’80s Soviet chic

Today’s title comes again from my husband, Sam. He dubbed this outfit as “sorta ’80s Soviet chic,” because of the grey-and-black color palette and stripes combined with my banged bob hairstyle. I will take it!

I wore this outfit for an all-day series of meeting off-campus. A blazer and skinny jeans are a never-fail combo for me when I want to look professional but still not be “dressy.”

And of course, the star of this outfit are my new grey suede booties! I rolled up my skinny jeans, the ones with a black stripe down the sides, so that you could see the booties.

I also wore this outfit after I got home, to go see The Martian on a date night with my husband. (The movie is REALLY good — highly recommended!) So yay, these new ankle booties are comfortable enough to wear all day! 😀

I don’t think it looks very Soviet (and trust me, growing up in Vietnam in the late 80’s, I know what “80’s Soviet” looks like) but it is chic indeed!

I get that! I just thought it was funny that was Sam’s reaction to my outfit — which he now tells me was “’80s / Soviet chic,” (the “slash” being an important distinction that I totally missed when he said it out loud) — and that my outfit reminded him of Cate Blanchett playing a Russian intelligence officer in the “Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull” movie. I think that’s mostly because of the hairstyle and color palette, and it is a more severe/streamlined look than I usually wear.
