Remixing my heart print dress with a burgundy sweater + booties

I am all about the remixing! Earlier this fall, I had subtly remixed my heart print dress, wanting to highlight how small changes can make a difference. This time, I’m going bold with the remix — but still keeping it within the same burgundy color family.

I also am lately all about layering long sweaters over dresses, like I did last week with my SIA interpretation outfit.

I guess I’m also technically pattern-mixing in this outfit, with my chevron tights and my heart locket print dress. There are so many ways to mix prints and patterns!

I really liked wearing this outfit. It was comfortable, and I felt good in it. The long sweater over the dress is an unexpected, and slightly ’20s-retro, silhouette, but the tights, asymmetrical collar, and the booties provide modern touches.

Print-mixing gingham with a novelty print sweater

I have worn the navy + pink gingham button-front top I bought earlier this fall, but I realized it hadn’t made it to the blog yet. Time to correct that! I have worn it a couple of times underneath my “Follow Your Heart” novelty print sweater, as a way to subtly mix prints.

I wore the button-front and sweater combo with my olive cargo ankle pants, for another subtly holiday-appropriate color combination. My burgundy patent leather brogues finished off this masculine-inspired, casual work look.

The backdrop is a nearby park and playfield, which we stopped at on our way to mail off Christmas cards and presents, before I had to go to work. I thought it would be fun backdrop — and I have always loved the swings!

Wearing a tunic dress as a top | Bold red + black

A quick note that there is still time to enter my holiday GIVEAWAY for a chance to win your own teeth whitening kit!

This is the second time this fall that I’ve worn my black full skirt to turn a tunic into a top. Back in October, I tucked my newly thrifted paisley top into this black knit skirt; this time, I wore this skirt over my red + black tunic dress. The bold red + black color combination of this outfit also looks subtly holiday-appropriate, as we get closer to the Christmas holidays and the official start of the winter season.

Here’s a side-by-side comparison of how I’ve worn this tunic dress:

2015 post:  Red and black statement tunic

I didn’t get too fussy with this outfit, as the bold color scheme and graphic print do so much work on their own. I belted the skirt with a red skinny belt, and I wore red lipstick to keep the focus up top. The bottom of this outfit is all black, including my new black Spanx leggings as tights!

It was quite cold that day, and I was very warm in my tunic and skirt layers, as well as the leggings. And this skirt from eShakti continues to be a VIP in my closet. It’s warm and comfortable (and machine-washable, thanks to it being knit), and its classic shape will never go out of style! Plus, pockets!

SIA interpretation: Railroad sunset

A quick note to please enter my holiday GIVEAWAY for a chance to win your own teeth whitening kit!

It’s time for my interpretation of this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge! Remember, this is the final SIA challenge for 2016, and there is STILL TIME to participate! Participating is easy, and all are welcome, bloggers and non-bloggers. Just send a photo of an outfit inspired by this week’s inspiration artwork — selfies, flat lays, and collages also just fine — to me by tonight, 10 p.m. PST. I’ll post the round-up on my blog tomorrow.

I chose Edward Hopper’s 1929 painting, Railroad Sunset, and when I saw this painting, I thought of the Murray Morgan Bridge in Tacoma. It’s not a railroad, obviously, but there is a little building atop the bridge construction that reminded me of the little building tower in silhouette in Hopper’s painting.

See what I mean? So I was determined to take pictures down by the Murray Morgan Bridge. And even though it was heavily raining by the time we *did* get to take photos, by golly, we succeeded! (Thank goodness my new phone, the Samsung Galaxy S7, is water-resistant.)

And it wasn’t quite sunset when we were able to take photos, but my striped dress took care of that. Yep, that’s right, I’m once again doing my trick of wearing a dress as a skirt! 😀

My first thought was to wear this striped dress, which has stripes in every color of the inspiration painting. My next thought was to go a bit retro-inspired, as Hopper’s paintings always evoke the late ’20s and early ’30s time period to me. So I turned my fit-and-flare dress into more of a drop-waist skirt by layering my long navy sweater over it. My brown cloche, bronze Mary Jane heels, and long necklaces completed the retro-inspired look.

I had to spotlight some pics of the quite striking Murray Morgan Bridge, which was built in 1913. The bridge is the work of the inventor of the modern lift bridge, John A. L. Waddell (1856-1934). It was rehabilitated in 2011-2013, just in time for its 100th birthday!

I also did a fun vintage filter on this, to make my retro-inspired inspiration outfit look more retro! 😀

And BONUS, last but not least… I mimicked the Charleston dance while we took pics, as it was a popular dance during the 1920s. OF COURSE Sam captured these outtakes, which I strung together for an animated video! Enjoy!

Remixing my pink sweater with cargo vests | Pink + burgundy

One last reminder that poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit of mine from November. Thanks in advance!

It might go without saying that I loooooooove my new burgundy cargo vest, but it doesn’t hurt to visually demonstrate that on the blog, right? 😉

I was inspired to pair my burgundy cargo vest with my pink sweater after seeing again the post when I paired this pink sweater with my olive cargo vest, back in 2013. That remains one of my favorite outfits, so I reimagined it for this fall season. Remixing = real life.

And true to my color-coordinated spirit, I wore my rain boots because (a) the pink bits on the back of the boots matched my pink sweater, and (b) it was a rainy day. I am also very practical! 😉
