Summer work casual | Mixing patterns + color

I’ve mentioned that I’ll be working in the library during the summer, which I’m very excited about, as I haven’t been able to do that in years. (My faculty contract is a standard 9-month one, so summer work is separate.) And… that means more work outfits for the blog over the summer!

This outfit is a good example of a “summer work casual” kind of look for me. It’s professional because of the ankle pants and wedges and cardigan, but it’s fun and colorful with the mix of prints and bright colors. A win-win in my book! ๐Ÿ™‚

Below is a closeup of mixing geometric prints. I felt a little wary at first about mixing these prints, as I tend to combine a larger-scale print with a smaller-scale print to balance things out visually — but these are two smaller-scale prints mixed together. But I think it works because navy is a unifying color between the two prints — and the navy cardigan helps “rest” the eye between the two prints. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it!

Plus, I got quite a few compliments on this outfit the first time I wore it, from students calling it “fun” and “cheerful.” I guess I’ve already worn down my colleagues with my pattern-mixing — they’re used to it by now! ๐Ÿ˜‰

And this kind of comfy work outfit lends itself perfectly to being comfy while chilling out after work. (Yes, we took these photos after work. And yes, that’s me, Jen, with a gin. Or to be more specific, a gin-and-soda infused with cucumber elixir. Perfect for a light summer drink!)

Cheers, y’all!

Jen with a gin, love it! The blue is so pretty with the cranberry color print pants (I see the blue in the pants, too), it’s a great combo.

Super cute! I am still in the beginnings of pattern mixing and usually only will pattern mix with an accessory like a scarf but you did wonderful with those pants and that shirt!

Oooh, it’s exciting to hear that you’re trying out pattern-mixing! Definitely, I agree with starting small, and it’s so easy to pattern-mix with scarves — and so many different ways to wear scarves! I think I should revisit my post I did years ago about pattern-mixing with scarves… I have added lots more examples over the last couple of years ๐Ÿ˜€
