Remixing my floral shirtdress as a long cardigan

Earlier this year, I loooooooooved remixing my wrap dress as a long cardigan. Kezzie, a longtime reader of this style blog (thank you!) mentioned in a comment on that post about how she also has remixed shirtdresses as long cardigans or jackets. I cataloged that brilliant idea in my head — yes, I mentally picture my brain as a kind of library card catalog, complete with drawers and categories — and brought it back out again when I purchased my new-to-me floral shirtdress.

Here’s a quick side-by-side comparison of remixing this shirtdress, first as a tunic over leggings, seen at left, and this time as a long cardigan or jacket over ankle pants, seen at right below. And the shorter length of this shirtdress works particularly well for wearing it as a long cardigan!

I loved wearing this outfit, y’all. So much I wore it twice! Once to work, and then again on the weekend to a reading discussion group. And since I layered the shirtdress-turned-long-cardigan over a sleeveless shell, it was totally wearable for a summer work outfit. I could have worn any number of shoes with this outfit, so if your work dress code doesn’t allow for open-toed shoes or sandals, you could easily pair this kind of look with pumps or flats.

I pinned my bangs back on my new pixie cut and added a thin black headband to play a bit with it, and I fluffed up the back. And instead of big earrings or black metal hoops, I went with little turquoise drop earrings to pick up on the bits of turquoise in the floral print.

And last but not least, this is the third in our series of taking pics along East 34th Street Bridge, a fun way to capture the seasons here in Tacoma. So here you go, summertime and full-blooming, leafy trees along East 34th Street Bridge in east Tacoma! See here for winter pics, and here for spring pics along this same bridge.

SIA interpretation: Light in the dark

It’s time for another Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, this round coming back to me to curate.

SIA inspiration pick:

I chose a striking photographic artwork that I’ve had pinned on my private “SIA Ideas” Pinterest board for awhile. I found this public domain image on Pixabay, and it’s by a 16-year old Italian photographer, Joachim Mayr, who posts images on Pixabay under the username of “By_Jo.” You can see more of his photographs, mostly of closeups of nature and animals, online here.

Light in the dark by By-Jo, public domain

Still time to participate! Here’s how:

Even though the photo art is pretty simple, there are a few different ways you could go with the inspiration. Color-wise, there’s black and gold, or extend that to yellow or orange or other metallics like rose gold. You could go with a graphic print, or even polka dots. (That would be fun!) You could also go with metallic jewelry or hoops or necklaces or bangles. Lots of options!

Everyone — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! — is welcome to participate. Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also just fine — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator — that’s me! — at librarianforlifestyle@gmail.com by tonight by 10 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST). I will then post the SIA round-up on my blog tomorrow.

My interpretation:

My all-black outfit is right on target with the inspiration photograph, as is the circular Wonder Woman logo in gold on the front. And Wonder Woman herself echoes the feelings I found in this photo, of being brave and hopeful and strong.

Of course, I had to amp up this super casual tee-and-shorts combo with metallic accessories, which also all relate to Wonder Woman, as well as to the inspiration photo:

  • black and gold flip flops (it was not lost on me that when I put my feet together, the straps looked like “W”… and with the double straps, it was CLEARLY “Wonder Woman”…)
  • braided headband with gold bits (the Amazonian women all have braids)
  • gold knot earrings (to echo Wonder Woman’s lasso of truth…)
  • rose gold bangles (yes, I wore an equal number of bangles on each wrist to echo Wonder Woman’s metallic cuffs)

I’m sure all these details were lost on everyone else, but they all made me smile. And of course, I have a style blog outlet to delve into all those details! 😀

And yes, I was mixing metallics with my gold and rose gold tones, but I didn’t let that stop me. This was a good outfit to scoot around town running errands. And I got lots of smiles (and thumbs up) from mothers and daughters wherever we went.

Berry + Burberry | Maxidress + tie belt

If you’re a longtime reader (thank you!), then you’ll know I have frequently worn tie belts. I have made ties into obi-style belts, but I’ve also used single ties as belts, as seen in the collage below.

So on a work day that was cooler and overcast — and knowing I would be in a library with amped-up air-conditioning — I thought a longer-sleeved maxidress would be a good choice.

And hey, I wore a tie to work! 😉

If you’re thinking you haven’t seen this particular tie before, you’re right! My husband recently thrifted this tie on a visit to a local Value Village, and y’all, it’s a Burberry tie. Score! The pattern is a fun plaid with purple, white, orange, and teal stripes, and the Burberry logo —  a knight upon a horse, i.e. the “Equestrian Knight” — is scattered throughout.

So yes, I *literally* borrowed from the boys today. 😉

Red + grey + black work casual | Never Forget tee in grey

I mentioned in my most recent monthly budget post that I had snagged another tee with the “Never Forget” card catalog design. Y’all know that I wore it immediately to work, right? 😉 I wore it for a summer work casual look on a day with cooler temps. (Hence my light cotton jacket, which I actually work all day, because the A/C in the library was on high.)

If you’re wondering, “Uhhhh, what makes this outfit work-appropriate?,” it comes down to the black ankle pants for me. And a library card catalog tee will ALWAYS be work-appropriate if you work in a library. 😉

Admittedly, I work in a VERY casual work environment, so this level of casual might not fly at your workplace. But to me, the ankle pants — which could very easily be black jeans for a regular casual outfit — tip it into the business side of things, while the tee and canvas flats (and the earrings, honestly) make it more casual. I could have also gone with black flats, which would have made it dressier, but I saw an opportunity to add a pattern, and I took it. #NoRegrets

I have been feelin’ the red lately, haven’t I? Red is also on trend this summer, so perhaps I’ve also been subconsciously soaking up the trend. Whatever the case, red is always classic.

And last but not least, a fun outtake! This one came about because I asked Sam if you could see my silver earrings, and he said that he couldn’t. So here y’all go, readers. Enjoy the earrings — and the red pout! 😉

Books, books, books | Little free library + book-print skirt

I haven’t worn my books-and-cats-print skirt in awhile, and since it’s cotton, it’s a decent choice in summer. I went a bit retro pairing the circle skirt with a buttoned-up cardigan and a patent leather skinny belt with a fun heart buckle.

We have quite a few “Little Free Libraries” around town, so I went online to the map of officially registered little free libraries and found a very sweet-looking one in east Tacoma for a fun photo backdrop. (I also wore a variation of this outfit the next day to work at the library. Waste not, want not. 😉 )

Below is a closeup of my turquoise skinny belt with the heart buckle detail. And OF COURSE I had to wear my turquoise stud earrings to tie in with everything. That’s what I do y’all. Color-coordinate.

It’s summer, so that means wearing one of my favorite types of sandals, the flat t-strap sandal. These are my second pair of tan-and-gold t-strap sandals, as I detailed in this prior post.

And if you’re wondering how I managed to wear a three-quarter sleeve cardigan in the summer sunshine and not burn up, it’s because I layered it over a sports bra. No extra tank top layer around the middle, which really cuts down on the sweat factor. One of my favorite clothing tricks!
