Going casual with a statement overcoat

Here’s a casual outfit I wore to run errands over the break, when I was off work. This is a great example of dressing down a statement piece like this houndstooth overcoat with its own faux fur collar.  Or, if you prefer to think about it the opposite way, it’s an example of dressing up a casual outfit with a statement overcoat. Either way, it works. 😉

I thrifted this AWESOME coat last winter, and it is such an eye-catching piece.

If you mentally remove the coat, what I’m wearing is literally just a tee and jeans and boots. That’s it. Super simple. The coat is doing so much work on its own and instantly jazzes up the outfit. But my cognac flat boots and fun felt beanie still keep the overall look casual.

The backdrop is a mural entitled “Youth For Christ Mural” by Covenant High School in the “New Tacoma” neighborhood. I spotted the mural on a side street as we were running errands, and I thought it would be a fun backdrop for pics. I don’t match the colors of the mural, but I certainly go.

And it totally looks like the two hands in the mural are tapping me on the shoulder… once you see it, you can’t unsee it, right?! 😀

I think you match exactly (maybe it’s just how the colors look on my monitor?) and the square designs on the hands also match the pattern on your coat too. Fabulous look either way. I’m a big fan of statement coats, they make getting dressed so much easier.

What a fun coat! You look wonderful, Jen! And this mural is PERFECT as a background for you. I think I’ve seen it before! I don’t know Tacoma very well, though I love it. 🙂
