5 fun facts + 5 outtakes to celebrate 5th blogiversary PLUS giveaway for 5 readers

Tomorrow is my fifth blog anniversary (!!!!!), and we are celebrating the occasion today with fun facts and outtakes and a reader giveaway, oh my! One fun fact and one outtake to celebrate each year of style blogging. 😀 You can also read the backstory of my style blog here in this post.

The giveaway is an Out of Print $25 e-gift card to FIVE lucky winners (!!!!!), and it’s an international giveaway that I am personally gifting (meaning, it’s not sponsored) to show my appreciation for all my readers! Scroll down to the bottom of this post for giveaway entry info. The giveaway opens TODAY and is open for entries through next Thursday, April 13th.

Fun fact #1

I taught myself to write backwards in cursive when I was young, at age 9. At that age, I was obsessed with handwriting and graphology (analysis of handwriting patterns and characteristics), and I thought it would be a fun trick to know how to write backward in cursive. It’s not a particularly useful trick, however. 😉

Fun fact #2

I taught myself how to type on a typewriter at age 10. When my paternal grandmother passed away when I was young, I also got her travel typewriter (in addition to a lot of her jewelry, as seen here and here). My older brother was learning how to type in junior high at the time, so I thought why not give it a go myself?

And thankfully, typing IS a useful trick. 🙂

Fun fact #3

In third grade, almost every piece of clothing in my closet was pink — a bright, eye-searing Pepto-Bismal kind of pink. And I looooooooooved it! I had gotten a multi-piece wardrobe set from the JCPenney or Sears catalog, and every single item was that shade of pink. I also had pink shoes! ♥♥♥

Fun fact #4

I am weirded out by photographs or ads that use photographs of animals whose limbs are human. So essentially superimposed animal heads on humans. It FREAKS me out, y’all. {Shiver}

Fun fact #5

I had verrrrrrrrrrrry long hair for most of my childhood, not intentionally cutting it until junior high. (I had to have my hair trimmed in 3rd grade, but that was because of a gum accident. Life happens, y’all.) My hair was so long, I could sit on it! I also remember how liberating it felt in junior high when I cut it all off! And I’ve obviously never looked back… 😉

Gift card giveaway

To celebrate my upcoming 5th blog anniversary, I am offering 5 lucky winners each a $25 e-gift card to one of my favorite online stores, Out of Print, which offers literary-themed t-shirts, tote bags, coffee mugs, and other items. This giveaway is NOT sponsored — these are gift cards I will purchase myself for the purpose of thanking y’all for your readership!

Out Of Print Gift Card

Out of Print has items with artwork from classic works, like Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice (I have the purple P&P tee, seen here), literary terms (my husband owns the “Plot” tee), as well as collections like the Library Collection (I have the library stamp tee, seen here; library card socks, seen here; and library card pouch from this collection, seen here) and the Banned Books Collection (I also have the banned books pouch, seen here, and socks, seen here).

I also didn’t know about this when I decided on this giveaway, but it just so happens that Out of Print is getting a jump start on celebrating National Library Week (April 9-15) by donating 10% of its Library Collection proceeds through April 9th to the Liberation Library in Chicago. You can read all about it here.

Note:  Out of Print is NOT sponsoring this giveaway or this site. I’m just a personal fan! The e-gift card giveaway prizes are coming out of my own pocket, as a personal thank you to readers.

  1. Isgolia

Fun fact: my eyelashes are blond on one eyelid and brown on the other. (I am not particularly good at applying mascara. I only use clear mascara so that I don’t mess up the mascara on my blond eyelashes).

  2. Isgolia

Also, I follow Librarian for Life & Style via the world wide web! No blog readers, social media sites, etc – – just good old clicking on the web link 🙂

  3. Salazar

Happy anniversary, Jen! I think it was my 5th (or 6th?) blog anniversary in March as well, but of course I forgot it – again.

Fun fact about me: I used to have a pixie cut when I was in first/second grade. My mom made me get it because she was tired of brushing my hair, LOL. I hated it and have never worn my hair short ever since (so I guess I’m opposite to you!)

  4. robjodiefilogomo

What a great way to celebrate, Jen!!
Fun fact about me since you discussed hair. I used to have those curly pigtails (like Buffy in Family Affair) when I was young. Then when I got glasses in 4th grade, we cut them off and mom has them hanging in her hallway in a shadow box (creepy, huh?)

  5. robjodiefilogomo

As for what I’d get if I won, lord knows I need another t-shirt, but maybe I’d get one for my mom that says Charlotte’s Web, since her name is Charlotte?

  6. Erin @ Loop Looks

I have to know: what came first? Did you find photos and then come up with fun facts or did you think of your fun facts and then find the photos to go with them in your stash? Because they work together perfectly!

As for my fun fact, I have a birthmark on my knee that looks like a paw print. It’s faded as I’ve gotten older but it’s still kind of there!

