Work to weekend | Jane Austen tee

I’ve worn my Jane Austen feminism tee a few times already since buying it in February, but I hadn’t featured it on the blog — until now!

And you get a two-fer, with a “work to weekend” post. If I have a Friday work day that doesn’t involve teaching, I often wear a more casual outfit, when I then remix for the weekend.

For work:

The tee features a quote from Pride and Prejudice, in which Lizzy Bennet is admonished as being an “obstinate, headstrong girl!” — which Lizzy turns around to be a compliment, of course. As I would, too. 😀

For the weekend:

And above are the common elements I kept for the weekend look. I remixed the tee, the dark denim jacket, the geometric-print canvas flats, and my colorful earrings. The only piece I changed was the trousers I wore for work, which I switched out for light grey jeans on the weekend. I also changed out my bag.

Note:  I forgot to put in my earrings until after we took photos. But I did wear them with this outfit! 🙂

And I cheered out loud when I realized that the perfect finishing touch for my weekend variation of this outfit would be my new Pride and Prejudice tote bag. Perfect!

Feeling very PNW in navy stripes + olive vest + scarf

I am in the habit of repeating an outfit on the weekend that I happened to wear for a casual Friday work day. And that happened with this outfit! I wore it to work for a professional development day for all faculty and staff, and then I wore it again on Saturday when Sam and I went to another $7 mid-morning movie. (We saw Logan, and it is goooooooood.)

I felt like I was definitely in the Pacific Northwestern style groove in my new navy-striped tee from J.Crew Factory that I paired with my trusty olive cargo vest and cognac riding boots. It’s a combination that’s casual, comfy, practical, and not at all fussy or trying too hard. That’s PNW style in a nutshell.

We took photos out by Ruston Way waterfront, up on the north end where there’s a new cinema. There’s a path that leads along the waterfront, but we decided to take photos up on the upper steps that then lead down to the path. I liked that it looked like the edge of the steps went right into the water. This was a beautifully sunny morning, a brief respite before more rain.

I don’t think I’ve highlighted this scarf on the blog before. It’s a scarf that my mom gifted me years ago, and it’s made out of knits repurposed from old sweaters. It has a heart on one end, and a stack of books on the other end, with literary genres listed inbetween. The genres included are:  adventure, poetry, fantasy, fiction, history, biography, thriller, religion, travel, military, science fiction, western, romance, mystery, classics, and nonfiction. A perfect scarf for a librarian!

It was a last-minute decision to throw on this scarf, as I thought it might be chilly where we were all meeting for the keynote address that was kicking off the professional development day. (I was right. I wore the scarf all day.) But what I didn’t realize is that the scarf, with its green and blue tones, has the colors of regional sports teams, specifically the Seattle Sounders (Major League Soccer) and the Seattle Seahawks (National Football League). So all day long, colleagues came up to me and asked if I was either a Sounders or a Seahawks fan! 😀

To help illustrate this, here are the logos for the Sounders and the Seahawks, which both incorporate similar shades of green and blue:

It was like I was getting bonus credit for being a PNW sports fan! I will take it. 😀

Statement necklace + necklace extension trick

I wasn’t actually planning on taking pics of this outfit, as it’s not an outfit I put much thought into in the early morning hours when I was getting dressed. This is a combination that I’ve reworn several times — a cozy sweater + skinny jeans + tall boots. But on this morning, I thought, “Hmmmm… why not add a statement necklace just to brighten things up? That’ll cheer me up.” And it did!

I decided to take pics after I got home from work, as several colleagues commented favorably on my statement necklace and how it “popped” against the darker tones of my outfit. And we were lucky enough to capture that “golden light” when the day starts to turn to dusk. Plus, our winter-blooming camellias added another pop of color in the background. I love these flowers!

And below is a closeup of my statement necklace — and matching earrings! My paternal grandmother made both the necklace and the earrings; she was a very creative and artistic person, and I inherited a lot of her jewelry after she passed away. (I also highlighted my grandmother’s jewelry here in this post.) She lived in Arizona during her later years, hence the turquoise and Southwestern feel to this jewelry set. You definitely don’t see much of this kind of jewelry up here in the Pacific Northwest, which is probably why it stood out even more for my colleagues!

How to easily extend necklaces:

Now for the bracelet extender trick! I got this tip years ago from my blogger pal Erin @ Loop Looks, and it’s super simple. Just attach a bracelet to both ends of the necklace clasps, as you can see below, and voilà, you’ve extended any necklace by a few inches! It helps if the bracelet matches the metal or material of the necklace — but it doesn’t have to. That’s why I usually employ this trick when I’m wearing a turtleneck or cowl sweater or top , so the bracelet extension part is hidden by the extra folds of fabric.

