What I wore for Independence Day | An American born in the UAE

If you’re a longtime reader, then you’ll probably know that I’m an American born abroad. If you didn’t already know, here’s some quick background:  My parents were living and working as teachers in Dubai when I came along, and returned home to the U.S. when I was a baby. I then grew up in northeast Texas. I went back to the UAE as an adult, to live and work in the capital city of Abu Dhabi, until I relocated to Portland, Oregon.

I chose this outfit for the 4th of July because it felt like the perfect blend of my American roots and my Emirati birthplace. It still has that patriotic color scheme of red, white, and blue for the USA combined with the fun camel detail for the UAE.

This 4th of July holiday was an unusually social one for us, with two engagements with friends — one an afternoon soiree with friends who have recently relocated to Portland, and then a nighttime get-together with friends who recently got engaged. Both events were definitely casual, and of course, I wanted to feel comfortable — especially in this heat! Ankle pants + a t-shirt worked for me on both counts! 🙂

The finishing touch? Another one of my husband’s fedoras! This navy straw fedora played off the patriotic color scheme, and brought in more stripes to the outfit! 😉

Jennifer, you did notice on the other camel t-shirt that it is a Bactrian camel with TWO humps and lives in Asia. The dromedary has only one hump. Love, Mom

That’s a lovely way to describe it, “the joining of the two lands.” 🙂 And it’s the first camel I’ve ever seen on a tee — I think my mom found it when we were clothes-shopping for my birthday (my mom’s gift to me last year). So it’s also a way to celebrate my mom for finding the camel tee! ❤
