Library card catalog tee + tote for casual work combo

I always find it an interesting challenge to dress for campus professional development days. I’m not teaching, so I feel I can go more casual, but I’m also around colleagues, so I don’t want to go too casual.

So all that thinking led to the outfit below. It does veer more toward the casual end of the spectrum (the tee + tote bag + slip-on sneakers), but the two items that still keep it in the professional realm for me are the ankle pants (instead of jeans) and the cardigan. And I kept it fun with my bright pink lipstick 😉

I also feel motivated to wear library-themed clothing or accessories on campus professional development days, so I can help visually represent the library to other colleagues around the campus. (Not that I ever really need an excuse, hah! 😉 )

Luckily, I have accumulated several library-themed options in my closet, but the ones I chose for this outfit were my “NEVER FORGET” card catalog tee and my library card tote bag.

I’ve been wanting to take pics in front of this wall for awhile — the colors are so fun with the brightly colored bubbles and the fish-scale type siding. The colors in my outfit and in my shoes include many of the colors of the wall, which made me happy. ♥

SIA interpretation 2: Monkey lithograph

Now for my SECOND interpretation for this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, the first inspiration artwork curated by newest SIA co-host Daenel @ Living Outside the Stacks. That’s right, I was so inspired that I wore TWO inspiration outfits; you can see the other one on Monday’s post. And you can see the entire round-up — including Sam’s SIA-inspired outfit! — today on Daenel’s blog!

The inspiration artwork:

Daenel chose this lithograph, seen below, because she ♥ ♥ ♥ monkeys, and the colors are so springlike. As Daenel herself said, “Since this is my first time curating, I thought I’d go with something fun and colorful, with plenty of room for interpretation.” Click here for more information about the lithograph.

My second interpretation:

My second outfit idea started with my vintage Hawaiian-print dress (which was actually made in Hawaii, as per the label), because of the tropical theme of the lithograph. There’s also a tiny bit of red in the postcard via a bird in the lower left corner. I then layered my yellow starburst cardigan over the dress, because there is a fair bit of yellow in the postcard.

It amused me that I used the same outfit formula for both interpretations — a print dress layered under a cardigan — but the colors and print make the two outfits look very different.

I added my cognac rope tassel belt to help give shape to the Hawaiian-print dress, and you can see more of the print in the pic below.

And a note about my accessories:  I chose my yellow and white colorblock tote for obvious color reasons; my bamboo earrings fit in with the tropical theme; and I added my turquoise stud earrings to bring in the bit of turquoise in the other bird in the lithograph postcard.

The backdrop is actually the same backdrop from the trench coat + red crossbody bag outfit post, but the vines have now exploded into leaves thanks to our recent, extended bout of warm spring weather. I thought they made for a nice backdrop that also echoed the backdrop from the postcard.

And last but not least, during our photo shoot, I borrowed my husband’s elephant cane — he was using it on the day — because the russet and gold tones of the cane fit in with the colors of the inspiration lithograph. Also, why not add one more animal to the mix?! 😉

SIA interpretation: Cherry blossom dish

A quick note that the poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit last month!

It’s time for my interpretation of this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge! Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey chose the inspiration artwork, a Japanese “Nabeshima” dish from the Met’s public domain collection.

The inspiration artwork:

My interpretation:

My starting point was my green floral scarf, one of the few floral-patterned items in my closet. It brought in the green tones from the leaves in the plate design, plus the floral theme, of course. Then I added a navy cardigan (which you can see better if you scroll down a bit), dark skinny jeans, and finally, my navy trench. I snuck in a bit more floral because my trench coat and belt are trimmed in a daisy print.

I really wanted to get in photos this past week with some cherry trees, and I was lucky to spy this copse of cherry trees blooming with some of the paler blooms I’ve seen around town.

Below is a closeup of the floral print on my scarf, as well as a closeup of my champagne-colored flats. I went with these flats because the folds of the silk pleats along the round toe reminded me of the cross-hatching of lines in the plate design. I also wore yellow rose stud earrings, to tie into my scarf and to add a final floral touch.

I wore this outfit to work, a decidedly casual outfit for a more casual day at work (no reference desk duty or teaching). I could easily wear this outfit for running errands, too, so it’s more of a “work to weekend” kind of look. I felt pretty and comfortable in this outfit, pretty true to my personal style outlook. The “bit of quirk” comes in with all the subtle floral-mixing of the daisies, roses — and cherry blossoms! 🙂

You could also easily dress this outfit up for your own workplace by switching out jeans for ankle pants or trousers or a pencil skirt.