Day to date night

My husband and I planned a date night recently, and I knew I would need to wear something that I could easily adapt after work before setting off for our date. Then the light bulb went off — why not also document this for the blog? 🙂

Librarian for Life + Style | Day to date night collage

I started by checking the weather — no rain! — and then I knew that I wanted to wear my yellow-and-black high heels for nighttime. I worked backward from there. The common elements between my casual work day outfit and my date night outfit were my polka-dotted top and my black skinny jeans. That meant that all I had to do to get ready for our date was to switch out the shoes and the “completer piece,” from cardigan to blazer. I also switched out my bag, from tote bag to clutch.

It also turned out that pattern-mixing emerged as a theme, but I didn’t think about that at the beginning. That was just a nice by-product! 😉

Warning:  This post is particularly photo-heavy.

Day:

I’ve had this sleeveless polka-dotted top for a few years now. Because of the ruffles, it can look a bit dressier on its own (perfect or a day-to-night outfit!), but adding a cardigan makes it totally appropriate for a casual work look. I added my striped canvas flats for comfort — the pattern-mixing was just icing on the cake! 😉

By the way, the backdrop here of painted bricks? It’s our chimney! It’s located more toward the west side of our house, so it’s a good place for photos in the morning.

What I wore:

  • Top:  eShakti, old
  • Cardigan:  August Silk via Macy’s, old — my favorite line of cardigans!
  • Skinny jeans:  Banana Republic, last year
  • Canvas flats:  Payless, last winter
  • Earrings:  UAE, gift from my husband

Date night:

Sam and I had made reservations at a nice dinner out downtown (at the Pacific Grill, which is excellent!), so I wanted to look a bit more dressy — but not too dressy. Remixing the black skinny jeans accomplished that sartorial goal, and my pattern-mixing heels just looked so cool with these jeans. I felt that the black cardigan would have been too casual, which is why I switched it out for my trusty black blazer, but I turned up the cuffs on the blazer.

My clutch has the print of an old library card, so my outfit still showcases my “librarian” side!

The backdrop is the front of a local church, by the way — and no worries, they weren’t having services while we took these photos!

During our quick photo shoots, Sam likes to call out things or jokes to elicit reactions from me. Like for the photo below, he called out, “Be fierce!” The result:

And… then I immediately cracked up!

Librarian for Life + Style | Date night look

What IS fierce, however, are these heels. I don’t wear these striped and polka-dotted four-inch heels very often, but when I do, I feel like a million dollars. I’ve worn these heels with dresses, as seen here, and with cropped ankle pants, as seen here. I did a slight cuff on my black skinny jeans this time to help show off the heels and the striped ankle straps.

It’s time for some close-ups!

You can also see that I also amped up my makeup for date night, and tomorrow I’ll get into how I layered lip stains. I also switched out my accessories, going from small silver hoops for day to black teardrop earrings for night. At the last minute, right before we headed out the door, I asked Sam if he thought I should add my rope brooch to my blazer. He agreed, and I think it’s a nice finishing touch, to tie in the circular shapes from head to heels.

Back to school and starting a new job | Blue + yellow

A quick note that the poll is open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from August — thanks in advance!

I wore this outfit last month to a professional organization board meeting (I’m transitioning off the board), which is when these photos were taken. And thanks to my good friend Stephanie, who took these pictures for me — and we took these photos at her house! Yep, that’s her very cool mural behind me.

I also plan on rewearing this outfit today, on my first day at my new job! Why? Because my new college’s colors are blue and yellow! 😀 And this outfit is casually professional and also comfy, a good combination for starting a new school year AND a new job.

My starting point with this outfit was the gingham shirt and the cognac wedges. Then came the navy ankle pants — seriously, these navy ankle pants seem to be my go-to pants for whenever I feel I need a “professional yet still casual” kind of vibe, as seen here, here, and here! Then came the belt, because I thought a little subtle pattern-mixing would be fun. And lastly, the yellow statement necklace, because I thought some contrast was in order.

And yep, I totally did the “blogger tuck,” which means half-tucking and half-untucking your shirt in that oh-so-casual way. I’m not so skilled at the casual part, but I actually liked the way it turned out. And it’s just more comfortable to untuck the back of one’s shirt — mine always seem to come untucked in the back anyway! Have you ever done the “blogger tuck” — intentionally or unintentionally?
