Retro flair | Swingy dress + knotted button-down shirt

First of all, let’s discuss how many similar terms there are for “button-down shirt”… I also refer to it as a “button-up” or “button front” shirt and also as an “Oxford shirt.” What do you call it? Is there an “official” term? Whatever the case, I often knot my button-downs over dresses, as there’s a sleeker line around the midsection — and it’s such an easy way to change the look of a dress.

On this day, I woke up and said out loud “I want to feel pretty!” Sometimes, my wardrobe decisions start out with that simple of an inspiration. I had a more low-key day, heading out to an off-campus meeting, so I could have a little more fun with what I was wearing.

When I put it all together, I also felt this outfit had a bit of retro ’50s flair to it. I think it’s the silhouette of the flared, swingy skirt of the dress paired with the knotted shirt. The last time I wore this dress, I was all gussied up for my birthday, as seen here, so I wanted to show a more casual variation this time when remixing this dress.

I also was pleased to receive a few compliments on my outfit on this day — and on my lipstick! By the way, I once again layered two lip stains together to get this shade, layering a bright pink lip stain — “Lovesick” from the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable balm stain — over a dark purple lip stain — “Shameless” from the Revlon ColorBurst Matte Balm collection.

I remember reading once that a “button down” was a shirt where the collar points button to the shirt and a “button up” is a shirt where they don’t.

Whatever you call it, though, I really like the black top buttoned over the dress here. Your hair also looks great pulled back from your face like that!
