Follow your heart times two

Today’s outfit started with my shoes, a pair of patent leather pumps with velvet bows that I scored at an estate sale, which I mentioned in last month’s budget post. I thought they would look cool paired with my chevron tights, and the rest of the outfit came together from there.

There’s actually a lot of texture in this outfit, including the velvet bows on the shoes, the crocheted tights, and the nubby texture of the pencil skirt.

Hello, patent leather and velvet! True love, y’all. ♥

And the day I decided to wear this outfit, Sam came home with a painted rock he found while out and about. (There’s a “Tacoma Rocks” movement to paint rocks and then leave them around town to brighten people’s days. The first “Tacoma Rocks” we found is featured here in this post.)

So it was meant to be that I wore my “Follow Your Heart” sweater on the same day Sam found a rock painted with the same sentiment. There are not enough heart emoticons in the world to describe this serendipity. ♥♥♥

And finally, a look at the overcoat I wore over this work outfit. More burgundy!

SIA interpretation: Roots

It’s time for my interpretation of the final Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge for 2017! For this style challenge, SIA co-founder Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey chose the inspiration artwork.

The inspiration:

Salazar picked an amazing photo from a series called “Roots” by Spanish photographer Miguel Vallinas, a series which depicts people in outfits with flowers for their heads. Salazar was drawn to the series for its striking — and stylish! — effect, and you can learn more about the meaning of the series here in this article.

There are a lot of photos in the series, which you can see more of here, but Salazar chose the “Number 24” photo, a combo that includes a blue gingham shirt, a long cardigan, and a head of purple-colored flowers, all against a black backdrop. In the collage below is a detail from the inspiration photo, but you can see the full photo here.

Interpretation:

I recreated the outfit pretty closely but added a twist when it came to the flowers in the inspiration photo. I also wore a denim skirt instead of jeans, and an overcoat instead of a long cardigan. All the major colors are there: beige, blue, purple, green, and denim.

I brought in the floral in a subtle way through my cloisonné earrings, which also brought in the black and green tones. (The purple tones of the flowers are represented in my purple sweater vest.) You can’t see the earrings too well in the full outfit photos, so I included some closeups below. (You’ve also seen these earrings before on the blog here, here, and here.)

The black painted wall as the backdrop came out looking more grey, due to the foggy weather. But that’s what I was going for, a black background. The blue of my gingham button-front shirt and my tights really pops, right?

And even though it was foggy, I wore my sunglasses for our quick photo shoot in order to sort of “hide” my face — a little nod to the flowers that substitute for the head in the inspiration photo!

By the way, if you’re wondering if this outfit looks familiar, it’s because it’s basically a mash-up of two previous outfits, as you can see below:

Royal blue + kitty cats, too

Can you guess the starting point for today’s outfit?

Librarian for Life + Style | Royal blue + kitty cats, too

It wasn’t the skirt — rather, it was the blue leggings that I wore as tights! This is one of my favorite clothing tricks during fall and winter, to wear leggings as tights. They’re warmer than tights and provide more coverage and hold, plus they’re easier to pull on.

Here’s how the rest of the outfit came together in my head:

  • Next came the blue cardigan, as it coordinated with the tights.
  • Then came the cognac boots, as I thought my black riding boots would look too harsh.
  • Then I thought of my cat-print skirt, as it incorporates cognac and orange-y tones that would go well with the boots.
  • Then came the cognac belt — I thought my blue patent leather belt would look odd right next to the blue cardigan. I could have also untucked my cardigan, but I decided I wanted a tucked-in look that day. It just depends on the day, as y’all know I’m a fan of untucking my tops.
  • Then I decided on my topaz drop earrings, to bring out more earth tones.
  • I went with my new cognac, black, and white tote bag because it tied together the black and cognac tones in the skirt.
  • At the last minute, I added my blue beanie, which I thought would be a fun finishing touch — and an unexpected one!

It was super windy this day, so thank goodness I was wearing tights! Sam was able to catch a few fun pics that show how the wind affected my skirt. 😀Librarian for Life + Style | Royal blue + kitty cats, too

Both the beanie and bow belt are accessories I got while living overseas in the UAE. It’s been awhile since you’ve seen this beanie, which surfaced in an early post here, and here in my travel post to Amsterdam. The bow belt you have seen lots of times, like here and here, and it actually came with my cat-print dress, most recently seen here (although I NEVER wear this bow belt with my cat-print dress!).

Remixing my oversized navy sweater with mint + animal print

Today’s outfit is a casual one I wore on a mildly chilly weekend afternoon. I have to admit, I have been wearing this oversized sweater A LOT this fall (I received it c/o Tobi Clothing, and you can read my review of this sweater here.)

And even in casual outfits, I always seem to find my way into pattern-mixing. Once you start mixing patterns, you can’t stop! I’m actually mixing three different patterns here:  my scarf has a pattern of text (from “Anne of Green Gables,” one of my favorite books); my flats are animal print; and my tote bag has an ikat-style print. Yet you almost don’t notice that I’m pattern-mixing, as each pattern is visually spaced out (top, middle, and bottom of my outfit). Also, the patterns on my tote bag and scarf are quite subtle and neutral — and animal print is another neutral in my book. 😉

I have been wanting to take pics in front of this cool mural in the “Dome District” part of Tacoma. It’s on the side of a business, and I love its simple and bold graphics and lines.

In the photo below, I love how you can really see the shape of my (freshly trimmed) haircut. With the spiky edges of this short cut, the silver threads in my dark brown hair really pop, don’t they? (I call them “my silvers,” by the way. No grey hair for me! 😉 )

I also wore my silver-and-peridot hoop earrings, as the light green peridot complemented my green scarf. I do love to pair green and navy together! You can read my review of these Anjolee earrings here.

SIA interpretation: Starry silhouette

A quick reminder to please vote for your favorite outfit of mine from last month — thanks in advance!

It’s time for my interpretation for this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, chosen by Erin @ Loop Looks.

SIA inspiration:

Erin chose this “celestial” photo illustration because she just put up her Christmas tree which has a “celestial” theme, with ornaments of suns, moons or stars. The photo illustration, created by M_Caballero, is in the public domain via Pixabay, which you can see in more detail here.

Interpretation:

My starting point was the dominant color scheme of purple, black, and grey, which I interpreted through my combination of purple overcoat, black-and-white dotted pants, and grey-and-black ombre scarf.

My pants, which look greyish from afar, are actually black with a white polka-dotted design, which you can only see up close — that was to mimic the “stars in the sky” through the tiny polka dots. And the finishing touch was my opal stud earrings, which felt like a subtle way to get in a bit of celestial iridescence that’s in the photo illustration.

And OF COURSE I had to get photos on swings, to mimic the silhouette of the person on the swings in the artwork. 😀 We took these photos at a local park and playground.
