SIA interpretation: On the road

Time for my interpretation of this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, this round curated by SIA co-founder Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey.

Inspiration to interpretation:

Salazar chose an animated GIF inspired by a flower seller in Vietnam from a series of illustrated, animated GIFs called “On the Road” by Chinese artist and illustrator Oamul.

I thought my new-to-me floral shirtdress from the 2013 Phillip Lim for Target collection, as detailed in my monthly budget adventures post from last week, totally fit the inspiration bill! And there are lots of flowers, both in the print of my shirtdress, plus in the bright red rhododendron flower bush behind me. (There’s a clump of orangey-red flowers in the illustration.) And there are bits of black in the flower seller’s outfit, who is also wearing strappy flat sandals. 😀

It also felt fitting that the inspiration artist, Oamul, is Chinese, and my shirtdress was designed by Phillip Lim, an Asian-American artist of Chinese and Cambodian descent born in Thailand. Cheers to awesome Asian designers and artists!

It’s called a “shirtdress” but it is WAY too short for me to wear it as a dress. It also has an interesting and different cut on the back, which you can glimpse in the pics just above and below. So I just treated the dress as a tunic, layering it over black leggings. And HELLO perfect match with my tan-and-black colorblock tote!

This pattern is SO interesting, as is the cut of this dress/tunic, that I kept getting compliments on this outfit, both when I first wore it on the weekend and when I rewore it the next day to work. I felt cool and comfortable in this combo.

The backdrop for all the photos is the Fireman’s Park, located in downtown Tacoma across the old City Hall building. It’s this very sweet little park tucked away on the side; its location on the Metro Parks website is described as “carved into a hillside.” Downtown Tacoma is full of interesting public art and buildings and tiny little niches.

What, me, pattern-mix? SHOCKING. 😉

I wore this outfit for a casual coffee meet-up with a fellow librarian in the region, but I still wanted to look professional. Can’t go wrong with a classic black and red and leopard print combo!

Since I didn’t have to go to work this day, I could get away with this smaller crossbody bag. And it’s amazing how much this crossbody bag and my coordinating red lipstick helped elevate this simple look!

Pairing orange floral with black

My outfit today was inspired by two outfits I saw via Instagram, this one from @iamterrib and this one from @suzannecarillo. Both outfits paired an orange floral dress or skirt with black… and thus, a style idea was born! 😀

It also was a practical choice to pair a heavier jacket and tall boots with this dress, as our transition to spring up here in Tacoma has been a decidedly cold (and rainy) one.

I last paired this orange floral dress with a white cardigan; this time, it was fun to play off the vibrant floral print with all-black pieces and accessories, including a moto-style jacket, tall black heeled boots, and black metal hoop earrings.

I also thought it made for a nice contrast to pair the heavy canvas of this jacket with the floaty fabric of the dress.

Although I think the look would be sharper with a slightly shorter jacket, I really liked wearing this outfit. It felt fun and fresh and unexpected, just right as we are still transitioning into spring up here in the PNW. So many colleagues and students commented on the orange floral print, that it cheered them up! Me, too. 🙂

Agatha Raisin style inspiration

For the last year, I have been enjoying a subscription to the Acorn streaming media service, as it has all my favorite British period and mystery series, like Midsomer MurdersFoyle’s War, Vera, and Poirot. This past August, it started streaming Agatha Raisin, a TV series based on the book series written by M. C. Beaton. It’s a humorous mystery series, spinning off the “cozy mystery” formula in surprising ways, and it stars the dynamic Scottish actress Ashley Jensen as the title character, a PR agent-turned-amateur sleuth.

What I love most about Jensen’s portrayal of Agatha Raisin is how she stays true to her flashy, color-coordinated style, even while feeling (and simultaneously fighting) the urge to “fit in” with her neighbors in the Costwolds. She is realistically flawed while always looking FABULOUS. ♥

My favorite episode thus far is the “Witch of Wyckhadden” episode, which features a castle library, as well as a hidden passageway (which I have been a sucker for ever since reading about Nancy Drew’s adventures in The Hidden Staircase). I took notice when Agatha wore this classic + sassy black-and-brown-tweed combo. I literally shouted at the screen, “I can recreate that outfit!”

And here is my recreation:  wide-legged, brown tweed trousers, a thin black sweater, a tan trench coat, a black beret, and a statement necklace. Gotta admit, I felt pretty snazzy in this outfit!

Below is a closeup of the different textures in this outfit, including the tweed of my trousers, the ribbed cuffs of my lightweight sweater, and the dark wood tones of my JORD watch.

Sam and I had fun recreating some of the poses from the screenshots I took of the Agatha Raisin episode. We browsed various antiques and salvage shops downtown in the theater district of Tacoma, and along the walk, we spotted a picturesque stone wall as well as a beautiful set of stone steps and greenery tucked into a hillside.

Sam had also gone to a literary reading the week before at a local antique shop, Sanford & Son Antiques and Auctions, which has three levels of amazing finds. On the bottom floor is a stage lined in bookcases, complete with library ladder. A perfect place to hold a reading — and a perfect place to take photos for this inspiration post! 😀

SIA interpretation: The Hundred Dresses

For this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, I chose the 1944 children’s classic, The Hundred Dresses, written by Eleanor Estes and illustrated by Louis Slobodkin. The book was a Newbery Honor book, and you can read more about the book here.

There is still time to participate in SIA — bloggers and non-bloggers are both welcome to participate. Wear something inspired by this week’s SIA piece, and send a picture of it to me (at librarianforlifestyle@gmail.com) by tonight by 10 p.m. PST. I will post the SIA round-up on my blog tomorrow morning.

Librarian for LIfe + Style | SIA interpretation: The Hundred Dresses

My starting point for this SIA challenge was my “Little Women” tote bag — the one with hundreds of ladies in dresses on it! 😀 I then chose my red knit fit-and-flare dress, to go with the tote bag (there are also a few red dresses in some internal illustrations), and finished everything off with classic black accessories.

And I counted the number of dresses on this tote bag:  There are 500 dresses, to be exact. (Y’all knew I would count them, right? 😉 )
