The smile behind my smile | Review of Smile Brilliant whitening kit + GIVEAWAY

A couple of months ago, I was contacted by Smile Brilliant, a company that provides custom fitted teeth whitening trays and teeth whitening gels. Because of my in-depth reviews about my Invisalign clear braces last year, as detailed here and here, it totally made sense to try out Smile Brilliant’s teeth whitening kit.

And just in time for the holidays, you can enter to win your OWN teeth whitening kit from Smile Brilliant in a special GIVEAWAY! Scroll down to the end or click here for details on how to enter.

I was also eager to brighten my smile, as I love ALL THE THINGS that naturally dull teeth, including coffee, tea, and wine. I have used other teeth whitening systems in the past, like whitestrips, etc., and haven’t been all that pleased with the results.

Librarian for Life + Style | Reviewing the Smile Brilliant whitening kit

Full disclosure:  This is a post done in collaboration with Smile Brilliant, and I received a complimentary teeth whitening kit in exchange for an honest review. As always, I am 100% honest about sharing my personal experiences with you.

I know your first question is most likely, “Does it even work?” So I wanted to get straight to a sneak peek of my results using the whitening kits. In the pic below, you can see how my teeth looked before I started, on the left, and after I finished, on the right. I took photos at the same time of day (in the morning, before my morning coffee), and in the same location (in front of an open window in our main bathroom), to replicate similar lighting for a before-and-after comparison. So, yes, as you can see below, I am pleased to say the whitening kits do work! 😀

Step 1:  Making the molds for custom-fitted trays

The complete experience with the Smile Brilliant whitening kits comes in three parts. After receiving your kit, the first step is to make your dental impressions. This includes a few steps, including mixing together two pastes, a base paste and a catalyst paste, then folding the mixture — which looks and feels like silly putty — into the dental trays provided.

You then insert those trays into your mouth, finalizing your dental impressions, one for upper teeth and one for lower teeth. Each step has precise timings, so I really appreciated the very clear and illustrated instructions provided in the kit. They also include an extra set of base and catalyst pastes, but I didn’t need to use the extra set.

I highly recommend that if at all possible, you do this with another person who can time each step for you. (Your fingers get messy after mixing the paste together.) My husband was able to time me — and take pics of me during the process!

Ahhhh, the glamorous life of a style blogger! 😉

Step 2:  Getting your custom-fitted trays

The kit also includes a mailing envelope for you to send back the trays. The Smile Brilliant lab technicians then use the molds to create custom-fitted dental trays and send those back to you within 5-10 business days. (It took 10 full business days, from me dropping off my trays in the mail for me to receiving my custom-fitted dental trays in my mailbox.)

By the way, their website has an extensive Help section, including a Frequently Asked Questions page.

I have a set of clear plastic retainer trays from Invisalign, so I was expecting the Smile Brilliant trays to also be hard plastic like my Invisalign trays. But the Smile Brilliant trays are actually soft plastic — and very comfortable to wear. I was very pleased that they fit just right!

Step 3:  Using the teeth whitening and desensitizing gels

After receiving your trays, the third and final step is to use the teeth whitening and desensitizing gels with the custom-fitted dental impression trays to whiten your teeth. Again, there are very clear and illustrated instructions for how to do this, as seen below, plus extra tips for sensitive teeth on the Smile Brilliant website.

The whitening gel came in a green syringe, and the desensitizing gel came in a purple syringe.

I have extremely sensitive teeth, so I appreciated the desensitizing gel and extra tips for sensitive teeth. I also received extra tips from my Smile Brilliant contact, such as mixing together the whitening and desensitizing gels in the trays. (Also, when you visit their website, they always have a contact on chat, ready to help with any questions. Excellent customer service!)

Due to my teeth’s extra sensitivity, I started out using the gel for 30 minutes and was only able to build up to an hour and a half (the instructions say you can go up to 3 hours max); I also had to do the teeth whitening process every other day. I used the whitening gel for 10 sessions over a span of 2 weeks. I suspect that others who have teeth that aren’t quite as sensitive as mine would be able to use the gel longer and get even more striking results.

But I am pleased with my own results, and that’s the point, right? To feel more comfortable in your own skin — and teeth! 🙂 You then can use the Smile Brilliant whitening and desensitizing gels every few months for touch-ups, to get the most out of your teeth whitening kit. Here again, is a collage of my teeth, before and after using the Smile Brilliant teeth whitening kits:

And below is a full shot of my teeth after using the whitening trays. In the pic below, I’m wearing red lipstick with blue undertones (which also tends to visually brighten teeth).

You can read here about more personal experiences and testimonials from others who have used the Smile Brilliant teeth whitening kits.

For another personal testimony — and to see the process in action! — I also appreciated how style and beauty blogger Kelli Williams talked about her personal tooth sensitivity issues and experiences with the Smile Brilliant whitening kits in this video below.
