Cat wings | Dressing up a cat tee for work with a midi skirt

This is my final summer work look (although I’ve been on summer break for a few weeks; my 3-day-a-week posting schedule can delay outfit postings), although it could TOTALLY work for a fall work outfit for those, like me, who are still experiencing hotter temps.

So it still feels like good timing for this outfit, which for me has ALL THE THINGS:  cats, more cats, a midi skirt, pattern-mixing, comfy tee, statement earrings, red lipstick, and a public art mural backdrop.

That’s right, I’m doubling down on the cats! #noregrets

And I had to choose WHICH cat tote to pair with my cat tee, because I have more than one cat-print tote bag. I am that kind of cat lady, yes I am. Again, #noregrets. I chose my multi-cat tote bag over my bolder “Meow!” cat tote, as seen here, because I wanted my Jason Wu for Target cat tee to take center stage.

Ahhhh, red lipstick and retro-style silver hoop earrings. Classic. And my silver metallic nail polish matching my earrings? Hello, my name is Jen, and I love to color-coordinate. 😉

The backdrop is one of wings in a Native American art style. It’s actually one pair of wings in a trio of wing murals, and I’ve been wanting to take photos here for awhile. I particularly like this pair of wings, because of the bold lines and color combo!

Making a floral maxidress more casual with a chambray shirt

It’s been awhile since I’ve worn this floaty floral maxi (which you can see on its own here in this post). I have worn this floral maxi a couple of times for fancier occasions, but this time, I decided to make it more casual with a chambray button-front shirt. (And yes, it’s still summer up here in the PNW, and I wore this on a sunny and warm day.)

By the way, we took these photos on our back steps, which had definitely seen better days! Basically right after we took these photos, we worked on replacing those steps — yep, with me and my husband doing all the work — so these photos are the last remnants of what our back steps used to look like! (The new steps are now stained red, like the posts in the railing and our fence.)

This dress is so fun! I love how the overlay with all the flowers is sheer, so it creates interesting depth and shapes when I move. And the v-neck on this dress is deep, so I wore the maxi over a black sports bra, as per my usual clothing layering trick.

SIA interpretation: Autumn abstract

A quick note that the reader poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from last month — thanks in advance!

And now it’s time for my interpretation of the most recent Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge. 🙂

Inspiration:

Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey chose “Autumn Rhythm (Number 30)” by Jackson Pollock, which he painted in 1950. It’s one of the most notable examples of the “poured-painting” style that Pollock used during the late 1940s and early 1950s. You can read more about this painting here and here.

Below is an openly licensed photograph of the painting hanging in The Met:

And below is a closeup detail of the painting via The Met’s website, where you can also see additional closeups and photographs of the painting. The detail below gives you a better sense of the colors Pollock used in the abstract painting.

Salazar chose this painting because she “recently learned that his drip paintings are so pleasing to look at because they contain fractal patterns similar to those in nature, which I found fascinating… Plus, the neutral color scheme and the title make this an appropriate choice for September.”

My interpretation:

My outfit is a bit out-of-the-box, at least regarding the SIA challenge, but no worries, I will explain all. I am on summer break right now, so I wanted to highlight a typical outfit that’s more casual and sportier than what you usually see on my blog. I wore this outfit on a sunny (albeit chillier) summer day last weekend, when my husband and I enjoyed a picnic and stroll along the Ruston Way waterfront.

So how does this tie in with the abstract inspiration artwork? The navy and tan colors reflect the two major colors in the painting, obviously. But for me, this outfit — and how it ties into the SIA challenge — comes down to the closeup of textures and accessories, seen above and below.

Salazar mentioned that Pollock’s abstract paintings “contain fractal patterns similar to those in nature,” and I was intrigued by that. Therefore, I chose pieces that, upon closer inspection, have interesting patterns, like the cable knit pattern on this fisherman’s sweater, and the checkerboard pattern on my sneakers. But the core of this idea is the scarf, which is actually a map of the Portland transit system! (Click on the photo below to open a larger version.) It just looks like random lines and squiggles on a piece of cotton fabric, but there is method to its madness. Like Pollock’s abstract paintings. 😉

It felt great to be out by the water. And if you’re a longtime reader (thank you, as always!), then you know the Ruston Way waterfront is one of my favorite places in Tacoma.

There’s still time to participate in SIA, and here’s how:

Everyone is welcome to participate — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also welcome — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator, Salazar, at 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by this Tuesday, September 11th. Salazar will then post the SIA round-up on her blog, 14 Shades of Grey, this Wednesday, September 12th.

Can’t wait to see what y’all come up with!

Late summer casual vibes | Paisley top + pink jeans

I was FEELIN’ this color combination the day I wore this outfit. It’s not a common color combo — dusty rose and light brown — but it feels like it just epitomizes late summer, doesn’t it?

I woke up this morning wanting to wear this thrifted top, with its unusual and distinctive u-shape neckline. And then I realized that it would pair well with my dusty rose jeans. The two items doesn’t exactly match, but my goodness, does they ever coordinate nicely together.

I pulled up the hems of the jeans for a more casual feel, for a decidedly behind-the-scenes kind of day at the library. So although I did wear this outfit for work, this could just as easily be a casual outfit. I grinned when a co-worker saw me and exclaimed, “You look like summer!” 😀

I have been digging bronze-y and metallic tones this summer, and they were the right call again for this outfit. The dusty rose jeans just call out for metallics, don’t they?

I am mixing together brass (bracelet), bronze (hoop earrings + tote bag), cognac (wedges), rose gold (stud earrings), and a bit of metallic silver (nail polish). It doesn’t sound like all those different tones should work together, and yet they do. I actually really love the dash of metallic silver — so unexpected!

What I wore to a local street fair | Dashiki bright + colorful

I got this bright and colorful dashiki a year ago at a local street fair, so it felt like the perfect item to wear to this year’s street fair! Also, a cotton dashiki or tunic is a VERY good idea to wear to any summer festival, as it is loose-fitting and in a breathable fabric.

Also, I have learned that a crossbody bag is the perfect bag for these kinds of festivals, as I don’t have to worry about it as we walk around. Plus, it keeps both my hands free for all the stuff you accumulate at a street fair (flyers, bags, sno cones, etc.). 😉

Because it was hot that day, I wore my wide-brimmed black sunhat, which I thrifted at a local resale shop last summer. Sam said the hat gave me “flair.” 😀

You’ve seen this sun hat before, in an SIA post a few weeks ago, but it looks totally different today paired with this more casual outfit. I love the hat’s bendable rim — and this EXACT sun hat is still available!

I started out the day wearing my black metal hoop earrings, which you’ve seen several times before, like here and here. But during the street fair, I picked up these fabulous circle earrings made out of wood. In fact, I bought these earrings from the same African businesswoman, who is sales director for Kijiji Village Craft, that I bought the dashiki from last year! I loved them so much that I decided to wear them then and there. This summer, I have been all about the lightweight statement earrings!

The vibrant backdrop is a local grocer and convenience store that is painted turquoise with bright pink window trim. I’ve been wanting to take photos against this backdrop for awhile now, so it all turned out perfectly to pair a brightly colored backdrop with a brightly colored tunic! 😀
