Sam’s SIA interpretation: Harlequin in rose + blue

You’ve seen my interpretation, and now it’s time for Sam’s interpretation of this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge! Last Monday, Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey chose the inspiration artwork, and TODAY, you can check out the full round-up on Salazar’s blog!

The inspiration artwork:

Salazar chose this paintings for its blue tones (although it’s actually from Picasso’s “Rose Period”), the dog, and the interesting harlequin details. You can read more details about the painting here, and more about Picasso’s “Rose Period” here.

Sam’s interpretation:

Sam’s outfit is actually quite similar to my own, with the combo of an argyle tee + solid-colored trousers + patterned slip-on sneakers. There are differences, however:  Sam’s argyle tee is grey (mine is blue); his trousers are burgundy (my skinny jeans are dusty rose); and his slip-on sneakers are a blue plaid (mine are a grey-and-pink graphic print).

I also think Sam’s mirrored sunglasses really finish off the look. He just looks so effortlessly cool, doesn’t he? 🙂

And of course we had to take a couples selfie, featuring our coordinating argyle tees! True love, y’all. ♥

SIA interpretation: Harlequin in rose + blue

It’s time for my interpretation of this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge! Last Monday, Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey chose the inspiration artwork.

The inspiration artwork:

Salazar chose this Pablo Picasso painting to go back to the classics, as well as for the painting’s blue tones (although it’s actually from Picasso’s “Rose Period”), the dog, and the interesting harlequin details. You can read more details about the painting here, and more about Picasso’s “Rose Period” here.

My interpretation:

My outfit came together almost immediately, with the starting point my blue-grey argyle-print tee that I’ve had for years. I thought combining it with my dusty rose skinny jeans would fit the inspiration painting well.

Last-minute additions before I headed out the door included these graphic-print slip-on sneakers, which (in my head, at least) brought together the blue and rose tones of my outfit. I also like the shoes brought in some grey to the outfit, as there is also grey in the inspiration painting.

I also grabbed this blue-and-cream Nancy Drew tote bag on our way out, because the blue tones tied in with my outfit, plus I thought the silhouettes tied into the figures featured in Picasso’s painting. It may be one pattern too many, but it worked for me!

There’s still time to participate in SIA!

Everyone is welcome to participate — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also welcome — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator, Salazar, at 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by tomorrow, June 19th. Salazar will then post the SIA round-up on her blog, 14 Shades of Grey, this Wednesday, June 20th.

Also be sure to check out fellow SIA co-host Daenel @ Living Outside the Stacks.

Sam’s style | Neutral layers with a pop of red

If you saw the Style Imitating Art round-up for Erin’s final curated challenge for SIA, then this outfit of Sam’s will be familiar to you. He put this look together himself for the challenge — with no help from me! — and I think it’s a good example of how to layer casual pieces together for a stylish yet still casual men’s look.

Sam layered a red argyle sweater over a basic dark grey tee, then layered a light grey zip-up sweater over that. The two shades of grey create visual depth, and the pop of red peeking through is just so dynamic, isn’t it? The black jeans ground the entire look, and the textured slip-on sneakers are fun and casual, and add a bit more pattern to the entire look. As I’ve said before on this blog, Sam has master-level pattern-mixing skillz.

I just love the photo above of Sam cracking up while I take photos for once. One reason is because he is ALWAYS trying to crack me up when he’s taking photos of me. Another reason is because it’s very true to Sam’s personality. And finally, it shows a peek of his “man bun,” which Sam did specially for me, as I really like it when he puts his hair up into a man bun. (He has curly hair, so that hair style just works on him!) I also like that you can see the streaks of grey on the sides of his hair — the grey streaks go with his grey clothing, hah! 😉

Sam’s style, plaid + burgundy

Just a quick note to remind everyone that the reader poll is open to vote for your favorite outfit from last month — thanks in advance!

And now, more of Sam’s style! I was sure you wouldn’t mind… 😉

We recently bought Sam new trouser socks at Kohl’s to replace worn-out socks in his wardrobe, and HOW CUTE do these argyle socks look with his outfit? Every other piece of his outfit he has had for awhile, and it’s just so well-coordinated, isn’t it? And he’s still showing his mastery at pattern-mixing, with the argyle socks + plaid button-front + checkered fedora.

Sam’s style | Argyle + layers

As promised in yesterday’s post, here’s another opportunity to highlight my husband Sam’s cool style. Yesterday, a shoes selfie; today, a regular selfie!

Sam is such a pro at layering. And layering with interesting pieces. I’d also like to think my love of color-coordination has rubbed off on him. I mean, a brown argyle sweater cardigan over a a grey button-front, paired with a grey fedora with a brown ribbon, PLUS cognac-tipped shoes that tie in with the cognac diamonds in the argyle print. That is master-level color-coordination that also doesn’t come off as gimmicky. PRO.

Sam and I both love these shoes, which have a kind of old-school but classic look. I think they’re his current favorite right now. They’re from Payless! My husband’s a vegetarian, so we have to get shoes made out of man-made materials, rather than leather — which is harder than you’d think! But Payless always has at least some options with faux leather.

Details of Sam’s outfit:

  • Overcoat:  Zara, bought years ago in Abu Dhabi
  • Sweater cardigan:  Zara? Also bought in Abu Dhabi
  • Button-front:  ???, old
  • Jeans:  Gap, new
  • Shoes:  Payless, new
  • Fedora:  Goorin Bros., bought in Portland a few years ago

I go back-and-forth on whether or not I should provide outfit details when I highlight my husband’s outfits. Would y’all prefer me to include outfit details or not for Sam’s outfits? Please leave a comment and let me know!
