Sam’s style | Burberry tie + overcoat

One last reminder to please vote for your favorite outfit of mine from last month — thanks in advance!

Sam’s classes that he’s been teaching this fall quarter are early-morning classes, so I often don’t get to see him until after I get off work, except on days that I work the night shift at the library. This day (which fortunately was a night shift day for me), I had to take photos of him after work because, HELLO. My man looks GOOOOOOOD, y’all. Professional, sharp, stylish. (Swoon.)

And the cognac shoes and belt? Brilliant! The lighter color of these faux-leather accessories really sets off the cooler colors of the lavender button-front and berry colors of this Burberry tie we thrifted this past summer. (Does that tie look familiar? I’ve also worn it already — as a belt!)

Sam also likes to have fun with the details. One of his (male) students cracked up when he spied Sam’s cuff links — which are in the shape of the Transformers. Such a cheeky detail! (And so very Sam! ūüėČ )

Remixing a striped dress with rain boots

A quick note that the poll is about to close for you to vote for your favorite outfit from last month — thanks in advance for voting!

Today’s outfit was inspired by two things: ¬†(a) the rainy weather, and (b) wanting to remix this striped dress, which you’ve seen before here and here.

Bonus pattern-mixing provided by my Pride & Prejudice-print scarf (a recent birthday gift from my friend Stephanie). The scarf was a last-minute addition — it was chilly in the morning! — but I thought it paired nicely with my navy-and-berry striped dress. My navy boot socks also provided a bit more texture to the overall outfit.

I also wore my new put-a-bird-on-it resin earrings, which you also saw earlier this week! And the pink stripe on the back of my rain boots tied in with the berry color of my dress… yes, the details in this outfit made me smile inside all day. ūüėÄ

SIA interpretation: A dark and stormy skirt

It’s time for my Style Imitating Art (SIA) interpretation! This latest challenge was curated by Erin @ Loop Looks.

SIA inspiration pick:

Erin chose this 1939 gouache painting titled “Angel Applicant” and created by artist Paul Klee. You can read more about the painting here on the Met’s site.

"Angel Applicant" by Paul Klee, 1939, is in the Public Domain

“Angel Applicant” by Paul Klee, 1939, is in the Public Domain

My interpretation:

The inspiration painting is mostly black and grey, but I also noted bits of pale pink in the creature’s nostrils and the cloudy bits in the background. I thought this outfit, with its “dark and stormy skirt” and berry cardigan fit in well with the inspiration painting. (Full disclosure — I wore this outfit before Erin chose the inspiration painting — but I do think it ties in well with the challenge.)

And this skirt is one that¬†my friend and fellow librarian Stephanie actually picked for me to style! She also selected my grey-and-black snakeskin wedges to pair with the skirt — she knows how I love to pattern-mix. ūüėČ

I got this skirt years ago when we lived in the UAE, and I was drawn to its stark and stormy floral print. It has double-box pleats on each side, in the front and in the back. This is one of the few items in my closet with box pleats, which can visually widen hips if the pleats spread out too far.

If you don’t remember this box-pleat skirt, don’t worry — it’s been awhile since I’ve worn it or featured it on the blog. You can see it in action here and here, both posts from 2012. Interesting to note that I keep wearing this skirt with shades of purple… ūüėÄ

Adding interest with accessories | Maxidress + cardigan combo

Today’s outfit is not edgy or exciting, and I didn’t originally plan on taking photos of this casual work outfit when I got dressed that morning. Pairing a maxidress and a cardigan is almost like a work version of pajamas for me — sooooooo comfy and easy.

So why take photos at all? I realized at the end of the day it might be a useful example of demonstrating how much accessories can add interest to an outfit. If you look at the photos above and below, the accessories that add interest are:

  1. at the top, a silk headband in a colorful fern pattern and light pink bead earrings;
  2. in the middle, a striped tote bag; and
  3. at the bottom, strappy metallic sandals in a criss-cross pattern.

The different patterns of my headband and tote bag don’t match, of course, but they do “go” together color-wise, as they tie into the berry-colored cardigan.

The backdrop is a mural at a local community park. The animal heads atop the human-shaped bodies are a little freaky, but I thought the purple tones played nicely with the colors of my outfit.

Berry + Burberry | Maxidress + tie belt

If you’re a longtime reader (thank you!), then you’ll know I have frequently worn tie belts. I have made ties into obi-style belts, but I’ve also used single ties as belts, as seen in the collage below.

So on a work day that was cooler and overcast — and knowing I would be in a library with amped-up air-conditioning — I thought a longer-sleeved maxidress would be a good choice.

And hey, I wore a tie to work! ūüėČ

If you’re thinking you haven’t seen this particular tie before, you’re right! My husband recently thrifted this tie on a visit to a local Value Village, and y’all, it’s a Burberry tie. Score! The pattern is a fun plaid with purple, white, orange, and teal stripes, and the Burberry logo — ¬†a knight upon a horse, i.e. the ‚ÄúEquestrian Knight‚ÄĚ — is scattered throughout.

So yes, I *literally* borrowed from the boys today. ūüėČ
