For this week’s Style Imitating Art (SIA) challenge, Salazar @ 14 Shades of Grey chose a gorgeous art nouveau brooch by French artist René Lalique. This “Dragonfly Lady” brooch, ca. 1897-98, was presented at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition in 1900, as part of Lalique’s art nouveau jewelry collection.
And there’s still time to participate in the SIA challenge! You don’t have to be a blogger, and you can also take flay lays of outfits or selfies. Just send a photo of your inspired outfit to Salazar at 14shadesofgreyblog@gmail.com by tonight. Salazar will have the inspiration round-up on her blog, 14 Shades of Grey, tomorrow.
Here’s my SIA interpretation:
I wanted to mix gold, mint, and black and an interesting piece of jewelry. My first thought was my mint statement earrings, so checkmark for the jewelry and mint. Then came my graphic print blouse, which has a pattern that echoed the color scheme and art nouveau feel. I finished the outfit off with my teal green cardigan — and yes, I did wear this outfit on St. Patrick’s Day!
Details:
- Teal green cardigan, August Silk, old {exact style in different colors}
- Graphic-print blouse, Banana Republic, thrifted {similar} {very similar style top in different patterns}
- Black ankle pants, Banana Republic, thrifted {almost exact style from same brand}
- Flats, Payless {similar style in champagne color}
- Mint statement earrings, Old Navy, old {very similar double-drop earrings} {very similar earrings in teardrop shape}
- Braided metallic headband, Lulu’s c/o giveaway {very similar}
We were planning on taking photos in a different location in the neighborhood, and then I spied this tree. And then I realized that the shape of the tree echoed the shape of the dragonfly brooch — happy accident!

Thanks, Patti! Art nouveau jewelry is so lovely 🙂
Great interpretation Jen! I especially love the pattern on your shirt, which mimics the pattern on the dragon lady’s wings quite well.
Thanks, I first thought of the blouse because of the color scheme, but then I thought the pattern looked vaguely art nouveau/deco-ish 🙂
I agree. Very much art deco. 🙂
what a pretty brooch to imitate, and I love your interpretation of it–the colors work really well together!
Thanks so much, Shea 😀
That top and your headband are too perfect! And I love the tree.
Thanks! The tree was a total accident — but a fortunate one! 😀
The graphic design of your shirt and the vibrant turquoise really capture the essence of that brooch!