Pink jeans + black stripes with a pop of floral

This outfit was inspired by another librarian’s combo of pink jeans + black stripes, which you can see here on What the Librarian Wore’s Instagram feed.

I wore this outfit a couple of times recently, first for errand running on a day off. I grabbed my floral clutch at the last minute as way to add in some more color and pattern-mixing. (I then rewore this exact outfit to a conference later that same week — just picture this exact outfit with my black tote bag instead of the floral clutch.) And because some of our errands included being downtown, we were able to take photos by a group of blooming cherry blossom trees. I loooooove cherry blossoms, and it was a lovely way to add another shade of pink to these photos! ♥

Is it strange that I love that one of the bow ends on my flats is sticking up, as you can see in the photos above and below — and that it reminds me of cat ears every time I see these photos?! If that’s wrong, then I don’t wanna be right! 😉

And HELLO to (accidentally) color-coordinating my nail polish with my rose-colored jeans! This polish is technically copper-colored — it’s “Penny Talk” by Essie, part of the “Mirror Metallics” line of polishes, and you’ve seen me wear this polish on the blog before — but it looks more a rose gold on me. It’s a super flattering neutral tone, and I love the polish’s metallic shine.

I seriously LOVED this outfit — just the right combo of comfort and cuteness without trying too hard. 😀

Tobi review | One sweater cardigan, two outfits

Another day, another Tobi clothing item to style and enjoy! You can read my first Tobi review here in this post, where I go into more detail about Tobi and its site and styles, and how I paired two Tobi clothing items together, a navy “Schoolboy Ribbed Sweater” and a black “Mel Pinstriped Scarf.”

This time around, I styled this Carly Draped Cardigan, which is my favorite of the three items I selected from Tobi. (It was originally priced $82 but is currently on sale for $31.) Sam was again VERY doubtful of this cardigan since I usually wear more structured pieces — but once I put it on, we both loved it!

In fact, I loved this sweater cardigan so much that I wanted to feature TWO different ways I wore it. Y’all know how much I love remixing!

Librarian for Life + Style | Remixing a draped cardigan collage

Look #1 (casual remix):

The first outfit with this Carly Draped Cardigan (this style of cardigan is also called a “waterfall cardigan” or an “open cardigan”) is a casual look — but honestly, I would also wear this to work because my work place is pretty casual. I paired this cardigan over olive ankle pants, grey leather-and-suede ankle boots, and a grey tank top. You could also make this look a lot more casual by wearing sneakers or flats.

This sweater is soooooo comfy and cozy, y’all. And the quality seems pretty high to me, as the material is soft (not scratchy!) and pretty substantial for knitwear. The ribbed detailing along the drape-y bits, cuffs, and hem speaks to the overall quality of this Carly Draped Cardigan.

I had a lot of fun playing with the front drape-y bits, as you can see in the photos below! I wanted to show y’all a few different ways you could style a draped cardigan like this.

First, I pinned one of the ends over to the other side, letting the ends cascade down.

Librarian for Life + Style | Tobi grey sweater cardigan, casual remix

Next, I draped one of the ends across and over my opposite shoulder, letting the other end hang down to create another cool, asymmetrical look. (This was actually my favorite way to wear this cardigan.)

Finally, I took the end hanging down from the previous method and pinned it on the other side, so that the cardigan hems lined up a bit more.

Details:

  • Carly Draped Cardigan:  c/o Tobi, new
  • Olive ankle pants: Tommy Hilfiger via Macy’s, old
  • Leather-and-suede ankle boots:  Naturalizer, old
  • Earrings:  Gift from my friend Stephanie, a few years old

Look #2 (work remix):

For this second look, I kept the grey cardigan and the ankle booties but switched out the ankle pants for tights and a black pencil skirt. I really liked the juxtaposition of the body-conscious foundation of the pencil skirt and tights with the unstructured and looser sweater cardigan on top.

I also think wearing black ankle boots would be a good choice with this outfit, as it would streamline the legs more. I will probably wear it that way next time!

  • Carly Draped Cardigan:  c/o Tobi, new
  • Black pencil skirt:  ModCloth, old
  • Ribbed tights:  Walmart?, old
  • Tall high-heeled boots:  Rampage via Nordstrom, over a decade old

Which way did you like this cardigan best? Do you have a draped cardigan in your wardrobe? Which of my three Tobi items did you like best?
