Audrey Hepburn style inspiration: All black + silver hoop earrings

After my new shorter pixie haircut plus receiving my mom’s early birthday gift of reproductions of Audrey Hepburn’s earrings she wore in Sabrina and in publicity shots during that time period in the mid-1950s, I had an idea… why not recreate some of the outfits she wore during that time period with those earrings? I already had a Pinterest board full of inspiration!

The point of this mini-series of inspiration — this is the first of three such related posts this week — is not about copying or comparing myself to Audrey Hepburn. Rather, it’s about celebrating and appreciating Audrey Hepburn’s enduring style inspiration. It took me very little time to pull together similar pieces from my closet to emulate these iconic looks of Audrey’s. I know I’m not alone in that, having pieces in your wardrobe that Audrey Hepburn helped popularize and standardize as chic and classic.

Her style — from her hair to her jewelry to her clothing — remains inspirational, and most importantly, accessible. I don’t really look like Audrey Hepburn (except for superficial things like thicker eyebrows, a big smile, and pale skin — but my bone structure is very different), and my body shape is different (I’m taller and fuller). But the way she dressed, and even the simple pieces she chose, like striped tees and ankle pants, translate beyond body types and skin color. Even if we don’t look like Audrey, we can still see ourselves in her style and the way she carried herself. That’s part of why she is, and remains, an icon, in life and in style.

Closeups:

First up, some close-ups of my new pixie cut, which I have described as “Audrey Hepburn meets the ’80s.” 😀 I smoothed the sides down and curled the bangs down a bit as a modern take on Audrey’s short hairstyle in Sabrina. I also filled in my eyebrows more, as she also did during that time.

I wore the silver drop hoop earrings from the set that I recently received as an early birthday gift from my mom; these earrings are reproductions of the ones Audrey wore while filming Sabrina.

Inspiration photos (linked in paragraph below)

The photos in this post were inspired by a series Audrey Hepburn did in 1954 in Los Angeles, which I’ve pinned here and here.

Sam rigged up a white tarp in our backyard to serve as a similar backdrop for our photos.

How did I make this outfit my own?

Audrey is wearing a long-sleeved, ballet-neck black tee in the photos linked above, a tee with a deep V in the back. I do have a long-sleeved black tee, but it has a crew neckline, so I swapped that out for a elbow-sleeved tee with a V-neck in the front. And I just turned the tee around so the V-neck was in the back, which created a ballet neckline in the front. (It worked so well that I think I’ll wear it like that again!) 😀

For the next inspiration pose — again, the original seen here — I perched on top of my old piano stool.

And last but not least, a look at my outfit in full color — and my natural inclination to smile and laugh during our photo shoots!

Thanks, Brenda! I thought it would be a fun experiment to do b&w — at first, I was thinking of just doing 1 or 2 of the b&w, but then I loved the effect so much, I flipped my plans — I just did 1 photo in color and kept the rest b&w. 😀

OMG, I’ve seen lots of black and white pictures of Audrey Hepburn and you are the spitting image of her. You look fantastic. 🙂

This is not about your outfit, but I recognized your old piano stool I had forgotten that you had it! And it still looks good! Love, Mom

Thanks, Jess! It’s funny to be a taller lady going for a gamine look — for some reason, I always associate “gamine” with petite ladies, even though Audrey Hepburn herself was actually 5’7″! I really should adjust my perspective!

Awww, you are so sweet! You know, I don’t even think of the word “styling” in my mind when I am “putting together outfits” — so it always makes me pause — and smile! — when others compliment me on my styling skills. Thank you for the compliment, and for providing me a bit of a self-reflective moment 🙂