    1. Jen @ Librarian for Life and Style Post author

First of all, I love the fact that you were born a dog lover with that paw print birthmark. That is awesome! To answer your question, I wrote up a list of possible fun facts separate from a list of possible outtakes. I narrowed down each list separately but put in the outtakes first when drafting the post. When I started putting in the facts, that’s when I realized that some of the fun facts kinda fit the outtakes! So it was unintentionally perfect! 😁

  7. Lori Wedig

Fun Fact- I worked at Barnes and Noble in the Children’s section right after college, and played dress up in many of Mercer Mayer’s characters, the mouse from “if you give a Mouse a Cookie,” and some of the bears from Berenstain Bears.

  8. Mireille

Fun fact: growing up i wore a lot of thrifted clothes and outfits my I’m made which were not typically in style. So nowadays I follow different fashion blogs to get ideas but am still thrifty so I do still go to thrift stores but not exclusively!

  9. Mireille

I follow your blog by clicking on your link that’s have bookmarked with other blogs. I check it daily.

  10. Mireille

I probably would buy one of my boys the don’t let the pigeon drive the bus tee. The pigeon books are his favorite and he is learning how to read in kindergarten.

  11. Beth M.

5 years! Time flies, doesn’t it? I follow your blog online; just remember to visit regularly. A fun fact about me: I’ve raised several squirrels from birth in my back yard. Most of them still live there!

  12. Brenda N

Hi Jen, this was a fun post and a great giveaway! Love that you learned to write cursive backwards, that’s really amazing. Pretty funny about the animal- people combos, too. Congratulatons on your 5 year blog-iversary.😊

  13. Apryl Brodersen

Happy Anniversary! I love your blog.

Fun fact about me…hmmm. Building off your fact about being able to write backwards in cursive, I taught myself to play Bach’s Minuet in G while upside down. I got the idea from the movie Amadeus. It’s the only song I can do (well, the only song I tried to teach myself at least). Sadly, I no longer have access to a piano so I’m not sure if I can still play it.

  14. Brenda N

Jen, I enjoy following your blog online on all my various devices. I also enjoy your instagram pics, its especially fun to see what the kitties are up to. ☺

  15. Brenda N

Out of Print has some great totes, I want at least two or three! Especially like the Make Way for Ducklings and Nancy Drew totes.

  16. rabbitstylenews

Fun fact about me: I’m typing this on my iPhone on Easter Island! Some dreams do come true! I have a list of islands I want to visit, and a goal is to include a race event during the trip when possible. This was the first with a half marathon in Santiago last weekend. Next up might be a half marathon on the Faroe Islands summer 2018. (PS My wifi keeps cutting out and I can’t tell if it posted or not, so please delete any duplicate comments that might appear.)

  17. Brenda N

Hi Jen, I was so excited by your fun facts, I forgot to leave one of my own. Hope you’ll excuse this additional comment 😀.
My fun fact is that I’m the lizard wrangler in our house. I have no fear of reptiles or bugs and am happy to safely relocate any lizards that enter the house back outside, by hand. My lizard phobic husband keeps his distance while I handle the wildlife!

    1. Jen @ Librarian for Life and Style Post author

Cool! Sam and I thought about getting a lizard once for a pet. I quite like them, and lizard are great pets for people with allergies. But when we found out we would have to feed them live bugs and stuff, that was a deal-breaker (since my husband is a vegetarian and a Buddhist).

  18. Elena DeLoof

Oh, wow! This is the first time I’ve visited the Out of Print website and suddenly I see a summer wardrobe of tees! Love the Beowulf, the This is How We Roll, the When in Doubt, the ……..etc.

  19. karenstrand

Happy Blogiversary! I do love your blog and am so glad that you are still going strong! Fun Fact: Growing up, I always wanted to be a flight attendant and even was called back and sent to Denver for interviews! #didntgetpicked

  20. karenstrand

Just checked out “Out of Print”. What fun?! I would get the “A Tree Grows on Brooklyn” shirt for my daughter – her favorite book. And for myself? I’d get the “Library Stamp” in navy.

  21. Janette Hansen

Hey stranger! 🙂 Well done with 5 yrs! 🙂 That is awesome!! So. Fun fact about me..I am a pilot. I love the sky!! I usually see your post through fb but read more under the blog. I would buy a few of them cool shirts if I won. Thanks again! Catch ya later my friend!

  22. Sally

Fun (fashion) fact: When I was in about 3rd grade, I was obsessed with a lavender jacket + knickers set that I wanted to wear all the time.

  23. Sally

I already have the regular Alice in Wonderland t-shirt, so clearly I’d have to get the German one (which is fun because my dad is a fluent German speaker).

