

At the last minute, I thought about adding the patterned silk scarf that I recently got via an estate sale — I thought its pattern and colors would echo the overall vibe of the inspiration painting. I thought wearing the scarf around my neck would look too busy, so I looped the scarf around my tote bag instead.

And finally, I mentioned last week that I was inspired to choose this artwork because I attended the launch celebration of the newly published regional literary compilation, Creative Colloquy Volume 4, available online here, and the inspiration artwork is the cover of the new publication. (Creative Colloquy is a literary site and community here in Tacoma.) I have my own copy of this publication, so OF COURSE we had to take pics of me posing with the book.

Happy holidays with black + chambray + snowflakes

Merry Christmas, y’all! Today’s outfit post is an example of a subtle holiday outfit, thanks to the snowflake pin I wore on my blazer lapel. (And yes, I am off for the holidays, but I’ve got posts already lined up during the holidays.)

For this work outfit, I was inspired by Chrissy Teigen’s recent outfit of a chambray shirt with black leather skinny pants and lace-up boots. I never worry about doing an exact outfit replica, so I immediately converted the black leather pants into black skinny jeans in my mind, and the lace-up boots into my burgundy brogues. I also mentally changed her (covetous) black overcoat into my black blazer — I added metal hoops and my own black bag, and done! A cute work look that is still pretty casual and chill.

I felt like I needed a bit of something to jazz up all the black, so I came across this snowflake pin in my jewelry armoire, and thought it would make a nice addition. Plus, it helped make my outfit holiday-appropriate without being gimmicky.

Burgundy brogues + plaid shirtdress

I felt really great in today’s outfit, my white-and-grey plaid shirtdress, which I’ve worn before here with my grey ankle boots. This time, I wore the shirtdress with grey heather tights, a textured silver metallic belt, and burgundy patent leather brogues. It’s such a classic silhouette, this fit-and-flare shirtdress, but the details of the brogues and the metallic belt provide some unexpected details up close.

A fit-and-flare dress practically begs to be twirled in, right?! Right.

I wore my burgundy overcoat on this chilly fall day, which provided a fantastic pop of color to my outfit — and it also really does pop against the backdrop of orange-y fall foliage!

And last but not least, this is the fourth and final post in my (informal) series of taking pics along East 34th Street Bridge, a fun way to capture the seasons here in Tacoma. So here you go, fall foliage along East 34th Street Bridge in east Tacoma! See here for winter picshere for spring pics, and here for summer pics along this same bridge.
