Laura Petrie style inspiration for casual work wear

I’ve mentioned my love of Laura Petrie-inspired style before (see here), and it’s evident again with today’s outfit. One of Mary Tyler Moore’s iconic roles was as Laura Petrie on The Dick Van Dyke show (1961-1966), and her style was always classy, chic, and sporty.

Ever since I opened my heart to ankle pants (three years ago I had NO ankle pants in my closet. Now I have at least 7 pairs, and I cannot imagine my wardrobe without them), I have thought about Laura Petrie’s casual style time and again. Her basic formula for casual wear was a pair of ankle pants, flats, and a cute top. And it’s become my no-fail formula for casual work wear, as well — especially on heavy teaching days like I’ve had the past couple of weeks at the library.

Seriously, this outfit hits all my checkboxes for comfort AND work appropriateness. You can never go wrong with a cardigan, and ankle pants are just as comfortable as jeans or khakis but look just a little more sophisticated. Add a fun print top — this curved-hem t-shirt has a print of eyeglasses!!! — and you’re ready to work!

I also had fun wearing this headband again. You may or may not remember it, but I DIY-ed this headband a couple of years ago. I had added a little “J” charm and bow to the headband, and you can see lots more details here in this “DIY Safety pin headband” tutorial post.

You might also notice I’m sporting new earrings. They’re the same shape — and the same brand — as my topaz drop earrings, as seen here, and I couldn’t resist picking up this pair in clear crystal. They’re so light that I can hardly feel them, but I like how much sparkle the larger stones give. Here’s a closeup of these new earrings:

I also love this berry + navy color combination. I think this cardigan paired with navy makes the berry color look even darker and more purple-y. I will definitely be wearing this outfit again! And thanks goes again to my friend and fellow librarian Stephanie for taking these photos for me today. 🙂
