5 more fun facts + 5 outtakes PLUS 5th blogiversary giveaway winners

Last week, I began celebrating my 5th blog anniversary, which culminates today in getting to announce the 5 winners of my 5th blogiversary giveaway. I thought a little extra celebration was in order. 😀 (Are you the winner? Scroll below.)

For a special thank you that ties in with one of my fun facts from last week’s post, I wrote out a thank you message in backwards cursive handwriting! (And provided a mirror image below, so you wouldn’t have to scramble your brain trying to read it or holding your computer or phone up to a mirror.)

It’s funny how my backwards handwriting is basically a window into what my regular handwriting looked like at age 9. My regular handwriting looks very different today, but it’s like time stood still with my backwards handwriting. Weird, huh?

And now for one extra twist, today’s fun facts AND outtakes will all focus on Sam! He’s a huge part of this blog behind the scenes, as he takes almost all of the photos. Plus, he’s quite stylish — and just as goofy as I am in real life! 😀

Fun fact #1 about Sam:

He voluntarily attended a Marine Military camp as a teen and thought seriously during that time about joining the Marines and having a military career. I’ve seen the video of his camp experience, in which they show footage of him getting all his hair buzzed off!

Fun fact #2 about Sam:

And that’s just about the last time he got a major haircut… Sam’s hairstyle — long, curly hair parted in the middle plus a goatee — is essentially the same hairstyle he had when we first met, over 20 years ago. He’s had hair trims, of course, but it’s the same look. I can’t imagine him without a goatee! The beard is relatively recent, only the last couple of years.

Oooooooops, I forgot to post about this outfit that Sam wore earlier this spring. I will correct that oversight next week! In the meantime, enjoy this outtake 😀

Fun fact #3 about Sam:

One of his nicknames during high school was “Cheese Man,” because his jokes were so cheesy. (And continue to be!) He even had a little “Cheese Man” drawing because OF COURSE he was proud of this nickname. 😉

Fun fact #4 about Sam:

Sam courted me by letter. He wrote his first letter to me the very day we met — on handmade paper, no less! — and continued to write letters to me the next few months. (This was also in the dark ages, before cell phones became commonplace.) I still have all those letters. And he still has all the letters that I wrote him! He is a true romantic!

Fun fact #5 about Sam:

This final fun fact is more about us together than just Sam. We got married over 15 years ago in a little one-steeple church in Poetry, Texas. Awwwwwww. ♥

5 fun facts + 5 outtakes to celebrate 5th blogiversary PLUS giveaway for 5 readers

Tomorrow is my fifth blog anniversary (!!!!!), and we are celebrating the occasion today with fun facts and outtakes and a reader giveaway, oh my! One fun fact and one outtake to celebrate each year of style blogging. 😀 You can also read the backstory of my style blog here in this post.

The giveaway is an Out of Print $25 e-gift card to FIVE lucky winners (!!!!!), and it’s an international giveaway that I am personally gifting (meaning, it’s not sponsored) to show my appreciation for all my readers! Scroll down to the bottom of this post for giveaway entry info. The giveaway opens TODAY and is open for entries through next Thursday, April 13th.

Fun fact #1

I taught myself to write backwards in cursive when I was young, at age 9. At that age, I was obsessed with handwriting and graphology (analysis of handwriting patterns and characteristics), and I thought it would be a fun trick to know how to write backward in cursive. It’s not a particularly useful trick, however. 😉

Fun fact #2

I taught myself how to type on a typewriter at age 10. When my paternal grandmother passed away when I was young, I also got her travel typewriter (in addition to a lot of her jewelry, as seen here and here). My older brother was learning how to type in junior high at the time, so I thought why not give it a go myself?

