Camel camel | What I wore to the Tacoma zoo

If you’re a longtime reader (thank you!), then you know my husband and I like to go to zoos. And today’s outfit post documents what I wore to the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, which is located in the Point Defiance Park on the north tip of Tacoma. It’s a smaller zoo, but they definitely make the most out of what they have.

I didn’t realize the zoo had camels — and a camel ride! — when I picked out my camel tee to wear to the zoo. Style synergy! And yes, the zoo handlers with the camels went gaga over my camel tee! As did Sinbad the camel. 😉

It was unusually hot that day, and I knew we would be walking a lot, so that’s the reason for wearing the most comfortable sandals I own plus the fedora to help shade the sun. The Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium also has an interactive children’s area as well as a carousel.

And yes, Sam and I are “fedorable” together! 😉

The rest of the photos in this post features a mural on the side of what used to the be the local food co-op (sadly closed a few weeks ago) along 6th Avenue. The mural showcases a nature and mountain scene of what I am assuming is Mount Rainier.

Inspired by pattern-mixing stripes | Visiting the Washington state capitol building

During the last couple of weeks of our first summer in Washington, Sam and I took the opportunity to visit our new state capitol building in Olympia. (Did y’all know that Olympia has always been the state capital of Washington? That’s a rarity, as most states have had multiple capital cities.) We love visiting capitals, which we have made a point to do in every state (and country) we’ve lived in.

My outfit that I wore on our day trip was inspired by an outfit I spied in the recent issue of People’s Style Watch, a red + black + white casual outfit from Color Me Courtney. (And wow, her style is so fun!) Pattern-mixing stripes? YES, PLEASE.

You can tell I didn’t do a literal inspiration (although I could have, minus the leather); instead, I just focused on the idea of pattern-mixing stripes and the classic color palette of black, white, and red. Cue up my own take on pattern-mixing stripes, with my striped canvas flats and striped tank dress. I brought in the red with my red cardigan and red lipstick — and there are touches of red in my “banned books” pouch, too! 😀

It’s been said many times, but red lipstick really is a great finishing touch. I’m so glad I’ve embraced a bold red lip! And this is a true red, the L’Oreal Infallible Le Rouge Lipstick in the “Red Ruby” color.

If you’re a longtime reader (thank you!), then you know I’m a goofball. If you’re a new reader, then my outtakes posts will provide proof of this. Sam LOVES to be there to document my goofy side. Like when I was playing around with the lion-head knockers on the front doors of the capitol legislative building. 😀

The grounds and buildings in Olympia were planned as a “capitol campus,” complete with a lake, statues and memorials, fountain, and sunken gardens. Truly lovely!

And the final photo below is at midday (hence the full-on sun) overlooking the lake. I joked that with my iced coffee, I was totally doing the blogger photo cliche of “coffee as accessory”, like I lampooned years ago during my “funny blogger poses” series. So OF COURSE I had to add it to the blog! 😀

Stripes + bicycle paths | Late summer casual

One final note that the poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from August — thanks in advance!

Another casual late summer outfit! With bonus stripes + outtakes! 😀 I wore this outfit to a casual lunch out with a new colleague, before the fall term started.

I almost didn’t take photos of this outfit, as it is VERY casual. But it’s proof that (a) I do wear casual outfits, (b) I wore it, so why not put it on the blog?, and (c) remixing is real life. I have worn this black-and-white striped top a LOT this summer, last seen on the blog here. The bonus stripes come into play via the tuxedo stripe of black running down my jeans (it’s always hard to photograph these jeans, as the denim is so dark), plus the stripe-y effect of the strappy sandals.

The bicycle paths I refer to in the post title are actually on my head scarf — or is it a bandanna? Bandannas were trending this summer, so let’s say it’s a bandanna! 😉 Regardless, I came across this bandanna while packing for our move — it came free in a Portland neighborhood welcome kit, and I had totally forgotten about it! It’s a practical accessory, with a map of bicycle paths in and around Portland, which is a very bike-friendly American city. It’s also a fun way for me to remember our time in Portland. 🙂

The scarf also helped give my casual outing a slight sporty edge.

And I promised bonus outtakes — below is proof of when action shots go WRONG! Sometimes, I will ask Sam to put the camera on the sports setting to try and get some shots in action — like when I’m walking or jumping or twirling — and usually, there are 1 or 2 good shots in the batch. Not so this time! All outtakes! 😀

What I wore for a casual dinner at home with friends

Although I just posted about starting my new job, I’ve still got some casual summer outfits scheduled on the blog! And a quick note that the poll is open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from August — thanks in advance!

This outfit I wore on a late summer evening, while hosting a casual dinner at home with friends. I definitely wanted comfort first — but that’s a given with me! — but, as always, to put a little effort in. (For me, putting a little effort into how I look shows that I care about the people, the event, or the occasion. I wrote more about that here.)

My new paisley tunic top, which I featured in my most recent budget adventures post, fit that sartorial need perfectly for me. And, in general, a print tends to elevate a look.

The horseshoe neckline of this top stands out, so I didn’t want to detract from that. So rather than wearing a necklace, I went for statement earrings instead. My coral bubble earrings tied into both the colors and circular shapes in the fun paisley floral print of the tunic.

By the way, Sam noticed that you can see the back of our new home reflected in my sunglasses! 😎

And, of course, it was perfect that we posed in our new backyard for these photos, since I wore this outfit for a casual evening at home with friends!

Back to school and starting a new job | Blue + yellow

A quick note that the poll is open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from August — thanks in advance!

I wore this outfit last month to a professional organization board meeting (I’m transitioning off the board), which is when these photos were taken. And thanks to my good friend Stephanie, who took these pictures for me — and we took these photos at her house! Yep, that’s her very cool mural behind me.

I also plan on rewearing this outfit today, on my first day at my new job! Why? Because my new college’s colors are blue and yellow! 😀 And this outfit is casually professional and also comfy, a good combination for starting a new school year AND a new job.

My starting point with this outfit was the gingham shirt and the cognac wedges. Then came the navy ankle pants — seriously, these navy ankle pants seem to be my go-to pants for whenever I feel I need a “professional yet still casual” kind of vibe, as seen here, here, and here! Then came the belt, because I thought a little subtle pattern-mixing would be fun. And lastly, the yellow statement necklace, because I thought some contrast was in order.

And yep, I totally did the “blogger tuck,” which means half-tucking and half-untucking your shirt in that oh-so-casual way. I’m not so skilled at the casual part, but I actually liked the way it turned out. And it’s just more comfortable to untuck the back of one’s shirt — mine always seem to come untucked in the back anyway! Have you ever done the “blogger tuck” — intentionally or unintentionally?
