Sequined tank + ankle pants dressy casual remix

The transition time between summer and fall can be a magical time in the Pacific Northwest, as temps tend to hover in the 70s, with a combination of sunshine and cooler breezes. It was such an “Indian summer” type of day that Sam and I decided to enjoy happy hour for an impromptu and low-key date night. I was already wearing my navy ankle pants + pewter t-strap sandals for a prep day at work (before the fall quarter officially begins next week!), so I just traded in my top for a sequined tank, and I was ready to go!

I’ve gone for this “dressy casual” combo before:  a sequined tank + ankle pants + sparkly/metallic sandals. Here’s a version of that combo I wore back in 2015, compared with my recent date night outfit. Same outfit foundation and types of garments, but different versions. Still works!

Then vs. Now:

short bob // short pixie
white & silver sequined tank // grey & silver sequined tank
black ankle pants // navy ankle pants
black t-strap sparkly sandals // pewter t-strap metallic sandals
brightly colored clutch // silver sequined clutch

If you’re wondering if this tank top is new — it isn’t! I thrifted this awhile ago at my favorite resale shop in Portland, as seen in this monthly round-up post from January 2016 — I scored this tank for only $6! But I do believe it’s the first time it’s been featured on the blog in an actual outfit post. Never too late, eh? 😉

The sequins are in subtle stripes, with a strip of matte sequins in-between strips of shinier sequins. It’s kind of a subtle effect in pics, but it is way more sparkly in person. I also like that the sequins don’t go all the way around — the back is a soft grey, as you can see in the pic above. The tank is more flowy because of this, and it’s more practical since I don’t have to worry about the sequins rubbing against the backs of things when I sit down. Win-win!

I used hair paste to fluff up the front part of my pixie a bit, as you can see in the closeup above. I kept my accessories simple and silver, including simple silver bar earrings and a silver sequined clutch. With an all-neutral outfit of grey, silver, and navy, I brought in a pop of color via my darker lipstick.

The mural backdrop is on the side of a local arts center in the Hilltop region of Tacoma, on the east side. I love the dynamic, 3D Greek key design of this mural!

Black + teal summer date outfit

Last Friday, I highlighted what Sam wore for a summer date night — it’s only fair that I share what I wore that night, right?! 🙂

I’ve worn these teal ankle pants with black accents before, as seen here. This time, I tried the trick I had done before with this V-necked tee — I turned the tee around to have the V-neck in the back!

I also borrowed my husband’s black fedora, as the teal stripe in its ribbon totally coordinated with my ankle pants. 🙂

The backdrop is the Puget Sound, along Ruston Way. We discovered a floor mural of the geographic region along the Point Ruston shopping and recreation area. I had to get a photo of the Tacoma part of the mural — and of course, I had to scale Mt. Rainier! 😀

Casual Friday Pride

I showcased this new tee in last month’s monthly budget post, and I wore it on a day in which I knew I would be attending an art gallery reception immediately after work. So this is another example of a “day-to-night” outfit for me.

I seriously got SO MANY compliments on this outfit from work colleagues, which I wasn’t expecting. Tacoma Pride!

We took these photos at a little Japanese friendship garden. I’ve been wanting to take photos here for awhile — I’m so glad it worked out this day!

I was also really pleased that I was finally able to get a good photo of these tuxedo-stripe jeans, so you could get a sense of how the black stripe looks against the dark denim, without me having to lighten the photo.

It was a happy accident that I happened to be wearing my “Rockstar” nail polish while wearing my Tacoma Pride tee. This nail polish is bright pink but includes all colors of the rainbow if you look close! 😀

Day-to-night holiday casual | Wearing scarves for 4th of July

Happy 4th of July to my American readers!

When my new red and navy blanket scarf c/o JustFashionNow arrived last week — in time for our Independence Day celebrations and detailed in last week’s monthly budget adventures post — I had the idea of doing a scarf inspiration post for the holiday.

Up here in the PNW, the temps tend to drop overnight, so it can get quite cool in the evenings. So I’m doing a day-to-night type of post with two different kinds of scarves, a square scarf and a blanket scarf.

For day:

First up, wearing a smaller, lighter scarf for the daytime.

I decided to wear my vintage, polka-dotted red-white-and-blue square scarf around my neck, but there are lots of other ways to wear a square scarf if it’s just too hot where you live to put anything around your neck.

You could also tie a scarf:

  • around a hat
  • around your hair
  • looped around a purse or bag handles
  • around your wrist for a funky take on a bracelet
  • around your waist as a belt, if the scarf is long enough
  • looped around a belt loop on jeans or shorts, if your scarf is shorter

You can also visit a prior post I did illustrating different ways to wear square scarves.

And if it’s hotter where you live, you could totally go with a plain white tank or tee and/or denim shorts. The foundation of my outfit is just a simple pair of jeans and a white top, with the accessories bringing a patriotic flavor to the look.

Details:

For night:

As I said before, it can get quite chilly on summer evenings up here — which I love about the PNW! — so taking a blanket scarf with you if you plan staying out at night to watch fireworks or hang out with loved ones — is a practical thing. And why not infuse your practicality with a fun pattern? Particularly with a double-sided blanket scarf! 😀

Here’s the darker blue side of my new blanket scarf:

And the lighter blue side of the scarf:

Now for a closeup of the graphic pattern on the blanket scarf:

And Sam managed to catch a couple of awesome action shots while I was flipping the ends of the scarf around my shoulders. It’s like twirling for scarves! 😀

Do you like wearing scarves in different ways? How do you wear different types of scarves? Please leave a comment and share!

For all my readers, hope your Tuesday in general is going great! ♥

Never forget | Library tee remix

A quick note that the poll is still open to vote for your favorite outfit of April — thanks in advance!

I wore this outfit twice, once for a book reading at a local library, and then a slight variation for the next work day. And I wore some of my library-themed gear, because OF COURSE. This card catalog tee is one that my husband picked up me for years ago at a writer’s conference, and it still elicits chuckles from people who see it — and not just from librarians! 🙂

Here are a few ways I’ve worn this tee over the years on the blog. Interesting to note that I obviously prefer pairing this tee with blazers + jeans! Uh, at least the blazers are of different colors? Yeah, let’s go with that. 😉

This go-round, I paired the tee with black skinny jeans and a taupe blazer and patent leather wedges. Everything neutral except for the pop of turquoise in the tee and the pop of yellow in the library card clutch.

NEVER FORGET. And many people like to share their personal (and usually fond) memories of using old library card catalogs. I join in those reminiscences, as I remember helping my mom convert from the old library card catalog to a computerized system!

The backdrop is the Charlotte Mottet branch of the Tacoma Public Library system, one of the smaller branches in the system. But it’s in a very sweet, renovated brick building that’s had two additions on each side of the original central section. The entrance is my favorite part, with the iron scroll work and the brick design around the round doorway.

It started raining when we were taking pics, so we took the opportunity to take some photos under some trees, beside a lamp post. So it’s raining, there’s a lamp post… can y’all guess what I started doing???

Sam guessed right away:  “Are you doing the scene from Singin’ in the Rain?!”

My response? “Yessssssssssss.” 😀 😀 😀
