SIA: Madame X | Mixing metallics with a black maxi

It’s time for my interpretation for this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge!

Inspiration:

Daenel @ Living Outside the Stacks chose John Singer Sargent’s stunning 1884 portrait of young socialite Virginie Amélie Avegno Gautreau. The painting is titled Portrait of Madame X, or more simply, Madame X. You can read more about the painting online here.

My interpretation:

My black v-neck maxidress is a total no-brainer for this inspiration painting. And while I wore the white cardigan to make this maxi more appropriate for work, it still captures that “bare white shoulder” look of Madame X.

I picked up this bronze bag at Tacoma’s Pride Festival last month, a bag made of recycled leather and made by a local artisan, Patrick Kdep of Patrick’s Creations. I didn’t think about it on the day, but after looking at the photos, I like how the white liner of the bag goes with my white cardigan.

And the bronze color of the tote bag echoes the bronze-y tones of the table and backdrop of the inspiration painting.

Below is a closeup of how I mixed metallics for the accessories:

  • rose gold (square stud earrings + bangles)
  • bronze (hoop earrings + recycled leather handbag)
  • pewter (the upper strap on my metallic sandals)

And finally, last but not least, are a couple of photos from other places in our front yard where we took photos. I included them because I liked how the different backdrops brought out different tones in the metallics: the cooler green leaves of the tree highlight the cooler tones of my outfit, while the sienna red of our fence brings out the warmer tones of the metallics and bag.

Summer work casual | Grey tunic with pops of red

A quick note that the poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from last month — thanks in advance!

I played with proportions and pops of color for today’s summer casual work outfit. I layered my grey tunic over red ankle pants, and I added more pops of red with the red floral ribbon belt I made this past year, a red patterned tote bag, and a red charm on my silver charm necklace.

Below is a closeup of the double-sided fabric belt I made this past year. One side is a red floral ribbon; the other side is a red and green plaid. For a more casual feel, I just looped the ends over to hang down.

Below is another closeup of the red ribbon side of the fabric belt, along with my silver charm necklace. I could have worn any number of earrings in my jewelry collection with this outfit, but in the end, I went with my silver + peridot small hoops, to bring out the green in the floral ribbon print.

Red + black + patent leather circle bag

This past weekend, Sam and I enjoyed going out to a couple of local festivals, including Ethnic Fest at Wright Park and Glass Fest Northwest down by the harbor and Museum Row.

Here’s what I wore to the Glass Fest, with a circle bag that I picked up the day before at Ethnic Fest. It was a beautiful summer day by the harbor, and I felt cool and comfy in a sleeveless eyelet top, a cotton jersey skirt, strappy sandals, and this retro-inspired circle bag. I was feelin’ it. 😉

Below is a closeup of this cool patent leather circle bag, which I picked up at Nikky’s Niche Designs booth at the Ethnic Fest. Although I’ve been on a general shopping ban these past six months, I don’t mind scouting out clothes or jewelry or accessories at local festivals, because I’m helping support local artists and small business owners.

The bag is covered in a collage of Michelle and Barack Obama magazine covers, and I just love every little thing about it, including the gold studs on one side. It’s retro-inspired and timeless at the same time. ♥

The purse also came with a matching wallet, seen below, and a crossbody strap (which you can spy in my Instagram post yesterday!), which made it really comfortable to wear while we walked around the festival — which included free day passes to the Tacoma Art Museum and the Museum of Glass! We took photos outside the Museum of Glass’s hot shop tower.

SIA interpretation: Arrow Collar advertisement

It’s time for my interpretation for this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge!

Inspiration artwork:

It was Salazar‘s turn to curate, and she chose an ad for Arrow shirt collar by J. C. Leyendecker. The male model in the ad is based on his long-time partner, Charles Beach. You can read more about Leyendecker and see more of his artwork here.

Since we’re in the middle of summer, Salazar “wanted to pick a summery piece, and this one — with its white-and-beige color scheme and touches of green, black, and pink — just fits the bill.”

I also appreciated that the ad includes both a man and a woman, so here’s a peek at what my sweetie Sam and I wore for the challenge (psst… you can see Sam’s entire outfit on Wednesday’s round-up on Salazar’s blog):

My interpretation:

And now more details about what I wore… I thought first about wearing my bow blouse tee, seen here, but I wanted to wear a shirt with a collar, since the ad is for the Arrow Collar. So I wore my diamond-print button-front shirt instead, and tied a thin salmon pink scarf into a bow for a “lady tie,” which echoed the pink scarf in the woman’s hair. Neutral khakis and a structured tote finished off the look and tied into the inspiration artwork.

My peep-toe wedges with the black piping were a last-minute addition to the outfit, and I think they ended up making the look! They tie into the color scheme, link all the black accents in my outfit together, and the style could be considered a feminine take on spats. ♥

And finally, a closeup of the diamond-print and shirt collar, as well as the bronze-and-bead earrings. I chose these earrings because they reminded me of little arrows, which tied into the Arrow Collar company! 😀

Sporty casual with a maxidress + canvas flats

Whew, back to summer outfits! 😉

This combo — a sleeveless maxidress + button-front shirt + canvas flats — is ridiculously comfortable for a (cooler) summer weekend. I’ve read my beloved Tom & Lorenzo question why ladies love wearing maxidresses in the summer (all that fabric), but the thing is, when you wear maxidresses, you create your own breeze as you walk. It’s like built-in air conditioning, complete with shade. Real talk, y’all. It’s all part of the service. 😉

This footbridge at Wright Park had been closed down for repairs for at least a year after we moved to Tacoma. So we were excited to finally get pics on the newly restored bridge, which overlooks this lovely pond with fountains and statues. (You can see other spots of Wright Park in previous style posts here, here, and here.)

My goodness, I love these canvas flats. They’re from the Mossimo line from Target — a line they phased out last year, much to my disappointment — and I’ve worn these shoes with skinny jeans, with shorts, and with ankle pants. And now with maxidresses! 🙂

Also, we took these pics right after I got my hair trimmed, so my hairdo is looking particularly sharp. I’ve had this shorter, spikier version of a pixie cut for almost exactly a year, and I’m still lovin’ it! ♥
