What I wore to go shopping | Black shirtdress + cognac accessories

If you’re a regular reader (thank you!), then you know I prefer to plan ahead and be organized. I am a librarian, after all! 😉 Sometimes, I go shopping on the spur-of-the-moment, but when I am planning on clothes-shopping, I also plan out what I’m going to wear, in order to maximize efficiency when trying on clothes. And yes, I try on EVERYTHING; that’s my #1 personal rule when going shopping.

So here’s a typical outfit I wear when going clothes-shopping. I prefer to start with something buttoned, so it’s easier to take on and off. This light cotton shirtdress is perfect for that! (I haaaaate the static electricity your hair gets when you have to keep changing out a top or dress in the dressing room. I’m not the only one this happens to, right??) This dress also has deep pockets, perfect for storing things like a shopping list, coupons, chapstick, and my phone.

I also wore my comfortable cognac wedges to give me a little height, for two reasons:  (1) I’m taller, so I like to be able to scan the racks in a store first, if possible, to get a sense of how things are organized in the store, and (2) I can see how longer pants and jeans look with heels, if needed.

And here are some better outfit photos we took in a leafy area outside the store:

If I’m thrifting, I like to wear something like just jeggings and a tank so that I can slip clothes on over my outfit. There aren’t always changing rooms at the good thrift shops.

You’re so right, thrifting has its own challenges! That’s a good tip, to wear leggings. A little over a year ago, I went to the “biggest clothing swap in the PNW” and I wore leggings and a thin elastic-waisted tunic for that very reason, so I could slip things on and off easily without a changing room.

The straw bag is TOO cute with the cognac and the black. Really brings it into the summer. I have read from several stylists that you should wear a dress and heels when you shop. I don’t wear heels much anymore so I don’t even pack a pair when I go shopping anymore where as I used to. I also wear a black dress, usually it’s jersey knit though. I’m kinda particular about getting uncomfortable when I’m doing a lot of shopping. I also take my biggest purse because I’m usually taking online order returns to town since it’s a good 60+ miles to my kind of shopping.

Totally makes sense to wear flats while shopping if that’s what you usually wear. (Oooh, and I never thought about packing a pair of heels — good tip!) My cork wedges feel like a good compromise, since they’re so comfortable — and with the platform, there really isn’t much “heel,” so to speak. 🙂

You look awesome as usual and I love the tips, like bringing another pair of shoes in your bag! Why didn’t I think of that!

Black and cognac is a classic pairing! I usually like to wear a camisole or cami-style bra when I go shopping … most tops have armholes and necklines that are too big, and wearing a cami helps me visualize what an item would look like styled for work.

I know you won’t be able to participate, but switch out the cognac accessories for red and you’ll have the perfect outfit for this week’s SIA!

I love black and cognac together!! I recently styled this color combo too! So chic and easy! And I love how you styled your hair – bangs to the side – so cute! Susan

I Love black and cognac together! I do plan for comfortable and easy to remove clothing when I know I am going shopping. Oddly enough, button up dresses never entered my mind. Thanks for the tip!
