Happy Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, for my American readers!
It’s a new year, and we are embarking on a new Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge! I’m super excited for this first challenge, as I chose an inspiration painting by a local artist!
I chose a painting by local tattoo artist Bismark Pinera, a painting that graced the cover of a newly published regional literary compilation, Creative Colloquy Volume 4, available online here. (Creative Colloquy is a literary site and community here in Tacoma.) I attended the launch celebration for the new Creative Colloquy compilation, and I fell IN LOVE with the cover art. I immediately contacted the artist, and Pinera graciously granted permission to use and showcase his artwork for this challenge. 😀
The artist, Bismark Pinera, is a tattoo artist and craftsman living in the PNW, with over 10 years of professional tattooing experience and has served as a guest artist in studios around the world, including Austria, Mexico, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, and U.S. cities like Austin, New York, Chicago, and Seattle. He is committed to supporting local arts communities and small businesses whenever possible, and recently, he’s been collaborating with authors of the South Puget Sound to create artwork for locally published works, including Creative Colloquy. You can also see more of his tattoo artwork here on his Instagram profile.
How beautiful is this painting?! It’s so full of details and colors yet somehow still comes across as subtle and classical. I also love the mix of nature details relating to the Pacific Northwest, with Mt. Rainier in the background and the water and trees and acorns. You could go really neutral with your outfit, since there is a lot of grey and white in the painting; or you could go with pops of colors; or you could pick a bright color or two in the artwork (like goldenrod or red or turquoise) to focus on. Hopefully, there’s a lot of scope there for interpretation and inspiration here for a lot of sartorial inspiration!
How to participate in SIA:
Everyone — bloggers, non-bloggers, all genders, all ages, even pets! — is welcome to participate. Just send a pic of an outfit — selfies, even bathroom or mirror selfies, and flat lays are also just fine — inspired by this week’s SIA artwork to this week’s curator — that’s me! — at firstname.lastname@example.org by next Tuesday, Jan. 23rd, by 10 p.m. Pacific Standard Time (PST). I will then post the first SIA round-up of 2018 on my blog, the following day, on Wednesday, Jan. 24th.