And thankfully, typing IS a useful trick. 🙂

Fun fact #3

In third grade, almost every piece of clothing in my closet was pink — a bright, eye-searing Pepto-Bismal kind of pink. And I looooooooooved it! I had gotten a multi-piece wardrobe set from the JCPenney or Sears catalog, and every single item was that shade of pink. I also had pink shoes! ♥♥♥

Fun fact #4

I am weirded out by photographs or ads that use photographs of animals whose limbs are human. So essentially superimposed animal heads on humans. It FREAKS me out, y’all. {Shiver}

Fun fact #5

I had verrrrrrrrrrrry long hair for most of my childhood, not intentionally cutting it until junior high. (I had to have my hair trimmed in 3rd grade, but that was because of a gum accident. Life happens, y’all.) My hair was so long, I could sit on it! I also remember how liberating it felt in junior high when I cut it all off! And I’ve obviously never looked back… 😉

Gift card giveaway

To celebrate my upcoming 5th blog anniversary, I am offering 5 lucky winners each a $25 e-gift card to one of my favorite online stores, Out of Print, which offers literary-themed t-shirts, tote bags, coffee mugs, and other items. This giveaway is NOT sponsored — these are gift cards I will purchase myself for the purpose of thanking y’all for your readership!

Out Of Print Gift Card

Out of Print has items with artwork from classic works, like Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (I have the purple P&P tee, seen here), literary terms (my husband owns the “Plot” tee), as well as collections like the Library Collection (I have the library stamp tee, seen here; library card socks, seen here; and library card pouch from this collection, seen here) and the Banned Books Collection (I also have the banned books pouch, seen here, and socks, seen here).

I also didn’t know about this when I decided on this giveaway, but it just so happens that Out of Print is getting a jump start on celebrating National Library Week (April 9-15) by donating 10% of its Library Collection proceeds through April 9th to the Liberation Library in Chicago. You can read all about it here.

His and hers | Celebrating our anniversary with JORD wood watches + GIVEAWAY

Today is a special day, as it officially marks the 20th anniversary for me and the love of my life. My husband, Sam, and I actually celebrate two anniversaries:  February 1, how long we’ve been together, as well as August 1, our wedding anniversary.

We celebrated our anniversary this past weekend and toasted to when we first met:  Sam was in his third year at college, and I was a high school senior interviewing for an academic scholarship on his college campus. Our paths crossed because he was the editor of the college newspaper, which was hosting a party for the scholarship interviewees. Long story short, we’ve been together ever since. As I like to joke, I got both the scholarship AND the guy. 😉

Our anniversary brunch outing this past weekend also turned out to be a perfect occasion to wear our respective his and hers JORD wood watches. After all, love is timeless, yes? ♥ ♥ ♥

Librarian for Life + Style | His and hers, JORD wood watch review

Full disclosure: This is a post in collaboration with JORD Wood Watches, and my husband received a wood watch of his choice in exchange for a review post on my style blog. As always, we are 100% honest about sharing our personal thoughts and experiences with you.

And BONUS! As a special Valentine’s Day GIVEAWAY for my readers, you can enter to win a $100 e-gift code that you can put toward a JORD watch of your own. Plus, all all those who enter will receive $25 e-gift code. Win-win! Click here to skip to the giveaway info at the bottom of this post.

You might remember when I first received my JORD wood watch, back in June 2015. I’ve worn my dark sandalwood watch several times since, most recently seen on the blog in this post from November. When JORD recently released their new Conway line of men’s watches, I was excited for Sam to try one out. He had been wanting a JORD wood watch of his own! So yes, I got to spoil my sweetie for our anniversary. ♥ And a wood watch would definitely make for a unique and memorable Valentine’s Day gift.

Sam chose the Conway watch in sandalwood and burgundy, a very cool watch and color combination.

Sam is usually the one behind the scenes taking photos of me and my outfits, so it was fun for me to play the photographer for a day. You can check out more of Sam’s style here.

And I think y’all will agree with me when I say it’s a handsome watch for a handsome man!

Q&A

I also thought it would be fun to do a Q&A with Sam, to record his own perspective and thoughts about his new watch.

Jen:  You’ve seen me wear my JORD watch almost two years now. How do you feel about JORD watches in general?

Sam:  I really like that they are distinctive because they’re made of wood, and I like that the wood is sustainably and ethically sourced. They are unique watches for sure.

Jen:  Why did you choose this style of watch? What about this watch appealed to you?

Sam:  I liked everything in this particular line, the Conway line. It’s clean, classic, and versatile, and this particular color combination [sandalwood and burgundy] will go with just about everything I have. The cross-hatching detail down the band is nice, and it matches the cross-hatching on the watch’s face. I also like that they’re easily adjustable with the extra links. [All JORD watches come with a couple of extra links, just in case.]

Jen:  This Conway men’s watch is JORD’s first chronograph watch for men. How do you like the chronograph stopwatch feature?

