Inspired by pattern-mixing stripes | Visiting the Washington state capitol building

During the last couple of weeks of our first summer in Washington, Sam and I took the opportunity to visit our new state capitol building in Olympia. (Did y’all know that Olympia has always been the state capital of Washington? That’s a rarity, as most states have had multiple capital cities.) We love visiting capitals, which¬†we have made a point to do in every state (and country) we’ve lived in.

My outfit that I wore on our day trip was inspired by an outfit I spied in the recent issue of People’s Style Watch, a red + black + white casual outfit from Color Me Courtney. (And wow, her style is so fun!) Pattern-mixing stripes? YES, PLEASE.

You can tell I didn’t do a literal inspiration (although I could have, minus the leather); instead, I just focused on the idea of pattern-mixing stripes and the classic color palette of black, white, and red. Cue up my own take on pattern-mixing stripes, with my striped canvas flats and striped tank dress. I brought in the red with my red cardigan and red lipstick — and there are touches of red in my “banned books” pouch, too!ūüėÄ

It’s been said many times, but red lipstick really is a great finishing touch. I’m so glad I’ve embraced a bold red lip! And this is a true red, the L’Oreal Infallible Le Rouge Lipstick in the “Red Ruby” color.

If you’re a longtime reader (thank you!), then you know I’m a goofball. If you’re a new reader, then my outtakes posts will provide proof of this. Sam LOVES to be there to document my goofy side. Like when I was playing around with the lion-head knockers on the front doors of the capitol legislative building.ūüėÄ

The grounds and buildings in Olympia¬†were planned as a “capitol campus,” complete with a lake, statues and memorials, fountain, and sunken gardens. Truly lovely!

And the final photo below is at midday (hence the full-on sun) overlooking the lake. I joked that with my iced coffee, I was totally doing the blogger photo cliche of “coffee as accessory”,¬†like I lampooned years ago during my “funny blogger poses” series. So OF COURSE I had to add it to the blog!¬†:D

Funny blogger poses round-up

As I was cleaning up my blog archives this past summer, I came across a series of posts I did about funny blogger poses. Most of these posts are from the first year I started blogging, 2012, and most of the poses were inspired by the How to Be a Fashion Blogger series on the WTF Pinterest site. I still chuckled my way through re-reading the posts and thought you might find the blogger poses (and posts) amusing, too.

So here’s a round-up for y’all to enjoy:

Late summer casual | Rust + navy

I am loving the new embroidered tank that my mom recently gave me. It’s so soft! Also, the rust color of the tank top kind of reminds me of a creamy tomato soup — is it odd that feels comforting to me?ūüėČ

I wore this casual outfit on a late summer day. I can also picture different ways I can wear this tank for work, like with a pencil skirt and dark denim jacket or navy cardigan.

We took these pics on a late afternoon break to walk around the neighborhood and enjoy some iced coffee. I kept the coffee container in the pics because it amused me to call back to when I did a series of silly “blogger poses,” including one where bloggers pose with their coffee cups. Hee!ūüėÄ

Signature pose?

It’s a funny thing what you start to notice after taking almost daily photos of your outfits after many months (or years). I’ve grown more confident in my own body image, probably in large part due to getting used to my own image (!) and becoming more analytical in choosing photos and seeing how certain outfits and shapes look better on my shape.

I’ve periodically done a series on funny blogger poses, but lately, I’ve also started noticing how often I resort to one pose in particular: ¬†one hand on hip + one leg popped out. Let’s take a stroll through my archives from the past few months alone:

And hey look, sometimes I can even switch arms! Here’s the same pose, but with my left hand on my hip:

Is it enough for this to become my “signature pose”? What do y’all think? Please leave a comment and let me know!ūüôā

Quiero la inspiración

Today’s “Inspiration Monday” style challenge comes again from Eva Mendes (also see here and here), a decidedly more casual look. I wasn’t sure where I’d be going with this inspiration challenge, but I ended up really liking the result. And it helped that when I came downstairs this morning, my husband exclaimed, “You’re so adorable!”¬†‚ô•

Below is my best attempt at “The Paparazzi” blogger pose, subtitled “I have NO idea there is someone taking my picture right now, but I’m determined to look my cutest all the same.”ūüėČ

I chose a graphic tee — this one reads “te quiero mucho” (Spanish for “I love you a lot”) — and switched the denim on the bottom to a skirt. I also chose a fabric headband to echo Eva’s head wrap. And at the last minute, I added a statement necklace, which in retrospect, is my favorite part of the outfit. It links the black in the headband to the black wedges, and adds an unexpected, whimsical touch to this casual look.
