Remixing my oversized navy sweater with mint + animal print

Today’s outfit is a casual one I wore on a mildly chilly weekend afternoon. I have to admit, I have been wearing this oversized sweater A LOT this fall (I received it c/o Tobi Clothing, and you can read my review of this sweater here.)

And even in casual outfits, I always seem to find my way into pattern-mixing. Once you start mixing patterns, you can’t stop! I’m actually mixing three different patterns here:  my scarf has a pattern of text (from “Anne of Green Gables,” one of my favorite books); my flats are animal print; and my tote bag has an ikat-style print. Yet you almost don’t notice that I’m pattern-mixing, as each pattern is visually spaced out (top, middle, and bottom of my outfit). Also, the patterns on my tote bag and scarf are quite subtle and neutral — and animal print is another neutral in my book. 😉

I have been wanting to take pics in front of this cool mural in the “Dome District” part of Tacoma. It’s on the side of a business, and I love its simple and bold graphics and lines.

In the photo below, I love how you can really see the shape of my (freshly trimmed) haircut. With the spiky edges of this short cut, the silver threads in my dark brown hair really pop, don’t they? (I call them “my silvers,” by the way. No grey hair for me! 😉 )

I also wore my silver-and-peridot hoop earrings, as the light green peridot complemented my green scarf. I do love to pair green and navy together! You can read my review of these Anjolee earrings here.

SIA interpretation: Starry silhouette

A quick reminder to please vote for your favorite outfit of mine from last month — thanks in advance!

It’s time for my interpretation for this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, chosen by Erin @ Loop Looks.

SIA inspiration:

Erin chose this “celestial” photo illustration because she just put up her Christmas tree which has a “celestial” theme, with ornaments of suns, moons or stars. The photo illustration, created by M_Caballero, is in the public domain via Pixabay, which you can see in more detail here.

Interpretation:

My starting point was the dominant color scheme of purple, black, and grey, which I interpreted through my combination of purple overcoat, black-and-white dotted pants, and grey-and-black ombre scarf.

My pants, which look greyish from afar, are actually black with a white polka-dotted design, which you can only see up close — that was to mimic the “stars in the sky” through the tiny polka dots. And the finishing touch was my opal stud earrings, which felt like a subtle way to get in a bit of celestial iridescence that’s in the photo illustration.

And OF COURSE I had to get photos on swings, to mimic the silhouette of the person on the swings in the artwork. 😀 We took these photos at a local park and playground.

Still time to participate in SIA this week!

Everyone — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! — is welcome to participate in SIA challenges. Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies and flat lays are also just fine — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator, Erin at looplooks@gmail.com, by tomorrow, Dec. 5th, to be included in the round-up on her blog, Loop Looks.

I’ll see y’all over at Erin’s style blog for the round-up on Wednesday!

Burgundy brogues + plaid shirtdress

I felt really great in today’s outfit, my white-and-grey plaid shirtdress, which I’ve worn before here with my grey ankle boots. This time, I wore the shirtdress with grey heather tights, a textured silver metallic belt, and burgundy patent leather brogues. It’s such a classic silhouette, this fit-and-flare shirtdress, but the details of the brogues and the metallic belt provide some unexpected details up close.

A fit-and-flare dress practically begs to be twirled in, right?! Right.

I wore my burgundy overcoat on this chilly fall day, which provided a fantastic pop of color to my outfit — and it also really does pop against the backdrop of orange-y fall foliage!

And last but not least, this is the fourth and final post in my (informal) series of taking pics along East 34th Street Bridge, a fun way to capture the seasons here in Tacoma. So here you go, fall foliage along East 34th Street Bridge in east Tacoma! See here for winter picshere for spring pics, and here for summer pics along this same bridge.

Thanksgiving retrospective

Happy Thanksgiving to my American readers in the U.S. and abroad!

Sam and I hibernated this year for Thanksgiving, which is one of our very favorite holidays to celebrate. We are both off today, the Friday after Thanksgiving, so I thought it would be fun to take a quick look back over the years and compile past outfits I’ve worn on or around the Thanksgiving holidays.

Thanksgiving 2012:

The day before Thanksgiving this year, we finished closing on our Portland home! So our Thanksgiving dinner was literally the first meal we had in the first home we bought together.

Here’s what I wore when we finished closing on the home:

And here’s what I wore on the day we started moving in, on actual Thanksgiving day:

Thanksgiving 2013:

Here’s what I wore for Thanksgiving in 2013… and if you visit the original post, linked below, you’ll see I remixed this fashion-swapped dress for a “Thanksgiving two-fer”!

Thanksgiving 2014:

And a different kind of “Thanksgiving two-fer” for 2014! Sam and I broke out the tweeds and hats around the Thanksgiving holidays that year:

Thanksgiving 2015:

We planned a Friends-inspired Thanksgiving in 2015, which included a flay lay of what I wore on the day!

Thanksgiving 2016:

I wore my then-new burgundy cargo vest for Thanksgiving last year — which I also wore to assemble my early Christmas “Minibox” gift over the mini-break!

After compiling this Thanksgiving-themed retrospective, it’s easy to see how I definitely go for cozy sweaters or scarves and layering, but my color palette is pretty varied. Interesting.

How did you celebrate Thanksgiving this year? Please leave a comment and share!

SIA interpretation: Native American mural weaving

It’s time for my personal interpretation of the new Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge that I curated this go-round. Since this SIA go-round nearly coincides with the upcoming American holiday of Thanksgiving, I wanted to choose a work that honored Native American perspectives and artistry.

SIA inspiration pick:

I chose a breathtaking new mural in Tacoma entitled “Working Forward, Weaving Anew,” designed by lead artists Esteban Camacho Steffensen and Jessilyn Brinkerhoff. It was painted this past summer, and it’s part of a new dedication by Tacoma in supporting local Native American voices in public art. You can read more about the mural online here and here.

Here is one photo, and portion, of this large-scale mural:

My interpretation:

Living in Tacoma, of course I was lucky enough to pose for photos in front of the mural itself! I focused on the colors, combining different shades of blue and beige, as well as combining different textures. I layered a nubby-textured navy blue sleeveless dress over a beige turtleneck, navy tights, and bronze Mary Jane heels. I then layered my tattersall cape-like short coat over that, to add warmth and depth to the look.

My accessories rounded out the outfit and added extra textures:  a royal blue patent leather skinny belt; gold earrings in the shape of a ribbon tied with a knot; and a silk dupioni clutch that looks gold in one light with hints of light blue in different light.

Instead of spiking my short hair up or sweeping the bangs off my face, I instead blow-dried it into a sleeker look and smoothed down my bangs. It’s fun to play with my hair, even when it’s short!

I also put my gold ribbon knot earrings in the second, upper hole in my ears, so you could see them better. My paternal grandmother used to make lots of jewelry, including these simple yet striking earrings. I’ve also worn these earrings as a pair of brooches here.