Sam:  It’s a nice bonus. I also realized that it will help me as a writer. When I read work my work in public, I need to be aware of how long the piece reads. The chronograph is a convenient way to time myself when I’m reading.

Jen:  Can you describe your reaction when you first opened the box and saw the watch?

Sam:  The packaging is classy. I like the wood box it comes in, and that it has this little pillow that the watch wraps around. It feels like I finally have a grown-up watch!

Jen:  You’ve been wearing the watch a few days now. How does it feel?

Sam:  I do feel it’s important to note that this is the first time I’ve regularly worn a watch in 22 years, so it took a bit of time for me to get used to wearing one again. There’s something kind of traditional about coming in the door, hanging up your keys, and taking off your watch. These are the rituals of unwinding for the day, and I like tapping into that.

Jen:  Would you recommend this watch?

Sam:  Absolutely. For anyone who likes watches, yes. It is a bit spendy [$229 for this particular style of watch], but the quality is worth it. You are getting what you pay for.

Jen:  Any last thoughts or anything you’d like to share?

Sam:  Two things. One, I’ve always been a little jealous of your watch, so it’s nice that we both have one now. [Hah!] Two, I’d like to suggest the idea of JORD venturing out and creating pocket watches. If they ever started making wood pocket watches, I’d be first in line to buy one!

His and hers

We also took some photos together, to showcase our his-and-hers JORD wood watches. There’s a common saying that the longer couples are together, the more they start to look like each other. As we both independently chose JORD watches in sandalwood, I think that saying is coming true for us! 😉

And can I also get a “Hello!” for how stylish Sam is?! (And yes, he totally put together this outfit on his own.) I mean:  hello layers, hello overcoat, hello fedora, hello awesome new sneakers, and hello cool watch. 😀 😀 😀

Let’s have one last shot of Sam, shall we? You’re welcome.

And no worries, I’ll be back tomorrow with more details of the outfit that I wore on our anniversary outing.

Fourth blog anniversary + gift card giveaway winner

This past Friday, April 8, officially marked my fourth blog anniversary, but today I get to announce the winner of my blogiversary giveaway, so I thought a little extra celebration was justified. 😀

First of all, I would like to thank all my readers who left a comment on my blogiversary giveaway post. (Are you the winner? Scroll below.) It feels so strange sometimes to think that I take and post pictures of my outfits and put them on the internet. And this is something I have done on a daily basis for 4+ years now. It sounds so bonkers to say that out loud, and I seriously wonder at times if it means anything to anyone outside of myself, my husband, and my mom. (Hi, Mom! Love you!) And all of your lovely, warm, and supportive comments about why you read this blog — and how you have been inspired by my personal style journey — just made my day. My week. My month. My year. Truly. I learned a lot about why y’all keep coming back — keep the color bar on the side menu, keep posting work outfits, keep focusing on budget-friendly fashion, keep the humor and outtakes, and keep doing reviews! — and I feel truly blessed to have such a loyal readership. I consider my style blog a smaller, niche blog, and I like it that way. I’m glad y’all do, too. ♥♥♥♥

Thanks for listening, and thanks for reading.

Below is a collage of an outfit from each year, thus far, of blogging. It’s especially interesting to see how my hair has changed the last 4+ years!

Original posts:  Year one (July 2012)  //  Year two (December 2013)  //
Year three (October 2014)  //  Year four (December 2015)

I’ve experienced major milestones along the way during these past four years of this style blogging adventure, including starting a new full-time job as a faculty librarian; getting tenure; buying our first home; and getting my teeth straightened with Invisalign clear braces. Who knows what else is in store? Hope y’all will stick around with me for the 5th blogiversary!

And now without further ado…

Blog anniversary giveaway winner

… the winner of my blog anniversary giveaway, a $50 Macy’s gift card that I purchased myself, saved up from taking surveys. There were 50 actual entries, which I entered on a spreadsheet to keep track of them all. (Putting the entries on a separate spreadsheet also allowed me to respond to all your lovely comments on the post itself!) I then used the random number generator on the Random.org website to select the winning entry.

The winning entry was #17, which turned out to be Karen Strand from the She Thought She Could blog. Congratulations, Karen! I will be in touch shortly so I can send you the $50 Macy’s gift card. 🙂
