Sam’s style | Tartan tie + brogues

Isn’t it time for some more of Sam’s style? The answer, of course, is ALWAYS. And it seems fitting that a day after I feature my dusty rose jeans, that I feature Sam’s “faded burgundy” trousers. Equality, y’all. ♥

My husband is a vegetarian, so we have to scout out non-leather shoes for him. These are brogues made from man-made materials, and I love the cognac color of these shoes. They also tie in with the (non-leather) cognac belt he’s wearing — and with his JORD wood watch!

And of course, Sam is no stranger to outtakes, either! 😉

SIA interpretation: Whistler watercolor

A note about my posting schedule

I wanted to let my readers know that I will be going back to a posting schedule of 3 posts a week, on a Monday-Wednesday-Friday schedule. This fall quarter is shaping up to be very busy — I will be teaching a credit course, and Sam has a new teaching schedule — and we need time to adjust to our new real-life daily schedule (not least of which for finding time to take photos during the work week).

I plan on continuing on co-hosting Style Imitating Art challenges, as well as my monthly clothing budget post and my outfit round-up post and reader poll. I will be discontinuing my monthly “everyday faves” series.

SIA inspiration:

And now, it’s time for my interpretation of this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, this round curated by SIA co-founder Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey.

Salazar has been scouting out a watercolor painting for awhile, and finally came across a watercolor sketch by James McNeill Whistler via the open content on the Metropolitan Museum of Art website and digital collections. This will be the third time we’ve featured a Whistler painting for SIA, but the first time with a watercolor. And the crowded street scene, all in neutrals, feels like an unusual subject for a watercolor — and perfect for the autumn season!

It took me awhile to come up with my outfit, but finally, I remembered my tan cotton skirt with a soft, watercolor-esque print in shades of neutrals. That was the starting point. And because the watercolor has more of tan & blue tones to me — rather than the lavender & grey tones of the title — I went with navy blue accents with my  navy cardigan and navy tights. My burgundy brogues were a practical choice, as well as a color choice that still fit the inspiration piece.

My tote bag — doctor’s bag? — was the final piece I added to the outfit. It FINALLY feels like fall around here, in all its drizzly and cool PNW glory — so I can use this gorgeous bag with its wool fabric sides. It fit in with the color scheme of my outfit (and the inspiration watercolor) but added its own cool texture and shape to the overall look.

I felt my outfit looked a little retro-inspired, with the combination of the full skirt + tights + brogues. It was a professional development day on campus — also known as in-service — and I got lots of compliments on my outfit from colleagues. 😀

And because it was cold and rainy, I got to wear my navy trench coat again!

Still time to participate in SIA:

Everyone — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! — is welcome to participate. Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also just fine — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator, Salazar, at 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by tonight. Salazar will then post the SIA round-up on her blog, 14 Shades of Grey, the next day.

Can’t wait to see what y’all are inspired to wear!

Sam’s style | Preppy kilt

It was sunshine-y but cool in that special PNW way, and Sam was FEELING the kilt this day. I did not mind at all.

I like that the top half of his outfit is a bit preppy, with the plaid button-front and sweater vest. And the bottom half is casual kilt style, with his utility kilt (or “utilikilt” — but I also sometimes use the terms “cargo kilt” and “hiking kilt”) and hiking socks.

And hello to Sam’s flowing locks! He usually wears his longer hair pulled back in a low ponytail, but today, he set the curls free. I am not AT ALL jealous of his curly hair (says the straight-haired lady… with a not-so-straight face). 😉

Details of Sam’s outfit:

  • Plaid button-front:  Hugo Boss, thrifted at local Tacoma shop, new
  • Sweater vest:  Kohl’s?, had for years
  • Utility kilt:  Highland Kilt Company, old
  • Hiking socks:  Fred Meyer, old
  • Brogues:  Payless, old

Happy Friday, y’all! If you’re in the mood for more kilt outfits — and who isn’t?! — be sure to check out Sam’s utilikilt here in this post, and the full Fraser tartan dress kilt here in this post.

Raspberry velvet, if you please

A quick note that the poll is open to vote for your favorite outfit from April — thanks in advance!

Like I mentioned in my most recent clothing budget post, I snagged this AWESOME velvet fedora at the iconic local men’s clothing store, Mr. Mac’s. When I got the hat home, I realized that it exactly matched my self-made obi-style belt made out of vintage ties. And that my new raspberry gingham shirt fit the color story coming together in my head… 🙂

I will most likely rewear this combo in the fall, but it’s been a very cold and rainy spring thus far. And it was a VERY comfortable outfit to wear, with my burgundy brogues.

This velvet (or velveteen?) fedora really does catch the light, doesn’t it? And yes, it was pouring down rain when we took these photos. (That explains the random spots all over the button-front shirt!) I also got quite a few compliments and questions about my tie belt during the day — it is a statement piece, isn’t it? 🙂

Grown-up school girl in knee socks + library card tote

As promised, here are more photos and details of what I wore on our anniversary outing this past weekend, when Sam and I both donned our JORD wood watches. Click here to view Sam’s outfit and closeups of his new JORD watch.

Plus, don’t forget to enter my giveaway for a $100 JORD e-gift code! Deadline to enter is Feb. 19th.

I like how the dark sandalwood of this wood watch warms up cooler colors, like the grey of this cardigan. I had originally picked out this watch back in 2015 because the dark brown of the band and the black of the watch face would go with lots of different outfits. And I have found that to be true! 🙂

You can also see more of my JORD watch faves here on this Pinterest board.

We took photos in a nearby park on our way to a “boozy brunch” anniversary outing at the Pacific Grill in downtown Tacoma. I donned my grey over-the-knee socks for the first time, and I am really liking the pointelle design on these socks! And yes, I was totally inspired by to pair my grey socks, burgundy brogues, and skirt together after seeing ModCloth’s lead outfit pic for this cat-and-books-print skirt.

Sam said he especially liked this “grown-up school girl” outfit, with my knee socks and book-print skirt and brogues and library card tote bag.

I liked this outfit so much, I wore it again to work this week!