  24. momofdox

Happy 5th Blog Anniversary, Jen! 🙂 Fun fact about me: When I met my husband for the first time, I did not know that he was a twin. I’d met his brother months before, when a friend introduced us. I knew that his brother worked at the restaraunt where I’d gotten a new job. It really surprised me when both of them came around the corner carrying loads of clean dishes! After work that night, we ended up talking in the parking lot for hours, which meant I broke my curfew with my parents and got grounded.

  25. Lilm211

Your fun facts and all the facts in the comments are great! Going along with your backwards writing- I memorized the alphabet backwards right after I learned it forwards because I thought that was somehow exceptionally cool, lol.

  26. Mike

Not sure if I qualify for the giveaway, but I wanted to say congratulations on your blog’s 5 year anniversary, Jen! That’s quite an accomplishment I think. I hope to make it that far with mine.

Fun Fact About Me: I always carry a small notebook around with me to use as my numbers journal. I never go anywhere without it!

      1. Mike

Thanks, Jen! I always appreciate your kindness and openness to me being a part of your blog community. By nature, I am very shy (remember my first SIA challenge?). But thanks to you and the others, I have opened up so much and I always look forward to the new challenges and blog posts! 🙂

  27. Elena DeLoof

Hmmm, fun fact about me: Since childhood, I’ve loved reading dictionaries for fun. One of the things that attracted me to my husband was learning that he also loved his dictionary and that he also kept one by the side of his bed. We now have them upstairs, downstairs, on our PCs, our tablets, and phones.

      1. Stephanie D.

Ummm, probably not. It’s called “The Runaway Snowman.” I actually auditioned for the villain, Freddy Fasttalk, but instead was Robin. I might have pictures. 😉

  28. Kezzie

What a generous giveaway Jen and many congratulations on your Blogiversary! I LOVE the fact you taught yourself cursive writing backwards (is that joined up handwriting?) . I am the same about animals and humans being mixed. I HATE the snapchat feature where people give themselves animal faces!
One interesting fact about me??? Hmmm.. I had a piece of music published when I was 13 and I discovered only today that I am related to the family who founded The Salvation Army!

    1. Jen @ Librarian for Life and Style Post author

Yes, cursive handwriting is the same as joined-up handwriting, or looped writing. Fun fact: I just learned that “cursive” comes from the Medieval Latin word cursivus, which literally means running. And thanks for sharing two fun facts about yourself! 😀

  29. Maria Atilano

Fun Fact: I have an obsession with bears, and usually have at least one bear-related thing near me or on my person – my cell phone case has bears, I have bears in my office and on my computer desktop, I have bear earrings and necklaces, shirts, scarves, leggings… it’s kind of ridiculous.

  30. amberiam

Talking babies freak me out! I don’t like the animal head/human limb combo either, but talking babies make me shriek in horror! That new movie Boss Baby looks like an absolute nightmare to me!!!

  31. amberiam

I follow you on Facebook and Instagram (I recently left a comment about the Starbucks in Seattle being “the mothership,” and I was so excited when you responded…it’s the little things!)

  32. amberiam

I would love to get the “This is how I roll” scoop neck t-shirt! A student at my library gave me the pouch as a pick-me-up gift one day, so I could wear the shirt and carry the pouch. Thanks for the opportunity to win, and congratulations on blogging for five years!

  33. Anne M Bray

Fun Fact: In Junior year of high school, I did an off-campus internship at Knoedler Gallery in NYC. (WAY off-campus. I lived with a family in NJ and commuted into the city by bus. My school was 150 miles upriver in Troy, NY). The best part? I helped the gallery librarian sort and alphabetize all the artist catalogues. LOVED doing that!

  34. rinthewanderer

Fun fact: I was determined in fourth grade to wear a dress everyday. I had a lot of dresses at that time (most made by my great-grandmother) and I was able to wear a dress everyday for about a month.

  35. Amber

YAyers, I love fun-fact posts! Let’s see….I can type over 120 words per minute. I have never had hair longer than my collarbones. When I rose the bus in elementary school, I spent the entire hour to and from school reading – I couldn’t read in a moving vehicle now if my life depended on it!

  36. Mica

Congrats on your 5 year blogaversary! It’s a fun milestone to reach! 🙂 You already know I had my 5 year blogaversary earlier this year, but the fun fact is that it’s not my first blog! I’ve had a few blogs before this one.

Hope you are having a lovely week, and thanks for the giveaway!

    Away From The Blue Blog

  37. Just Right Joy

Fun fact: I have a weird affinity for dinosaurs, and I would love to go to jurassic park, escaped critters or not. I also seem to have passed this on to my 15month old daughter, who seems to think she is a dinosaur.

    1. Just Right Joy

Happy blogiversary! I discovered you through Instagram and searching #librarian. (I was a librarian before kiddo came along.) although I just discovered that I’m not actually following you with my blog, even though I thought I was. 🙄

  38. Nancy Loring

I like to pan for gold where I live in northern New Hampshire. It is a new hobby and I have not panned a lot but I do have a fair amount of flakes and someday you never know.
